This isn't exactly a brand new COMPLETELY unknown band - but they are only up and coming - just a bit more known that most of the bands listed here.
Sigur Ros is a beautiful band, and I've been waiting for a band with sounds like this.

Downloading "The Nothing Song" now... thanks for pointing this band out. Their line-up kinda reminds me of the group I'm trying to put together.

Aren't they Godspeed You! Black Emperorish or am I just making that up? Prehaps I should try listening to them first. GSYBE is awesome, I'm gonna go make a thread on them.

I like them a lot. They're music is so pretty! Some people have told me that they're singing in Icelandic, but it isn't true!
They use their own made-up language in their songs, kind of. I don't know if their words actually mean anything. It's just about making it sound prettier.

Staralfśr is an absolutely beautiful song, and it's in icelandic.

Hopelandish isn't actually a language; it's just mumbling sounds that the singer does because he thinks it sounds neat, sort of like how Thom Yorke writes his songs (he sticks words in that have no bearing on the song because he likes the way they sound). Sigur Ros has been compared to Radiohead a lot and they had a split bill show in Britain (I think) that I would've sold my soul, given up my first born AND commited mass murder to go to.
Alas, no one jumped at the offer

I'm finally listening to this untitled #8 MP3 I got last night..I like it ok, it is kinda Radioheadish, not as much like Godspeed as I had thought for some reason.

But even if it had been in islandic I doubt anyone could translate.. coz Islandic is a strange language.. very simular to old Norwegian,

I think several songs are in icelandic. I know that the CD () is all hopelandish, but other than that I believe it's a mix.
Icelandic is the same language-root as the scandinavic languages, but it just hasn't developed as much, meaning it's very different from the rest (cause they *have' developed lots over the past 1000 years)

Picked up their first cd a while back and basically fell in lurve then. The new cd () is also excellent.
But, what is this double CD I saw at Best Buy....it was only 8 bucks.

their cd von is icelandic mostly.. i think there's a few hopelandic songs on it... pretty sure agaetis byrjun is all icelandic, and () is all hopelandic...
hopefully they will never sing in english.. or the radiohead comparisons would grow even more:) imo they sound nothing like radiohead.. nor coldplay or even GYBE..
they're also a great live band :) one of the best shows i've ever been to (might be slightly biased thought since i've been madly in love with them since 1999:)

Nnnnnnng. I LOVE them. So. So. So. So. Much. I saw a music video for one of their songs once, it had a little boy with some dolls in it, and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Forget the name of the song. But yeah, teej, I totally would've killed, maimed, sold my soul, become a prostitute, etc... for the Radiohead/Sigur Ros show. *Sigh*

Hi people!!!
I have been wondering about this since 2001.
One of the most beatiful songs is Višrar Vel Til Loftįrįsa and it's part of the 1999 album Įgętis Byrjun.
Acording to this site http://www.alwaysontherun.net/sigur.htm this is the translation:
Original

I just listened to the entirety of the new album and that I can say is...wow!
While I loved ( ), it didn't have the depth and movement that Aegtis Byrjun did. As I listen to 'Takk,' I realize that they've managed to synthesize the high points of both albums and create a truely spectacular work of art. If you don't have the new album and are interested in a completely different approach to music, I highly recommend that you check out 'Takk.'
As for anyone else who has listened to it, what do you think of the new material? I love the new developments that they've added with the bells/dulcimer/whatever that ringing sound is.

I caught their live show when they came to Brisbane last month... it was amazing, incredible, beautiful, not enough superlatives can describe it. I swooned when I heard Olsen Olsen, it sounds so sexy with Jonsi screaming and Amiina's string section just blew my mind. I saw a video of their show live in Reykjavic, and I can honestly say the version of Olsen Olsen I saw blew the one I saw on the video out of the water (I'm thinking cos our performance didn't have the horns section at the back, we just had Sigur Ros and Amiina). From what a fellow Sigur Ros fan tells me, the encore is usually Untitled #8, but for an encore we got Glosoli instead (which they played at the start of the show as well) *shrugs*
Maybe it was just our show, but the place was riddled with drugs. A bunch of people were taking puffs of a joint in the queue outside the building, and someone started smoking pot in the front row of the mosh, and we could smell it everywhere. Who smokes pot in a front row of a moshpit?
P.S. Does anyone pronounce it properly ("see-or roce") or do you just stick with "Sigger Ross"? I pronounced it the proper way at the Ticketek office and the poor lady behind the counter was all confused and befuddled and just asked me where they were performing and when :p I can't say I've ever gone into a record store and asked for įgętis byrjun or ( ).. should try that sometime. "Hi, do you have *makes brackets with fingers* by See-or Roce?"

I found them couple months ago now I got the album Takk (going to buy them all of course)... That album just takes my breath away. I just can't name favo songs from it because the songs are all good.
Obsessed.

How popular are they? A few of my friends (in the US) have been raving on about them for ages and I'm only recently taken any notice of them. Good stuff though. I wonder when Australia will start taking more notice of them. I wanna see them live.

You just missed them, Jadey. They were touring Australia in April. And I was very surprised at the sort of crowd it attracted in Brisbane. I thought I would be surrounded by elitist indie kids and hippies, but the majority of the people attending where just your normal people that you'd see wandering around the Valley, clubhopping. Very surprised at how many people turned up. They are more popular than you think, Lessa tells me on last.fm they outrank Fall Out Boy.

I have only just recently started listening to them. I bought Takk a few months ago and love it, love it, love it. I'm partial to Glosoli, Hoppipolla, and Saeglopur. I got () a few weeks ago but have been unable to give it a full listen; must find time to do that.
Screaming Lord, I go back and forth between the two pronounciations, since I'm bad at remembering that sort of thing, but usually I pronounce it the correct way.

I have been a fan of them since their early days, I didn't this thread existed heh, they are freaking amazing, and they don't even sing in english! Imagine if they did? but then again they would be so mainstream and probably over exposed but yea I love these guys, "the next best thing to come out of iceland besides bjork" is a quote i read somewhere and I have to agree, I could go for a bjork/sigur ros tour if you ask me heh.
their videos are a work of art alongside with their music.
