View Full Version : Renewing Norton

I've tried to make what sense I could of the 'how to ask for help' thread and here is a screen shot of my system specs because I don't know which parts are applicable to what...

*Image has been destroyed. Have a nice day*

A computer technician installed Norton AntiVirus Version 9.05.15 on my computer after reformatting a while ago, and didn't really tell me much about it and I didn't get to go through the installation process so I don't know what was involved. I've had a read around and can't really find anything to answer my question.

When I started up today, I got a message saying that Norton needs to be renewed and will expire in 31 days or something. I got taken to a page with pricing options and the following info on it:

What is a subscription?
Your subscription enables you to receive the latest virus and Internet security protection each time you run LiveUpdate.

What if I don't renew my subscription?
If your subscription has expired, running LiveUpdate will only provide product updates.
You will not be protected against the latest Internet security or virus threats until you renew.

So basically I was wondering if any people who are familiar with Norton could explain what this means and what I have to do :)

Let me know if you need any more info, I'll do the best I can ;)

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere :o

When you install the software, you automatically got a 1 year subscription with Norton. What you do is download the updates to protect you from new viruses (with Liveupdate)..

Once it expires, you got to renew it by paying a price, I'd say $20 - 30 probably. If you don't, you won't be able to download the newer updates to protect you from the newer viruses, just like the info you got says.

If you reformat your computer and reinstall it, it'll automatically think you just installed it and your subscription will start from the day you reinstalled it to a year later (most of the time it works like that)..not that I do it on purpose or anything, my computer and laptop are both garbage and I usually have to reformat at least once a year T_T

It sounds like you don't even use Norton. So if you don't, don't worry about it. If you do, renew it, reformat, or leave it alone. It's not that big of a deal although having it on your computer is a big help just in case.

Am I answering a computer question?...what the hell is happening to this world?...

Oh  okay...

I have a firewall; I don't know how much they help; but hopefully it will keep some of the nasties at bay when I'm no longer able to update as I doubt I'll be able to pay for a renewal...

I think I'm pretty much up to speed now :D Thankyou muchly for your help Cyra :D *gives you a cookie*

A firewall will do absoutely nothing to protect you from viruses. I'd strongly recommend you look into AVG's free edition (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/) if you can't afford Norton.

Like it is said above, AVG is free and really good.

Btw, try to avoid taking pictures that show your XP Product ID number. Though in this case it's hard to see.
