Due to an increase lately in attempts to register prohibited or discouraged usernames, I thought it would be appropriate to ask all prospective members of EvBoard to READ THIS FAQ ITEM (http://evboard.com/faq.php?faq=gen_rules#faq_user_name).

Attempts to register with prohibited or discouraged usernames simply result in wasting your time and ours. We ban your username, and you have to try again.

Yes, I recognize that making this thread is futile, but I had to do it just in case.

Nice.

I would be unique, but luck has it that my name is the same as Will's sister {If I remember correctly}. So I get mistaken for her a lot. Particularly by b00bles.

-stabs name-

I could start going by Seph {short for Persephone} because that's what everyone calls me these days. But I don't know how original that is either. I guess I'll just stick to good ole' Kendra.

::Raises an eyebrow:: Oh yeah, I know tons of people that call their friends after the names of mythological gods and goddesses... lyke that is totally, so unoriginal. But in all seriousness... do people really call you that? (If so - weird.)

And too bad you guys (mods) can't just go back and delete ALL the "original" Evanescence usernames. It seems like the much newer thing is using song lyrics, so it doesn't quite seem like you're a fan whore.

End.

Question: do payed subscribers have the option of changing their usernames? Because then I would consider becoming one. For some stupid reason, I was having a total brain lapse when choosing my screenname and ended up with my name.
And my last initial.

Manking an unique name is pretty easy when you use your brains. It tooked me for ½hour to get into name Kuolema (meaning "death"). Just simple english word traslated into my own language. Many not-finnish-speakers say that they like my name. If I hadn't choose Kuolema, I would be Mew but then I realised that everybody would think that I'm some kind of pokemon fan...

This is the only message board i've EVER been to that is so stuck up and has so many rules and regulations for posting! I hate posting because im afraid i'll get banned for a stupid little rule. You know why all the the message boards are so laid back and relaxing, because they dont have fire breathing moderators saying 'you cant do this, you cant do that'. . .ok, some rules are good, like the AIM speak....but a little thing like double posting? who cares?! if you double post then you double post, i dont see the harm. This board is like a bloody penatentiary, there's no way to be free, Im always thinking of posting something, then dont because i feel like im gonna break another corny rule. And you moderators need to be more NICE! you stamp your big feet all over this place the newbies get scared to death man! Just settle down a little bit and have some understanding for goodness sake. And instead of threathening to ban me for this post, please actually comment on my statements and do something about it.

One problem is that your statements are things that people have said 10 million times. The FAQ is there. Read it, and pay attention. You obviously know not to double post. Therefore, don't do so. You should know to read sticky threads and forums titled important information, and news and announcements. It kind of makes common sense. So what's the big deal?

The rules are here for a reason. When people have usernames that consist of 'Imaginary109417' or 'BringMeToLife21875' or 'AmyLee1745156561' it gets extremely difficult to keep track of members. On a board with over 10,000 members, it's easier to encourage original usernames than to waste time trying to sift through members with the example usernames listed above.

I would recommend that you try to be more understanding about the job that we have to do. It's not always the easiest thing in the world to accomplish. We merely try to keep the order as best as we can.

The moderators that start these rules didn't do so to restrict members for no reason. The rules were started because something was obviously not working correctly, and a moderator felt that putting a rule into place would help the board run more smoothly.

That's all we want.

Smooth. Like butta.

lozboz87, while I agree that there are a lot of rules here, I rather like it. And you're condemning the very rules that many n00bs - brand NEW n00bs, mind - are praising. There are 11,000+ members on this board. While roughly 1/5 of them actually participate on an active basis, that's still around 2,000, and that's a lot. Most people I've talked to are impressed with how organized we manage to keep things here.

This board is complicated. The rules are spelled out. There are people who aren't mods to guide n00bs though the snarls that just come with being new, and who answer questions - the Welcome Committee.

The moderators, by the way, are people. They are volunteers. They do not get paid to do their jobs but they do them anyway to the best of their ability. They all have lives outside of the board - jobs, school, families. And yet they devote one hell of a lot of time to this board. Personally, I think they deserve a lot of credit.

P.S. Would you like it if you had to wade through 80 trillion threads asking questions that were answered 10 times? Or threads started just to say 'OMGZ AIMEE LEIGH I LUV U LYK OMGZ WHOA' or whatever? Didn't think so. This board makes an attempt to keep the intelligence from sliding below a tolerable level, in my opinion, and that's just fine with me. And actually, the rules have been slackened a bit. When I first joined, the rules (and the mods) were a lot tougher. (In reference to this particular rule, it's really to stop the MyImmortal23840273820 and HauntedImaginaryWhisperAmyLee screen names. It would be hard to distinguish between Haunted20 and Haunted832, for example.)

P.P.S. I help run another Evanescence fan board with two other members from here. We've borrowed some of our own rules from here, and we have a mix of EvBoarders and non-EvBoarders alike there. Guess what? Double-posting isn't in our guidelines, but people follow it anyway. No lie. I've seen a few instances where someone double-posts and then edits like "OOPS sorry!" and will sometimes ask for assistance in removing/editing the doubled post. Self-enforced rule. We're putting it in the guidelines simply because everyone follows it...because it's not a stupid rule. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

You're entitled to your own opinion, of course...but you seem to fail to see why it is the way it is...and why it's working.

Yeh i get that there's a lot of people here and they have a job to do, i know that. but the mods are like police that think they're top shit. Moderators can be normal members if they want, but no, they have to parade around the board looking for something to go wrong so they can attack somebody.
Maybe thats just my opinion, but I only ever come to this place to see if one of the band members have left a message because its not a welcoming place, if a newbie does something wrong you're all like "dont do that! read the rules!!! blah blah" there are ways to tell someone they're doing something wrong without blasting them into the ground.

Machinehead

Well, given what was told to you, and the fact that you didn't get blasted in this thread, (yet) and how you've chosen to respond, it kind of looks like debating with you on the subject is pointless because your mind is made up. Now how many times would you do this with someone before your patience was exhausted? 5 times? 10 times? 50 times? Can you guess how many times the mods have dealt with the same things over and over and over again, despite the past examples on the board, the FAQ, etc? You should be able to figure out where I'm going here.

Katya
02-15-2006, 11:15 PM
I'm a mod. Not a full-out Mod, but a mod for the Advice forum. And I think I manage okay.

The thing is, all these Mods used to be "normal members" too. Once you're a Mod though...no one VIEWS you as a normal member anymore. Now you're a policeman. A nazi. Powers-that-be that people can whine about and bitch to and fight with. I know of one case where a girl got her Advice thread locked by a Mod and harrassed him for ages about it. Is that fair?

They put up with bullshit every day. I would think that it's hard to be all sweetness and sunshine when there's the Mod Queue to trek through, reported posts to look at, and Private Messages from members complaining or bitching, with a few normal questions and concerns mixed in.

Boy, you're fond of making blanket statements, aren't you?

The job of a moderator was to make rounds on the board to keep things in check. But you make it seem like we're vultures and we're not. In my humble opinion, you should be realizing this slowly from the way we've reacted to your rude posts. We're being very kind.

I suggest you gain some maturity before you start complaining about the moderators again. You're insulting us as a group, which is very hypocritical considering the point you're attempting to make. If you expect someone to be nice to you, try doing the same.

Thanks.

It's a fact of life that no matter where you go, especially if you're in control of something, that you won't be able to please everyone. There's a segment of the online Evanescence fanbase that is not compatible with Evboard, and there's not much we can do about it. That's the beauty of there being other places to go. We run this place a certain way that we believe to be the best, and for all the people who can deal with that, they're more than welcome. For those who can't take it, I'm sure there's an online community out there that suits their tastes quite well.

For those who can't take it, I'm sure there's an online community out there that suits their tastes quite well.

Evanescence.it (http://www.evanescence.it) (except I haven't been able to connect to it since yesterday)

Fallen Board (http://fallenboard.cjb.net/index.php?act=idx)

WVBoard (http://s3.invisionfree.com/WvBoard/index.php)

There's the mylastbreath.co.uk forum but there's a TON of negativity there regarding the new album (some of the members even came over here JUST to troll and be like 'hey, ev, you guys suck because you're taking too long and all your fans hate you now'), so I would advise against going there.

There are other forums, but those are the ones I frequent.

lozboz87, none of us have "had a go" at you. We have defended our position. I find that a lot of people who argue a point that doesn't happen to be a popular one call any defense against them "having a go" or "ganging up" or other such term.

If we had truly "had a go" at you, you'd be banned by now. After getting slashed to pieces by any member who wanted to post against you (and here I'm talking not valid arguments but OMG U SUK SO BAD I H8 U and mocking posts), that is.

This is the way the board is. While it's perfectly fine for you to post your opinion, nothing is going to change.

EDIT: ...And now I have no idea where you're getting all your nasty feelings from. I just browsed through your posts to see where you might've gotten the negativity from, and you don't post stupid stuff. Your posts are usually pretty good, and I haven't seen any mod or member strike you down.

Now I think that you just don't like following rules.

P.S. None of the countless n00bs who I've guided have ever complained about being harrassed/pushed down by other members. If they did, there would be something done about it. That's part of why the WC is here in the first place.

EDIT 2: Sorry Tracie!!!!! *hangs head in shame*

Some minion you are..... :p

..but yeah, getting back to what Caleb said. Not only messageboards, but with anything, there is always a group of people who aren't going to be happy with what you plan or the way you do things. Most people don't continue coming here just because the band posts here. They come here because for some people, this is where their "family" is. Not everyone is going to fit in, which is why it's good that there ARE other places for people to post where they feel they do.

w0rd up!

There are a few really cool boards out there, but what it all comes down to is that this place is often misunderstood. Ever since I made FB (which you can check out in the post Katya made up there^; I have realized how hard it actually is to run a board. It's tough on mods, admins and other members as well. I think this place is excellent when you think about all the shit everyone has to deal with from numerous members.

And to also address the topic here, many people have a rough time picking usernames. Personally, I do not get why it always has to be something along the lines of: Amyomglyke87 and Going_Undr4evernever.

To sum my post up, boards will come and boards will go, but there can only be one evboard biznatches!

You gotta love the people still joining with usernames like MyImmortal21384509813452. OK even if you didn't know about Origin which has been around for over 5 years, or Fallen when it came out going on 3 years ago, or the Daredevil soundtrack which came out at the same time, they at least had to know about the single and video which have been out for over 2 years. And they don't think anyone has picked a username like that yet?

You have no idea how many times I was temped to go through and just rename people to UnimaginativeUser0001, UnimaginativeUser0002, UnimaginativeUser0003, etc. :)

i agree... to a point! Obviously Lozboz87 may not fully comprehend the crap a mod has to deal with... especially if it's something basic like a username, everyone should want to be unique and have their personality on the board anyways. And i have had a great time posting on Evboard and had quite good converstaions with lovely mods... through posts etc whilst here but, at the same time i agree with this statement from LozBoz87 about SOME mods

"Im always thinking of posting something, then dont because i feel like im gonna break another corny rule. And you moderators need to be more NICE! you stamp your big feet all over this place the newbies get scared to death man! Just settle down a little bit and have some understanding for goodness sake"

And i disagree to some extent about your post, i beleive some mods do try to ban, give bad and unfair reps to members for no good reason, E.g. something as simple as disagreeing with a mods point of veiw.
And i think if someone does do something wrong e.g. double posting a reminder the first time might be a better idea then threatening the person to watch their step or they'll get the boot! as you commented to Lozboz87 he/she should understand your position as a mod i agree but don't you think it works both ways? maybe some mods should understand people are human and might accidently do something! Anyways... and just a thought... who moderates the mods??? like is their one main person you can go to Brittany? or is all pretty much an equal playing feild? Thanks! That's just my 2 cents :)

ToB is the administrator and has more power than the mods.

I remember when almost all of our current mods were regular members. Try to remember that mods were once regulars, too. And they were n00bs at one point. So they know what it is to be under the mods' administration.

Personally, I find the mods to be pretty fair in what they do. If you've got a particular issue with one, it's a good idea to PM them and discuss with them what's up. Communication goes two ways, after all.

I think that if you give people a chance to help you and realize that you are not a forum expert yet, you can definitely make it to that status. It's a really easy board to be a part of so you should give everybody a chance to help you.

It's doubly unique because the e was replace with an i which was in turn replaced with a y. It'll be really really unique once they replace the y.... with an e.

Smooth. Like butta.

If I remember correctly, RUMOURS FLEW about you guys just deleting EVERY member off the board and emailing them to rejoin. If that's not correct, I'll go burn the person who told me that.

Squeefest
09-05-2006, 12:27 PM
I was skimming through this thread, and I noticed that the administrators are mentioning they have had to delete quite a large amount of members because they have been inactive. So I was wondering, wouldn't be it easier if there is an option here that allows a member to delete his/her own account if s/he wishes? Or is there already one that I don't know of? I think it would take some work of the admin's shoulders, and it would definitely make for a larger percentage of active users. :)

EDIT. Sorry about bumping this thread, I know it's a little old...

Diamon
09-05-2006, 01:15 PM
When old users are cleared out generally it's people who never posted anything and haven't been here in over a year. In general not the type of people that would bother coming back to delete themselves. Allowing people to delete themselves would create a bunch of posts that become orphaned because the user that created them has been deleted. Then you'd have the people who decided I got temp banned/neg repped so I'll delete my account and set up a new one. There's not a whole lot to gain by deleting old users other than freeing up the usernames so someone else can sign up with that name.
