I believe in the line 'Whispering secrets in rain' they actually sing 'Whispering secrets in vain'.

Yeah they probably do actually... the message in the song is great. I love how Ev can put things so brilliantly.
Well the way I interpret the song is: to appreciate and enjoy the small things in life - take nothing for granted. That's what I think it's about.

I'm pretty sure the line 'That story be more than it hides' is actually 'Their story before they hit ground'.

Due to the fact the song is performed by a choir and people can end up slightly out of sync when ending words and phrases, you're likely to end up with many different versions of the lyrics.

Though I'm pretty sure the above lyrics are the right ones...

yea, i didn't think "their story be more than it hides" made much sense to me, i always heart "before they hit ground" also. i was suprised to see that somebody else did too! anyway, i really love this song. i actually just tought my own arrangement of it to my high school audition choir. turned out amazing!

This song makes my insides melt and my heart pound. It truly does! I heard it for the first time last night and I was jumping up and down. It is hard to express how beautiful and precious it is. I can't believe how good her high school choir were! I mean, I'm not exaggerating when I say there were some seriously good singers at my old school - one just won Stars In Their Eyes Kids! - but as a choir, we sucked.
Amy must have been a great president.

I agree... I love when they sing.... I stand alone in the storm..Suddenly sweet words take hold... Love it... I always thought it was sung.. I stand alone in the "Dark"... Suddnely sweet words "They Come".. Must have been wrong...

Amy always creates an outstanding choral arrangement for any song she puts together. This one is just as amazing! She puts in a lot of crescendos at the perfect moments in the piece making it very detailed.

Hey dose anyone know if she sang in it or played the piano? Cause at the time Ben play piano too.

I made an arrangement too- I added a fifth part, it was actually pretty cool... I'm thinking next year I'll show my choir teacher... choir nerds, we all rock!

Original Post: There's a rumor, and on here, that Amy wrote this as a SENIOR prject, but in the unauthorised DVD, After Midnight, the woman who is talking, sorry can't think of the word, says something like "John was getting tired of his DROP OUT daughter." Somewhere along those lines, and as the woman was saying this they showed a cascading picture of Amy. Anyone know anything about this. But I know for a fact that Amy played the piano in this song though, unless who, and where, I heard it from was lying or tried to pass it off as they knew what they were talking about.

Edited Post: The woman on the unauthorised DVD, After Midnight, says something about John gettin gtire dof his drop-out daughter.

Ok. On the unarthourized DVD "After Midnight," it's a quote about Amy being a drop-out.

"Creative duces were flowing, but Amy's dad was getting tired of his drop-out daughter."

John says:

"When your child is in development, out of college, as a parent you're kinda going 'Yea.. okay great.' because you're really waiting for something to happen and nothings happening. Ah.. in development you're writing, you're depressed, you're the poor musician that has nothing. You're occasionally going to the beach to get your head together, uhm you go to the movies a little bit. There's not much going on and when people say 'Hey, what's your daughter doing? Is she in college?' I -- I had kinda grown tired of Ben being in the band and all that 'cause I didn't think they were getting anywhere."

The the woman, who is narrating, says something that Amy and the band had their hearts set on the big time, and Pete Mathews went to L.A. and showed someone at Wind-Up, after a meeting, "Origin" and they said "Yes." He, Pete, played Amy's "My Immortal" and he said there wasn't a dry eye in the room, or somethign to that stance.

So was the woman talking about High School or College?

Excuse my double post, but it's actually

"That story be more than it found"

The pronunciation is a little off so it sounds like "hit ground" or "hide" but it's "found" in my book.

And just notice how on "Please" it sounds like "Prealse."

But "Hit ground" seems like it wound fit but i'm just not hearing "ground."

Yeah, it's def. a song where the lyrics can be misheard because of the choir singing.

I actually attempted to suggest this song to my choir director in hopes she'd have one of our choirs sing it, but she didn't give me an answer, which usually means no.

Still a beautiful song, and to think a highschooler wrote that is just inspiration to all us highschoolers out there looking for inspiration in the music department.

I have kind of an ending to this song. It's called "Outro" and it's about 35 seconds long. It's kind of like a wooshy sound. I dont' know how to explain it. Is supposed to be on Origin? Cause i know this song cuts off really fast at the end on "Listen." I wasn't sure...

EDIT: It's from the album Le Nouveau Gothique {which i think is a bootleg isn't it?}

Only track I know that's 35 seconds long is the title track of the album.

It's actually the track that starts the album and leads to Whisper.

I have a recording of a choir doing it that I downloaded off of MP3rocket. I could post it on my myspace music page tommarrow if you want..and you can download it off of that. It's faster then actually getting it off of a downloading service.

That's really funny because I just saw you talking about this song on T-Minus Rock today and I was wondering wether or not you'd come to us to get it.

I first heard it on a crappy bootleg "re-release" of 'Origin' that I bought on eBay for $20 and you know what, it was worth it just for that one song. Very beautiful.

Ah, thanks for the lyrics...I would always get confused when the harmonies break out. Isn't it weird how you can hear it better after you know what the lyrics are?

Wow, I'd like that, too.

Lorelei

Yeah, but that's cause you know what you're listening for :p And probably because it makes more sense...

I have to say, I was just listening to it there and I love the syncopated "Listen, Listen" section at the beginning, and then everyone smoothely come in together for "Listen to each drop of rain". They come in so perfect!

^^

Definitely. I've always loved choral stuff for some reason - this song, Russian choirs in a few movie scores, that sort of thing.

As much as I've liked being a pianist over the past 10ish years, there just isn't much that can contend with the hauntingly beautiful, powerful sound from a well-done choral or symphonic bit (or both together :) ).

I spent weeks of my grade twelve year trying to transcribe it for the choir I accompanied, but I was so busy that it never happened. My teacher had even agreed to do it if I could produce a score for him.

Then, of course, just a couple months ago I happened by a fairly accurate transcription. Wanted to shoot something.

I always thought that it should be sold as sheet music so stupid people like me don't have to tear their hair out trying to figure out all the notes :D

However, hearing it re-recorded would be just as awesome. Maybe both? (Though I don't have a choir to manipulate anymore...)

CrystalTears
08-10-2006, 09:45 PM
I could understand what you mean, i would go nuts if that happened to me. I really like this song though and next year i'm going to go insane to find sheet music then see if i can get the choir teacher to let us sing it

Edit: does anyone know if Amy sang during the 'recording'? or if she just conducted the choir? hmmm...that doesnt seem like the right word...gimme a break i havent been in band since 8th grade!!

Thanks for the lyrics Amy. it's great to be able to sing it now without going,

"for someone to hear... a story la da....mmmda...bah.. please don't let go"

It's surprising how she said she still likes this song actually. Her and Ben have always said how they're not very proud of their earlier stuff (from what I've heard anyway).

This must be one of those few songs that she still loves.

I googled it but just found a load of pages mentioning choir presidents but without saying what they actually were.

I loved this song, I have it on my MP3 player at the moment along with a few others, Exodus is my favourite though, I tell you I'd kill (not literally) to be in that choir, the song is just so lovely, ok I'm being a sap, I think there're a few songs that Amy & co. should re-record, Exodus, Listen to the Rain, Before the Dawn, Away from Me, Solitude (Right up there with Exodus), Where will you go...there are so many!!!
I just wondered, if Evanecence published the sheet music for this, would it have all of the parts in it??? It'd be a lovely song to teach a school choir is all or any choir for that matter (With Amy's permission of course)

I think this along with Away From Me and Eternal would fit brilliantly in an encore at a live show. 'Away From Me' could be the last song before the encore, they could go into the little part of 'Eternal' before the storm kicks in, then as the storm kicks in the band could leave the stage. Amy could come back for 'Listen to the Rain' with just a small light on her and the piano, sing it with maybe an Amy choir as backing :p then towards the end of the song, the band could come back in the darkness of the stage and as soon as the last 'Listen' is sang, they could kick into a heavier song like 'Tourniquet' and end the show with 'Imaginary.'

I think that Amy played the piano in it.
I asked my music teacher to try this song with our choir (I could call it ensemble because there were only 4-5 people in each part) last year. It sounds amazing!!!! I sang in alto part. Most of singers said its ecclesiastical canticle once heard, but after a performance in our school, said it's the most beautiful song they've ever sang! It's realy UNREPEATABLE!!!!

this song is really relaxing...i love it! i also love the way amy was asked about her choir days in the t minus rock countdown...and she talked about the song! it sounded like she expected it to get leaked...crazy. i thought it was interesting how the host pestered her to sing it...she said she couldn't remember the words....and so she sang it all over dramatic. it was pretty funny!

After reading the rest of the posts on here...

I now hear the right words, boy were mine off! I've been trying to learn the piano part to Eternal (After...crap... what was it called... Away From Me and Before Listen to the Rain) It would be totally awsome if someone could find that because the site i go to to get fan-made music for evanescence, well... they suck so I end up haveing to read the music and play by ear at the same time. *dies* And we all know how hard that is!

And also i vote a HELL YEAH! on re-recoarding this song!

really!!! well every EV song is a masterpiece but I really love this one.
Maybe because it's different from other Ev songs, maybe because Amy's choir sings......

I dunno......... I just love it :D

Listen to the rain is cool... I listened to it a lot a couple of years ago, I should search inside my "old song archives" to find it again! :)

What do you think about an all-girls choir doing the song? I know that the men add the low, sad longing to the sound quality, but unfortunately all we have at my school is girls...

I just want to know if you guys think that all-girls can still make it sound beautiful.

That would be beautiful. You could definately do that, you'd probably just have to do a different arrangement.

The recorded version is SATB (Soprano-Alto-Tenor-Bass). You COULD just do a Soprano-Alto version, but you'd lose a lot of the song. I think your best bet is to do a SSAA (Soprano I-Soprano II-Alto I-Alto II) version of the song. You could make the Soprano part the Soprano I part, put the tenor part up an octave and make it the Soprano II part, use the alto part as the alto I part, and put the bass part up an octave and make it the alto II part. Then again, I'd have to look at the sheet music to see if putting the parts in that order would make sense, but it would probably sound good.

I do choir arrangements all the time. PM me if you need any advice.:)

That's the same version i got but If you listen closely i think that person added notes because if you read the music as you listen there are 'soundless notes' as i would call them where they are written but aren't actually played and if they are...

The choir drowns them out... Drown...rain... I hate puns lol!

Thanks! I'm glad you think so. I still have to strike up the conversation with my choir teacher, but maybe we could make it work.

It would be cool, but if you can see if some girls can sing the bass/tenor part, don't know what part the guys sing, and then maybe that would work. *shrugs*

I would love if you recorded it again! That song is so amazingly beautiful, one of your best songs. I have it on my origin cd (not the real origin cd though). I love the rain, and that song makes me love it even more. Everytime it's raining that song comes up in my head.
I really love your old songs, they shouldn't be forgotten, not that they ever will be, they are to good to be.

I just got an idea. Amy, if you would re-record Listen To The Rain and would have a choir on it in the background, wouldn't it be cool to have a choir with fans (who can sing of course) from all over the world on the recording? Just a thought.. It would be great though :D and I wouldn't mind singing in the choir hehe ;)

I wonder what Amy would sound like if she sang this song. Maybe one day, if we get really lucky, she'll spice up the lyrics, sing this song, and have the choir in the background. Then, maybe, I'll wake up.

This is just out of curiousity.

Has anyone ever seen vocal choir sheet music for this song?

I really want to get my choir to sing this, but the teacher wants me to find out if there is any sheet music for this song.

*Amy, I really think you should re-record this song, it so beautiful, and it would be amazing if you re-record it ^^*

i've made a choral arrangement of this piece and had it performed by my high school choir, taught and directed by me. someday maybe i'll stop being selfish and let people have it. until then, i'm not sure my hours of work will allow me to let it circulate it freely over the web quite yet.

i am a choir nerd myself, i've been in choir at my various schools since 6th grade. the choir at our school rocks! earlier this year in april, we went to a competition in new york, were in the highest division, choirs were there from all over the country. we learned our 3 difficult songs in about a week with only 2 real rehersals while everyone else was probably spending months on their stuff. and we won! it was so amazing! anyway i don't know why i am saying all of this but anyway what i was trying to say before i got distracted, which happens a lot to me, is that i love that song and it would be amazing if you guys recorded it again!!

A rerecording would be nice. We all deserve it and I think it may be fun for Amy, too. It should be our treat for being so great and loyal.:D Well, it didn't hurt to try.:)

I'm falling in love with this song. I'm a choir nerd myself, and I love listening to choirs, all the harmonies and stuff. I would soooo love to sing this for the spring concert, but, like so many, I lack the sheet music.

It would be cool if they re-recorded it, but I don't think they should use a professional choir for it; I like the youthfullness of the voices in the recording.

I have an SATB with Piano sheet music to it but the words are wrong. You'll just need to correct them like I did. If you want it PM me. It's in .pdf so you'll need adobe reader to view and print it.

My high school choir is singing this song at our spring concert, at least that's what my teacher said before she went on maternity leave last school year. :D

^_^ this song is pure amazing. a friend of mine loved it(i think) and she said she was gonna request it to our choir teacher. the music sheet you gave us, idk. i tried reading it, it dosnt seem right.....:( but, i think its usuable if its corrected. lol. i would love to use it for our choir, but we just suck. no one wants to sing in our choir, so i suggested it to my friend who's in a group called women's coral. and they are alot better. lol. or was it cantorm....probably cantorm. lol.
