After a couple of years, the most hyped Olympic bid in recent memory is over.

London will host the 2012 Olympic Games. London was considered one of the two favorites.

It came down to five of the biggest cities in the world: London, Paris, New York, Moscow and Madrid.

Congratulations London for winning the 2012 Olympics...I think the thing that may have clinched it for London was the way they handled Live 8's event.

Yeah, I'm actually really happy it's in London. It seemed like the most suitable place for the 2012 Olympics. :)

All I can say is

WOOHOO!!!

no one in NYC actually wanted the Olympics here. Only the mayor apparently, who would not actually be living IN the city 7 years from now. Such a relief. There is no room here for an Olympics, and I am glad the IOC realized that!

I am so glad that London got it and not Paris... London can pull this off with style and elegance where as some people in France would have used this as an avenue to protest.

I thought Paris was gonna win it, got quite a surprise hearing the result. I found it quite funny how Singapore got the chance to pimp ourselves to the world with the video clip just before the announcement of the results. :p

Doesn't everyone use everything as a way to protest?

No different that it is in France or London...the protestors go where the event is. they come from all over the world...to wherever they need to go.

but yeah, glad it is in London. This is the 3rd time in a row Paris' bid has been rejected.

So it's..

2006 - Torino, Italy (Winter)
2008 - Beijing, China (Summer)
2010 - Vancouver, Canada (Winter)
2012 - London, England (Summer)

Seems like a pretty cool lineup to me.. ;)

Yeh, I wonder if you'll still have to pay £5 everytime you go in and out of London, and there is NO WAY that fans will be able to get in on time unless they leave early. Or walk there, walking to Wembley or wherever will be a lot faster.

That news rocks. Although I can't begin to imagine how busy London will be, judging just by it's current state.
But either way, yay

Imagine 5 mile traffic jams.

Then imagine it in 2012 with the Olympics :p

Seriously, London is one big traffic jam. Traffic jams lead to traffic jams. And one day in London is equal to smoking 5 cigarettes in a day.

The games are going to be held in East London so *at the moment* there is no congestion charge in that area. The only way you'd have to pay is if you travelled via central london to get there.

Heh, well it's certainly going to be interesting dealing with all the disruption for transport.

I remember when the first parts of the bid were being brought together and they were looking at the existing facilities and whether they'd use them or not. I think they might be using one of the sports centres nearby as a training centre although it's been a while since I've kept up with this stuff.

Oh, wow! I heard about this earlier, but this is great!

A chance to sort out the absurd traffic problems London has!

But I LOVE the Olympics, and I think London will be a cool place to have them. London is an awesome city, I've not really seen much of it though, I've been to central London once in my life, I think.

There were some military officers in the elevator with me today, saying that London shouldn't have gotten it because the food is terrible. They said it's very bland. I'd starve over there, so i guess I won't be going. :)

common misconception. london is huge and multi-cultural, therefore will have restaurants with foods from all over the world. and anyways, whats wrong with chips?

im glad its in london, the city will get a revamp, and hopefully a few of my friends will be taking part in the British Team, so i can go down and cheer them on, if im still on this island in 2012.

one of the guys on the elevator did say "what is it, all fish and chips?"

There's not anything on earth i love more than fish. Fish happens to be my favorite food and if chips is french fries, then that's my second favorite food! i find it hard to believe that an entire city can screw up fish. I guess i'd have to make sure the restaurant puts enough seasoning in it when i order it. :) Now I'm hungry again...

You don't get fish and chips from a restaurant  y'get them from a chip shop, without seasoning, and not french fries either, proper chippie chips, fat ones :p only posh people have fish and chips in a restaurant, hahaha!!

Broken_toy is right. London is one of the most multi-cultured cities in the world. There are so many different kinds of international restaurants its unbelieveable.

People won't starve over here. I'm willing to bet a lot of misconceptions about the UK are about to come undone at the 2012 Olympics (thank god)...

I have a strong feeling that if London does sort out its horrendous traffic issues, they'll only be successful for the duration of the Olympics. Sydney's traffic during the 2000 Games was extremely well-managed, with good traffic flow and little congestion. What happened after the Games? All of the policies implemented were reversed and quickly returned to normal
