The Open Door, track #8
Written by: Amy Lee

This is a short track. Lethal’s work is once again noticeable and Amy murmurs on this track as well.

Credit goes to julie for translation.

From ToD news (http://www.evboard.com/showthread.php?t=31982) thread.

From Metal Edge Magazine:

The most personal on The Open Door is “Like You”. “It is about something that’d hard to even talk about but feels good to write about,” explains Lee. “It’s about my sister who passed away when I was a little girl. I was 6 years old and she was 3. It’s affected my life and definitely affected my music writing, and it’s made me who I am. It’s one of those things that happens early enough in life that it forms you. I think in a lot of ways I made it a thing that I can use in a positive way in my life. I’ve learnt from it and grown up, and I’ve always felt older. Twenty-four sounds young to me, it’s weird.”
Having lost a sister at such a young age put things in perspective for Lee, who says she cherishes making music and wants to love. “What else is there?” she ponders. “I don’t care about the stupid things as much as I would if I hadn’t been through that. The song [‘Like You’] is about me from the perspective of a child back then, and I go back to that place a lot of times. I went there and wrote the song that way. It’s not the kind of thing that I would normally say on a megaphone in front of millions of people.”
“It’s something that changes you,” the singer stresses. “I love her, and I will always love her. Her spirit is always with us. I feel like I’ll always want to have a little place for her on every record. On the last record, it was ‘Hello,’ and I wrote that from the perspective of a child. I was talking about it in a little bit of a different way, but it’s the same inspiration."

---

"Like You"
Tense, mournful ... and the closest The Open Door gets to Fallen's world-beating ballads.
Amy Lee: "Like You" is maybe the most intimate song on the record. It was about losing my little sister when I was a child. On the last record, I wrote "Hello" about her. "Like You" is her place on this record.

LIKE YOU

Stay low
soft, dark, and dreamless
far beneath my nightmares and loneliness
I hate me
for breathing without you
I don't want to feel anymore for you

grieving for you
I'm not grieving for you
nothing real love can't undo
and though I may have lost my way
all paths lead straight to you

I long to be like you
lie cold in the ground like you

Halo
blinding wall between us
melt away and leave us alone again
humming, haunted somewhere out there
I believe our love can see us through in death

I long to be like you
lie cold in the ground like you
there's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you

You're not alone
no matter what they told you you're not alone
I'll be right beside you forevermore

I long to be like you, sis
lie cold in the ground like you did
there's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
and as we lay in silent bliss
I know you remember me
I long to be like you
lie cold in the ground like you
there's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you

I really love this song, The lyrics are really powerful and I think I like this song much more than Hello. It's really sad, but beautiful :(

I didn't even hear the music yet and I just about cried. No words, just...emotion.

It almost sounds suicidal, which kind of scares me. I've never lost a sister (never had a sister); I can't even imagine what it might be like for her even after all these years...

the first time I listened to the song, that is exactly what I thought of without knowing anything about it. It sounds like she is longing for her sister, yet at the same time she knows that her sister isn't gone, her spirit always lingers. amazing song, definitely caught my attention and almost brought me to tears

Oh. This song seems really sad. I wonder if Amy will be able to perform this live. Remember, she didn't play Hello live because it would be too emotionally painful.
How have you guys heard the songs?
Don't worry, though. I'm waiting for the album to hear it.

This song seems amazing. I haven't heard it yet though, I'm planning on listening to it when I get the album. But just from the lyrics it seems like it's connected to "Even in Death" like in the first verse

Give me a reason to believe that you're gone
I see your shadow so I know they're all wrong
Moonlight on the soft brown earth
It leads me to where you lay
They took you away from me but now I'm taking you home

Then also with the "People die, but real lives forever" part

Then in "Like You"

Halo
blinding wall between us
melt away and leave us alone again
humming, haunted somewhere out there
I believe our love can see us through in death

I long to be like you
lie cold in the ground like you
there's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you

To me, when I first read the lyrics, that connection just jumped out at me. The theme of loving someone still, even when they are gone, and doing anything to be with them. I don't know if anybody feels the same way I do.

I can't really see Amy singing this live, the song made me choke up just by listening. After I listened to this song, I just stopped playing the other tracks and the silence is really strange now.

i don't think this will be performed live. but if it is...the crowd had better respect it.

I don't know. I think she might perform it. She's expressed that she's moved on from her past (think Good Enough), so I think she might be ready to perform both Hello and this one.

Also, I just thought of this- she said that on every CD they've done she tried to put aside a song for her sister.

This is an amazingly somber song. I think this is about the saddest Evanescence song I've heard. It's right up there with Hello and Even in Death, anyway. And Tourniquet, I suppose. (Nice observation by Draconian that EID could very well be dedicated to Amy's sister as well.) Makes me teary. :(

I love the beginning and how they managed to work in the guitars throughout, especially at the climax towards the end. I thought the guitar would be subtle throughout. I also like the humming she does before the "Halo..." bit. The climax portion I'm mixed on. I think her voice drops lower too quickly, and part of me thinks the "forevermore" bit is a little overdone vocally. But another part of me likes how it's just this keening cry type of thing that practically drowns out the rest of the instrumentals.

As much as I'd love to hear this live, I'm thinking it's going the road of "Hello" and might not be. As great as it would be to hear it performed, I think it'd be a big downer. But maybe she has moved on in some respect and would be able to perform the song.

Nah that's the necrophilia song! :D

This song is really touching. Well okay it made me cry a lot. It's just so sad the part where she says "I hate me for breathing without you," like she feels guilty for being the sister that lived.

I don't know. It was just a guess. Because if she dedicates a song to her on every CD, then EID would probably be the one from Origin.

Considering how tender the subject is, I was REALLY suprised at the lyrics, especially the last verse. How blunt are they? So chilling.

This is an amazing song.. I love it. I think it's a great representation about how the band has grown.

Amy is not afraid anymore, she has grown confidence, and she's a lot more blunt in the way she sings about her sister. It's much more obvious what the topic is, whereas Hello expresses the emotion through the use of metaphor.

Fantastic song, deeply thought out.

IMHO, I dont think it resembles EID hardly at all. It is its own song, it is just written for the same person (if EID in in fact about her sister)

I'm not a singer, so I don't know the correct term for it, but I think Amy's learned to maintain control over her vocals better than ever before. Her voice just has this very defined tone whenever she hits the high notes, very different than in "Hello." She sings this spendidly! I don't really know how to explain it, but I like it. :)

I don't want to feel anymore for you

I believe our love can see us through in death

I love how Amy's voice sort of fades into the guitars at for you. It goes all wispy and magical. And again at in death. Those two bits seem so powerful to me.

my thoughts exactly. one of the first posts in her said this was a 'suicidal' type of song. i have to say i kinda agree. but really i think amy just knows that someday, she will see her sister again, so she isn't grieving.

I thought Field Of Innocence was about her sister. The whole "I still remember the world from the eyes of a child..." but I could be wrong.

I absolutely LOVE this song. It's very personal, and extremely deep. The lyrical content is phenominal. Kudos Amy. I know it's been tough on you, but the fact that you can go on and live, with or without her, is an amazing feat. It's hard, coming from someone who's lost siblings....Thank you for this. It gave me a reason to cry again.

Yemaya
09-05-2006, 01:31 PM
Can't say I heard Dolphin sounds personally, but there is a musical phrase in there that's been re-used from Give Unto Me, & if I'm right, I bet if you listen closely enough, Give Unto Me, Hello & Like You are all linked musically rather than just lyrically... This is a very powerful song there's no doubt what the song's about without even being told, I didn't read any of these threads before I heard these new songs, but yet it is very obvious the meaning's of most of them.

This is too emotional to be anything, really. Except maybe goth, because my personal defination of goth is extreme human pain/emotion turned into a beautiful art.

I somehow didn't notice the "sis" part. I really just have too many thoughts and feelings running around in my head to write any of them in English, so I guess I have to leave it at that.....

It's written from the perpective of how she felt as a child when her sister passed away. I think the "lie cold in the ground like you" is more like she wants to be with her sister again, than kill herself.

I agree. It's just that the only way she can do that is....well....to be dead.

I really don't cry for movies or songs that often, but even I tear up and get goosebumps with this song. It is the most emotional thing I have ever heard. I want it at my funeral. I guess I'll have to add it to my not-made-up-yet funeral playlist. (Because I'm morbid like that :p)

Deep feelings there. I imagine what it sounds like.
To go after her own sis and be with her, cuz she misses her, that day today.
Yeah, experiences from the childhood are deep and its beautiful her love for the sib.
'I long to be like you, sis
lie cold in the ground like you did'
Yeah, but, she's not cold, children that young go to Heaven. Thats comfort at least. And one day you meet with them up in Heavens.
And in spirit, while on earth, you with them, so its all good.
Although sad song, its about love, someone you could die for.

I'm petrified. All that pain...It's so sad and at the same time so beautiful. I listen to it and I wanna sceram "Take me with you!" without even knowing where I want to go or who I want to follow...It's a song about reality - death is real and we can't deny it exists. There are some things that just can't be forgotten - like the loss of somebody you love. I don't want to feel like this ever...

penquins and ducks. Maybe there happened to be a zoo near the studio and thy got an idea that some of the animals would maybe like to perform in they're new album too. The one's of the animals that are Evanescence fans.

I don't hear a penguin though. Must listen to it again.

Because of the death theme this is the gothiest song on the album.

The lyrics are awesome and she sings it emotionally. One of my faves too (I'm starting to fell that I've said that in almost every song's thread. Guess the whole album is my fave)

I must say that the first time I heard this song I didn't like it, I was giving an overall overview to the album and comparing it to the others, it was the less good song from the album and also I didn't understand what she wanted to say, but after listening more to it, reading the lyrics and some other people comments, I really like it, now I know what it's about and it's really sad.

When I first read that it was kind of the "second part of hello" I could not believe so so I ran to get the lyrics and listened to the song carefully, I was in shock, I could not believe she said all of those things just like that, even in some parts it reminded me of "Even In Death" but after the shock I really liked it.

After all I've said I just can add that I love this song, and though it's not my favorite one, I really love it, it's so deep lyrically and musically, one of the best "Lyric Writing" job in this album.

I've been listening to this song quite a bit recently, just because it is so beautiful and powerful. However, (as harsh as this sounds) it didn't make me cry, it just saddened me.

But for some reason, this time round, I put myself in Amy's place and imagined how it would feel to lose my own younger sister... and that was it, tears were streaming down my face...

I personally think it's "dead." It sounds like that, and IMO, "dead" makes the most sense.

Whenever she says "sis" I get this really tingly feeling in the back of my skull and I get that wave of sadness and misery coursing through my whole body that I only get when I'm REALLY sad/emotional. This song is truly in a league of its own.

Wow. Well what is there to say? I have yet to be able to listen to this song without choking up. I listened to it first and knew instantly what it was about and was moved incredibly, but it wasn't until I read the lyrics, the parts that I couldn't make out that I felt just a little bit disturbed. "Lie cold in the ground like you". That's chilling, and almost shocking. Incredible. And again, as I have felt with this entire album, I give Amy so much gd credit, the girl is fucking brave. It was different with "Hello", she never made it clear to anyone who wasn't in-the-know that it was for her sister, and with this song she didn't feel like she needed to hide it - which really surprised me. She even talked about it in an interview. Wow.
The most emotionally charged and gut-wrenching song of the album, hands down. And I'm moved and in awe. Just...incredible.

This is probably one of the darkest if not the darkest song on the album. It's sad, but so beautiful at the same time. I think Amy did a really good job with the lyrics, these are some of my favorite song lyrics on the album too. I also like how they incorporated the band into the song too! Definitely one of my favorites!

I think this song is lovely, but it doesn't have the same haunting, emotional kick to it that "Hello" did for me.

This one makes me sad, but that one still has me tearing up.

I don't know. The part where she says "sis" kind of distracts me and doesn't really flow all that well. I generally skip this one. Dunno why.

I think the lyrics are wrong.
it's

I long to be like you, sis
lie cold in the ground like you ter

agreed. I hear this also.

'Did' doesn't make sense here. It's past tense, unlike the rest of the song. Also, 'did' implies that something no longer is the way it was. I don't want to sound mean, but her sister is still dead, that didn't change.

I think she finishes 'sis' with 'ter', even if it's a whole line away.

I long to be like you, sis
lie cold in the ground like you, ter

I hope I just made sense.

I thought Lithium was going to be my favorite song on this album so far, but I've just heard Like You and I'm in awe, hypnotized by the strong lyrics, wiping tears from my eyes. It is a strong song lyrically and vocally and well frankly it rocks. I love this song and I'd love to hear it live but I don't know, Amy might have a tough time with it, who knows. I like the idea that Even In Death is the missing link so to speak as far as songs for her sister goes, was wondering about that after I read the interview. Looks like it's time to do some searching for this girl.

With that said I became creative and made this.

Pardon me if it's been said and please don't burn me at stake, but I think Amy Lee kind of exploits her sister's death with this song... I just think that it's very obvious that she's singing about the death with this song, not subtle and genuine like in "Hello." And, I could be wrong, but it seems like she wasn't using the song to channel emotions; it seems like she used it to play on the fact that most of her fans probably know that she had a sister that died, and that she could make a hit out of it. It's still a really good, pretty song though, and probably healthy for Amy...

Poisond&Hopelss
09-10-2006, 02:18 PM
Well, ok. Besides the fact that I don't know why *anyone* would want to exploit such a painful experience as a death in the family - especially at a young age - it's been mentioned in an interview that Amy has(and/or will) included a song about her sister on each of her albums as a way of honoring her memory, to keep her memory alive.
And the fact the Like You is a little more literal and straightforward than Hello could lend itself to Amy's finally coming to terms with it. Perhaps shes found more peace with the death. Although this song definitely proves that there is still a lot of pain there, it just feels like Amy's grown and is expessing it differently than in Hello.
Just my opinion, I don't pretend to know for sure what Amy feels/thinks/does. Whatev. I give her tons of credit for this song.

This song is so beautiful, but it makes me cry. I just can't imagine losing a sister. I don't want to imagine it. This is one of my favorite songs by Evanescence, the emotion is so intense just like the song Hello on Fallen.
Overall this song is amazing.

I have one question about the song...in the beginning of the song it sounds like someone is whispering really softly it sounds like Amy could be saying...breathe, please breathe...is it just instruments...or is it her whispering really quietly. I'm thinking it's just how the song is and there's no whispering...but I'm not quite sure.

i knew right when I heard this song it was about her sister
it's a little obvious in some ways
I really like that she writes about that so much
before I heard this song I was a bit iffy on the album and this made me like it a lot more, I just like the feeling from it.. idk how to describe it!

While "Hello" is quite a resonating song, for some odd reason, I think this one takes the cake in being more haunting. It's so much more powerful to me and gets my emotions going more than the aformention has (not to say it hasn't at all, just not as much).

I listened to this song over and over again while reflecting on 9/11. It made me think about all of those people who lost loved ones...they probably felt this way. And the fact that this song is sort of written from a child's perspective really cuts me to the core. Children grieiving is the most heartbreaking thing to wittness.

to me, this song seems as if that amy doesn't want to grieve for her sister anymore becuase it's taking over her but she cant help it becuase she misses her too much.

compared to "Hello" it's much more out there! she's saying what she thinks and feels. no metaphors. telling it straight and it's emotionally strong.

it's very sad! when i first read the lyrics, without listening to the music, i was shocked and nearly in tears! i feel for amy. i too wish i could change things for her :( i hope she knows that our support is here for her!

At first I wasn't as impressed with this song as I thought I should have been. I liked Hello better. But today, I was in my car and had ToD blasting, and this song came on. About halfway through, I realized how deeply unsettling this song truly is. I got goosebumps all over. I especially like when Amy sings "I long to be like you, sis" at the end. It makes it so much more personal and heartfelt than Hello was.

So beautiful,
yet so, so sad.

This song is so emotional.
In my opinion, I think it's more emotional than 'Hello'.
Probably because this song takes personal to a whole new level.

I think she says "I'm not grieving for you" because she says "I'm coming for you" right after it. :) It's like, she's not grieving because she knows that she'll see her again, not because it's taking over her.

I think she says that line because she has finally accepted the fact. And because she realizes that crying and grieving won't solve much, if anything.. it would just hold her back ;)

I have downloaded Like You and CMWYS because I wanted to know if this album is worth its salt. I was worried that it would absolutely suck and I would hate it. But I don't. I LOVE THESE TWO SONGS!!!

NOTE: I WILL BUY THE ALBUM. I REFUSE TO DOWNLOAD THE WHOLE THING B/C EVANESCENCE IS MY FAVORITE BAND. I JUST DOWNLOADED THESE TWO BECAUSE I WANTED TO KNOW IF BUYING THE ALBUM WILL BE WORTH IT. IT WILL!!! JUST THOUGHT I WOULD ADD THAT BEFORE EVRYONE STARTED ATTACKING ME ABOUT DOWNLOADING. I ALWAYS DOWNLOAD FIRST AND BUY LATER IF I LIKE THE SONGS.

I almost cried on "Lke You." For some reason it reminded me of that movie Prince of Egypt. I don't know why, but it did. It should definitely be one of their singles. It is very moving. I know how painful it is to lose someone you love. I have never lost a sibbling, but I have lost a few beloved members of my family, such as my grandpa TH (I get my writer's pen name from him) and my Aunt Janice. So I can relate.

The first time I read the lyrics, I was listening to the song at the same time..and I really connected with it, and it was making me cry. Me, someone was has NEVER cried because of a song. It was really powerful. I still cry sometimes when I listen to it, but only if I think too much about the lyrics. I think this one is a lot more personal than Hello. I mean, yeah, most hard-core fans(and some not-so-hard-core fans) realized that one was about her sister, but this one, you know, for sure its about her sister, and it makes it far more personal. Almost like I shouldn't be listening to it.

Personally this is the first song I heard out of all of them, and while I liked it at first it has dawned on me that perhaps it is the least distinctive song on the entire album.
Really, until the bridge it has nothing special that jumps out. (If one forgets the lyrics, anyway.)
It's a good song, although it is of my opinion that it's (musically) the least individual.

Lyrically...I think it's the best one. It's so obvious that it's not in fact about Shaun but about her sister, which I find touching. The other songs could be interpreted different ways but this one's message is so obvious that it's hard not to like it.

Okay, just gotta say I am in love with this song. This song is so sad but beautiful at the same time. It's so heartbreaking to listen to it. Amy sings it with so much emotion you can almost feel what she's feeling. When she sings, "No matter what they told you, you're not alone, I'll be right beside you forevermore" I get the chills. As someone else as I already siad, I find this song to be suicidal. It is almost like Amy is wanting to die so that she can be with her sister forever and be put out of the misery she has of missing her. I still really love it, though, because it is such a pretty song and the sadness of it just makes you want to cry. I can really fell Amy's pain about missing her sister from listening to this song and reading the lyrics. I believe this is one of the better songs on the album.

Absolute favorite song on the album! It's beautiful but oh so unbelieveably sad :( I'll admit to getting a little freaked out by the suicidal angle that it seems to be written in, but that's my interpretation. it's definately more "out there" than Hello. which is my 2nd favourite evanescence song. <3 them all!

The bit where she goes "I long to be like you (sis), lie cold on the ground like you (ter)" is very effective...also the "there's room inside for two" and "i'm coming for you" really freak me out...the whole song is just beautiful and sad...one of my favourites on the album!

yeah i also think it's (sis) (ter) i hoped that it will be written in the booklet but its not. :( :(

errm. i think its "ter"
"did" just doesnt make sence.
i mean did = past
but her sister is still laying there..

but she laid down once, years ago.. doing the action of laying down.. it sounds like "did" anyway..
i like the piece "no matter what they told you, you're not alone"... what a strong feeling in these words in amy's voice...

*like you* and *hello* are just so touching. For a few days I couldnt even listen to *hello* because it brought tears to my eyes.
But yeah, it is freaky that it sounds suicidal.
Its so hard losing someone you love. Its even harder to comeout and talk about it. Shows how brave Amy's being with her songs. More so in TOD.

It's not written in the booklet, so how do you know for sure? Unless Amy confirms it, otherwise it just sounds like "ter" to me.

Edited: ok, it's clarified now. I heard "did" this time!

...Because 'did' almost rhymes with 'sis'?

I long to be like you, sis,
lie cold in the ground like you did

No, not quite gramatically correct, but since when have poetry verses/lyrics stuck rigidly to proper grammar and syntax?

I'd like to know why you think it's "ter" and how that can make more sense than 'did'. I very clearly hear 'did' when I listen to it.

From the first time i listened to it i hear "did".
it makes sense..

Like you did - Lie cold in the ground like her sister did when she died -

i think is that what Amy wanted to say.

It's a very dramatic piece.

I love this song, one of my top3 favourites from TOD.

Ok fine, that makes more sense now, I separated the "did" from the sentence so it sounded weird. But now I know what you mean. Anyway, it would have been creepier if it was (sis)(ter) like some code...if you see what I mean. Anyway, end of discussion.

I never thought this would be a song that makes me really think about what's gone on in my life, but the other day, I felt pretty teary from listening to this. It felt quite saddening to know how Amy was feeling at one point of time when creating the open door. As a fan I just feel like I should be reminding her that she really is good enough

My first imopression of this song was that Amy tried to cram to much in lyrically and the melody couldn't hold it...

But that didn't last long.

At the moment this is definately my favorite song on the album. I love the end of the first verse

and though I may have lost my way
all paths lead to you.

I get this seriously creepy mental picture of Amy as a young girl, lying on top of Bonnies grave as if trying to get as close to her as possible though. It's disturbing and its making me cry.

I wouldn't be surprised if Amy did perform this one live. It's different from Hello; Hello was raw, stricken, desparate, grief however Like You is almost mournfully hopeful. It's a song of rememberance rather than an emotional outburst.

Personally I think it would make an amazing single however I think that could be pushing it a bit far

My favourite song of the new album. It really makes me think about different things in my life. It's sad but somehow beautiful. It kinda reminds me of the feelings I had when my grandpa died a few months ago & this song simply reminds me of him so much.

I hear "I long to be like you sis, lie cold in the ground like you did" I think it's more personal if she use sis cause it's about her little sister and I don't think she'd sing sister, I don't know why, it just makes more sense to me the word "sis"

Ravenheart
09-30-2006, 09:49 PM
Well it would hardly make sense to split one word up in two lines, now would it? "I long to be like you, sis, lie cold in the ground like you, ter" ? Yeah, that's amazingly brilliant English.

By saying "lie cold in the ground like you did", not only does it make sense, to me, Amy is saying that her sister isn't in the ground anymore - she's moved on to the next world, or Heaven or whatever you want to call it. And Amy wants to be with her.

"like you did" makes more sense than "you ter" and I think those of us who can hear it are probably right. :p

I'd imagine this track would sound pretty solemn if played with just the piano. But something about the arrangement of the crunchy guitars, the DJ Method tracks, the piano....makes it so creepy. And then when the heavy guitars and drum come in towards the end makes it sound like she's really really pleading.
I can't imagine writing this song, when I first heard it I thought it was eeiry, and now it's just super sad for me to hear it. I finally put together all the pieces and well, it's one of my favorites on the album. It's amazing how raw her emotions are in this piece. I never thought she would write such a literal piece about her sister's death, I imagined Hello was about it but it was so metaphorical to be sure. This song is so beautifully arranged, not just slow and ballady like Hello, but takes it to another level.
This is where the song hit me in the heart and fall in love with it:

You're not alone
no matter what they told you you're not alone
I'll be right beside you forevermore

I long to be like you, sis
lie cold in the ground like you did
there's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
and as we lay in silent bliss
I know you remember me

What an awesome video this would make....it's so visual. We can all dream I guess...

This song makes me cry. I've never lost (or had) a sister, but I lost my first real friend when I was 6. She had a heart attack even though she had no diagnosed heart problems and now my best friend has some sort of heart problem that no one can diagnose, which brings it all back and makes me really relate to the song.

Like a lot of people have said, when she says "sis" it's just so... real. I cried then. And when she says "I know you remember me" that for me just paints the picture of two little girls lying in a coffin together. I know it's morbid, but that one line really puts the whole song into a child's perspective.

The one thing I really hate is how the song runs into Lose Control. The two songs just DO NOT go at all. The emotional jump is so big, and if you're not still crying from Like You, you almost feel guilty about wanting to get into a song like Lose Control after such a sad song. And they share an end and a beginning like Tourniquet and Imaginary (but that transition never bothered me) so they don't sound right separated either. Grr... that really bothers me. I think it would be better if Your Star was there because that song could kind of bridge the gap... it's just my opinion though.

I love this song so much. It's so sad, poignant, and admittedly a little creepy.
The lyrics are unnerving. But I think I understand.
Does anyone else feel (and this could have been mentioned before because I haven't read through every single page) that, the soft percussion section between 'I'm coming for you,' and the murmur, 'you're not alone,' sounds like a weak body moving, almost in a trance, towards a grave? That's what I picture in my head...

This song reminds me of 'Even In Death,' and makes me wonder if Amy had Bonnie in mind when she wrote that, too.
I think Amy is so brave to put her emotions out there like this, and I hope it helps her.

Love always,
Gail xxx

Not sick. It's not like she is talking about getting devoured by worms or anything.

I think they are juvenile. "Lie cold in the ground like you...". I know she said she retreated to writing the song like a child, but it is possible to portray the emotions of a child without using the language of one.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but maybe she wanted to write it as a child would write it or would say it, not like someone older trying to portray a child's point of view.

It takes so much, courage, faith, Hope, believe, and Strength to write a song so deep as this one!! Amy, you are such an insperation, and show so much strength, I will always be greatful, honor, respect, and support, and always stand by you!! Thank you for always being Just YOU!! I really felt the pain of it and still do, The hardest part is the part when she says *I Hate me for breathing with out you* Thats how I felt for weeks after I lost my sis. She was older then me so she was always there then to lose her it was like losing myself. :(. I just wish it would have came out sooner, it may have helped me thought it sooner, This song was like theropy, I could just play it over and over and let all of the emotions go, and not feel alone for once.

I don't know if anybody has mentioned this, but the lyrics go

"THE humming, haunted somewhere out there"

Yeah, just clearing that up.

I personally adore this song. It's so deep and powerful. I know tons of people like Hello better, but I prefer this one. It makes me cry 80% of the time I listen to it.

Here's a random bit of info: in the piano book, the lyrics "I long to be like you, sis, like cold in the ground like you did" weren't there. It was just the same chorus as at the beginning. Maybe Amy just thought of adding that beautiful part to the song during recording? I don't know...

I feel so sad for Amy that she still feels like she'd want to be in the cold ground with her sister - I wonder if she has actually dealt with her grief, because it seems like the two songs, Hello and Like You are songs in which she openly grieves, while she's singing, if you know what I mean...

Among other ones as well, all at the same time.
I don't like to mension this, because its really personal to Amy,
But I know exactly how she feels, when she lost her little
sister, 20 years ago.
I don't know what, or what it takes to get past the grieving stage,
or how to over come, and of the feelings and emotions I am feeling
right now.
This is one of the very main reasons, As to why, I really respect Amy
We can relate to SO many things, and have been through so many of the exact same things as well.
This is also why I will always stand by her, and always defend her.
She writes such amazing music, it just

Songs like these, make me think in a whole other way.
I would never take my siblings for granted, because you never
know, it is just that fast, you can lose them, and have to live
with all that regret, for the rest of your life.
I am sure, that one memory still haunts Amy, but she has learned
how to deal with it now, and knows her little sister watches her

I definitely prefer Hello over Like You. I feel that you'd really need to be a true musical artist to write something like Hello, whereas, I feel as though any amateur could've written Like You; there just isn't any depth to it like there is with Hello. I honestly don't care for songs that are very superficial in meaning, because I think music should be more than that and real artists will create music above that.

Of course there's something to be said about being straightforward and honest, but I don't believe it was the best approach in terms of the content of these songs, especially now that we're able to compare the two back to back. It's an emotional song, but that's because it's about losing a family member... the content of the song creates the interest, not the song itself. Whereas Hello has more to stand on.

seems like Amy will put every feeling and motion into it.
Making it very powerful, deep, extreamly heartfelt, and So very real.

The first time listening to the song (and I'm sure someone has already mentioned this but I don't have time to read all the posts) I didn't notice her saying, "I long to be like you, sis". After listening to the song a few times I picked up on it and actually had to play it for someone to make sure I wasn't hearing things.

I love this song, it's very well done and very emotional, it makes me want to cry. Amy Lee has such a powerful voice and such a gift for music and lyrics, it constantly amazes me.

This song is so deep for me. It's very sad. It's funny because I brought this album in October of '06, and I loved this track. My Grandma died in November, and "Like You" took on a whole new meaning for me. I really wanted to be like her; wanted to do myself in so I could be with her again. She was my best friend.

This is definitely one of Evanescence's deepest and most heartfelt songs.

Yes... its a very sad song. It shook me up, but I couldn't cry. :( Shame on me. I swear... at the intro it says: 'Please breathe, please, please breathe.'

yeah... i think i heard something in the intro too. i'll have to listen to it again.
her songs are so powerful, but this one in particular shook me up the most.
I cried myself to sleep after listening to it. this song is so powerful!!!

I hear this too. It gives you the mindset of a child, looking at a dead person that they love and thinking, "Please breathe..."

That verse....Please Breathe please, please breathe
I just started bawling my eyes out. :(:(
I can only imagine how Amy felt, just having to sing this
song in the recording studio.
Being able to sing this song staight through...that took so
much courage, and so much strength.
<333 To Amy and all the strength she really has and expresses.

Yeah it is really sad. I was in the same moment that Amy. She lost a sister and I lost a brother :(

Seems like i'm getting a blow with a stone-hammer in torax..
Weird isn't?

I've owned TOD since it was released, and for the longest time, I didn't make a connection as to what the lyrics meant... I think I got caught up so much in the music that I didn't pay attention or something. Anyway, when I realized what this song was about, it really struck a chord... I lost my younger sister as a child as well, and even though it's been over 20 years, I've been having a really hard time dealing with it lately (I think giving birth to my daughters, and knowing that they would never know her brought back those emotions more than anything).

As sad as it is, I'm glad Amy was able to write this song, because when I'm having a hard time dealing with my loss, I listen to it and it helps me to realize that I'm not alone.
