ok... before i ask my question for people opinions i want to get this out of the way... i am a avid muay thai kickboxing fan and started to train and take part in kick boxing compotitions. now i have a big choice to make about geting sugery on my toe and elbow but there is one problem... im kinda scared.. i know.. you might be thinking. "what the hell is someone who gets kicked in the ribs, shins, and jaw scared about". that is the my question to.. i dont know if it is getting "knocked out" and getting cut open or what so has anyone have any kind of sugery what so ever?... the reason i am asking is because i have a choice.
1. get surgery on my elbow to remove bone chips that are keeping me from extending my right elbow when punching AND to completley fix one of my toes that keep breaking from kick people in the jaw when i have thai kick boxing compatitions.
2. not get the sugery on my elbow and still have mobility with my elbow but not full mobility and not the full force of punching
i dont know what to do... i dont want to be put under and then on the other hand i dont want to be awake if something goes wrong.. atleast it is not something major like brain or heart surgery...:o

Hey, I haven't been into any kinds of surgeries or anything like that, but my moms a doctor and has had surgeries on both her shoulders and feet. I don't think you have anything to be afraid of. Considering that you're a Muay Thai fighter you'll survive the pain. With the surgery it will probably take a lot of recovery time..so you may have to slow down on the training..probably even have to put it off for a while. But the plus side is that you will have full mobility with your elbow...but I'm not sure how your toe will work out because it will be going through constant impact..which is what screwed it up in the first place right? Anyways I'm no doctor but I bet you'll feel like shit after the surgery..especially coming off painkillers and out of the anesthetic.
I don't think you should worry too much about the surgery though. Just have a family member or someone there for support or something.

I just had two major eye surgeries last month and I'm having a smaller one next month. I'm not sure what you're asking, though. Are you asking for opinions on what you think you should do?

Have the surgery! Truly it's not all that you are making it out to be. The anticipation of it will be scary yes, but once your anesthesia kicks in you will be fine. When you wake up it will all be over.
Furthermore, not having the surgery may cause more damage in the long run. I would think that continuing to kickbox will only make your situation worse. Surgery may just be an option now but it might be a necessity later.
I have had several involuntary surgeries and as long as you stay on the pain killers and don't overdo it recouperation shouldn't be too bad. And really,(not to sound cliche here but...) All you have to fear is fear itself.
Good Luck in whatever you decide.:)

i completely understand why you're worried about surgery and you shouldn't feel foolish at all for being concerned. it is a daunting experience but it sounds like minor surgery. it may make you feel better to talk to the surgeon and tell him how you feel. he could settle your mind a bit.
i do think you should go through with the surgery as it sounds like it could give you advantages and you can carry on doing what you love.

Definitely go for the surgery. I know surgery can be a bit intimidating, but it's not that big of a deal, especially if you get knocked out.
I've been operated on twice, both for my eyes - once when I was six and the other right after my 17th birthday. I was knocked out for both - I woke up groggy and sleepy and feeling crappy, but it really wasn't that bad. Everyone's nice to you and helpful and will try to make you comfortable.
Think of it this way: you're solving a problem now that could pose serious issues to you when you're older. :)
Good luck!

I've had one surgery and I was in 5th grade when I needed it. (that was five years ago, wow...so long now, lol). Anyways, what I did was a stepped into this huge sandpile barefooted (it was to be used for bricking a house on the street I live on) and I ended up stepping on the long metal bar. I cut my foot open and cut through tendons. That means I was right there at the bone (for anyone who doesn't know). I needed the surgery so that the tendons would be reconnected and my big toe wouldn't stick straight up, lol. I was kind of scared, I remember that. When I got there (to the outpatient thingy) they tried to make me feel at home and all. Then I was taken to one of those small waiting rooms where they put the IV thing in my hand. After that I was wheeled into the OR and they put me to sleep.
Main thing is that the surgery and all seems very scary, but:
1) Being put to sleep is nothing major. The person who does it has been putting people to sleep for years and knows what they are doing.
2) You won't feel anything until after you wake up.
Just be strong. Come on, you can take those hard hits ;) But trust me, having a surgery on something like your elbow is nothing. So, I say get the surgery. Also, you never know what kinds of problems can pop up later if you don't get your elbow fixed. That was kind of the case with my foot too. And if anyone was wondering, I still have my real foot, even though I nearly cut my bones, lol. Good luck Quest. I know you'll be able to do it.

No worries friend! Go through with the surgery! It will most likely enable you to continue what you love without pain... I myself have been through quite a few surgeries (most recently to repair an ankle), and I can tell you that everything will be just fine... whether or not you chose to be "knocked out" or recieve a local anethestic, you will come out of surgery great... and the best thing is, everyone wants to make sure you are comfy--- so take advantage of it and get those elbows and toes worked on so that ou can take your dreams to the next level!

I think you should go through with the surgery, you don't know how it will affect your elbow later if you don't. Of course it will be kind of scary before you get the surgery, but i'm sure you will feel better than you did before. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

 Okay I know surgery is spooky, but at the end it is worth it cause you feel better.
I had two surgeries in the past both were major, and now I am fine.
as far as your elbow surgery, I would say go for it. you be good as new. just take it easy afterwards.
BEST OF WISHES to you

I would say do the surgery, if it will correct the problems your having. I had ankle surgery last year I was afraid to go under the knife and be put out but that happens to everyone. If the surgery will help with your arm extension and give you full mobility i say go for it. and take the time you need to recover fully so you heal properly. The doctors werent sure if the surgery would help me or not and to an extent it did considering that i dont have as much pain as I use to so I look at it as a success. Keep us posted on what you decide and how the surgery goes if you choose it. :) Best Wishes
