It was! I had it all planned out on how I was going to get there too. Because it was a 3 hour drive. I wonder if they're gonna have it next year. But with ticket sales so bad this year, I won't be surprised if they don't.

Now this was funny, kinda off topic, but funny still. So I'm doing my normal routine on the PC when Girl, Anachronism comes on and I start singing along, I start in on "in the time it takes to break -up she could make-up ten excuses..." and that little "ah" after it, when I shouted that I scared my dog away, lol.

Found a recent interview of the Dresden Dolls. It's on FMQB.com
The bolded stuff is the interviewer.
Interview: The Dresden Dolls
By: Joey Odorisio
It is safe to say that there’s no one else out there in the music world currently doing what The Dresden Dolls are doing. Combining a Punk Rock work ethic with German cabaret influences, the Dolls have created a world all their own. I recently had the chance to speak with singer/pianist Amanda Palmer about the band, their music videos, their unique live shows, and much more.
How are you doing?
I’m doing great. I’m presently a couple towns outside of Boston. We’re off tour right now.
Can you start out by explaining the origins of the band for our readers?
We met a Halloween party at my house, sort of like a salon. I would throw these wild performance parties and there’d be a lot of bands and dancers and comedians and freaky stuff happening. At this particular party [drummer] Brian [Viglione] was dragged along by a friend, he’d never been to the house before. I played a solo set at the end of the right (probably five or six songs or something like that) and he saw me play. He approached me at the end of the night. According to him he had this giant epiphany, but he played it very cool. He came up to me and said, "How’d you like to get together and put drums to this?" Which was fine by me because I was in the market for a drummer at the time, I was looking around. It was just fate. We got together about a week later and tried out some stuff in his rehearsal space. I think we knew within about 15 minutes that we’d found a key to happiness. We totally… it was just insanity. We jumped up and down and couldn’t believe that we’d been lucky enough to find each other.
Did you always have it in mind that there was just going to be piano and drums?
At the beginning phases of the band we sort of started to expand, and I didn’t think that was going to be the end, I thought we were going to probably add something. We played one of our first gigs with a cellist, and it certainly fleshed it out. We found when we added bass and guitar and played half the set as a duo and half the set with the bass and guitar…the best part of the set was always when we were just doing our thing as a duo. The more we played, the more that sort of made sense because we just got this really distilled, focused energy on stage. The live show is very much about Brian and I being completely in synch with each other, and paying such close attention to what the other one is doing that there’s not really room for other people on stage, so we just keep it simple.
The piano as a lead instrument is really cool. I’m a big Ben Folds fan so I like the really rockin’ piano, like on "Girl Anachronism." Was it just the two of you on the album too?
There’s a couple tracks on the album that we added bass and guitar to. "Gravity" and "Good Day," and "The Jeep Song" have full-on production. The songs sound fantastic live in duo format so I think probably our tack on the next album is going to be to keep it simple.
I read you’re already working on new stuff with big time producers from Pablo Honey and Live Though This, right?
It’s true. [Sean] Slade and [Paul] Koldeire who are like this folklore-ic, awesome producer/engineer pair. We had a pre-production meeting with Sean last night, it was awesome. They’re really laid back and cool, musician-friendly guys. They’re not at all kind of the stereotypical, big-time producer sort. They’ve done some really cool projects over the years. They did the Pixies’ early stuff and they worked with Dinosaur Jr. They totally get what we’re going for, which is key.
The first time I heard you guys… someone sent me the "Girl Anachronism" video online. It was such an insane, crazy video, and now the new video is online and there's definitely a buzz about it
Have you seen the new video [for "Coin-Operated Boy"]?
Yes, I saw it a couple times.
We tried to do something that was certainly as silly as we could muster.
The videos are really fancy and intricate and they have this whole little world to them. How much work goes into creating something like that?
A lot… although we work totally independently. Both of the videos were scripted by me. We worked with the same director who lives downstairs from me and both of them were shot completely in my house. If that gives you an idea of where I live and the kind of place I come from. It’s a lot of pre-production and then the "Coin Operated Boy" video, for instance, was just four solid days of 10 in the morning to Midnight, working non-stop. It’s grueling work, but it’s also insanely fun. The crew that we had on the video -- since Michael Pope, the director, is this totally indie, self-made, self-taught film maker – the crew was just cobbled together from people we had used on the last video, to people we found through the Internet, to fans of ours who had film experience coming to volunteer. It was a total, awesome, anarchy, ragtag group of folks. You can feel it in the video. You can sort of see that there’s no one there that’s expecting that this is going to be a big hit or that it’s going to get played on MTV or that the band is going to be the next Britney Spears. Everyone is literally just psyched to be there and have a good time.
"Coin Operated Boy" is the new single, can you talk a little about the song?
It’s funny. Brian and I were just talking about this last night. That song… we were talking about our old, pre-production for the first album and how we had three sets of songs: the songs that were definitely going on the album, the songs that we hoped would make it on but we weren’t sure about, and the songs that were at the bottom of the list that were "maybe" but we’ll give it a shot in the studio and see how it comes out, probably not. "Coin-Operated Boy" was on the probably not list, which is hilarious now because that’s like the major hit with our fans and it’s like the flagship song for the band practically. I wrote it as a joke. Then I realized that this song actually (even though it’s hilarious) has a really personal meaning, so I wrote the bridge to focus attention on the fact that it’s actually a really sarcastic song about a very deep emotional problem. I think that’s what makes the song work. It’s this totally silly cabaret song on the one hand, and then all of a sudden it makes reference to itself as this song about someone who fears intimacy. It’s a lonely song when you think about it, but it masquerades as a sing-along Pop tune which is totally fine with me.
You’re going on tour overseas next?
Yes. We’re leaving on Friday for a two-week European tour and then we come back and we tour the States for six weeks.
Have you done much touring over there? Do you have a following over there yet?
Yes we do. We’ve only done a few shows in France and Germany, but the buzz on the band is huge so we’ve already sold out a bunch of the shows. We’re really looking forward to it.
I read your journal on the web site and you wrote about these various performers who were at your shows. Are they the opening acts, or do they perform during the show while you guys are playing?
These are people who just show up and stand up as living statues in the club as people are hanging out before the show starts. When we get organized, sometimes these people actually perform on stage; they perform in between acts. At the last tour we had some really cool stuff. We had great burlesque strippers and guys walking on glass and puppet shows, and all sorts of crazy shit. It totally depends on who comes and who brings what and who wants to do what. We try and set everything up.
You guys were supposed to be a part of Lollapalooza this summer. What’s your take on what happened with it falling apart?
Well, there’s two questions. How I personally felt about it, which was that I was really relieved. We hadn’t had a rest, and going on Lollapalooza was going to be this really long, daunting, insanely hard tour for us travel-wise and time-wise. Even though we were psyched to do it, when I found out we were going to all of a sudden have three solid free weeks of time to do what we wanted, I jumped up and down for joy. Although, I really regret that we didn’t get a chance to see a lot of those people play live; I’d never seen a lot of the artists on the roster and I was really looking forward to that – so that was a major bring down. I think the tour itself fell apart from external and probably some internal reasons. The ticket sales were really bombing and, as I’m sure you know, ticket sales across the summer just tanked. The bill was risky, it was challenging, and this was just not the summer to put together a challenging bill.
I read that you recorded a cover of Black Sabbath’s "War Pigs" and you were going to try to put on one of the Rock Against Bush compilations?
Yeah, it didn’t make it onto the compilations, but we’re releasing it as a U.K. b-side, and it’s fantastic.
Since you're from Massachusetts, should I ask you about John Kerry at all?
I can go on the record saying that he’s not George Bush, and that’s definitely a pro. I met John Kerry when I was in junior high school. I asked him how he felt about the legalization of marijuana. I don’t remember the answer, which says something about the state of my mind in junior high school. I think it’s beautiful watching the creative ways that people are getting the word out. We’ve been registering voters at all of our shows. We can only hope for the best.
What cool music have you been listening to lately?
I’ve been really digging… there are two things that stick out right now. One is The Decemberists. I just got their new record, and I think they’re brilliant. I got a chance to check them out a couple of months ago when I came through Boston, and the show was just fantastic. And, there’s a gal named Regina Spektor. She just got signed and is putting her album out online. She is the most brilliant new performer that I think the world has offered up. I can’t wait to see her touring and really getting out there. I think she’s brilliant.
I saw Regina open for the Strokes last year.
That’s a tough opening slot, and I think she weathered through it. Someone sent me a record of hers, and I just flipped out. I think she’s something.
Thanks for chatting with me today.
Yeah, thanks so much. Bye.
Following on that Coin Operated Boy tip, here's a radio programmer's feeling about the song: "It's a smash! Easily our top requesting song on the station. Since I've been here we've never had a record react like this on the station." - KRBZ/KANSAS CITY PD LAZLO
These guys very well could be the wave of the future.

Besides Girl Anarchronism and Coin-Operated Boy, both of which I loved long before I got the CD, I'd have to say my favorite is Good Day. But the whole CD is great. I've been a fan of The Dresden Dolls for a while now, and they just came through the KC area last Sunday. It was an AMAZING show. They have so much energy, and the whole crowd was totally into it, even though they were the second band of four scheduled (PJ Harvey didn't make it but was scheduled to play third).
While I was disappointed that they didn't play Missed Me (one of my favorites), they did a kick ass cover of War Pigs.

It IS a lot of driving, but it'd be worth it! They should play a longer set in St. Louis than they did here in KC because they'll be headlining that show. It also seems that they traditionally hang out afterwards to sign stuff, from what I've heard.

I really like some of their songs, I heard Coin Operated Boy and Girl Anachronism and went out and bought the album. I'd say I like Half of it.
One song that bugs me is Bad Habit, it sounds so awesome but the lyrics, there should of been a moral or something at the end, but instead it just seems like People just care about themselves and won't look at me and what I do to myself.

BUt you're missing the point. The song is written in that context but think about it. IT's a Self-contradictory Statement and the epitome of how most people think when in that sort of low. "And You might say it's self inflicted you might say it's self destruction but can't you see it's more productive than if I were to be happy?" Bad Habbit is one of the songs that Made me love the Dolls.

For any Dresden Dolls fan I'd recommend strongly to get ahold of that DVD. I luckily found my copy at a local Borders. Since making it to live show is near impossible for myself this DVD is quite a nice companion.
Interesting Pre-Show, to say the least. I mostly enjoyed the girl in white's visual performance for Half Jack and naturally host Christoper Lydon.
It seems from watching the DVD their self titled debut studio albumdoesn't do them justice (and its a great CD, easily in my top 10). To see them play off eachother is like nothing else, full of passion and energy - amazing. Just two people on stage playing music. No gimics, flashing lights, just them watching eachother, building momentum, and just blowing you away. Crazy, chaotic, energetic, and just tons of fun. Its a powerful collaberation and probably one of the most unique music experiences/band that I've heard/seen in a long while.
Anyone who remotely likes their music, needs this DVD. $6.99 on Amazon.

Dirty Business is amazing. Though it's not exactly new. Most of the songs on "Yes, Virginia" are songs that the dolls have been playing live for some time now. But a lot of people haven't heard them, so It's a good thing they've recorded them for an album.

Yes, Virginia is the top selling new release!
SOPHOMORE ALBUM YES, VIRGINIA SCORES!
RANKS AS TOP SELLING NEW RELEASE ON BILLBOARD'S TOP 200 ALBUM CHART
TOUR WITH PANIC! AT THE DISCO THIS SUMMER
NEW YORK, NY - The Dresden Dolls are on fire. Their sophomore album Yes, Virginia is the ..1 selling new release in the U.S. this week as the album debuts at ..42 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart with 19,000 albums sold. It also charted in the Top 10 on the Top Alternative chart, ..1 on the CORE Alternative chart and ..2 on the Top Internet chart. Yes, Virginia, is the follow-up to the 2004, critically acclaimed self-titled debut, which slowly built from selling 275 copies first week to a total of over 100,000 copies sold in the U.S. alone. The Dresden Dolls just completed a successful run of special appearances in select markets throughout the US, including a much buzzed about show at Stubbs during SXSW in Austin, TX and a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The band will tour North America this summer as the special guests on the Panic! At the Disco Tour.
YES, VIRGINIA is a sheer rock opera minus the bombastic guitars. It thrashes tempestuously from one emotional tenor to another, recalling in no small measure the grandiosity of glam-era Bowie and Queen, but is clearly informed by a post-punk sense of strident dynamics, says SOMA Magazine. The album which has also received critical acclaim from Blender, Entertainment Weekly, Elle, Seventeen.com, Stuff Magazine, Jane, Alternative Press, LA Times, Spin, The New Yorker and more, features the exceptional premiere single Sing. The track has been praised by the likes of OUTBURN Magazine, who said on the unexpectedly uplifting and inviting closer, Sing, Palmer proclaims Life is no cabaret acknowledging the Dresden Dolls Vaudevillian appearance while simultaneously showing that underneath lies a pair of confident and ambitious musicians.
The album was ..1 most added and a top 10 record on the CMJ 200 and ..1 on FMQBs Alternative Chart. The single, Sing is getting stellar phone reaction at many Modern Rock stations among them KDLD (Los Angeles), WCYY (Portland), WFNX (Boston), WXRK (Cleveland), KRBZ (Kansas City), KEDJ (Phoenix), CD101 (Columbus), KROCK2 (NYC), WLIR (Long Island), WVGS (Las Vegas) and many, many more.
Additionally, the video for Sing which premiered on the MySpace.com homepage, has been receiving spins on MTV2, Fuse and MTVu.
The Dresden Dolls singer/pianist/lyricist Amanda Palmer, who has been called one of the most powerful and smartest songwriters in rock by Seventeen.com and drummer Brian Viglione, whose drumming has been called fearsome by The New Yorker, are currently touring overseas but will hit the road with PANIC! AT THE DISCO on June 27th when the tour kicks off in Washington, D.C. The duo will also be playing Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN on June 17th and Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL on August 5th. The Dolls live shows are the stuff of legend, drawing rave reviews worldwide and a recent cover of the touring magazine, POLLSTAR.

"My Alcoholic Friends" cracks me up. My favorite part:
"I'm taking back the number of the beast
Cause 6 is not a pretty number
8 or 3 are definitely better
A is for the address on the letter
To my alcoholic friends
I'm trying hard
Not to be ashamed
Not to know the name

"The Dresden Dolls' Companion Song Book is Coming –
After years in the making, The Dresden Dolls' first songbook will be arriving in late June. ABOUT F*^&ING TIME.
This extraordinary approximately 200 page book contains tons of never-before seen color photos of the band throughout the years, sheet music/guitar tabs from the band's debut record, The Dresden Dolls, and extensive insight into the song-writing, song-meanings and process by which the record was prepared and recorded. Each page of sheet music has scribbled extras and suggestions hand-written in by Amanda. The book is bound with a strong spiral binding so it doesn't snap shut when laid on a piano, because Amanda knows how annoying that is. The Companion also includes a bonus video disc containing an 20-minute intimate and impromtu interview with amanda in her kitchen during the creation of the album artwork." The Songbook will be available in late June. At $40 this will be a collectors item for musicians and fans alike."
I'm gonna order it mainly for the extras. Who knows, maybe the sheet music will give me the boost I need to learn guitar.

Btw I know what you mean about changing their sound. The actual songs aren't different, but the quality of the recording is different. I swear they've bought the drums up higher, and it just generally sounds more professionally done. I liked how their self titled album sounded almost home recorded. Especially 672. That song is great. Great to the max.

I see what you mean about them having upped the Drums and such. And the songs on Yes, Virginia are generally different than those of the Self-Titled.
I really think that the Self-titled had almost a childish mindset and Yes, Virginia's got a vey Teenage kind of mind-set now. I'm eager to see if the next album will have an adult sense of thinking.
By the way, if Anyone is looking for Sheet Music, this group has some for the following songs...
Backstabber
Sex Changes
672
Coin-Operated Boy
Slide
Missed Me
Girl Anachronism

I just figured that it would be better to give these sheets out since the book is taking for-fucking-ever. Late July now. *emo-tear*
Anywho, I'm not sure who did most of the transcriptions. I mean, I used to have her site I just can't remember her name. She shut it down in January. And Backstabber and Sex Changes just kinda happened on the site. No clue who did them.

I really don't see how the second album is more Commercial.
Honestly, I think most people draw the commercial comparison because the second album just sounds different to the first.
And I'm sick of people Ragging on Sing. It's a good song. Just because it sounds different to what the Dolls have done before, people freak out. That's what the Dolls are about. They change their style, write whatever they want whenever they want and dont' care what anyone thinks.

For the record, I'm not ragging on Sing. Im just saying its different from the rest of the album. Which it undoubtably is. I just think the second album's more commercial because DD had Missed Me as some bizarre musical peadophilic strip tease, and Girl Anachronism, which has been described by people I know as "Weird Atonal Jazz", "Piano metal" and "just fucking trippy".
Also, all the songs on Virginia are also of average length (3-4mins), where as DD had Truce (clocking in at 8:34) and 672 (at 1:24).
I think Amanda'a voice is a lot stronger on the second album, which probably adds to a more professional feel.
Tbh, its mostly based on a gut reaction. First time I listened to DD, I was speechless for about an hour. Same thing next time. I'd not heard anything like it before. Virginia was like most other albums - i was a bit underwhelmed when first listening to it, but after 2/3 plays i realised how awesome it was. I honestly think it stands up to repeated plays more than DD does.

07-09-2006, 02:14 PM
Since i just picked up the first album i know what you're all talking about a little more. I agree that they're different, but i could never pick favourites, i love them both. I see why people think that virginia is a little safer, but i think it still has its share of insanity. Like mandy goes to med school, that is one insane song. I played it for a few people, the reaction of one was WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT. I couldn't stop laughing for five minutes, good times.
And i don't mind sing personally. I like that the dresden dolls are changing with their albums, maturing musically if you will.
By the way, slide owns all.

I'm listening to Yes, Virginia again...I think my favorites are Delilah and Mandy Goes to Med School.

The show was great last night. I was sweating like a pig even before the show started, it only got worse when the Dolls hit the stage ;) We didn't get the Britney cover since the guy from Panic was busy but we got more songs since the other band wasn't there(Hush sound). They played a great set mostly for Panic! fans but they got into it and seemed to enjoy the show. Way too many underage teenagers...
Setlist:(probably screwed up the order)
Gravity
Backstabber
Coin-Operated Boy
Amsterdam (cover)
Dirty Business
Half Jack
Girl Anachronism
After a 45 minutes walk to the FTBR venue, I didn't expect it to take that long to get there :( I ended up missing Part 1 of the videos but saw the rest. That Half Jack video was sweet, the alternate version to Sing is nice too and the Titler videos were just crazy. Check them out HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uCsODN0O6w)
Amanda said she was really happy with the crowd tonight and it wasn't one of the really bad nights. She was a little pissed at the Panic guy for missing the show but she said that there wasn't much you could do with a 19 year old lol They are both really funny and straight forward, every show should be like that. For those that read Amanda's dairy, we got a live version of her haiku ;) There was around 120 people at the FTBR show.
Setlist:(probably screwed up the order)
Perfect Day (Lou Reed cover)
New Song
I Don't Care Much (Cabaret musical)
My Favourite Things
Amsterdam(yeah again ;))
Science Fiction Double Feature (RHPS song) (with Brian on guitar)
Delilah(yes the DD song!!)
Mother (Pink Floyd cover) (Brian on drums)
Rainbow Connection (Brian on guitar)
Exit Music (For A Film) (Radiohead cover) (with Brian)
They only played Delilah because Brian broke a string, got piss, threw the guitar down and finished the song with the drum and ended throwing a stick in the crowd that I got :D After the song he told Amanda to play a long song so he could change the string and she asked us what we wanted to hear. So we got an Amanda only Delilah :D
I bought the FTBR TShirt and poster, got the poster signed ;), I wanted a tshirt at the show but they only had that clock one :( Maybe next time.

Sure, the lengths are more 'standard.' Aside from Delilah. But, Even so, most of the songs on The Self Titled were standard length, too. They just had a couple of shorter/longer ones.
And The Dolls just..aren't coimmercial material.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to see them when they came to Chicago not too long ago.
This band is so unique and interesting which is why I love them. When it comes to true musical performers this band takes the cake from their hilarious and thought-provoking lyrics to their stage costumes (Amanda's eyebrows rock my socks). To develop such an interesting sound takes talent, and this band has plenty of it. They definitely make it in my top 5 and I recommend everyone here listen to them.

I really love their songs, but i think of them as a mix of Jack off Jill and Kittie lol and that rocks :D

What part of Kittie do they have? I mean I like Kittie, but the Dolls are nowhere near that heavy musically and the Dolls lyrics are a lot better.

What..the..hell? Both Jack Off Jill and Kittie are a lot heavier than the Dolls. I can see a little similarity between the Dolls' lyrics and Jack Off Jill's, but that's about it.

Sorry to inturupt such a fascinating topic, but does anyone know the spoken words in Gravity? I'm sorry if this has been adressed in the thread...
I know she's saying the alphabet in the background.

There's only three tracks overlapping.
It Mentions in the Companion that they just recorded as Amanda walked in circles and said whatever came to her mind.
They did that twice and then she did the Alphabet to relate the Drunk Driving refrences.
I'm sure if you listen, you can pick them all out. Some of the quotes are great.

Really stupid:
I made Amanda and Brian in the Sims. They now have a child called Daisy and Brian works in the law enforcement career.
I love Brian. One day I would like to give him a great big hug.

Too many good songs. I love Sing, Delilah, Half jack and a lot of others.
They added a B-Side to the last cd on the MySpace profile.
