Does singing count (since the voice is an instrument and all..LOL)
We'll I've been singing for about 15 years (longer if you count when I was little dancing around my living room...) I was in a band for a little bit, but then they broke up. It was a hell of a lot of fun while it lasted though. Now I just sing on my own :)
I'm also attempting to learn acoustic guitar. Attempting being the key word

acoustic is harder than electric..because the electric guitar is more "forgiving" ..so if you're attempting to try to play guitar ..i'd attempt the electric... ;)

well i use to have a keyboard (yes i know pathetic) but i found it hard to play and i only could play twinkle twinkle little star so i just returned it and got my money back. This cristmas i'm getting an electric guitar :D
i play the piano...have don since i was six (so thats like 10 years). i got up to grade 6 but to get to grade 7 (officially) i had to do theory and i didn't really want to, and i couldn't find someone to teach me! of course after i'd done my GCSE's i found out that a GCSE in music would have been good enough...if i'd taken music (and i really wish i had!)
guess it doesn't really matter. i mean whats a qualification if can't even play! i don't need it!
but anyway, im also learning how to play the guitar (since last year)! which is something i've wanted to do for a long time! no grades though!
i also wanted to play the clarenet but i can't aford to buy one of those too! i just bought a brand new piano board (yamaha, very kool, silver...cost a lot!) and i want an electric guitar!

Not entirely true! that may just be personal thing but my subjective view is that electric is easy and better to learn on. why? 1. The body is smaller, makin it more comfortable to play.
2.The neck with is narrower, makin playin more comfortable for beginners.
3.It is easier to keep interest with an electric:you are able to change sounds and tones easier providing variety and also the ability to play along with you fae artists and try n recreate the sounds, evanescence or metallica wit an acoustic?....
4.It looks cooler-keeps interesr up.
5. when you say "more forgiving" do you mean by way of effects? obviously but if you are learnin on acoustic and your mistakes are more clear it can be disheartening and discouraging. yeah voice counts. anyone played to quite a fair sized crowd? how big? great fun eh?

There is an older thread about this here (http://evboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=3950&).
Yeah, I saw that too, but oh well. ToB said that if its not on the first 3 pages he doesnt care if there is a new one. Your thread is, I believe, on the forty-something page.
Anyway, I have played guitar for a year. I started out on electric but recently bought an acoustic. I found that alot of the songs that I wanted to play are acoustic and it is nice not having to drag an amp around to play with friends. Even though I have only played for a year, I like playing Metallica (Master of Puppets!), Creed, classical and Flamenco, Beatles, Megadeth, Paul Gilbert, Cold, Ev, Kansas, Boston, Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc. I like to say that I have eclectic tastes. I have also tabbed two Evanescence songs, October and Field of Innocence, although I havent posted them.
My musical interest include anything non-rap you can think of. Right now I am really into Satriani, Vai, old Metallica, Cold, Ev, Mason Williams, Audioslave, Boston, Beatles, Chicago, Kansas, Maynard Furgeson, any big band jazz.
I have a Yamaha G100-112, an Alvarez Fusion acoustic-electric, and a cheap-ass Fender knock-off that I would really like to replace. Anyone have a decent guitar they want to sell?

Guitar - 17 years. I can also play a little keyboards. Enough at least to come up with melody ideas.
I also sequence a lot of music on the computer and have been doing that for about 6 years. I especially enjoy doing orchestral/film styles and a lot of electronic stuff like industrial, techno and so on.

i played the flute for about a year and was horrible so i quit the flute as well
this year i took up guitar and i kinda suck at that too, but i try really hard! :D I am determained not to quit this!
I have been singing since i could talk though, i always had the biggest singing roles in local musicals and such, but im really shy about singing now that i am older, i have no idea why :)

I am a singer/ lyricist. I am working on various projects which may or may not see the light of day.
One of them is a CD by a Horrorcore underground rapper by the name of KreepyX that is due out in Spring of 2004.
*shamelessly plugs away*
This will feature songs with gothic and freaky subject matters and hooks that are rather unexpected on a Rap album.
Ethereal choruses supplied by yours truly on at least 2 of the tracks(as of now) add a whole different feel.
Look for established artists such as Otep, Slipknot, Swollen Members, and Kotton Mouth Kings to also appear on this project.
I am in awe that my vocals are on the same CD as these bands!!
This whole thing has been a wonderful opportunity and will hopefully open a few doors for me.
At any rate it has been key in fueling the desire even more to get my voice out there.
Something is also in the works with our fellow Evboarder DMW as well.
He has written a song and has generously asked me to do the female vocals. He is an awesome talent!!
I am very excited about this as well. :D
This one won't be done for awhile as it is still in the early planning stages.
Keep your ears and your minds opened, lol.
Great things are headed your way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guitar player here<--------
I've got a Cali Fat Strat, Epiphone Acoustic, and a guitar that I'm currently building. It started out as a fat strat copy, but I changed the bridge pick-up to a Dimarzio Tone Zone. I finally have the Eddie Van Halen tone. Now I just have to get a Floyd Rose trem for it.
I use a Marshall @ home, but I have no amp right now...playing through a pedal and headphones. I've got a vox wah, and Classic metal pedal. I would love a peavey triple xxxamp, or any all tube amp.
I've been told I'm good, but I don't think I am. I've got a LONG way to go till I get to where I'm comfortable with my skill level. Been playing about 6 yrs, but I haven't been playing as often as I want to. Unlike Petrucchic, I don't get to go to the greatest music school ever, because I can't read music.*cries* I would love to go to Berkely...
My influences are definetely Van Halen...about 75% of my sound is VH. Then I've been told I sound like a mix of VH, Ozzy's guitarists( all three...that was weird), Thrice, and Creed. Basically, I use a lot of drop d, so that explains the Creed thing. Most of the time my rythms are mixtures of Thrice(iron maiden like punk) and Creed power chords, with some Wylde pings everywhere. Leads are all VH. I have a very unique style for Hawaii. No one listens to any of the music I do.80's rock, Thrice, and Ev, AFI, and A Perfect Circle. People think I'm sooo original... if they only knew... ;)

You don't need to read to be a great guitarist...some of the best guitarists can't read a bar of music. But I guess it helps if you want to go to Berkely.

Well I play in two bands, one of melodic metal (Helloween, Stratovarius etc...) called DarkStalker and one of gothic metal (Within Temptation, After Forever etc) called Cinders of Fall... e play bass and I do the extreme vocals on both bands, but I also play guitar and keyboard when I (try to) compose. I want to learn how to play drums some day...
My influences are the traditional heavy metal bands like Maiden, Metallica (old stuff) and Sabbath (with Ozzy and Dio)...
Of course I add Evan in my list of influences... well, when the website of one of my bands is ready, i post the address here...

I had originally posted in the other thread mentioned earlier.. but, figured I would go ahead and reply here too.
I've played guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, and some drums for over 20 years. Guitar is my primary instrument, but, I actually started out taking piano lessons for a couple years, then switched to guitar. I also try to sing (I'm my own worst critic on everything.. but especially my voice.)
My influences include just about everyone, but among my favorites are Gary Moore, Satriana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Paul Gilbert, John Petrucci, Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, Eddie Van Halen, John Sykes(Whitesnake, Blue Murder) and several guitar tandems such as Degarmo/Wilton (Queensryche), Tipton/Downing(Judas Priest), Murray/Smith(Maiden), and Hetfield/Hammet(Metallica).
I currently have 5 guitars, (Washburn 6 string electric, Peavey G-Series 6 string electric, A cheap offbrand Gibson Explorer copy electric that a friend gave me, a Yamaha 12 string acoustic, and an Ovation 6 string acoustic). I recently sold my practice amp, a Crate 212, in favor of keeping my Marshall half stack (100 watt JCM900 head and 4x12Celestion cabinet).
Music is my passion, and my outlet, although currently I am not playing in a band. I still play at least 3 or 4 times a week.

Thrice is amazing, and I use Zakk Wylde pings too. I use a lot of different tunings, but I use drop d and standard the most. I do really like the guitarist from Dokken too. George Lynch. HE is very unique. Approaches a song from a whole different angle. You should check him out! :D

I've sung since I was little, played guitar for 4 years (not counting when I learned the intro to "come as you are" in 5th grade). I've been playing solo shows since 2002, played with my band (now broken up) a few times before then and a few shows here and there with other people.
my site is http://www.forrestrose.com/, I have some songs and clips there.
I play with an esp ltd that I don't know anything about (pictured here (http://www.forrestrose.com/photos/pub8183.jpg)) and a marshall valvestate (you know, when it decides to work).
I've played other instruments in school, but nothing I stuck with or really liked a whole lot.

I've played guitar for 17 years...almost 18 now actually. I played in a few different garage bands along the way, but never really got too serious with it all. I've played everything from classical to death metal. I think I enjoy the death metal stuff the most. Nice way to work out any frustration :D

There's this thread that can be kinda similar. (http://www.evboard.com/showthread.php?t=4032)
Anyway, I have played piano for about 13 years, and I keep playing it at home just to chill out and have fun.
I've learnt to play guitar but I.. suck. I'd have to practice more.
And I'm learning to play the flute because it has been always one of my favorites instruments.
Next year, I hope I can learn to play violin, I love it too.
But as I said, I only do it to have fun.
However, I'd like to play piano/keys in a band :p

I just started guitar literally a week ago. So far I'm having a lot of fun with it, tho it is challenging like any other instrument. I thought it looked like a fun instrument to learn which is why I started, and my reason for playing it is to just have something to do during my random free time and stuff...

yep, you can write music in sibelius music software or finale music software. theres a million other music notation programmes out there, but those two are the best.
the bad news is that they both cost a shit load to buy so you would either have to download a copy off of kazaa or any other good file sharing system, or see if anyone has a copy that they could put on your computer for you.
the demo version of sibelius is free but is only free for 5 days then you cant save anything, grrrr.

I've been a piano player off and on for years, but I've been a hardcore guitarist since I was 16. I started with a bass guitar and learned some 6-string electric stuff at the same time. Now, I play just about every kind of guitar, including acoustic, 7-string, baritone, and good old 6-string guitars. I learned part of my theory from piano lessons, and took some bass lessons which taught me how to learn scales on a fretted instrument, but I taught myself everything else guitar-related.

It's gonna be the third year that I play the violin (whoohoo!), I've wanted to play since i was 5, 'cause someone's mom in my class came and played the violin for us and i just fell in love with it!!
Playing the violin is great, I can play Hello, My Immortal, with the piano, and i think it sounds great.
But I really would like to learn the piano or guitar. Not because everyone says '' you can only do classical music on the violin'' ( which is not true at all, look at yellowcard, they have a violin player and they do rock! And i can still play ev songs on it!), but because those are very beautiful instruments and i dont want to play JUST the violin.

Hey, nice thread!
I'm a first-rank oboe player. I've been player for almost 4 years. Oboe is such a misunderstood instrument :( . No one plays it in my whole school, but me. But, I taught myself to change piano and guitar sheetmusic into music I can play. So, I can play My Immortal, Everybody's Fool, and Breathe No More. I can play Bring Me To Life too, but it doesn't sound very good. Oh, and I taught myself to play Thoughtless without music, and it actually sounds right!
And I've been singing since I was 5, but I was in a traveling city-wide choir when I was 8, and in a small ensemble when I was 10. There's not much in Middle School for choir, because I play my instrument mostly, but in High School there's lots of different choirs that I can do as well as concert orchestra.

Alto is longer, and heavier. It's also in a different pitch, which is G. Normal flutes are usually in C. The sound isn't as high as C flute, and it takes a lot more air to fill up an alto for good tone, and even more on bass. It's a bit harder to play, too. You usually don't play notes above the staff, since it's quite hard to get good tone and such cos it takes a lot of air.

cool thanks for the info, sounds complicated. i know that flutes go really high above the staff. i can imagine that the alto has a lot more of a warmer tone of it doesnt go above the staff.

My mom and I are going to American Music sometime this week to get me one, and I want a good one this time!(we're renting to own) and I have a cheap JC Penney one right now....which is so crappy, two of the pieces barely fit together anymore, the tail end falls off a lot, which is why you NEVER buy flutes from JC Penney.....
thanks

EDIT: die. piccolo. die.

I play guitar and piano mainly. I can play the trumpet as I used to be in the school brass band. I'd love to be able to play the bagpipes (*gasp* a Scotsman who doesn't play the pipes) but I've never had the chance. If you call singing an instrument then that too I suppose.

Well,i play electric and acroustic guitar, and i also play the piano. Im not sure how long for the guitars but when i was in 1st-3rd grade i took piano lessons. Then i quit but my friend Stephanie got me back into it and taught me more. She can play like really well,i call her Beetoven(sp? its the dude who like played real good and everything lol).Im also a singer as well. Where i hope to get with it? well sometimes me and Stephanie will get together and play piano, guitars and sing. We dont really call ourselves a "band" but i hope one day to get somewhere with it.
Lol. Piccolos aren't really...my preference. I like to keep space between them. Very shril, high pitched things.

Try Gemeinhardt, which is really good. My flute now is a Gemeinhardt; they're of a very good quality and they hold up well. I've had mine since fifth grade....But they can be kind of expensive; my parents got mine through the school. Other than that, Yamaha is good, and some of my teacher's flutes are really good Japanese brands, like Muramatsu and Nagahara. It really depends on price though, although you could probably get a highish quality Gemeinhardt or a Yamaha for a good price.

Yesterday we went to 'Viena', a fast food place and there was a piano... we asked to the waiter if we could play it and there I went!
I was so nervous but I played My Immortal and a part of Breathe No More. haha, everyone in there clapped. *blushes* I'm still excited because I left piano for this, I'm too shy to play with a lot of people listening :o

And yes, feeling nervous is something absolutely normal.......
Only time can help you go through it....or alcohol :D
lol
First time I played guitar in front of dozen people I was like......"goddamn, why am I shaking??? It's not the first time I'm playing!" ahah

And, of course it's way harder (for me) to be alone in front of persons, playing, than being with your band :p
With your band, you can go near your drummer, and make fun of him

A big awkward bottle with a funky nipple. but latter i mastered a knife & fork. that i like to use right about now. doesn`t hold much of a tune but it goes down ok.
I don't actually play an instrument, but I would love to play the drums, violin, piano, bodrahn, and tin whistle. ;)

its never to late to start learning an instrument. i hope you eventually get to try it out. xx
ok. tin whistle I would not recommend, it's probably as shrill and deadly as the frigging piccolo....
good luck with learning something, go for it. it's fun.

I've been a vocalist for... 13 years... I used to sing in public choirs and such. But that all stopped when my family moved to a city in the middle of nowhere. I was able to join choir again in middle school but that drove me nuts since altos refused to sing their part and it was just a mess. Either way I've been practicing on my own since then. As far as instruments... I've been trying to learn guitar but ALL I can play is Sunshine Of Your Love and a feww sublime songs... damn the hammer-on and pull-off thing. Well no... I do fairly well at that. I just get excited and forget to keep playing after I do it right. I'll get it eventually. My brother's been teaching me theory for... forever... it's just odd knowing theory but not knowing how to play an instrument. He plays the alto saxophone. He's been playing that for... since he was 7 so... 9 years... then he plays the barritone, tenor, and bass saxophone. He wants a surprano but that won't happen any time soon. Aside from that there's the trumpet, french horn, flugal horn, clarinet, and he is learning drumset. Who knows but I'm happy since he's promissed to teach me alto sax. I'm proud of him too since he gets to go to the berkley school of music. His piano needs work though... that's the only reason Juliard wouldn't give him a full ride but oh well.

My instructor said that the best type of flute to buy would be a Demidici, which is a Jupiter. Though really it depends on how you play. You don't like piccolos!? I love them, I want one sooooo bad, but that is because I am in marching band and really there is no point in playing a flute in marching band as it can't be heard. And I didn't even know you could buy a flute from JC Penny...well I hope you get a good flute!! :)
Oh, stupid question, what is a tin whistle exactly?? I think I know but I could be wrong...

When I was in third grade I played the recorder, I was pretty good at it. And then in fourth I played the clarinet. That thing had the worst sound.... I hated it.
But then just last year, I picked up a guitar and fell in love with it.
So guitar is now my instrument. I just got an electric for christmas. But I've always thought about playing drums...
^^^I remember playing recorder in primary school too. Did all kids play that blasted thing? I hated it!
My teacher used to play it and his spit would dribble down it and come out the hole at the bottom. :D

I can play piano. I used to, but not really anymore. I play guitar mostly. I've played piano since I was 10 (i think). And I've been playing guitar for about a year and a half. Music is my passion. I can't live without it. It's my stress reliever. Whenever I'm feeling some strong emotion, like I'm stressed, or like anger or something, I don't really TALK to people about it. (It's a little problem I'm working on...) But I have other ways to relieve my stress. I usually play guitar to get it out. It might be weird, but it works. :)
If I were to learn to play any instrument, I would have to spend months learning how to read music, because that is something I have never learned to do, no matter how hard I tried!
we all used to have to learn recorder.
I never got the point, I think it was just to teach us basic music reading techniques, and recorder is really easy for little kids to learn. I'd rather they'd have taught us piano, then I could maybe play two handed! but our school couldn't afford 30 keyboards per class....oh, well.

Learning to read music isn't that bad, actually. It wouldn't take months, maybe two to three weeks, four maybe. It depends. Learning to play the instrument the right way and commiting notes and fingerings to memory and such is harder, in my opinion. :)

Your school supplied recorders as in the students not having to pay for them? 'Cause I had to pay like 6 bucks to get one. And it was mandatory that we play one. If we didn't pay, we had to use the ones that were used by like 50 other people. I forgot my recorder one music class, and she tried to get me to play one of the "community" recorders. I got an F for that class that day but I didin't care.....
They should have taught us drums, yea that would've been awesome....

Ooh, it's been forever since I've played anything! I used to be kinda good at music, according to my teacher, I had an "ear" for it. I was in a music group in school until 11. We played all kinds of stuff, but they were very simple.
I got a solo performance with a flute when I was about 10 or 11 though... really complicated song. Really pretty too. Got to perform it. Ah, the stage fright!!! *shudders* The butterflies... it was cool though.
Tried the drums... didn't work! LOL! And I could play things by ear if given a piano/organ... after many attempts
But now, music sort of transcends me! And I like it that way!

I play piano or exactly keyboard though my personality is too impatient and sparking.
I was 4 when I started if I remember right.. My teacher wasn't professional and I didn't actually want to learn enough hard.
When I was 11 I finished my lessons and thought that I never play piano again.

as of three days ago, i am teaching myself to play the guitar...and i can safely say, i suck...but it's only been three days so... eh... i should definately get lessons. i've always wanted to be able to play the guitar and drums, but my parents absolutely refuse to buy me or let me buy drums.

I've always wanted to play guitar, drums and piano, but havnt really gotten the chance to do so, so I've signed myself up for a guitar course and i'm switching to drums next year. :D But the instrument that i play well with is my clarinet, because i've played it for five years now (since grade 6). Honestly..the one-instrument-only deal is driving me nuts lol And of course, I sing. ;)

Yaaaaaaaay I started 8 years ago although I've not played it properly for 3 years now. I've just started playing it again. Played for about an hour in the last 2 days.
I really need some new music though, and to practice a bit more. I forgot some of the fingering for the top octave notes from top D above since the last time I played, last September.
I've been playing Dvorak today. If I see one more "Variations on a theme by..." I'll shoot something!! Lol!!!!!!

I play piano, flute, guitar and recorder (if it counts). I've been playing:
- piano for 8 years (I quit this year. I've never been very good at piano)
- guitar for 2 years
- flute for 5 years
- recorder played for 2 years (it was with my elementary music class)
I hoped to achieve nothing when I played piano but now I hope that with my background in piano, I'll be able to understand guitar more and implement classical styles into my own music.
With flute, I hope to stay in my school's band until the very end, be able to play challenging music well and be the leader of my section.
I had no hopes with recorder. It was a big joke.
I hope to make a full length album (for my own satisfaction) with songs I've written. I've actually started and have one song recorded. I want to sell the album to people I know and then give 100% of the profits to an organization, such as World Vision, that helps children in poverty-stricken countries.

Well, since my post was lost in the crash... I play the oboe... have been for 5 years now... the BESTEST instrument EVAR!! And I, of course, do English Horn as well.. I used to play clarinet for marching band. I learned the flute for the hell of it. Played my best friends tenor sax quite a few times. And taught myself piano in elementary school. I really wanna learn bassoon, french horn, and cello. I'd also like to have real piano lessons... :D. Like what my custom title says, I'm a band nerd... always have been always will be.

I play the violin. I'm not very good at it though. The reason may be because I hate to practice.

I've been playing the violin since preschool, and the cello since third grade. I'm good at both but better at the cello cuz I play that more often.

I have been playing the piano since I was four. I absolutely adore it, but unfortunately, when I moved out, it didn't come with me. But, soon that will change and I'll have her back.
I also play guitar, drums, clarinet, bass and trombone, but not nearly as well as the piano.

I'm still learning bass, i had 8 leasons (meant to be 10 but things happen  ) and it cost me $200+ so i can't really afford it again this tearm which sucks big time cause i'm still learning the basics.

I like this thread, so i'm gonna post in it.
I play the alto sax, but I have played tenor.
I used to play the classical guitar, but I lost interest in it.
I taught myself how to play the clarinet, but I lost interest in it.
I taught myself how to play the bassoon, but I hated that instrument and it was too much pressure.
I can play the piano, slowly and somewhat decent (taught myself), but i'm going to take up lessons soon.
I also played the violin, but my teacher wouldn't let me into orchestra, so I stopped playing it.
