At first, I didn't like them, but then I realised that it was all a big joke. The catsuit, the voice, it's all one big middle finger to the music industry and it's damn hilarious.
You couldn't listen to it for hours on end, but in small doses, the album is one of the greatest I have heard in recent times. And it's nice that the music industry gets a little bit of humour and light heartedness that is good for a change instead of things like Busted.

You Americans have NO sense of humour. The Darkness are brilliant! i guarentee some of you who hate them that they will grow on you! it happened here! they are massive here. people are aware of there style and attitude and take it with a pinch of salt.its what the industry needs to break it up a little. there songs are pretty good and they are damn hot live. Juat because its not YOUR style doesnt mean its not good. I was talking to Marcos from The Accident Experiment about new trends in music a couple weeks ago and he was telling me that The Darkness are pegged as the next big thing once they catch on here. I've not yet heard them but he likened tham to Queen...said they're bringing hair rock back. now, i liked hair rock, but if they're as cheesy as you guys make them out to be i probably won't be down...i'll have to wait and see. i guess they're pretty huge in Europe right now.
i can't imagine how anything could be worst than the White Stripes though....

John M

Well they act camp in videos n shit but live they are very sereious(apart from the costumes) they are nothing like the white stripes! they are good and they will grow on you! they are massive hear.i am a huge queen fan of course they dont match up-who could However, some aspects of their music is very reminiscent of queen and other bands such as thin lizzy. the guitatr solos combine techniques favoured by brian may and the legion of thin lizzy guitarists-harmony guitar. Check them listyen to a few of their songs and then post your opinions.

the darkness should rename the song i belive in a thing called love to i belive in a thing called copying legendary bands. they are just a VERY VERY VERY VERY bad rip off of Queen (legends!)
Queen are the first band i listened to and i love them. but as soon as i heard the darknes for the first time i felt sick. they copied everything from Brian May's guitar riffs to Freddie Mercury (R.I.P)'s camp behavior while doing a shit job of trying to make it sound good twisted .
John M
11-22-2003, 05:40 AM
Actually, the singers camp behavious doesn't come from freddy as much as it does David lee Roth in early van halen. But there is apsects of queens music that is imitated but it is more a combination of all the greatest rock acts such as led zep thin lizzy van halen queen and others.

they copy techniques but who doesnt? no matter what you do someone somewhere will have done it before! and to boot-no one is doin it just now except for them! so its kinda a nostalgic thing for some people. you know? i mean sure everyone is entitled to an opinion. at first i didnt like them-couldnt stick em but they grew on me. i listen to most styles as it can improve my personal playing ability and provides a break eg. if im playin in a goth rock band then by listenin to classic rock or someone like the eagles or the RHCP then its different and provides a break-keeps you interested. chow for now. any ev fans from Scotland btw??

How am I being racist? Homosexuals aren't another race... hate to tell you. I think you meant I was being a bigot... which I wasn't.
What the hell? You were using gay in a negative way... NOT POSTIVITE. I was correcting you, saying it is wrong to use the word gay in a negative way. It gives the impression that being gay is something bad, and it isn't. You are turning stuff around on me when you were the one being a bigot in the first place.

how the hell does a debate about the darkness turn into a bigotry/anti-homo thing? over here in Scotland you call something gay it doesnt always approach the meanin linked with homosexuality. it can be used to mean silly, childish, etc as well as camp! and while i dont condemn gays or homosexuality- i dont exactly condone it either, i see it as unnatural but everyone has a right to an opinion right? :D

OK, so I've heard the entire record for the first time and I have to say....I fucking LOVED it! I felt like it was 1986 all over again or something. I grew up on Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Skid Row and Poison so I have no problem admitting I love this kind of music. Some of the stuff does bear a little resemblance to Queen in places, but not as much so as I was expecting.
I am going out to buy the CD tomorrow!!!

There's nothing wrong with the Darkness. Nothing at all. They're funny. They live as if life's one big joke, and with their music they let us all in on said joke. And I saw some performance somewhere and it reminded me of performances I've seen from the 70s and stuff and that Woodstock video ive got, whassisface's outfit looked to me like the stuff the fella from the Who wore at Woodstock. (I honestly can't remember his name and I DONT KNOW WHY!! I LOVE THE WHO!!) but yea, they said in an interview on MuchMusic...
'Over the past year or so, the people's perception of rock has changed. We see rock now as some guy with his hat on backwards rapping into a mic. Thats not rock. What we do is rock, and we want to bring back this ideal of rock'

I have to disagree here. While I think some of their material sounds a little Queen-esque, I'd hardly call them a ripoff act. Queen was obviously an influence on them but I hear lots of bands when I listen to The Darkness: Def Leppard, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, among others. The whole "Theyre a Queen ripoff" seems to be a generic statement for those who don't really have a lot of knowledge when it comes to hair bands. "Growing On Me" which is my personal fave track on the album, and "Love Is Only a Feeling" are very Def leppard-esque, and the album's first track, "Black Shuck" sounds a LOT like AC/DC. While Justin Hawkins, their lead vocalist is slightly reminiscent of Freddie Mercury at times, I think The Darkness' sound owes a lot more to the legacy of late 70's/80's hair rock bands than just Queen.

Since I would assume most of you on here have never SEEN Queen like I have.Justin's voice may have a little upper register vibrato that Freddie had their music overall bears little resembalance.Alot closer to AC/DC and early Leppard.I'm not saying theyr'e reinventing the wheel, they're just a "fun" band something that this generation doesn't have while all the tuned down bands wallow in misery and anger playing "daddy hates me metal"while at the same time cashing million dollar royalty checks(ie:Staind,Disturbed,Godsmack etc.....)All of which I love btw it's just it get's old.

Nothing! That was my point. I was agreeing that we need more fun bands. I get sick of hearing songs where I can't figure out what the hell the singer is talking about because he's trying to be "deep." To bring a little "Talk Dirty To Me" back into rock n roll would be much appreciated at this point.

OMFG, I'm so damn tired of this band by now. Why? Well, I've been discussing this insignificant and completely pointless band on several message boards by now. On one board I was completely covered in flames by 13 year old girls raving about how brilliant they are. Girls that never even KNOW of the 70's/80's bands that this band is just replicating. So you wanna know why I think they are replicating instead of just being 'influenced'? Well, it's pretty obvious that they've been trying to incorporate all the elements of, I'd say, 80's rock. Not just the music but the outfits and the attitude. The funny thing is that would it be a couple of years ago no record company would even want to LISTEN to this, let alone sign them. Why do they sign them today then? LOL. Because the 80's is HIP again. Everything that people a couple of years ago just HATED is all of a sudden COOL. I don't buy that. I hated it then and I still do.
This is nothing but musical recycling, this is capitalism in it's ugliest form. You know, when many of my favorite 70's bands (i e Sabbath and Purple etc) had their reunions I hated it just as much. I can understand that they might enjoy getting together but it was damn obvious that record companies had some to do with it, because then the 70's was pretty hyped. I'm sick of all this trying to copy old concepts that are 'efficient'. I want something new. Evanescence proved to be quite special, they aren't replicating anything AFAIK.
Another thing I just HATE about The Darkness is this guy's voice. People claim to love it... but seriously! If he tried singing the falsetto at some point it would be quite alright but this moron does it all the time. Not very well either because he just sounds like a drunken hen. Nyah.
I'm tired of having this poop music shoved into my ears every time I turn on the radio or TV. I'm tired in having to hear everybody go on about how good they are. I just want them to leave me alone. But then again I'd be surprised if they'd last to make another album... but the record company will probably force them, because what matters with this band is the PROFIT.
Now feel free to flame me. I can't promise I'll reply because I'm so tired of discussing this topic all over the internet.

I personally would much rather see and hear a band like The Darkness doing 80's style rock than bands like Jet and The White Stripes trying to to bad soundalikes of Iggy Pop songs that weren't very good to begin with. Not saying theiy're the greatest band on Earth, but having grown up in the 80's and enjoyed hair rock the first time around, they're a breath of fresh air compared to the majority of what's on the radio now. They're no Motley Crue, but who is? ;)

I think everyone I work with (plus me) laughed our collective asses off the moment the single crossed my desk. I think it's truly godawful. And that catsuit needs to be burned.
Now.
Infact his whole collection of catsuits need to be shredded. Eugh. His voice his awful, the songs are cheesey...and for a "novelty" kinda band they take themselves way to seriously...

Yeah, I''m not much of a fan of that song or the video, the 80's died. I'm interested to see their next single, though, and see if they still have that similar 80's style.

One thing I don't like about music today, is that some bands are more concerned with making some kind of "statement" than with making their music. Bands that are more about their "image" than their music. People think it's so cool when a band goes out of their way just to say "fuck you" to the industry.
"Hey listen to us, coz we're punk and we're so anti-establishment (even though were on one of the "Big Five" labels)"
"Hey listen to us, because we defy all mainstram musical standards by singing badly and dressing tacky and doing corny sexual stuff in our videos."
But back on topic, I hate that song.

Why are you discussing it then? Move on...if it annoys you then stop clicking on Darkness threads. Sheesh.
My opinion: not bad. not great. it's ok but i find it hard to believe that this band will endure. especially his voice. you gotta wonder where a lot of these bands will be 10 years from now. like the used. great for now but you cant do that to your voice forever. correct me if i'm wrong but didnt the lead singer of the darkness get a throat infection on their last tour from singing freakin falsetto all the time?

First of all. People talk about this band everywhere. They are played everywhere too. There's really no escape. So I hope they DIE soon. Or at least break up their band.
...and if you're correct about him getting an infection it's probably because he knows shit about how to sing falsetto. Not that I'm the falsetto guru - I usually avoid doing it if possible - but it's extremely important to use your voice the right way when you do it or you might ruin your voice completely. But, on the other hand, if it might make him stfu then it's just as good :P

I have to say, The only thing good about this whole band is probably the guitar. Guitars are pretty damn good! Justin sounds like he's at an opera concert. YOUR SINGING ROCK MUSIC MAN!!!!!
The darkness are fantastic. great on record, great live. all fantastically talented musicians. rock music doesnt just mean hairy men shouting all the time. i thought youd have realised that already by being a fan of ev. they're puttin the fun back into rock and challenging those muppets who only have a three chord range on their guitar. they deserve all their current popularity because they've worked so hard for it. im glad they're gettin all they wanted and i say good luck to them

I understand why many of you dislike the darkness, it does seem quite campy and cheesey, as many have stated. However, it could be worse, much worse. Bands such as Seven Mary Three, who seemed depressed for no reason at all, brought down alot of the early '90's bands (I try to stay away from using monikers like "Grunge", which can be used to try to minimize a band. Pearl Jam is a Great band, one that shouldn't have to deal with being associated with a trend). Now, this is just my opinion, and just because some of you might like this band or that band and I may not, doesnt't mean that we can't get along as people. It's just a band, not world peace. Again, this isn't the gospel, just my thoughts. And remember, everything has a place under the sun, no matter what "genre" or "trend" it might be linked with.

Well, I'd argue that the sudden spotlighting of grunge (really just a proto-alternative blend of punk, hardcore, metal, and blues -- and not necessarily in that order) by major labels is what did in the "trend." One of the great ironies is that Sub Pop owners Bruce Pavitt and Jon Poneman sold an image. Seattle wasn't even a blip on the indie scene radar outside of Mudhoney, but Pavitt and Poneman created this whole msytique. If only twenty people showed up for a show they made it seem like two hundred did. They made a homogenous scene out of something that wasn't very big or homogenous. The Seattle scene was never as big as DC of LA, or even Chicago. Not during Sub Pop's reign, anyway. Pavitt and Poneman sold their product so well that they dug themselves into a hole when they bands jumped ship for the majors because of their sale tactics. Sub Pop nearly died in the months after Nirvana's release of Nevermind.
What followed obliterated the indie scene. Everone looking to make it "big" moved to Seattle (swelling the scene beyond recognition) or shifted into a "grunge" sound. Ian MacKate put ti best when he said (and this is a paraphrase) that before Nevermind people were talking about music and ideas, and that afterwards people were talknig about mnoey and deals. It changed the nature of the game, and it took a bit for everything to return. Hardcore reasserted itself through the old stalwarts in DC, but also in the proto-metalcore of the East Coast and the Gravity Records scene in San Diego. Indie rock split off from hardcore for good and settled into the more ironic music of Pavement and Liz Phair.
The sad thnig is that it's happening again. Independent music is again commercially viable, and it's starting to rip both hardcore and indie rock apart again.

NewKerala.com is reporting that THE DARKNESS singer Justin Hawkins verbally abused a fan after he mistook her for a music critic.
According to the Sun, 17-year old Sarah Hartnett flew all the way to Los Angeles after she won a contest to watch her heroes at a small gig.
But she was left stunned when Justin stopped the gig and blasted: "Seriously, fuck off, I don't want you in here."
Hawkins kicked off when another fan pointed to Sarah and shouted: "She's from the NME."
But he soon realized his mistake after the woman said, "She's not from the NME, she won it through the NME." He then apologized and offered to sign her T-shirt.
"Oh crap, I'm sorry, I just didn't know, we've had some trouble with the NME and stuff," Justin said.
"Justin was very sorry for his outburst. When he realized she was a fan he searched for her and apologized and offered her some free merchandise. It wasn't as bad as first thought," THE DARKNESS spokesman was quoted as saying.

I liked The Darkness as soon as I first heard them. Campy, hell yes they are. I need a good laugh every now and then.
Still, Justin reminds me of Freddy Mercury with his flamboyant attitude and amazing falsetto. I totally adore Queen. Although Justin is no where near the talent Freddy Mercury was he is a charismatic frontman. I like all the cheesy 80's bad video humor present in their videos too. They are funny and that rocks in its own right  .

For songs such as "Get Your Hands Off My Woman" and "Love On the Rocks With No Ice," The Darkness were honored this week as as the Ivor Novello Songwriters of the Year. The Novello Awards are annually given to British composers.
and...
In other Darkness news, the band claim to be finished recording their sophomore effort. Speaking to XFM in England, singer Justin Hawkins said, "The difficult second album? We’re sailing through it, it’s done, its ready to go. The whole thing's done. All the packaging and stuff - the artwork and what have you - is all we’ve got to look at now." Super-producer Robert "Mutt" Lange has been working with the band on the new material. The Darkness are currently deciding on a tile for the disc. Bassist Frankie Poullain quipped, "There’s an old title that keeps on asserting itself, and that’s three words: 'Short Fat Cock.' As we don’t know the length of the album yet we may have to just sit on that one. Not sit on it literally, of course… that could be quite painful."

i think the problem with the darkness is they seem really arrogant. but i just find it funny! they became "fashionable" which sucks because that means as soon as they go out of fashion people start hating them! so fickle! they're my local band so i'm sticking by them! they're from lowestoft which is very near my home town!
also, lots of people hate ev (strange people!) but that doesn't stop me liking them so i dont feel like i should hate them because all their other home town fans have disowned them! justin's sound is very strange but not unique! if you mock him then mock all the other's who went before him!!!!!!

Like it or not, The Darkness have got everybody talking, which is surely the idea, any band that is big has people who love them and people who hate them (Ev being a prime example).
I personally think they are brilliant, they take their music seriously but they do it in a way that people think they aren't serious.
And any band who can write songs about pubic lice (Growing on me) and masturbation (Holding my own) seriously, go and listen to them if you have the album, is ok in my book!!

I 100% agree, Alexvance!
I'm going to repeat myself here, but evanescence doesn't understand The Darkness.
As much as I love Amy, she contradicted herself. She said she liked Tenacious D, but she hates The Darkness because they are a joke band and artists get "pissed" because their music isn't "from the heart" and they don't care about their music blahblablabla.
Uh.
Tenacious D is a band with silly lyrics that "spoof" old rock n' roll bands.
Um.
JUST LIKE THE DARKNESS.
See, I don't understand that. If The Darkness is a band that makes money for "not caring" and being goofy, wouldn't Tenacious D be doing the same sort of thing? Buh?
I guess she can't tell the difference because The Darkness is more subtly witty with their humor, while Tenacious D is more of a typical goofy bum-bum joke band even your five year-old sister can laugh at.
And The Darkness's music isn't "from the heart" just because they aren't tormented and angsty?
Sheesh. I hope Justin reads that comment and stands up for himself and his band.

Well...I'll have to disagree with some of you, cause I like The Darkness! Their songs are really catchy. The lead singer does need to brush his teeth more often.. that's for sure. But back to the music... The music is good. I've gotten both their albums. Are their videos are very funny, which I like. I love the video to Is It Just Me?. I thought that video was one of the best of the whole lot they've put out.
