Alrighty, so here's the scoop. Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is being made into a movie that I believe will be released this Christmas. Now this movie is going to be directed by Joel Schumacher who has directed such films as St Elmo's Fire, Falling Down, Flatliners, Lost Boys, Phone Booth, Tigerland, Bad Company, Batman Forever and *shudders* Batman and Robin. Now, maybe his glossy technicolour vision might actually work for this movie, here's the preview. PHANTOM (http://movies.channel.aol.com/franchise/exclusives/phantom.adp)
previews are on the actual page.

I just saw the preview at a movie and was like, "What the hell is this?" I couldn't figure it out till the end when it said the title of the movie.

The whole time I thought it was that Alexander the Great movie with Angelina Jolie in it and was wondering why they wasn't showing her. Interesting trailer..

I would think the guy in the Phantom mask and the theme song blaring throughout the trailer mighta been something of a giveaway. Maybe not

If it helps out my excuse any, I was in the front row cause every damn seat was full and I had to look up in an awkward position :p

Actually, the Phantom mask kind of gave it away and then the title was shown. As for the theme song, I had no idea what it was haha.

I'm looking forward to this. Emmy Rossum is quite the prettiful in this(and everywhere else).

I wish I coulda seen the original when Sarah Brightman was playing Chistine. :\

there are some things that work well once. i'm inclined to think that this is one of them.

i've seen a lot of phantom movies (insert shudder here) and none of them retain the same emotional roller coaster as andrew lloyd webber's interpretation of the story. sarah brightman, michael crawford ... unless these two are in the movie ... not gonna waste my time.

Gonna have to agree with ya there! Michael Crawford is one of my all time favorite vocalist(he also had a tv show and a few movies that I thought were hilarious) :D . I'm a metal head through and through but that guy has an awesome voice. When him and Sarah sang together it was just an awesome, beautiful thing. :D

I liked Phantom so much me and my sis ended up getting quite a few of Michael's solo CDs.

I don't think the movie will be as good since those two aren't in it but I'm still going to check it out......just out of curiousity. ;)

Wow, a Phantom movie on the big screen! *gottaseeitgottaseeitgottaseeit*

I don't know much about the director, but I think he did a good job with Flatliners, Lost Boys and Phone Booth. It seems that he keeps the direction with the line of what the movie's about...maybe that's why Batman and Robin was so horrid.

Hopefully that's what it is, because I will be very, very sad if someone is to ruin all the qualities I love about the Phantom (and I am to see it). :) But if done right, this movie could show qualities that a play never could.

Anyway, I just can't wait until December. *gottaseeitgottaseeitgottaseeit*

Hmmm is it just me or does the movie look like it was shot with over the top colors and then desaturated at the end? Makes you wonder if that was the intended look or if someone just went too far with the color and it was the only way to save it.

I noticed it also. If it was intentionally done, then that's a pretty cool concept. But a ton of his movies are done in over the top colors, so who knows..

I think the Phantom is sexy, in that obsessive way.

I saw it a couple years ago on Broadway, and felt so bad for him.

I'm personally biased toward the stage production. Have people in Hollywood run out of ideas so they are now left puttting broadway shows up on film (i.e. Chicago)?. I am not sure if I will see it... but ya' never know.

Well, they have the preview and as far as I know the film's already completed or close to being done, so I see NO reason for them not to release it.

Have people in Hollywood run out of ideas so they are now left puttting broadway shows up on film (i.e. Chicago)?. Well, I think Hollywood pretty much thought the musical film was dead. Then along came Moulin Rouge and studios suddenly said, "Hmm, maybe not". The came Chicago, now Phantom. Only reason Les Mis wasn't filmed is because its been done ad nauseum already (non-musically). I suspect this won't be the last. Let's just hope they never gets to Cats!

I've never actually seen this play/musical before (almost got to but the girl I was going out with broke up with me and took her sister instead) At any rate, I like some of Andrew Lloyd's work (as well as Tim Rice, but that's a different story) and oddly enough I think Schumacher mightwork well as the director. So if I can find a nice young lady to see it with, then I'm there.

im having mixed reactions about this..
see, the phantom of the opera is one of my all time favorites to see on stage..the music is by far my fav from an opera, play, whatever. it beats chicago, even.
but i just don't know if a movie can do it justice...I'm thinking, they saw how well chicago did, so why not give the phantom a try. it's like..they turned beauty and the beast and then the lion king into a musical, and now they're switching it around?
i just don't know..i'll probably see it, might wait till it's out on dvd, but im not going to get my hopes up and expect anything like chicago (the movie)

The movie is coming out December 24th, and it's based on the Broadway musical.

I am a HUGE Phantom fan; I love the music just as much as I love Ev's music, which is saying a lot. I saw the show once and I cried like a baby at the end of both acts. And I'm seriously considering seeing it again.

I can't WAIT for the movie to come out, but I really hope that it lives up to my expectations. Though, I'm trying to be realistic...they probably won't leave all the songs in it, because the majority of the show is sung.

Anyone else have an opinion on this movie? Comments? Anyone seen the show and loved it as much as I did (I sat FOURTH ROW, front and center. It was amazing.)?

OMG Katya,

I love The Phantom of the Opera. I have seen it at least 20 times. Micheal Crawford and Sarah Brightman was the best and Robert Guione (of Benson fame) playing the Phantom was the second best. I forget who was his Christine. Man I am seeing portions of hte musical as I type. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

The movie is actualy the third remake for that format. The first two were horrible. With SX of today, this has to be good. They better get a writer that keeps it exactly as it is. They will need to take it from play format to screen format and some could be lost. Let's hope not.

I love that musical. I love the entire CD as well. WOW. We will have to play it at the Official EvParty.

Omg. My mom and dad went to see TPOTO. I didn't tho. They DID bring back this book thing and the soundtrack. :) I love the soundtrack. Haven't listened to it in ages tho. I also have the piano book for it too. I don't play piano much anymore tho, now I play guitar a LOT. When I was younger, I'd always try to sing like the lady.... [/secret] :p :o
I can't sing or dance (at least I don't think so), I like playing the instruments. :) Definitely gonna buy it!!

HELL YES!!!! OMG!!!! Amy as Christine = best. Christine. Ever. *spazzout*

Ehhhh...not Shaun. I love Shaun, but I don't think he's got the voice of the Phantom. Not to mention, his heart is broken at the end because Christine goes with Raoul :( (I was bawling. Seriously. Bawling. Even though I knew what was coming), and I don't think that Shaun would want to play the guy who gets left alone at the end ;)

Actually, Josh Groban sounds pretty good...I actually haven't heard anythign by him in a VERY long time, so I forget what he sounds like. But I remember being impressed.

Hey, tMR, have you heard Nightwish's version of 'Phantom of the Opera'? It's pretty good, IMO, but not as good as the real version. Too EGGMERCOP for me. lol.

We need to get a mod to add 'Petition' POTO 'Amy and ?' to this thread and start a petition to get her to do it.

I think that she would do it. I really do. She is the only one who could take Sarah Brightman's spot.

I am excited about the idea of even starting a petition.

Here is the trailer.

Coming in the fall of 2005, Amy Lee brings the role of Christine back to it's origin. Her Anglelic voice and eggmercop style of music tranforms The Phantom of the Opera into what it was always destined to be. Gothic. Coming in the fall of 2005, Amy Lee as Christine Daae.
Tickets going on sale, July at the official EvParty.

Phantom was the first real show I ever saw, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I also love Amy and her voice dearly, but she could never play Christine. She doesn't have the range. Very few women do. The part was written for Sarah Brightman, who has an AMAZING range. The Phantom must also have a very impressive range to sing the part. There are some very high notes he's gotta hit as well.

As for the movie, since they're toting it as "Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera" and not Gaston Leroux's, it's gotta be based on the musical, which kicks much ass. I'll be excited to see it. (oh yeah, it says right on the site "Based on the stage musical")

Katya
10-12-2004, 07:32 PM
Yeah, I know. I was so excited when I saw that it was going to be based on the musical, not the novel.

Naaah, I think you're wrong, sariala. I think that Amy DOES have the range. Remember the MTV Diary from last year? When it showed her vocalizing? She goes up to an E or so (I'll have to check), seemingly without much effort. That's the highest note that Christine has to hit.

And we've established, through Going Under lol, that she has the ability to go low as well.

But I won't argue with you in the fact that Sarah Brightman's range is friggin' AMAZING. :D

Regardless if it is based on the novel or the musical, it still needs to be put into screenplay format. That is a format, that if not done correctly, can be lost in translation.

As a screenwriter, as a hobby, there needs to be someone who is passionate about the musical on board as a consultant. He needs to be in every process of the writing to the lighting to the filming to the editing. There are certain aspects of the musical that can will be lost on film but they need to minimize the lost by special effects. The chandelier scene is something that they will have to work with. It will never be as good as hte musical but they can, with special effects and great acting, bring it to a new level.

im in love with the show.... ive seen it only twice and its by far the most amazing musical there is. i dont even think it should be classified as just a 'musical' i love it so much.

the movie looks iffy though. im not too sure how theyre going to work it and still get the same effect. nothing will quite give you the feeling you have when you in the theatre watching the show onstage... then theres the question of what theyre doing about all of the music. are they doing an exact score or what? i dont know. it could be good... but then again it has the potential to be disastrous.

im not getting my hopes up but ill definatly be going to see it.

Actually...Minnie Driver isn't singing in it, she's being dubbed. She does actually sing the song rolling in the credits though, forgot what it's name is. I don't know if I like the changes made to the Phantom himself..especially with Joel Schumacher behind the helm...he says the phantom needs to be more sexier...

There hasn't been a book completely on the musical itself. There's "Phantom" by Susan Kay, there's the original book "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux. Maybe that's the one you are talking about. Also, when the musical came out(and there's several musicals based on the story itself, Lloyd Webbers is the most popular one, naturally)they put out a book called "the complete phantom of the opera". I think it's out of print, it's one I don't have, but it has a lot of pictures from the ALW Musical.

Maybe you can see the U.S Phantom of the Opera Tour? That's how I saw it, I know I couldn't afford to go to New York.

I do not believe Amy has the range, its a very hard part, especially the end. Eh, Brightman has a tremendous range, Charlotte Church owns her though, I believe. And yes Tarja from Nightwish can sing it quite easily. What you hear on the Nightwish CD's is just a fraction of her range and power.

Gah. Josh Groban is not an opera singer. He has a beautiful voice, but he is no opera singer and THIS IS AN OPERA.

Unless you turned Phantom into a Rock Opera, hahaha, that would be amusing.

I really, really hope it is as good as it looks. I think Johnny Depp should have been the phantom though! But, he's had a lot of roles latley. But he would look really sexy in that mask (I'm not even a Johnny lover, well acting wise yes, but I don't think he's that cute). Thanks Depplover, I seen your av and pictured that phantom mask on him, with that picture. Very hawt, thank you! ;)

This movie looks good. I've never seen the play before, so it'll all be new to me. I was watching the trailer and was like, the young girl looks really familiar. I looked her up and saw she was in Mystic River and The Day After Tomorrow. That's why she looks so familiar.

Wait...it's out already?! I thought it wasn't out until Christmas Eve!

Ohh I bet that scene with Christine in the graveyard was awesome! :D

Was all the music in it? I hope so....

Ehhh Nightwish's version...ehh. The guy sounds too much like a growling rock star and nowhere near the mysterious Phantom. Listen to the original with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford and you'll see what I mean. Michael Crawford's voice...is just amazing.

Phantom is really an operetta. Meaning, it's not a full-out opera with no speaking. It has some speaking but it's mostly sung. I love it :) I'm not an opera diva but I LOVE stuff that's mostly sung. Especially Phantom and Les Miserables. :)

Eh, I don't know how I feel about it still..you know you are if you like the book so much and the movie might stray a bit? Yeah, that's kinda how I feel. Oh well :)

For those who like Gerard, I hope it brings him a lot of acclaim, and some more big parts in movies. I can't say as I've got myself used to his phantom yet, there were a lot of changes to his character in the movie version to make him 'sexier' which I still don't understand. The cape and the mask were waaaaaaay sexy enough on stage. And the point is, well you know, the phantom kinda has a disfigurement goin on. Dunno if I'm wild about his singing voice, but that isn't a slam. That's called I'm used to the man I saw on stage and Mr. Crawford.(which I think everyone who has the movie soundtrack might want to purchase that someday too, just to see the diffferences. I get a kick out of listening to all the different recordings from around the world) Can't say enough about Miss Rossum, what a great actress. And that Patrick Wilson(he plays Raoul, if anyone doesn't know ;))

It opens today in select cities. I'm not driving an hour, people. It's sleeting today, it's icy. Next month sometime it becomes wide release though, so everyone that wants to can see it.

I kinda wish Tim Burton could direct a version of it someday. Not the musical, just a version of phantom itself. That, would be way cool.

The book and the Musical are quite a bit different, as is every Phantom movie.(and seriously, there's a lot, some of them good, some of them, good lord what stinkers. You should see the silent film sometime, that one's fun) There's several musicals, Lloyd Webber's is the most famous, naturally. The Movie musical is based on the stage version.

Get the Original London Cast recording with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman instead. It's a million times better, singing and orchestration-wise.

I've seen the play on Broadway, saw this movie last night. I have many problems with Gerard's Phantom in how he portrays the part.

I hear that a lot from people. Mostly he was too young to play the Phatom and other things.

I was confused too, but I'm pretty sure that old man was Raoul and the old lady was Meg. :)

As for Gerard being too young, I also read that they were trying to make this a "younger" version... I think they wanted someone even younger than Emmy, but she was perfect for the role. Initially, I had troubles with his voice, but it grew on me. :) I love it now! I can feel all the emotion he's trying to convey into the song...

I just saw this movie, and it was really good. I've seen it on Broadway though, and nothing can compare to a Broadway play. The music is amazing; Andrew Lloyd Weber is a genius.

Yeah, the phantom did seem really young though.. and the face underneath the mask was a lot more gruesome in the play than the movie too.

While watching it, I thought... Ewan McGregor would have made a great Raoul, based on how great his voice is. I didn't really like the Raoul that was in this movie.

Jill
12-27-2004, 03:58 AM
Well, Raoul's role on paper is as cardboard as he is on screen. That's through Webber's own fault. Very one-dimensional character. Makes it hard to care for his and Christine's relationship. But Patrick Wilson did a sufficient job with the mediocre role. He has a nice, natural tenor voice. He's also starred in a stage production of Oklahoma... so he's credible.

I'm just appalled at this film's Phantom. I have always interpreted the show as focusing on an insecure, horrifying ghostlike creature inside and out whose pain and hurt eventually surface through his love for Christine. Gerard's Phantom is played too "cool", too confident. He's almost seemingly normal (or as normal as Phantom can be). His face looks the least bit disfigured and it's hard to believe he is such a pained character. Gerard also acts in one emotion: over the top anger. He's uniformly angry throughout most of the film and then he's crying and sad. I didn't see a smooth transition there like I HEAR in Michael Crawford's performance on the Original Cast Recording.

By casting Gerard as Phantom and taking a new direction with how he's portrayed, the show and creation is now made digestable for the non-theater-goers. I'm sure the masses would be quite turned off to find a much older, disfigured and scary man lust over a 17 year old chorus girl and even hint at a potential romantic pairing... oh well. so goes life.

I just had a question, and I'm wondering if anyone here knows the answer: on the movie soundtrack, Madame Giry tells Raoul to keep his hand at the level of his eyes when he goes down to the Phantom's lair. And during "Down Again/Track Down This Muderer" that phrase gets kind of echoed back. What does that mean? Why does he have to keep his hand at the leve of his eyes? It's been a few years since I've seen the musical, so I don't remember if that was in there or not.

Two parts oon the soundtrack made me want to cry: At the end of "Down Again/Track Down This Murder" when the Phantom says, really quietly, "Christine I love you" I just lost it. I'm such a sucker for stuff like that. And during "The Point of No Return" when he starts singing "All I Ask of You" to her. I just thought I'd mention that. In the version of the play I saw, the Phantom cut a fine line between making you hate him and making you feel sorry for him. I think that's the way he needs to be portrayed. Still haven't seen the movie, but I'm dying to.

I saw this movie and I really liked it. I waited for so long for this. But unfortunately I am in Germany right now so I saw it translated. All the songs were in German. I mean, yes the movie is great and I love the whole soundtrack but NOT in German. As I was watching it I kept playing the song in English in my head and afterwared I listened to the soundtrack.
I was really disappointed by the translation and the voices they used. I'll see it again in English when I buy the DVD.

To those that asked about the Prologue of the Old man in the wheelchair. Yes, that's Raoul. That's how it starts in the stage musical.(though Meg wasn't in it in the stage version,t hat may very well be her in the movie version) That part always makes goosebumps stand on my arms, the hair on the back of my neck stand straight on end man, because once the overture begins...*sighs* LOL. They're auctioning off old things that the opera house had, and Raoul comes back to collect Tiki , the Monkey.(at least, to my knowledge, he's called Tiki). I haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know what part Tiki plays in it, but Christine had formed an attactment to the monkey,b ecause it played when she awoke down in the lair after 'music of the night' and in the final lair scene, when Erik sings to it and covers half it's face.

"your hands at the level of your eyes" thing may come from the Leroux more than the stage version. There were rumors about the ghost, that Buquet tells to the Ballet Rats, that he has no nose(which in the Leroux book, he has no nose), and to look him in the face meant your death. In the book the phantom has these yellow eyes, kinda like a demon's eyes, and you weren't supposed to look at them. That's what the "magical lasso " part is about. Erik hangs people if they meet him, to put it bluntly. LOL. And, oh yeah, I think that they made him younger on purpose, but all of us older phans remember the book "the phantom of manhattan". Making the phantom younger and sexier started there, if anywhere.

I've heard phantoms from around the world, and sure, every now and again you get to hear something you're not wild about. To tell you the truth , I didn't like "queen of the damned" on film, but plenty of people did. I got over it, in time. Besides that, the Stage musical will always be there. I'll be going to see the movie to explain things that the stage version did not have time to.

LOL "Past the Point of No Return" is hands down, my favorite part, because of the tension in the scene. Though I definately was sad when he sung the part from "all I ask of you", I get miffed at him there, because that was what Raoul and Christine were singing together-that's just, heh, wrong. Not to mention I know what's coming. Eh, love those characters anyway. ;)

I just saw the movie earlier today and it was so amazing!!! I mean, I've read the book and stuff so actually seeing it all being acted out was wonderful. And about the hand at the level of your eyes thing, it's because the Phantom is a very clever man with ropes in the dark and such, so putting your hand there helps you to detect any dangling rope or noose before it kills you.

I think you're talking about the silent movie with Lon Chaney. I'm not too sure though. In most movies and books the phantom dies. In Lloyd Webber he just disappears and Meg holds up the mask(I guess that's to signify that he went off somewhere to die, but I'm not sure). Don't know how the movie handles it.

Hehehe and to whomever said that "Anywhere " reminds them of Raoul and Christine, to me "before the dawn" reminds me of Raoul and Christine. I might be finally seeing the movie this weekend. I hope I don't die of a heartattack  :

It was amazing.)?

i wanna watch it but haven't found time to.. kept staying back to work till really late! it does sound and look good though.

ok, i saw the movie today and i really liked it, except afterwards i had the music of the night song stuck in my head for ages, well not the whole song just that 1 line cause thats all i knew lol. it was really long which is understandable but by the end by lower half was practically numb :D it's an awesome movie though.

And about the hand at the level of your eyes thing, it's because the Phantom is a very clever man with ropes in the dark and such, so putting your hand there helps you to detect any dangling rope or noose before it kills you.

Ahh, I thought it was something like that. Thanks. I did read most of the book, but it was a while ago and I don't remember exactly how it went. I am reading it again now, though.

Though I definately was sad when he sung the part from "all I ask of you", I get miffed at him there, because that was what Raoul and Christine were singing together-that's just, heh, wrong

I thought that at first too, but after thinking about it I realized that it really wouldn't make sense if he started singing some other random song to her. And that's also a way, in my mind, of comparing Raoul's feelings for Christine with the Phantom's, and maybe even comparing Christine's feelings for the two of them.

I finally saw it :)

It's not as good as the stage version (which I am seeing again in 18 days!!!! *spazzout* :D), but it's still a good movie :) I liked it a lot, and I didn't mind the changes either.

I figured they'd have the chandalier fall at the end of the movie, rather than after 'All I Ask of You'. That's one of those dramatic cinematic moments that's just a given ;) lol.

Thought Raoul could've been better though. And I'm getting nitpicky, but the Phantom was a little too hot LOL ;) Madame Giry was great, I just wish that they'd made her the "dictator" that she is in the show (she taps her cane on the stage and everyone quiets down LOL). And Minnie Driver as Carlota...was HILARIOUS :D She rules.

Liked the swordfight between Raoul and the Phantom, too :D That was really cool.

They did the movie very well, IMO :) I'm really happy with them.

I just got back from seeing it for my third time.

I'm in love with Erik. Gerard Butler was good. His voice isn't as good as Crawford's, but he put more emotion into the role if you ask me. I'm one of those people who think Christine belongs with Erik.

My favourite scenes are either when Erik sung music of the night or when him and Christine sung The Point of No Return. <3

The only scene I didn't really like was the sword fighting scene. I. don't. like. Raoul.

*goes off to read the book again*

I also made an Erik/Christine wallpaper (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v58/shardsofme/Wallpapers/poto.jpg), if anyone's interested. :)

Haha... and I thought my sister and I were the only ones! Lol... now that I've been asking around, I'm surprised at how many people dislike Raoul. I mean, he's sooooooo darn annoying and he gets in the way all the time... during the movie my sis and I were silently cheering when Raoul fell into the Phantom's trap... i wanted him to die. Heh... and yeah I think Christine definately belongs with Erik.

I think you summed it up really well. Personally, I think that most people are being too hard on it. I mean, sure it's not Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, but that doesn't make it horrible! Anytime a classic (i.e. movie, song, musical) is remade, there are going to be people who hate it.

About Raoul, he is a boring character. Well, he obviously has to be in the story, he just doesn't have that great of a part and he could only do so much for that role.

I wanted Erik to stab Raoul in the back during the sword fight.. but that's just me. >_> Raoul is just so.. boring.

Seeing it for my fourth time on Wednesday. Yay.

Although I do agree with you, PhantomsPandora, that the stage version is better.

It wasn't the singing that bothered me really(He reminds me of Steve Harley, his voice, I dont' know what it is about it), it was what got cut out. I'm one of those that likes Raoul, though I know I'm in the minority there.(and, yes I do like Erik, but I can understand why she left him, when he killed those around her and threatened to kill the boytoy) And actually, the movie did him(Raoul) a big favor in bringing him a little heart. Usually int he show you have to pray you get a person that can bring something to him. And he's always been a little neglected, whatever story you read. I liked that he told her he was sorry for making her be in "Past the Point of No Return". That always aggravated the unholy snot out of me. Not that I don't like both Raoul and Erik.

I liked the part where Christine and Carlotta exchanged, eh, words in the stage version and would have liked to see that girl have some spit and fire in her, just a little. I won't gripe too much. My mother loved it, very much, and that was interesting to me, because she's told me several times she doesn't like musicals. I liked some parts, some I didn't.

The only part that really, really ate my breakfast was when she was caressing his face and ripped his mask off at the same time. Meany pants. Oh yes, and Erik's dolls were freaking halarious, I kept getting images of that scene from spaceballs.

And some parts, like the notes and the secret engagement at the masquerade were different, because they're supposed to sing all that and they talked thru some of it, and it was weird.. :)

they all did a great job at singing, but i guess i'm too picky with some stuff, cuz i've only heard the version i have on cd and i love that one! i'm addicted to it! ;)

Well, if you think about it, they have to use the recording of the voices and lip-synch on the set. Because when they're moving and such, they can't be singing. And while they COULD, they can't have the entire orchestra behind them so that they can hear what they have to sing.

I thought they could've done a better job at making the sound fit the scene. You won't get a studio echo in an open graveyard. lol.

3 new ones? I only heard of 2 new songs... There's one that's already on the movie OST, but we all have to wait til the movie comes out on DVD for the other one (that I know of) - that scene was cut from the movie. I think it's called "Nobody Will Listen" or something like that.. it was a song that was supposed to explain more of the Phantom's background.

The only new song I know is "Learn to be lonely" and they play it during the credits after the movie, I think... but it's in the OST too. BTW, where can I hear the other two new songs?

Yeah, the only new song I heard was Learn to be Lonely. Part of it is in the movie, and all of it is during the credits.

Like I said before, you can hear/see that cut scene with the new song when the DVD comes out. :D That's part of the reason why I'm so anxious to see this movie go on DVD...

I saw it about 2 weeks ago when I got it from Blockbuster. I LOVED IT. The man who played the Phantom, though, had a bit too raspy and harsh of a voice, if he was supposed to be an ex-opera singer, you know? But hey, it worked. Emmy Rossum's vocal range is astounding, and on a vain note: I love her hair. Makes me proud of my curls. haha.

I personally loved Gerard's voice. I thought it was perfect with Emmy's. I had seen him before in Tomb Raider and Dracula 2000, and I would've never though of him as having the ability to sing like he did. With good training and natural talent, i think he sounded great. As did Emmy. She has an amazing vocal range. I'd never be able to hit the highest notes she did.

The highest note she holds in the entire movie is an E-flat6, the last note of "The Phantom of the Opera", in the scene where The Phantom takes Christine to his chambers. That is VERY high. The average soprano range ends at an A5. I'll try to find clips from the movie and figure out what the lowest note she held in the movie is.

I loved it!!
I can't believe I almost didn't watch it.
Anyways I missed a little bit of the first, but I'm going to buy the DVD.
Emmy Rossum is beautiful!
AHHHH I'm so in love with this movie.

Yeah. That was a very high note. Probably the highest I've ever heard. I was listening to the song earlier, and every time I'm still amazed at the end of it because of how well she can sing.
I think, though I'm not entirely sure, that maybe the lowest note was during "The Point of No Return", when she says, "When will the flames at last consume us". "Consume us", being the lowest note, though I think it's held with "us". It's right before her and Gerard start singing together.

I know... I so wish I could hit that high Eb6 but oh well... my vocal range is only up to a B5, or a note higher on good days. lol. But my sister said her voice sounded mechanical on that note. Maybe it was er... digitally... nevermind.

Don't worry about how "far" your range goes, just be happy you have a healthy working instrument (meaning your voice.) :) I hit an Eb6 before, and it was very scary. I'm an alto so everyone around me was really shocked, hahah.

Anyway, all the actors had to do their own singing in the movie, and since Emmy's been in over 20 operas, I doubt they would digitize it. That's her voice.

Yeah. At first I didn't know that she used to be an opera singer, but then I saw it on her site. She was in the Metropolitan Opera since she was about 7 or so.

xFarther_Awayx, I went and listened to a few tracks from the movie, and from the ones I've listened to, the lowest note she holds is an A3. I think she hits an Ab3 (half-step lower) in another song, but I didn't hear that one. That makes her vocal range in the play 2 and a half octaves. Amazing. :O

Woahmygod. That's amazing!

My range got good, then went bad again in the space of a couple of weeks. Ah well. Singings not really my thing anyway

I wouldn't worry about your range, be happy you can sing at ALL! Some people cant. Oh, and in case you were wondering...average range per vocal part for women is a little under 1.5 octaves. :D

You know, there's been the whole discussion about Emmy and Gerard vs. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford...but honestly, even from a few years back when I first heard the Sarah/Michael original versions, I was never that crazy about either of them. Sarah has a nice voice, but I didn't like how she sounded in some of the songs. And as for Michael Crawford, I just honestly don't like his voice that much. But that's just me.

Well, in the good old days, I was slightly over that. I haven't checked myself recently. But I'm really not good. It'll never stop me though. :p

I was just flipping through channels and I caught Emmy on some movie on Lifetime, and she was just singing regularly. It was cool to see her not singing opera. She sounds great doing both, though. And I forgot to put in my last post, yesterday my mom bought me the movie. I've watched it twice, including the bonus features. It's awesome.

This might sound dumb, but I was thinking earlier...couldn't some of Ev's songs fit into the POTO story? (If Christine was a kick ass rock chick, that is.) Here's an example:Bring Me To Life could be about how the Phantom inspires her music and her voice; Going Under, Taking Over Me, and Haunted could be about how he haunts her and won't let her go; Anywhere could be like All I Ask of You; My Immortal could be the song she sings to her father. Just a thought I had :D

Yeah. Those songs could fit into the movie. But if they used them, I wonder if they'd sing them operatically, or like they're sung normally.

I loved that song. The Musical Theatre class at my high school had a part of their exams on Friday; they had to choose a song from a musical to sing solo. Well, it started out good, the girl had an awesome voice, and out of no where (the side of the stage, I know, but he wasn't on the programme), came a guy wearing a dress shirt and a tux-like coat, his hair hanging intentionally in his face.

He nailed it. Every note. Completely blew the audience away. He was absolutely wonderful. Because of him, I have decided to sing that very song when I take that class in a few years. Gerard Butler, you're fired. Josh McGill is taking your place.

I have been a huge phantom of the opera fan for a very long time. A lot of Evs songs could relate to POTO, which is what really drew me to this band.

As for the movie, at first I was really disappointed with the voices, but then all I had to go on was the 4 times I saw it on stage and the OLC. After watching it a few more times the voices grew on me and I'm a really huge Gerry fan now. I think he really nailed it. Emmy's protrayal really annoyed me. I thought she did a fairly good job singing, but her facial expressions did NOT change throughout the film. She had that deer in the headlights look constantly. Other than that I thought that the film was really well made. It could always be better, but it was a lot better than some of the other versions of this tale that I've seen.
