The Open Door, track #4
written by: Amy Lee
Said to be "full-bodied", according to a Canadian article about the band's new album.
Confirmed by Amy at the Milan TOD premiere that this will be the second single off the new album.
---
"Lithium"
"Don't want to forget the fear of lithium." One of several songs Lee sings in a lower register.
Amy Lee: I wrote the chorus on the guitar when I was about 16. I always thought it was a cool chorus, but I never used it for anything. I started playing it on the piano and the verses came out. I have a pile of pieces stowed away in my mind that maybe I'll use some day. In a way it's an old song, but not really. It grew up.

LITHIUM
Lithium- don't want to lock me up inside
lithium- don't want to forget how it feels without
lithium- I want to stay in love with my sorrow
oh but God I want to let it go
come to bed, don't make me sleep alone
couldn't hide the emptiness you let it show
never wanted it to be so cold
just didn't drink enough to say you love me
I can't hold on to me
wonder what's wrong with me
Lithium- don't want to lock me up inside
lithium- don't want to forget how it feels without
lithium- I want to stay in love with my sorrow
Don't want to let it lay me down this time
drown my will to fly
here in the darkness I know myself
can't break free until I let it go
let me go
Darling, I forgive you after all
anything is better than to be alone
and in the end I guess I had to fall
always find my place among the ashes
I can't hold on to me
wonder what's wrong with me
Lithium- don't want to lock me up inside
lithium- don't want to forget how it feels without
lithium...stay in love, mm-hmm
ah, I'm gonna let it go

This is from the French magazine article, posted in ToD news thread. Credit goes to julie for translation.
The enchanting duo consisting of vocals and piano immediately reminds us of My Immortal (single off Evanescence’s previous album). When the drums and guitars come in, the atmosphere becomes even more solemn. The vocals take care of emotion and consequently sadden the listener, thus reminding us of songs off Origin (Evanescence’s genuine first album). This song is the first album’s highlight/marker.

I connect with this song so much it's not even funny. I'm almost crying.
I always expected this song to be about something else, I don't know what, but just....something else. She kept mentioning in interviews how she's almost afraid to be happy. I guess I should have expected her to have written a song about it. Love you, Ames.

Is this song partly about "You-know-who"? I think this will be one of my favorites. Origin was a beutiful creation, as I'm sure this is.

Isn't Lithium supposed to be a metaphor? What do you think it means? Did she say what it was in the Canada Interview?

in terms of the style of writing, this song is closest to Fallen. Amy said the album was blunt in the lyrics, yet this song is a huge metaphor, just as most of Fallen was. Still an awesome song. Amy's voice soars to places I never even thought of going. Another winner!

Just guessing:
1) Not a nirvana song
2) The lightest metal... and it even reacts with water (impressively!) Reading the lyrics I connect that with a (momentarily) imaginary girlfriend exploding though being calmed down. Ask me again on the 29th.

Also, Lithium is used in mood stabilizers used to treat bipolar disorder and other mood disorders.

When the whole 'metaphor' thing was brought up, I went back and read the lyrics and listened to the song again. and it seems like this song is easily translatable to mean anything. Lithium, as some of you have said, is a relief, a treatment for sorrow or what have you. Thus, 'Lithium' could mean one of many many things. Love, music, friends, family, etc. in my case, my Lithium is Ev's music, and writing. this made the song have even more meaning to me.
brilliant

Honestly, I think it can be even bigger, than MI. It is def the strong song and perfect, as I've already said. Everything's perfect in it.
Lithium would surely do great as a single. It's a beautiful song, the first one that stuck in my head from ToD. And with Amy saying "lithium" so many times, a regular listener is sure to remember the song, should he/she like it enough. ;) It's both emotional, and catchy (but not in the commercial/poppy way).

I love love love this song. It's my new CMWYS, except x10. I predict that one day it will indeed beat the 1111 plays of CMWYS I have. Me and Shivercide are currently fighting over who gets to have it--we're locked in an epic tug-of-war <3.
When I was envisioning the album, this kind of song was exacting what I was hoping would be on it. I just wish there were a couple more dramatic power ballads like this one. Hopefully the b-sides will be promising.
I'm so looking forward to the video for this especially. Assuming it's a single... I don't know how it couldn't be.

On another note, this was the first song that really stuck out to me. And I absolutely love it. I listened to it a couple of times and sat there thinking, "Wtf does lithium have to do with anything?" And then I did some research and ended up being all "OOHHHH!" Yeah, total duh moment. I also thought I was over-analyzing the song, but then realized that for once I wasn't.
Now I have the urge to listen to it again. Goddammit...

this has to be one of my favorite songs, it stays in my head for hours after listening to it! to me this song is about about how Amy always finds herself in a sad mood, and she's scared to be happy although she hates being so depressed. eventually, after debating over it through a few verses and chori, she decides its time to let go of the sadness and let herself be happy

For those who don't understand what lithium is, or what it has to do with anything:
Lithium is a psychiatric drug used as a mood stabilizer...often prescribed to people with bipolar disorder and/or mood swings, along with other mood disorders.
I took lithium for several years, and I can relate to this song so much that it's crazy. Lithium took my sadness away...but then I didn't know who I was anymore. I'd clung to my sorrow for so long that I felt more like myself with it than without it. I almost wanted to hold on to it just because it was familiar. But in order to live and be free, I had to let it go.
I hope that makes it a little clearer

Now that I read that, I think I am in a similar sittuation to the song.
For some reason since I was a little kid I have been hiding any kind of feeling at school. When I was mad, happy or sad, I was still like.. emotionless. But when I got home I had like so many emotions trapped that I didn't know how to release them... then a few years ago I discovered *coughMyBrotherIsPsicologystcough* that I enjoy sadness aswell as I enjoy happiness because what I really want is to feel my emotions... ok, my story is a bit strange but this is one of the things that makes me love this song...

And that is so true. That's exactly how it was with me. I was diagnosed bipolar and took lithium, it really made me feel better, made me concentrate on what I needed to, but I felt like something was missing. I guess sadness grows on you, the depression cuts deeper every day until you're so used to it you almost DON'T want to let it go.
This has to be my favorite track on this album, mainly because the lyrics really hit home for me. On top of that, the music is so beautiful, her voice is so clear and it's just gorgeous. I love it a lot. :)

Sometimes I'm just wondering...Why are there so many sad people in the world? And why didn't my mother even guess how I've felt before listening to this song? This is the song that completely obsessed me when I heard it. It was just like me - loving my pain, which has turned into my last friend, hiding in the shadows, feeling the bliss of crying all day and watching the world go by without saying a single word...
Yes, the song is amazing, but I'm not sure it's good for a single. I don't know...I just think it'll lose a part of it's charm when the journalists strat analyzing it, thinking who is supposed to be the mentally disordered person, who's a drug addict or whatever. The press can really ruin every feeling anyone of us had to this song.

One of my favs because there is nothing "weird" about it. No sudden out-of-nowhere tempo changes. No electronic voice alterations. Just Amy's beautiful voice, and moving lyrics.

Well, it worked for Pink Floyd.
It's speculated Lacrymosa's about him, but that's pretty much it at this point. That's 7.7%. Have you even listened to the album yet or are you just falling into the Amy bashing fold? Nothing is obviously about him, including Lacrymosa.
Lithium isn't about Ben because Amy said what it was about in an interview (http://www.sonybmg.com.au/musicbox/home.do?bclid=70421132&bctid=196250945) she did. She's said it's about how she was "in love" with her sorrow.
Quoth the Amy:
"Lithium's definitely a metaphor. I felt like I was in love with my sorrow, which I've always been. I get into these moods where I write music and it's not so much depressed--it's just this kind of strange low that I ride. At the same time I wanted to be free and break through and be happy, and I think that was kind of me getting ready to just be like, 'That's it' and just drop the ball and change and move on."
edit: This was posted by ellies regarding the little London meet the UK people got to have with Amy/John:
(Question) What was the inspiration for the lithium?
- After a few words with John (soerry didn't hear what they were talking about) she shouted : Shaun Morgan!
She said that it was about how she felt at that time: either you feel miserable and write songs about being miserable or do something to be happy. It's the song about making yourself happy.

This song is definitely my favorite so far. The part where she sings "oh but God I want to let it go"....geez...something about the way she says it. I remember way back when Amy said something about the album and how it was going to be sexy. When I first heard that I was like what the hell? How can it be sexy? But listening to that part in Lithium I totally get it now. That part gives me the chills.

God, this song's gorgeous...
"always find my place among the ashes"
This is a bit of a common theme... Not so much on the album (well, perhaps, I'd have to look through the lyrics a bit more), but definitely in fan poetry. Another analogy for worthlessness. Nice way to state it =].

I've been listening to this song for the past half hour or so, and I have to say...I am connecting with it more and more. My best friend Charmed told me that it reminded him of his ex and my relationship with my mother - my mother is seriously addicted to several psychotropic drugs, and uses them to numb herself so she doesn't feel any emotion anymore. Whenever something goes wrong, either in my life or in hers, she believes that drugs are the answer. I refuse to take any drugs, because I don't want to have that be my outlet for coping. I'd rather feel pain than feel nothing at all - just my opinion, of course.
The song is so incredibly haunting and desperate. I love it so much.
I guess that's all I have to say.
Amazing work, Evanescence.

I asked Amy what inspired her to write Lithium and she said that in short its about Shaun Morgan. I can't remember what else she said dam that free bar and my nervousness but it was along the lines of being really down and just wanting to hide away when she feels like that and almost thinking she liked the feeling and wanting to keep it.

This song to me is very special. I'm fighting my own battle with clinical depression and this song just expresses EVERTHING I'm feeling at this stage in recovery. Most songs about the subject tend to be..well...depressing lol. However, my interpretation of this song just shows how hard it is to let go but in the end, you have to. It's just not worth it anymore.
I know Amy probably intended this song to mean something else but really, whats the good of music if you can't have your own meaning for it right?
I love this song and it makes me feel so much better when I'm doubting my own sanity.

Yet again, another awesome song. I love the feel to this. It starts off all gentle and then turns into badass rock... The best kind of intro ever. I love the lyrics to this one. It brings a tingle to my spine thinking of this song.

I think this is the most popular song of The Open Door right now, most people prefer this one. It's a great song in my opinion, but it's not the best one (Anyway I love it) The song starts very well with the choir played by Amy's beautiful voice, that's improving more everytime, it really sound like she's feeling it, and she's not singing because it's going to give her a lot of money.
Also the music is great, it starts as a very low ballad and then from nowhere it turns into a heavier rock song that sounds amazing in combination with Amy's voice tone at that part, all I can say is that this song is amazing!

I've never wanted to cry through a live performance from a band ever, until last night (London TOD world premiere). Before Amy even mentioned this song was about Shaun, I felt like crying as she was playing it as I was pretty sure it was about Shaun. Not only is the song absolutely beautiful, but she sang with more passion than I've ever seen her sing a song before. You could see so much emotion being released within her with this song. 'let it go' It's the perfect ending. I'm glad Amy has finally been able to let go.

It's well know that Amy puts a lot of emotion in her songs when she's singing, but I can not imagine how would this song sound live, it has a lot of emotion by itself, and being played live would make it even more emotional

Lithium is one of the two songs on the album (the other being Like You) that just tears my heart out. The emotion that Amy put into this song is so palpable, and it is absolutely so full bodied, it fills your head. What an experience. Just...wow. I was blown away by it.

Wow. This song is just...perfection, in my opinion. Currently it's in my favorite slot. I think the lyrics can be related to in so many ways. These lines:
I want to stay in love with my sorrow
oh but God I want to let it go
gives me goosebumps. The lyrics describe something I've always felt but didn't know how to, identify, I suppose. My guess is it'll be AMAZING live. Sounds like it already is from what I've read about the UK show. I immediately loved this song, but the whole album is starting to really grow on me. <3
Lithium isn't about Ben because Amy said what it was about in an interview (http://www.sonybmg.com.au/musicbox/home.do?bclid=70421132&bctid=196250945) she did. She's said it's about how she was "in love" with her sorrow.

I really like this song. It reminds me a bit of "My Immortal." A little. The guitar is a little distracting sometimes, but there's some nice, understated string use here. And there's just a gorgeous high note toward the end. The vocals on this one are superb.
I think the subject matter of the song is very easily relateable. I believe most people have, at some point or another, found that they are the most creative in their saddest states. I find myself often unable to write when I am in a good mood. It's a sad thing. Most creative people I know have some sort of psychological problem, and when given the option to take medication for it, will decline because they don't want to lose that creativity. I myself took anti-depressants for a long while, and ended up stopping because I missed my writing. A lot of the time, the creativity is enough to keep you going, even when you feel terrible.
So I guess I, too, am in love with my sorrow. Because of what it's allowed me to create.

The consensus seems to be that it's her apartment, since she's said she lives in an old church (converted to apartments) with stained glass windows. That's our Amy! If I was her I'd build an altar to myself, with Fallen merchandise, etc.

Hello,
Love Lithium, it breaks my heart together with Lacrymosa. This music transcends other things that are playing on the radio on so many levels.
I don't know what it is about Evanescence, but I am so drawn to their music and this new album is no exception.
I have to say the three year wait was totally worth it! I'd rather wait for a band like Evanescence to write high quality songs than have them put songs together in a hurry. AND I'll wait another three years for a follow up album as long as they keep writing music like the new album.
I think a person that can write a song like Lithium and adapt a classical song into a modern rock goth song (Lacrymosa) is going to keep writing brilliant music for a long time for us to enjoy!
I can't wait to hear them live performing the new album for the first time at Kool House in Toronto!!! AND I definitely cannot wait until I get my hand on some CD's on October 3rd!!!

for those of you who dont know why the song is called lithium, i just found out! i thought lithium was a silvery metal. it is, and that's its only definition. but the reason this depressing song is called lithium is because lithium somehow has an effect on people's moods and is used on seriously depressed people. so i guess it's an ingredient in anti-depressant pills

I like the lyrics to this song, but for some reason it doesn't appeal to me that much. I'll listen to it without skipping it, but it's just not my favorite. I love the emotion in her voice, but at the same time, the beat and rhythm kinda seemed to bore me a bit, except for I think the last chorus. It may be hard to believe, but "Manic-depression" is a form of depression [/sarcasm]
So then, if lithium is an "anti-manic depressive drug", it's used to treat manic-depressive patients. Clinical depression isn't just about being miserable, it is things like the mood swings your book mentions, so yes, lithium is used to treat forms of depression.
Oh and sorry for the sarcasm, i'm just messin with ya :p

I took several psychopharmacology classes in college. Psychopharmacology is the study of psychoactive substances (particularly pharmaceuticals) and their effects on the brain.
Lithium is a mood stabilizer, not a pure antidepressant. While it may have antidepressant properties, it's primarily used in bipolar disorder (formerly called manic-depressive disorder or manic depression) to control the manic phase once it has begun and to prevent both the manic and depressive phases from occurring. Lithium is an ideal mood stabilizer for individuals with bipolar disorder because it helps to control their depression without throwing them into mania. Individuals with bipolar disorder often find themselves in the midst of a manic phase when they take traditional SSRI or tricyclic antidepressants. Lithium is primarily used to control mania, not depression, in bipolar disorder. Therefore, lithium is unlikely to be used by an individual with unipolar depression. Rather, it is more than likely only prescribed to individuals with bipolar disorder.
By the way, bipolar disorder is not a "type of depression"; it is a totally separate disorder with different brain disease processes. However, bipolar disorder and depression do both fall under the larger umbrella of "mood disorders."

I don't think that Lithium means the manis-depressive patients' drug in this case. Amy doesn't probably even knbow Lithium is used for that. I think Amy used the word Lithium because it's a light, silvery metal.
Metal is usually heavy and it can be a metaphor of troubles etc. This is the lighter and less heavy side of the trouble. Sometimes it's a little bit pretty and light to be a little sad and somehow you want to keep that feeling. And I think that's what Amy means and it has nothing to do with bipolar (Ben has that disorder but this song is about Shaun, not about Ben).

Referring to what SunriseDream said, I'm not sure I'd describe Lithium (the metal) as light and pretty... it has a nice tendancy to blow up or burn through anything it touches. I see what you're getting at and you're certainly entitled to your own interpretation of the song but i just think what you described is a bit of a tenuous metaphor. The lyrics of the chorus make sense to me when you take it to mean the use of lithium as a drug. Anyway that's just my opinion and as i said you're entitled to yours.

I'm keen to hear this song, especially a bipolar who knows what it's like to take medication and in some sence you love it for saving you but in the other you hate it because you don't want to lose the sad feeling that you live with, and that you've grown to love. it's most likely not even written about that, but that's my personal interpretation. by the sounds of the reviews it sounds great
I have a feeling this song will be a personal fav and very modivational for me :]

Okay, honestly I've never even SEEN lithium. I only know it's some kind of metal. I just referred it what Amy had said about this song (that it's the light side of the trouble, that lithium is definitely a metaphor) and about the part of lyrics "I wanna stay in love with my sorrow"
I should maybe have searched for a little bit info about lithium before writing.

and if amy was like me she got curious about its other uses and found out about the emotional aspect to it.

I believe this song was literally meant to be about the drug lithium, used to treat bipolar disorder. It narrows the expansiveness of mood that bipolars often feel, and thus they feel less, and less like themselves (e.g. "don't wanna lock me up inside" and "don't wanna forget how it feels / without lithium"). I don't know who this song is about for sure, if it's about anybody, but I seriously doubt (unless Amy has said otherwise) that it's about Shaun. I'll reserve my reasons for believing this to myself.
Just my .02.

Yeah, Amy said at the London Preview that the inspiration came from Shaun. I think it's quite clear really...
"Just didn't drink enough to say you love me"
And from CMWYS we all know he had alcohol issues. A great thing about the song, you can think of it on many levels.
This is definately a highlight for me on the album. With every listen it grows on me. I love the use of strings, and Amy's voice in the verses.

Someone asked her what her inspiration was for the song at the London performance recently and she said Shaun.
...so scratch one more off your list of Ben Moody dedications. ;)

Amy doesn't probably even knbow Lithium is used for that. I think Amy used the word Lithium because it's a light, silvery metal.

I took "lithium" in this song as being the highly reactive, corrisive metal.
But, like Amy said the song was a metaphor, and I think the metaphor is that Shaun is the "lithium".
Very reactive, like you never knew what he would do next, espeically while drinking or whatever. He became to much to handle, and so you have "Call Me When You're Sober".
Just my opinion.
Kind of brief, but I think you can understand my point.

At first I misunderstood your point to be this:
That Shaun was the lithium because it's what made her feel happy but it wasn't .."real" for a lack of better word. He was a drug creating a false sense of happiness. I don't think I'm explaining this very well, haha. Anyway I understand how you saw it now too, which also kinda makes sense I guess. I wonder if we're over-analyzing :p Must be somewhat humorous watching us all try to figure it out when we probably won't ever know the exact details for sure.

It very well could have something to do with Shaun, but that's not necessarily the first thing I thought when I heard the song. Honestly, I just hear it as a strong metaphor for anti-depressants...you know, trying to move on without that sort of thing.

Love the piano and the gitars. Love the vocals how it goes from a seaky voice to a rebel:p
Love the hight parts as well as the low ones:D
The lyrics is very powerful too;)
Lithium I mix it with Helium sometimes :p

You are. :-) I was interested by what you and BuckeyeJosh8706 wrote... when I hear this song, I can hear two meanings: the first one is the metaphorical one that the two of you have written out... which is pretty amazing. :) The second one could be literal... earlier on in the thread, people have posted that lithium can be used as an anti-depressant... and the lyrics are pretty obvious: "don't wanna forget how it feels without lithium... i wanna stay in love with my sorrow / but God, I wanna let it go...."
Such a powerful song... and it's beautiful! I can't wait to see the video... **drool** I'm just afraid that when it's released on the radio, people will compare it to My Immortal and then judge Ev off of those two songs... -.-#

this is my tie-favourite with Lacrymosa, though this one touches me more, so I guess if I had to pick one, it'd be this. I was hoping it'd be the second single, and I'm sooo psyched Amy made the right choice, I love her soo much now. What's odd is, listening to the album over and over now, I'm discovering I love it more than I thought I did.

My favorite part of the song was "I can't hold onto me, wonder whats wrong with me"
its also kinda sounds like CMWYS when she sings "Cant keep beleive were only deceiveing.."
What im finding strange is "Lithium" on the VH1 interview with amy were she explains the songs, the lyrics shown are:
"Don't want to forget the fear of lithium." That lyric is not on the leak.
Maybe its a demo or something. No idea.

I don't think it was her who was saying the lyrics, only what the songs meant. The lyrics were more than likely written by the author of the article. There was also an error in the Cloud Nine lyrics that were quoted as well.

I was the person at the London performance who asked Amy about what inspired her to write Lithium and what the song is about and she answered "are there any seether fans in the room" then she said "well its about Shaun Morgan" and she said that "Lithium is about feeling really down and then becoming happy but not wanting to give up the sorrow because I didn't feel myself without it"
I hope that clears things up a bit and I have no idea if Amy was going on about the drug or the metal or both but I would put my bets on the drug.
p.s. for the people at the show the Kerrang guy called me the crazy guy at the back because I was jumping up and down to get them to pick me and when he asked what my name was and where I was from I was so nervous i got confused but (just about) managed to say James from London then I asked the question and finished by saying thanks and the album rocks.

I love everything about it...the vocals are just...wow. I just heard it today and I basically jumped up and down screaming when it was over because...well that's just how I am after I hear new ev songs :)
I reckon a lot of the Demo's probably have different lyrics, or different version of the lyrics.
I was thinking, if Amy wrote this a while ago (she said in an interview she wrote it ages ago like pre fallen i think) maybe the whole Bi polar/Ben thing was true. But then thinking about Shaun, she wrote the rest of the song.

I heard Lithium through the VH1 performance, and my God it's amazing. The melody sounds strangly familar, I think I've heard it before, or I could be crazy? So far my favorite parts are:
come to bed, don't make me sleep alone
couldn't hide the emptiness you let it show
never wanted it to be so cold
just didn't drink enough to say you love me
Darling, I forgive you after all
anything is better than to be alone
and in the end I guess I had to fall
always find my place among the ashes
Did anybody think of Exodus when they listened to this. I know it's entirely different subject matter but they part where is says:
here in the darkness I know myself
can't break free until I let it go
Then in Exodus it says something about "Here in the shadows, I'm safe, I'm free"
They just kind of reminded me of eachother.

after watching and listening to the Unplugged performance, I have since fallen even more in love with this song. At first it was just one i would listen to and sing along to and yeah it would be ok. Ok, so I'm sure this has been pointed out time and time again but I don't have the time/patience to sift through all of these responses. So, since I am entitled to my opinion on the song, even if it is the same as other's, here goes :D
First of all, I don't think many people know I'm bipolar. I almost gave in to the battle with the disorder this summer and was hospitalized for a week. Being bipolar not only causes a great deal of internal suffering, but suffering to those that love me and have to helplessly watch me fade in and out depending on the day.
When I heard Lithium, I was blown away. For those of you that don't know it, although like I said I'm sure it's been mentioned, lithium is a drug most commonly used to treat bipolar disorder. I was blown away by the fact that someone could relate to how it felt to be suffocated beneath such darkness in a way commonly unfathomable to the masses.
I had for quite a while thought that Amy was maybe becoming a diva; that she was wrapped up in the world of stardom and that she wouldn't be coming back, that she wouldn't remember what it was like to be a normal person. But this song also reminded me that she's absolutely a person and she suffers just as much as the rest of us. Sure, she probably makes more money than the rest of us, is talented in ways we can't really imagine, but she makes a lot of sacrifices as well and this song proves that she can feel just like any of the rest of us can.
In closing, maybe that was too personal, but I just needed to say that I'm unbelievably grateful that this song was written and I absolutely love it.
I have been brought back to the discipleship that is Evanescence. Forgive me for straying from the pack. :P

Lithium's melody is much different than any of the other songs on this album. Although it has no "hook," like none of the others do either, it has a better (melodic) progression.
It's melancholy and dark, yet at the same time it has a slightly universal appeal. If "Good Enough" is not the next single, "Lithium" most definitely will be.

I can picture this song being VERY popular. I just hope it's not way over-played, like My Immortal. IMO, it doesn't really sound like a "My Immortal"-like song.
The music is definitely different than what I expected, which is great. I can't stop listening to it. I'm addicted. I actually can't picture a video, and I'm really eager to hear what it's going to be about!

This is my faveorite Evanescence song from all the albums.
It has such raw, pure beauty.
I can, like many others, relate to it.
This line keeps swirling around my mind after I've played it.
"Come to bed, don't make me sleep alone.
Couldn't hide the emptiness, you let it show."
Reminds me of my all of my exs (2) who I had a serious relationship with, who dumped me and how much it hurt!

I think this is my second-favorite song on the album, behind Your Star (which I <333 so much that it isn't even funny lol).
I think it's so refreshing to have a track devoid of strange vocal effects. Here, it seems like Amy's full vocal potential can really show itself without being masked by some effect.
Anyway, all that aside, I just...love the song. The piano is amazing, and then the band just slams in and changes the color of the song completely...but at the same time, it doesn't lose the original feeling. And it took me a few listens to pick out the acoustic guitar, but I LOVE that. Acoustic guitar ftw. \m/ I like how the last chorus is higher and more powerful; it's quite a build-up.
I'm really glad that this is the second single. It's really a shining star on the album, IMO.

I can relate to every line so much that it's almost like it was something I would write if I were like 10x better at songwriting! I've been there with the mood-altering drugs and all and might have to go back, so... yeah. And:
Just didn't drink enough to say you love me
That line made me cry. Reminds me so much of my dad.
I also love the way it's sung and the beginning (but God...) gives me the chills, it's so amazing. And it's fairly low in parts but I can sing it anyway! So I'm thinking of maybe singing this at a concert for school... any chance someone knows where I can get sheet music??

No connection to Nivana I don't think...maybe the idea cause the concept in the Nirvana song is similar at some points...
But the main reason it's called Lithium is because lithium is a key ingredient to curing depression (http://community.netdoktor.com/ccs/uk/depression/coping/treating/article.jsp?articleIdent=uk.depression.coping.trea ting.uk_depression_article_2061). She said in an interview once that she believed anti-depressants took away the soul (or something to that effect). So the rest is self-explainitary, she doesn't want to give in, she /wants/ to feel her sorrow sometimes.

Alright, this is the first post i've had in this thread, but i must say. Lithium is still not my fav song. i still think it's a race between Sweet Sacrifice, Lacrymosa, and Good Enough for me. But it's Right up there, and speeding past a few. It's just so Hard to find a favorite on this album, because there is Not a Single Song I Don't Love! Haa haa..this WHOLE album is Amazing!!! All the songs are so good, and they all relate to me in some way, which is awesome. It's weird... But needless to say, i just wanted to state that this is an Amazing song, and i'm really happy it's the second single. :D
So, does anyone know what the Video is gonna be like?! Honestly, i hope it isn't all Amy all the time. i know it probably will be because it's her song, and all that jazz, and that isn't a Bad thing AT ALL...i would just like to see the rest of the Guys get some video time too, ya know?! I don't know...maybe to show people the Band Evanescence is more than just Amy Lee. Bear in mind that a lot of us don't use iTunes...so this is giving people a chance to hear it who haven't had access to it. Also bear in mind that there will probably be two more singles, so there's a definite potential to release two, if not all three, of the unheard B-sides there.
Personally, I think it's pretty cool that they're including one of the acoustic versions of Lithium, because it's a really awesome thing to hear a song done differently like that...as well as All That I'm Living For. They're almost completely different songs when played acoustic, so it's cool that they included them, too.
It looks to me that they made sure to put three really good extras on the single...TLSIWOY, acoustic ATILF, and acoustic video of Lithium. Those fans who aren't on one of the big message board networks, where we get all these files and videos and such, will probably wet themselves when they hear them lol. ;)

Yeah, I have Itunes but I don't buy from it, so this will give me a chance to hear TLSIWOY.
I'd really love to hear Lithium and ATILF acoustic.

Cool. I'll have to pick that up somewhere, as I don't have itunes and have never heard TLSIWOY. (crap, that's long even as an acronym!)

Musically, this song seems like part Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb, part Guns N' Roses - November Rain, part Staind - Home/Right Here, and part My Immortal/Hello.

I've been thinking about this song a lot as I watched the video. It's strange. Of all the songs on the album this I can relate to the most. The lyrics 'I wanna stay in love with my sorrow, but god I wanna let it go'' and 'darling I forgive you after all, anything is better then to be alone' really sum me up well. But it really is one of my least favorite songs on the album and I can't figure out why.

Thanks. I'll be working on a few other things from the vid as time allows.
This has become one of my favorite songs on the cd. I think because now it hits fairly close to home with a few things that have been happening lately.

yeah I remember that. And yeah, it does kinda remind ya of that. Maybe it's the play offa TNES. The sadness is under the water, the happiness is above. And in the end, she fights off the sadness and leaves it in the water and walks off.
