View Full Version : Kidneythieves?

They have a "new" album out, which is actually a re-release of "Trickster", their first album. They rock so much, Free's voice is absolutely beautiful (when she wants it to be), and dynamic enough that it can be ugly for some of Bruce's heavier stuff. If you're into industrial rock-type stuff, a la Ev but darker and heavier, check them out.

Oh yes! I agree. I loves how she sings all pretty and then ugly and angry. She pulls it off so very well. :)

Their first album Trickster has a greater variety of stuff, starting out with some pretty hard tracks like Taxicab Messiah, and my favorite, S&M (A Love Song). Then a lot of softer stuff where she spends more time singing, but every once in awhile they kick in with a hard industrial riff in the middle of an otherwise slow song, it's great.

Zerospace sticks more with the industrial element of the music and it works really well, I think. Free's vocals over the riffs are phenomenal, she sounds tough and sexy at the same time. It seems like they really found the sound they wanted when they made this album and tweaked it until it was just about perfect.

If I had to pick my favorite songs they'd be...
from Trickster:
Taxicab Messiah
S&M (A Love Song)
Feathers
Pretty

from Zerospace:
Black Bullet
Dyskrasia
Spank
Glitter Girl

But GO BUY ZEROSPACE if you like it, don't be a punk and listen to them for free. If they are gonna make it they need to prove that they can sell! Also Trickster is being re-released with a bunch of special features and 5 new songs, so look for that too!

I had to go to Chicago to fine their Zer0space album. The Kidney Thieves rock. I love that album.

Black Bullet
Dyskrasia
Spank

Awesome songs... But I hope I'll be able to get their new CD here in St. Louis somewhere. Otherwise I'll have to wait for another trip to Chicago.

Here (http://www.kidneythieves.com/store.html) is the link to the online store on the official site where you can buy the new trickstereprocess disc, which is their first album Trickster remastered with 5 new songs and a bunch of bonus features, like I mentioned before.

It's shipping September 3rd and you can only buy it off the website.

They need this money to tour so if you like them and want to see them live, plunk down the 14 bucks! It'll totally be worth it!

Just got my copy of trickstereprocess over the weekend and it is AMAZING! The old songs from Trickster sound so much better on full CD quality sound instead of the mp3s most people have. The new songs kick ass (especially "Veteran" which I am REALLY grooving on). And there are live versions of three songs which are also really entertaining.

BUT THE DVD... OMG!

Can we say rehearsal footage? Can we say two music videos? Can we say SIX SONGS worth of live concert footage? I haven't actually watched it yet cause I promised Kate we'd de-virginize it together, but I nearly orgasmed when I read what all was on it.

I'm a kidneythieves whore. I heard of them waaay back when trickster first came out. Hell, try and get an original copy now. Not quite as hard as getting Origin, but still. Then I have two copies of Zero Space(thought I lost one so went out and bought another, then found the original). I am so gonna get any cd that they ever put out, and if I ever get a chance to see them live...wow! I will be willing to travel a good bit to see them, seeing how I never have before.

My fav song of all time has to be the first track(taxicab messiah I think) off Trickster. I also love track 10(forgetting the names off hand).

and yes, the lack of boobage was sadening.

Has anyone ever seen their older video to their single off trickster? The only version of it I have seen so far is very grainy and poor quality.

Well, there's been rumors that KT is going on without Free, HOWEVER I happen to know for a fact that Free and Bruce are discussing a new tour, so I wouldn't worry too much about the end of KT. I think Free just wanted a new way to express herself without being limited by the expectations that come with KT.

Taken from the KT Mailing List thingy:

Update:

I wanted to give everyone a quick update on the band and what's been happening with Kidneythieves. After our nationwide tour with KMFDM and Tommy Lee during the summer of 2002, we returned home to Los Angeles to find out that our label, Extasy Records, had fired the entire staff of 40 employees and basically closed shop. They put us out for one more gig in Jacksonville Florida (which totally kicked ass!) but that was it. They had spent all of their money on another band on the label and basically left us high and dry. The irony was that Zerospace was still selling 400-500 units/week consistently. Oh well, that's the record business.

It took us about 3 more months to get out of our recording contract with the label. The first thing we did after that was record the new material for our next CD/DVD, Trickster Reprocess, which many of you purchased (thank you very much!). We also shot the video for "Red & Violet" featured on the CD and I edited the video footage and assembled the CD and DVD. This was our first independent release and, with the help of the video game Deus Ex Invisible War (which features 5 tracks), has sold pretty well. We played a few more shows after leaving the label but, unfortunately, we could not afford to set out on a major tour.

Where we are now:

At that point, Free decided to take some time off from the band to pursue her solo project. She needed to get away from Kidneythieves after pretty much working non stop on the band for 7 years. She has been playing a lot in LA with a new band and a new sound. You can check out her new CD and web site at www.freedominguez.com

The rest of the band, Fijt, Sean, Chris and Myself, decided to hit the studio to work on our next CD. We have been in the studio for just about a year working on material for our new project which we will announced TO THE WORLD next month. We are in negotiations with 3 labels and are about 70% complete on the CD. Sorry to keep you in suspense but I promise the wait will be worth it. Definitely a KT sound to the next level. We plan on touring with the new group ASAP and can't wait to see everyone again.

I checked out the samples on her site....liked what I heard.

I was gonna order the CD, but had to leave and thought I'd cancelled it....apparently not because it came in the mail yesterday. Gonna have to wait till the weekend when I get home to listen to it.

I love kidneythieves.

I've seen them live a few times. I'm convinced that the chick in that band is either way into yoga or used to be a stripper....or both. The way she moves on stage is way different from most vocalists.

I still haven't bought the trickster re-release. But I should because I bought trickster from them at a show and it didn't come with artwork.

A stripper? Hahahahaha!! That's the awesomest thing I have heard all day. I think she's more of a yoga chick. ;) Pre-Kidneythieves Free D was a psychology student at Houston University. So, my guess is its the yoga and the fact that she's massively confident.

Anyways, I envy you seeing them live. I live in VA and I doubt highly they'll ever make their way over here unless they get a decent record label. :(

EDIT:

I still haven't bought the trickster re-release. But I should because I bought trickster from them at a show and it didn't come with artwork.

Trickstereprocess doesn't have the same artwork as Trickster. But I still recommend getting it. It comes with a kickass dvd, 2 new tracks, and several live songs.

I doubt she'll paint herself into a corner and say anything definitively one way or the other, forever and ever, BUT...

Rag Magazine

story: Juliett Rowe

This is one of those interviews that reaffirms why I do this. This is one of those times where I get a high from a great conversation. This is one of those times that keeps things in perspective–that it really is the music that matters, and it’s the soul of an artist that comes through and touches you. The art is real.

You may know the name Free Dominguez. I discovered it about two years ago when her band Kidneythieves (consisting of Free and musical partner Bruce Somers) made the cover of Outburn Magazine. I became a huge fan of Kidneythieves–their industrial driven music wrapped around Free’s voice and intelligent lyrics, was one of my best musical discoveries. So here I am two years later rambling on to Free in an email about God knows what at two o’clock in the morning, and her taking me seriously and actually replying, that I get the chance to interview her. After playing a fierce game of schedule tag, a three hour time difference, and the Friends finale, we finally manage to nail down a time for an interview. Free is fighting rush hour traffic in L.A. as she is talking to me, and it almost seems the perfect metaphor. Amidst all the chaos and uncertainty, sometimes you just have to forge your own path. Her new solo album Freedoming is out now (you can get it off her website), and it’s a stark departure from Kidneythieves. The album is warm, and lush with it’s bare arrangements and instrumentation. Free’s voice takes center stage on the album and shines thoroughly– nothing is cluttered down by samples and drum machines.

KT could be considered a casualty of the black hole known as the music industry, where consolidation, and unrealistic profit expectations are setting the stage for implosion. After their label Extasy Records folded, (the group had two full length releases, their debut Trickster in 1998, and Zerospace in 2002), the realities of the profit driven music industry seemed just about to take it’s toll on the band and it’s music. “We’ve been doing it for a while, and we’ve had some really great things happen. I’m very thankful,” Free says. “It wasn’t until after that I realized how many people were into it. We weren’t a multi-platinum selling band, and we kind of were in this shell of going through what the record company wanted us to do motion. We were really close to having a lot of better things happen for us when we got off the Tommy Lee tour. All these great things we were going to do, and release another single, and the label just cut everything off, and they pretty much basically closed down. We really needed that last extra push to take it over the edge.”

“It was one of those things,” she says, about the turmoil of having your livelihood swept out from underneath your feet. “A lot of things happened in my life right after that. It was like dealing with death, and heartbreak–all the stuff that songs are made of. It was a really intense period, and I just needed to understand, so in my process, I used my creative outlet to go with what ever transformation I was going through. So I just started writing, and I realized that this was something completely different that I really hadn’t touched upon. It’s cathartic, it’s healing, and I’m also learning to be a better songwriter. So I just kind of went with it, and it turned into people just saying that I should release it. I don’t really have the big studio, or a lot of money–it’s not like people were beating down my door to help me,” Free says laughing. “I just kind of took it upon myself and it was an amazing learning experience, it’s broadened my knowledge and my ability to write songs better and to play music better. As far as Kidneythieves go, that’s an expensive project. It takes a lot of money to tour–and when there’s no tour support from a label–it’s just really expensive. I’m really over being involved with a label. I get it. [laughs] Bruce and I have been writing, and we’re just going to put some stuff together. I don’t know what it’s going to be called. I don’t know if it’s going to be Kidneythieves or what. We’re just taking it as it comes.”

“I knew that there was this whole other creative part of me–you know the songs that like my mom listened to, or the songs that I grew up listening to, like Heart, or Stevie Nicks, who is my hero. And even current artists like PJ Harvey and Damien Rice–it’s a challenge to be able to write a great song that’s not overproduced. It is what it is, and the full of it really comes through. The sound of Kidneythieves and all that, that’s not what it’s really about. Don’t get me wrong, my heart and soul is in that, but it’s just a different sonic experience. Being as how I was kind of going through all this mental shit, and I put this little studio in my bedroom, it just kind of turned out that way.”

Freedoming was recorded in an eight foot section of her bedroom over the course of 2003. She had a friend over working on her computer, picked up the guitar and next thing you know they had half a song written already. Free was surprised at how easily things flowed and worked on a few pieces here and there, meanwhile it looked like KT would be a serious hiatus, so she began working on the songs in earnest, and finally released the finished product in February of this year.

“When I look back at Trickster,” Free observes, “that was so visceral...that was a lot of awakening. It was dark, and there were all these issues that I was dealing with. That was like purging my soul. Zerospace, I felt was like my spiritual path had taken me to this place of understanding that balance was important, so that I was able to see more of the light in things, but it was still fire, you know, like tough love. Because these things are definitely parallel to what I’m going through. I think that now [with Freedoming] I’m dealing with how important love is, and my observations and experiences with that. Like in the song “Around the Sun”, my friend called it ‘my happy fuck-you song’. Love and people are really important for me, so I think these songs kind of come from those observations.”

With her solo projects, Free is able to take on a different writing voice, and not feel like she is under pressure to write in a certain style, or say certain things. “I don’t feel the need to be aggressive. Kidneythieves would lend itself to being aggressive, or that fire. This is kind of like–I’m very relaxed into it. I don’t mind expressing even more beautiful things....I don’t feel any pressure about being cool or uncool. This is me.” She adds with a certain hint of wisdom beyond her years, “It’s empowering, and being a girl in the music industry is not the easiest thing. It’s definitely run by men, and I’ve definitely felt like I was their cute little prop or something. I don’t have to turn in a budget to anyone. I don’t have to ask anyone anything, and it’s very liberating.”

Born and raised in Texas to a mixed background of Cuban, Spanish, and German, Free finally took the plunge and moved out to Los Angeles when she was twenty-two. She had dabbled in music throughout her highschool years, but it wasn’t until she was California for a few years that she actually realized that being a full time musician and performer was what she wanted to do, and that she could make a living at it. Free remembers, “I had a couple of three years of getting off track, until I decided that it was time to do this. I had a couple of artist friends that I respected that said, ‘You know, you’re really good.’ I literally met Bruce two months later, and I decided to really go for it.”

Free Dominguez is already working on new material for another solo project as well as writing with Bruce. She’s currently working with Peter Mallick (who has worked with Norah Jones), and she says, “When you’re independent it really doesn’t take a lot to keep going. I could sell 7 000 records a year and live decently. I could sell 10,000 records a year and do great. With those kind of numbers, a record label would kick my ass out of the door. Because I have the fanbase of the Kidneythieves, and I’m getting new fans, I’m think that maybe there is something to this. I love communicating with people who are feeling something, and talk about the things that matter in life.”

Except this time around, she may be moving her studio to the kitchen. Things are flowing very easily, and she’ll have an albums worth of material by the end of the summer. “It’s real exciting, so I’m just going with it. But I’ve got to get a better studio,”she says laughing.

That's cool that she's working with Bruce for another project, even though they aren't sure if it's going to be kidneythieves or not. I'm still looking forward to that. Thanks for the article :)

Oooh, I love Kidneythieves. :D I just got into that band a couple months ago and they're my third favorite band now. I already have Zerospace and I wanna get the Trickser Reprocess CD whenever I get money and not automatically spend it on something else, which means I probably wont get it for a while. ^^;;

Heheh, Free and Bruce are so cool. I always have a hard time following what the hell Free is saying tho, ^^; I dunno, my IQ isn't high enough to easilly understand what she's trying to say or something.

As for the interview thingy, I'm confused. So Free's working alone, then working with Bruce a lil and working alone at the same time or...blah. I hope Kidneythieves isn't over. :(

If they are, I'll still definatly check out their solo albums and stuff though... :)

So the guys in kt (Bruce and co.) started a new band with another vocalist. It's called SHOCKNINA or some such and I have not heard any of their stuff as of yet. There's a website (http://www.shocknina.com) but as you can see, it's not real informative. There's apparently a new female lead named Nina who is supposed to be real good and committed to this new band and all. I haven't heard anything to judge one way or the other yet.

BUT their debut performance is Oct. 14 at Center Staging in the LA area (near the Burbank Airport).

Hmmm...I honestly dont know what to think of this.

I am severly intrigued by the prospect of the whole thing, though it wont seem the same without Free at the mic. But still, all judgement will, as always, be reserved for the initial listen. And I am hopeful.

I really love Free's solo debut and I hope she continues to make the quality music that this record shows.

Of course, does this also mean that KT has been officially dissolved?

Not "officially". All parties continue to say it's just a hiatus. I kinda doubt whether the boys will be able to pull off two different bands with two different female lead vocalists at the same time though.

I actually picked up thier latest from Best Buy. I didn't think they would carry it, but I lucked out and I grabbed the last one or the only one they had in stock. I would love to see them live. The music is much darker and more aggressive than Eva's. I like the cover of "Crazy". I knew I heard that song before. It just sounded so different.

Sorry to "bump" another one of these, but I just got into this band recently. Only got zerospace so far and I really like it.

Serene Dream.. is that just the most beautiful thing ever or what? I was wondering if this band have done any similar songs, or if there are other versions of that song in existence (i.e. demos, live recordings, etc.)?

Yeah, those two songs plus Serene Dream and Black Bullet are great. It's strange how I've had this album for a while and only yesterday did I actually start liking it. I've always loved Serene Dream, but the other stuff just didn't do it for me when I first listened to it. But thanks to Serene Dream, I decided to give them another chance and now I love them!
