I've never done anything wrong here and I try to be nice to everybody most of the time, but so far only one person has given me any points, and the reason for that was 'because I like Nightwish'.

It means you're not doing something terribly "outstanding", things that make people say "Yeah, I like what s/he said." I have very few reputation points, far below the 50 level, but I've been here long enough that it doesn't matter TOO terribly much. It's not so bad :)

Two were bad. ..what I'm getting at is, some stupid people on here give bad rep points any chance they get, and it's always for stupid things. If this rep thing turns into something like "you must have # rep points to be able to get on evboard...or to be able to read certain topics." ..that type of thing. Then I think it would be a bad idea. Like I said before, there are people on this board that give out rep points for totally dumb reasons...that's why I don't think rep points should be taken all THAT seriously. I mean I got a bad rep point for saying I didn't like the song "mono" by Courtney Love. How is that bad? I didn't even trash on anything. I just said something like "I haven't listened to Courtney Love all that much, but I've heard mono and I don't really care for it". If I (and also other members of evboard) end up getting more negative rep points for reasons like that, I don't think it should be taken that seriously. Right now the rep points are ok, but all I'm saying is I don't think it would be a good idea to make it obligated to have a under a certain amount of neg. rep points to get on to the board, or read a topic..or something like that.

That's just my thoughts about it, but hey...if ToB wants to make it that way it's out of my hands, and not my choice. There are so many awesome people here but then you have the immature babies that go out and ruin a good thing like rep points. A few people can take something that would work so well, and turn it into something which you have to revise or rethink to make work well once more.

I know that things aren't like that now, and right now it's almost useless at the moment, but I'm just voicing my opinion because I don't want to see it happen. I like this board waayyy too much, to see it fall into something like that. (btw. Since we are undergoing a change where people below a certain reputation are moderated, why not set whatever that level is to two pips? So we can tell at a glance who is still a n00b. :)

Giving people rep points... good. Giving rep points just because, not. The idea here is, when you see someone's post that you feel is articulated well, positive, or makes sense in relativity to you, then rep them.

I rep for alot of reason, but I will never do it in vain. When it becomes meaningless, it loses all any sense of pride when recieving one.

I like the fact that I can look back on rep points, and be proud of what I said. :)

ToB changed the rep system, it's now much easier to get a higher rep. Yes people are repping more now also, so those two facts combined make the difference you've seen. You mentioned someone having 7 boxes (presumably Cordi/LittleFairdotORG) look at the number of posts she's made. If the rep system works correctly you'd expect the people with the most posts to either have a high rep (or if their posts were all crap an extremely low one).

If you don't think teh rep system is working good enough as it is there's only one thing that can be done to improve it, use it more. Rep people you think have made good posts, that will prompt them to use the rep system also. Then just make sure to make good posts so yuo'll be one of the ones who get repped in return.

Erm, sorry if I'm speaking out of term here, if I am out of line by saying this then just ignore me, but I'm a moderator myself on another forum (which is just a bit bigger then this one, and filled with more angsty teenagers who insist on using 'gay' as an insult), and in my experiance making yourself sound forceful and/or threatening usually won't get you anywhere, regardless of how much power on the board you have. Personally I find if someone's being an ass then just politely asking them to calm down and take a break works better then biting their heads of ;) Best way to gain respect and keep control as a mod or admin is to be as nice and pleasent as possible, not threaten people with bans, at least that's what I find. So maybe lay off the caps lock key? Just a suggestion ;) And again, sorry if I'm out of line by saying that, if so then just ignore me.

You might have a different "moderator" style than I do, and that's fine. But don't come onto my board and give me advice on how to run things here. I've been doing fine for a year here without you, and I'll be doing fine long after you're gone. My style works. Trust me.

The thing is that it gets to a point that we have fairly low standards so new people can get out of screen mode..yet when people have alot of points...they give alot of points via rep and it is like rep inflation to the extreme..only effective to a point.

The "points" thing to the left is different than rep points. Those points are for buying things in the "store". The link is at the top :)

I think this rep thing is a really good idea, I don't know at the mo how many I have but it seems I've got enough not to be moderated anymore, my messages post without being queued or something like it did when I had just arrived... Well, in fact, I'm still a newbie... But it's great being able to post and don't have to wonder when it'll be shown :p

I think it's a good way to sort out who really wants to become a member and
who doesn't. The people that just want to come over here ocasionaly don't care about their messages being moderated... Anyway, next time they'd visit here, their messages'd be posted. Those who want to be an active member and posting regulary will quickly become unmoderated members I think... I didn't even take me one week to become one, I don't know about how long it took for the others but I think it's quite quick. Anyway now I feel free to post but I won't hurry posting everywhere and so on 'til I feel comfortable and find my place ;)

K. Got a question. I noticed a few rep points I got had silver bullets, as opposed to green bullets.

ToB made rep optional, go into the User CP and enable it under Edit Options if you want it enabled.

Only thing it being diabled changes is it not showing on every post and you don't see what rep you've received in the User CP if it's disabled.

The option was added to be able to enable/disable reps, the default is disabled. That way unless you specifically decide to participate in the rep scheme you are unaffected. And if you decide to participate you have no room to bitch about how it works, as you don't have to participate.

Daniel, not everything is as easy as you intend. Fortunately, everyone is different. There are different points of views, people who post immediately and people who post after read carefully not the post of above but the whole thread just to have an idea of what and how to reply.

Go to User CP and then at Edit Options. Sure you have the Reputation disabled. Just click the box and the greeny... things will be back.

there is one way i've found that you can read older messages: if you know who sent you the rep, temperarally put them in your ignore list. then you can't see their comments, so you see the older ones instead. hope this helps. :)

Also, if you remember the posts from which you were repped, you can go back to that post and click on your "Add To Rep" button.

Nothing, but your reputation is not all that big of a deal as long as it's in good standing.

It's important on this board yes, but in the scheme of things, you shouldn't treat it as that big of a deal...because it really isn't.

I only bring this up because there are a lot of immature ppl at the former hole forum who decided to give me negative reputation points because I didn't agree with what they were saying, I found it to be really annoying how immature ppl just do that out of spite, but i guess in the bigger scheme of things it doesn't really matter that much right?

Well new members dont have power to actually influence rep (they come up as a gray box which means there was no effect on your reputation). So some to the situation is alleviated in that you have to prove yourself a little bit before you can affect the rep of other people. Also in general the number of people who use the rep correctly vastly outweigh those who abuse it out of spite. So even if one person negs you out of spite, if you post good posts you'll get more than enough positives to put you ahead.

Some people give more or take off more points than others do. What determines how many rep points you give someone each time you rep them? I'm guessing your own reputation, but I'm not exactly sure.

I don't know about that. Starting out, I received two legitimate negative hits because I double posted (eek!) I've gotten a few legitimate good hits, but I've also received an equal share of illegitimate bad hits because people didn't like my opinion. I can understand reping down comments that are demeaning, highly repetitive, illconceived, or ones that break rules. But a disagreement in thought should not be grounds for a negative point. You don't just trust someone new without getting a feel for what they can provide. Your initial reps were not from a noob in that case. Noobs with little to no rep/post count will not affect your reputation. They'll show up as grey boxes.

This is correct. People negging you simply for an opinion of yours (assuming it wasn't highly inflammatory or a non-contributing opinion in the Debate forum) is an abuse of the system. Anyone is free to disagree in a civilized manner.

If you feel that it's particularly unjust then you can report it to a moderator, but in most cases you should just let it be. Be a good rule-following member and you'll be rewarded.

We do our best to have objectivity in management to prevent the shutting out of opinions. The regular members however can argue with you with whatever mental state they happen to be in, as long as they don't go too far out of bounds.
