I was just wondering if there would be anyone here who would be able to assist me with a few photographs that I would like to have photoshopped.
I know very little about it, so I'm not at liberty to do it myself, and I see a lot of great ideas here. It's mainly just a few pictures of myself, with shitty background that I'd like to look a bit ...cooler (For example, not my kitchen counter, complete with toaster ;) ). It's one of the more ...simple things to do, I would imagine.
I'd rather not post the pictures here, if you know what I mean, but if anybody can help me, let me know and I'll PM you.
Thanks.

Apryl,
I'm at your disposal if you'd need my help.
PromiscuousBoy,
If you want I can post a tutorial on how to make your own brushes in CS & CS 2. It's really easy and only your imagination is the limit on what you can do.

...
Is there any way of customising the Tools section? I only really need three things on it and it just gets in the way!:(

Yep in CS2 you can create a custom tool set and never use the proper Tool window again.
Again I could post a demo on how to customize tools and build brushes from scratch if enough people are interested.

Apryl. I'd love to photoshop some of your stuff but time right now just won't allow me to do it the way it needs to be done. I'm sure that Craig will do a wonderful job.
Hey Craig, I'd love to learn about making brushes in photoshop.

Can you do it in 7?
Sorry, I should have said.

I can't say I'm fantastic at it. All I can really do is cut pictures and blend them in together along with an overlay. Nothing fancy really. I would help you if I was good enough Apryl!
I would appreciate some advice on stuff in photoshop myself :)

I will definitely try and post a demo on:
-How to build custom brushes
-How to build custom tools
I haven't used PS 7 in a long time. I know building a custom tools set where all the tools are shown together in a CS 2 feature only BUT you can still create customized tools. They just can only be seen/used when the normal tool is selected.
This weekend I have a hard deadline for three paintings and I'm about 2/3 of the way through painting #2. So maybe by Sunday evening I'll have that done.
It just takes me time to do screen caps etc...hmm. I could even do a video capture with me talking through the whole process. I'd need my laptop for that and it's at work...We'll see maybe I'll do that one way or another.
Any other topics anyone wants to know about?

Wow, that'd be awesome! You sound very busy though!
That reminds me of our maths teacher's videos of himself doing the maths on the mini whiteboard, which is all you can see, you can just hear his voice over the top.
That sounds interesting... I just need to get rid of everything but the paintbrush, rubber and colour picker! Andy maybe something else... I can't really concentrate, Diseased is very good loud.

and for textures I like http://www.ofthesky.net/tre-xture.html
If you guys want more just let me know and I'll start ranting lol..

Ok! Custom Brush and Tool demo:
1. Go to File -> New. Set the file as shown.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/01.gif
2. Make sure the Tools Window (Toolbox) is up. Go to Window -> Tools. Select the Brush Tool from the Tool Window. It's the brush icon 4th down on the right.
We need a basic brush shape to use to start with.
3. Make sure the Options Window is up. Go to Window -> Options. This is one of those Windows you should always have open in Photoshop (along with Tools, History & Layers). Note the drawn in labels I used on the Options Window: Tool Presets button, Brush Settings button, Mode, Opacity, Flow, Custom Settings button.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/02.gif
4. Click on the Brush settings and set the current brush as shown. Use a basic brush head to start with. Any of the first few will do.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/03.gif
5. Then click on the Custom Settings button. Change the settings as shown:
Shape Dynamics = Size Jitter 2-4%, Control: Pen Pressure.
So this directly relates to a peripheral tablet! If you don't have a tablet/stylus of some kind, it makes using brushes in Photoshop very limited.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/04.gif
6. Next, we need to alter the Other Dynamics. Opacity Jitter = 4-6%, Control = Pen Pressure. Flow Jitter = same.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/05.gif
7. Note that under Other Dynamics are other settings to change. These are all on or off type settings. There are no special controls to set. For this brush, click on Smoothing and Protect Texture. Note also the brush style preview at the bottom. This is basically a zoomed view of how your new brush will function.
8. Ok. I always need good environmental brushes like grass! Here I have painted a little tuff of grass in black with the custom brush in the new file we made.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/06.gif
9. Ok here's the neat part. Once you're happy with your little pattern, use the Marquee Tool (see red circled item on the Tool Window. Click towards the upper left corner of your pattern and draw out a marquee box hat fits the whole pattern.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/07.gif
10. Now, go to Edit-> Define Brush Preset...
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/08.gif
You should see this:
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/09.gif
I named mine "grass02".
11. Ok now, select the Brush tool from the Tool Window (or hit the B key) and go back to the Option Window. Click on the Brush Settings button and your new brush pattern will be waiting for you! Select it from the list at the very bottom.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/10.gif
12. Now...that was a Custom Brush...but to have this REALLY work well I need a Custom Tool.
13. Ok with the Brush tool still selected with your nifty new brush pattern selected, go to the Custom Setting button again on the Option Window.
14. For this brush I want a nice, random, organic feel. So I used the following settings for Shape Dynamics: Size Jitter = 79% , Control: Pen Pressure; Angle Jitter: 52%, Control: Pen Pressure; Roundness Jitter: 100% with Minimum Roundness set to 25 %. Honestly, do whatever you want. Experiment!
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/11.gif
15. Last but not least, to save this or any Custom Set brush we need to save this as a new tool. Click on the Tool Presets button on the Options Window, then in that menu click on the pop out arrow and select New Tool Preset. I called mine "grass02". Now basically that tool can be accessed at anytime from the Tool Preset button. This is only true in CS 2 however. In CS, you have to have the default Brush Tool selected.
http://www.craigbrasco.com/evboard/brushes/12.gif
Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg. You can do this with any tool that uses a brush-type tool as it's basis. Also of course once you paint with it, applying different modes and color in general can produce some amazing results!
Well, hope that helps?
Please feel free to ask questions/point out anything weird about what I said.
