View Full Version : McAfee stole my fonts!!

Well, that's what I think has happened!

A few days ago I kept getting a virus scan alert saying I had "exlpoit-mydoom" on the comp. I managed to get of it, but I was worried the actual mydoom virus/trojan (whatever it is) was on the comp, so I ran the Symantec removal tool for it.

Now, when I did that I turned the XP system restore off. And after that I ran a full virus scan with McAfee, when that finished (both found no virus on the computer), I decided a nice little clean up of the comp was in order.

But, I forgot to turn the system restore back on. I shut the computer down... a few hours later my mum turn the comp on to find that there was no longer english/fonts on the computer, everything was in hieroglyphic font... (thanks to Emma and Diamon, I found out the font is actually, "Merlett").

Anyway, this whole time I've thought this was caused by a virus, but I've run three different virus scans and none of them have found a virus.

I searched the McAfee help forums, and it now looks like QuickClean Lite (which I used earlier to clean up crap on the comp) deleted some reg file to do with the fonts...

The thing is... I can't go back and do a system restore because I forgot to turn it back on. Or maybe I can? I was going to post on the McAfee help site, but replies are a little slow and I don't understand a lot of what they are saying because I'm not a computer geek!

If someone could have a look at the link to the McAfee site and maybe help me out a little, I'd appreciate it, muchly.

Though, I guess I should mention that we don't have a legit copy of XP Pro, so if I have to reinstall windows I'm going to die.

I've copied the font files over from our other computer (win98), but when I reboot the font files are gone again.

*cries*

If ya wanna see what my comp looks like at the moment...

Open start, go to control panel, open regional and language options, check around there and mess with stuff, if you live under united states make sure it says united states for location. make sure its english for your format. click on the languages tab, click details, make sure that is in english too. click on advance you get the idea, make that english too. After the instructions are completed, restart your computer. If that doesnt work, REFORMAT.

Wow. That's a pretty nasty mess. I can't tell you how to fix it, but after you do, I'd strongly recommend a different form of virus protection. In my opinion and in my experience, McAfee is quite frankly a terrible program that seems to only complicate and make a mess of computers.

Everything on the computer is working as it should be. I had a look around on the McAfee help forums and it looks like this has been happening to other people using XP. http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=35363

Thing is, I have no idea what all that means, and now I have to work out how to fix it with the suggestions on that site. :|

Are there any anti-virus programs you could recommend?

Norton anti-virus. Either that or just dont download any files that looks suspsicous, be cautious of gamesites, some of them contain spywares and adawares, dont download explicit stuff, cracks, or hacks. GOOD LUCK. And turn off your cookies in IE and delete them.
