Well today i handed my application form for college. The course ive chose to do is a BTEC National Diploma In Music. I think i should be able to do this course fairly well being though i play guitar and i easily read music etc.. But ive been wandering what job opportunities this course will allow me to take. Like i guess i could go on and do A BA in music.. But in the end what will i be able to do with it? Its just that i have a real love for music and its what i want to do. Like i know im not really gonna be a musician cus it takes alot of luck to break.. But even if i was working in the industry id be doing something i enjoy...

Thanks in advance people
Alan

What's the difference between a BA in music and what you're doing? Good Luck with everything!

What I've found in my research on this topic is that the best job opportunity for musicians is to teach (get a degree in music education). You can still perform, but performing hardly ever makes enough money to live off of unless you make it big. That and I've never met a music teacher that hated their job.

Good luck to you. :D

Teaching would probably be your best bet in that field. You can also contact the person that runs the music department in the college and see what your options are. Also, having a BA will look alot better than an associates degree. Many places require a BA for employment. Also look at a good minor, something that may even go along with the Music degree you are after. Say marketing or economics of some sort. I don't know where music management would fit in there. And if you find you can tolerate school up to your bachelors degree, go for my masters. Sky is the limit.
I have an associates degree in graphic design. I lack one year from getting my bachelors degree. But it'll be a while to get that. For my specialty, a bachelors degree is needed. The job market requires it. And that I live move to a bigger city.

ok, I know you've kind of already decided to ask the college later, but I'm in the same boat mate, and I've taken some AMAZING classes in the music field, and there are plenty of jobs you can get that aren't strictly devoted to teaching. Depending on the school you're going to be attending, you can take classes that aren't only theory and learning your instrument. The best class I've ver taken was a class called Music MArketing. The class was taught by a guy who had been through the music business, and he was teaching stuff that only someone who had been in the industry would know about. Stuff like press kits, contract signings, copyrighting, etc. The class was basically a 'how to' class in breaking into the music business on some level. Even if it's not as a musician, depending on what classes you take, you can also go into working at a label, becoming a music journalist, music photographer, publicist, an agent, a producer, and all things devoted to the industry. If you look at a cd aknowledgement page, there;s is pretty much an entire list of things you can go into that aren't teaching. just a thought.

Whatever you study you wonder if you're going to get a job easily. Maybe you've studied to be an architect and you end up working as a shop assistant. So you never know. I think you should try this BTEC or BA if you really like it, you could work as a music teacher or be a musician (like in a orchestra, in a studio, a song-writer,...). But if you would like to be in the music industry (you know like a producer or manager) then I would recommend to study a second degree, like business administration or something related to entreprises and money. Anyway, if you study now this music degree, you can always study something else when you finish it. Maybe then you'll like another type of job and study for that. Good luck!

My advice is that you keep doing music, take this course, go to university and do it along with producing/management training or similar. Then, do a teaching course. The doors that open up for you in the music business would be wiiiiiide open.

Not only would you then be able to take a teaching job, you would get to play music pretty much all the time. It would be your job to live and breathe music. You could even teach in a university.

Do a masters in music, go on to do a Doctorate. You'd be a PHd in music then, teaching in a university and doing private lessons, that earns you a lot of money, trust me, my flute teacher did this.

Join a band for lots more experience.

If not that, then learn all about record companies, take a few jobs there, learn all the ropes, and dive into this business instead.

Good luck with everything!
