On all my boards I've added a profile field for your first name that will display in everyones posts. Is that something you all would like here or no?

It's ok, I guess... :) remembering the names will be easier that way :)

So, would they have the option to choose what name to display?

That'd be kinda cool. But like TheLady said some people dont like that idea.

if they left the field blank in their profile nothing would show up in their postbit. It would be there for those that would rather go by their first name ;)

Yeah this would be cool! I like to be called by my first name so it would be great! :)

This is a good idea for those that wish to use it. I have my reasons why i won't be using it. But those that know me well enough, will know my first name.

Plus this is now a public and free forum. So anyone can access it and get ahold of your information. it's not too hard to follow ip addresses and such. and posting your first name, well just be cautious. at least while the board gets under control.

And quite frankly, it has always annoyed me, why do some people want to be called by there name, but use a made up username anyway? Just use your name like the obviously abundantly intelligent *Dawn* (ps, why did your parents put little stars in your name? :P )

because alot of times peoples first names are the first to go on a forum, and your more than likely wasting your time even bothering to try your name on a forum that has 20k+ members ;)

In such a large forum I would never put my real name. I'd put Cerberus or something. So I don't really see the point in it, unless you want to encourage that kind of thing.

If someone truly wanted people to use their first name, they would have made it as their username. It does add a touch of intimacy with that person, but if you want to form a bond with someone here's what you do: talk to them and ask them what their real name is.

One possible suggestion is enable first names but put it on the user's profile page not in the postbits, that way if you want to see someone's name you can but you're not cluttering up ever page with yet another (mostly) useless bit of garbage. We've already got avatars, signatures, banners, user titles, status icon for the board, status icons for IM programs and gifts that we see on ever damn page. Myself all I need to know is who said it and what they said, avatars help a little to identify a person but everything else is fluff.

I reocgnize this thread is very old and I'm bumping something ridiculous, but I think more of these ideas need to be revisited. As for information cluttering the postbits, every user has the ability to control the information that shows up in the postbits in their User CP. You don't HAVE to see all those bank points, gifts, messenger icons, avatars, signature banners, etc., if you don't want to see them.

I know that several people have suggested things along these lines, as well as having a male/female buddy icon in the postbit, etc. I still think these are worth thinking about.
