Just wondering if someone could tell me what I do to just restore my Windows XP. Do I just put the windows xp cd in and reinstall it ? Sorry, I'm not too smart when it comes to these things.

Click the Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System restore
Im pretty sure thats what you need to do to system restore. It should give you some options when you have done all of the above, to restore to a previous date etc
If you need anymore help after youve found the system restore, just let me know, and if im not able to help im sure someone else can :)

If you want to restore back to a previous state in Windows, follow the directions above.
If you are looking to wipe out XP and all your data and do a fresh install, just put in the XP CD while you are in Windows and it should let you re-install it.

Alright, I'm going to try that right now. I hope I do it right.

You also have to set a restore point, make sure you set one up first, so you can restore back to that date and time. Good luck.

Prior to the following steps, open up Windows Explorer. right click your c drive, "properties", "tools", "error checking". This runs chkdsk upon prompted reboot which checks for damged or missing system files.
If this doesn't fix it, run "system restore" from Start/ Programs/Accessories/System tools/System Restore. Pick a previous date checkpoint and restore back to that and see if the problem is solved.
Download adaware personal use (free) from http://www.lavasoft.de/, do a full system scan and renmove everything it finds.
Update your virus definitions to your antivirus program and scan.
If this doesn't fix the program, insert your XP CD while windows is running and re-install. This will NOT wipe out your applications, but will only require reloading of certain sound card, video drivers and your motherboard's chipset drivers (do the chipset drivers first...check for most updated drivers for your particular computer's chipset online).
You'll then have to go to windows update and have it scan for all needed patches (SP2 etc) and then reinstall those (I hope you're not on dialup as SP2 is something like 90MB).
Good luck.
I aleays like clean installs best, where the C drive is formatted, which is of course more of a pain because you have to reinstall your apps (in addition to all drivers etc) but it is the best fix overall, if your pc is heavily spyware or virused, because this stuff clutters up the registry (it never really comes out all the way) and the end result of short order fixes is often the PC is still not as fast as on a clean install.
Of course, it all gets hosed again sooner or later :^) so back up those mp3's, your MY Docs, your email address book, messages and any downloaded stuff to CDR's so you have that option.
You'll then be ready for when the hard drive dies, and believe me, they do quite die at very bad times.
Good luck,
C

Atomicsynth, Actually when you put the disk in while running Windows it lets you choose between repair or fresh install.
Just a FYI for you, it's not just repair only. It will wipe out everything if you pick the right one.
A repair re-install is usually the wrong way to go about fixing problems.

Alright, I don't have any idea what I did to my computer but I think my stepdad is going to look at it. I ended up reformating the entire drive and now it is saying I only have 2 gigs when I really have 80. I'm not touching the computer I'll let him do the work. Thanks for the help again everyone.

Is there anyway you could tell me how to make the correct partition?

Not without looking at it.
If you boot from the XP CD, it will eventually take you to a screen wher eyou can see all the partitions / delete them / merge them, so on.

Thanks for the help. I ended up getting tired of waiting for my stepdad to look at it. I remembered that I needed to use the Windows 98 startup disc to make a larger drive size. It worked and I have my computer back.

When I get mad at the computer, and I get tired of it, I save the files I want and put the CD in. . .
Then, I virus check it when I update everything and HAVE FUN! . . . I find that works a lot, too!
