Think of a metal band. Any metal band you like. Now, remove the lead vocalist, and add opera singers. This is Therion. I wish I could come up with a better explanation than "Operratic Metal", but it's the best I can do. It's definitely something different than a lot of the other bands out right now. They have a bunch of song clips avaliable on their official site: http://www.megatherion.com/
Enjoy!

Oooh... a Therion thread! :) I'm a little surprised that no-one else has posted here. Fans of Nightwish (there are a few on this board) should also appreciate Therion - I know that I do.
Der Fellfrosch, do you have a favourite Therion album? Secret of the Runes would probably be my favourite, although it's a close call. The ABBA cover got extra points in my book. ;)

Therion fans!! This is unexpectable in this forum...
Anyway, this is another kickass band!! Great melodies, great vocals (literally)!! And they have the gift to turn an ABBA song into a awesome song!!
My favourite album is Theli: mixing of classical influences with extreme metal resulted in fantastic compositions!! Check it out!!

Total Therion fan here.
Their last production is really good. Though I prefer SiriusB to Lemuria....
Actually I think SiriusB is as good as Vovin, my total favorite Therion album.
Clavicula Nox is one of my all time fav songs. I dig it. And their cover of O Fortuna by Carl Orff is really excellent........so is their ABBA cover.
Johnsson is a really gifted musician. He really knows where he wants to drive us, in his universe of Fantasy. Really, great musicians, very original.
The only thing I dislike in his music are those Heavy Metal vox ala Maiden. I completely can't stand those and thinks they ruin the track imo. Thanks to God, there's no songs like that in the last album.
Great band.
Anyone got their DVD?

Therion = good band. Love their new albums.
They're releasing a DVD soon if I'm not mistaken. Any ideas what is going to be on it? I presume it will have a live concert, but apparantly it will also have a 'historical section', whatever that means :S

New album and live DVD coming out. I'm more interested in the new album though:
THERION mainman Christofer Johnsson (guitar/vocals) revealed during an interview with Metal Temple magazine's Ian Kaatz at this year's ProgPower USA (Sept. 15-17 at Eartlink Live, Atlanta, GE) festival that the band are planning a multi-disc DVD release, tentatively due in March 2006. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
Metal Temple: Have you started writing any new material?
Christofer Johnsson: "We have all the songs for the next record finished."
Metal Temple: Wow.
Christofer Johnsson: "We recorded enough material for three albums but only released two albums, so we have to catch up."
Metal Temple: Does the new material sound similar to the double disc ("Lemuria" and "Sirius B"; Nuclear Blast Records, 2004)?
Christofer Johnsson: "It's not a double disc, not to be picky. It is two different records but they were sold together as a double disc because not many people have that much money. It was way over-stocked by distributors in the U.S, so that's why they still have it. We didn't limit in numbers. For three months people can buy as much as they like. The third one was recorded in the same time frame, so it will be closer to these ones than to our previous records. That doesn't mean it will sound the same. We divided the three records upon different solo songs. We saved the more progressive ones for the third one."
Metal Temple: Oh, okay, that sounds really sweet. Do you have a release date for the DVD? Because I know that in the previous interview you did with Metal Temple, you said you were working on a live DVD.
Christofer Johnsson: "I am not going to say how many discs, but it will contain multiple discs and it will be out in March of next year."

I have Lemuria/Sirius B, and its (or they are?) amazing. Its also quite interesting that there doesn't seem to be one actual lead singer, but more of a choirful of singers, you don't see that very often, lol.
Hmm, I must find some older albums...

True, they don't really have a lead singer as such, just get random people to come and sing for them. Would be an awesome band to see live I think. That's what makes them unique, their combination of classical with metal.
As for their older stuff I would probably suggest either Theli, Vovin or Secret of the Runes. Therion have a lot of material out. They release a new album pretty much every year. Sometimes two :p

One of my favourites. :)
I like all the albums since Theli. They're amazing, incredible harmonies, incredible vocals, just fucking perfect. :)
And I like the "metal vocal" on the songs too. ;)
Can't wait do acquire the box. 8)

I just discovered Therion. I love their music! I think they're probably one of the most unique bands I've ever heard. I wish I would've found out about them sooner...

I played with Therion when they were here last Winter.
I was singing with a band called Black Sky at the time, and we opened for Therion.
Nice people.

THERION! Why wasn't there a thread made earlier?! =P
I love Lemuria/Sirius B and Vovin. But Sirius B would have to be my favourite album. I wish I could see them live, now that would be amazing. Sadly, I don't think it'll ever happen.

Vovin is my favourite, mmmm Sarah Jezebel Deva, yay!
Clavicula Nox is probably my favourite song. I've been trying to get my hands on Sirius B for a while now. Stupid lack of money!
