View Full Version : Thoughts about EvBoard

Hello all! I do not want to be a grumpy or to try to "nag" any of the members, but I would like to share with you some observations that I have seen over the last few months.
Not everyone knows me, I’m still one of the main posters on the board. Thanks to a job that I really only had anything to do about 40% of the time, I was on the boards A LOT. Along with my good buddies, I am a moderator on the boards and spent virtually hours here. I came to know and love so many people that it was my home away from home. We had some crazy times and some serious times. Being in front of a computer screen and not face to face with someone allows for the courage to be much more here than in "real life". We aren't afraid to be ourselves and truly be accepted for our personality and not our looks or who we are or aren't friends with. This is one of the wonderful things about the internet.
I have always said that one of the great things about this place is we are able to truly learn from each other. Age knows no limits or boundaries here. I have probably learned more from teens here than I have from grown adults! We encourage each other in times of need and lift each other up in times that we are down. I can honestly say that so many of you were responsible for my well-being two winters ago. If it weren't for me being able to come here and offer up my true fears without having to put up my strong front that I was forcing myself to walk around with, I don't know what I would have done.
Having said all that, I have really seen a decline in the quality of posts here on the boards. I am in NO way pointing any fingers at anyone, but I do feel it is time to bring it up. We are here to have fellowship with each other, encourage each other in friendship, and we share a common interest in Evanescence's music. Take a step back and come to these boards to look at them through the eyes of a stranger. Is this a board that has committed ourselves to encouraging others in our walk and to discuss Ev's music? Or has this board succumbed to the fate of so many others becoming nothing other than a "fan club" of i.e. Lord of the Rings. How do you think the band members feel when they come on here to see that the effort that so many people put forward to create a fellowship board has been wasted on completely inappropriate and unnecessary topics? My friends, these boards do not run for free. There is a lot of money spent to keep these up and running and I feel that if I were the one having to foot the bill, I would NOT be happy.
Again, please do not feel that I am pointing any fingers at anyone. But please take the time to think about your contribution to these boards. These are not just "any" boards. These are the boards that so many of us call home, and our home is in some serious need of some house cleaning! So many of the integral members of these boards have either left due to other obligations or simply gotten fed up with the quality of it and left. Don't let anymore go. I do not want to leave because of it. We all need to take the time to consider others, not just ourselves. Consider the administrator, the moderators, and your fellow members when you are posting. Is it necessary? Is it worth the space to say one or two words? We are all responsible for them.
Note: I am trying to start any arguments, in no way. That is not my intention. And I don't want to imply that every thread should be a serious one. I certainly take part in many silly ones! But the balance is way off kilter these days and I think we need to right it.

Two words: Well done.
I could not have said it better myself that was amazingly written and I have to agree with most of what you have said.
Your not the only one who has noticed this too. Ive also noticed these type of threads coming up on the board and a lack of Evanescence threads being made.
Lets hope your brilliant words have done the trick and we see some changes around here.
Well done Jerry! ;)

I definitely have to agree with GilMod on this topic
So many senseless threads have been made - and many of those threads do get locked. Another thing - we are here BECAUSE of the band. I think some people lose sight of that.
Good job GilMod on that awesome post

GilMod brings up a very good point. Theres been alot of things happening that shouldnt be happening. (people being extremely rude, bad attitudes, no respect for ANYONE) and thats caused a problem. Alot of great senior members of the board, dont post as much or at all now. I miss those members. Everyone on the boards should be albe to love one or another. When Amy or the Guys get online, they dont wanna see someone bad mouthing others, fighting etc etc. The band has said before they feel they have the best fans ever. Lets try to be even better.
Lets try to not to post pointless things. If everyone joins together, we can have the board running better than ever!
Gil, your thread makes me want to cut myself. :(
I hate my teenage high-school-angst-ridden life. :(

All I really notice these days is one or two good posts, but then a cloud of crap coming after it. If you've got something to add, that's great. But really, post count doesn't matter at all. When I look at users, the last thing I look at is the post count. So if you haven't got much to say, is it really worth it? Look at how many posts I have? What does that average out to? Like... 0.3 posts a day? Heh, the point is that when I have something to say, I say it. I don't flood the place with useless stuff. Then you have people that have been members for 5 mintues with 1,000 posts :)

i wonder if ppl expect to take their post count to the grave or something? look at since when i've been here and my post count. i don't give a damn about it. there are a lot of pretty darn good threads on evboard but sometimes they turn into the biggest bull because people get off topic and what not. the truth is that some people like you Gilwellian see this board as something that should be what it was made for while others use the chance of being "unknown" to mess with it. i guess there needs to be more maturity but that won't happen unless people "think" about things before they post. i say Amen to everything you have said Gilwellian and hope that things will get more serious around here now that we've started a brand new year.

Thank you very much for this post.
It's been a very strange year on this board.
People have been coming more than going and often, members who were a prominent part of this board to begin with have left...pretty much for good.
Way too much drama.
And I will take a good part of the blame for some of it.
I've made some mistakes as a moderator but for the most part, I feel that I'm fair.
The rules of the board still apply as they themselves are not only fair but are in place to help the board move along. If you're not cool with those rules, then don't post plain and simple.
Also, remember that we have the priviledge of the members of the band posting here. The people who don't follow the rules are the ones who take the priviledge for granted. I should hope that the band doesn't alienate us for those few that can't follow the rules of the board peacefully and respectfully.
You came here for a reason. The same reason that we're all here. Don't ruin it for yourself or anybody else.

Agreed. I've considered leaving a few times. It's not necessarily because of the useless posts. It's because of the lack of good posts about Evanescence. Believe it or not, the majority of the people on this board think it's uncool to post in the Evanescence forum. All of the put downs of the band (and the band's fans) need to stop. I'm not saying that I'm the most mature person on this board because I'm certainly not. But at least I don't get a kick out of making fun of the people on the board who DO like the band. When my subscription is over, I might leave the board. I'll lurk but I won't post. I came to the board for one reason. That reason is Evanescence. My interest in the board has dropped because of the fucktards on this board who make fun of the band (and I quote a letter that a member of the board sent to me from John) "because they need to feel special".

I think a significant part of the problem lies in that we've gone so long now without any new material. Evanescence has taken a reasonable amount of time in making their new album and I'm not complaining about it, but in the beginning there was all the undiscovered history about the band for everyone to find out, all the stuff about all the songs they had written before Fallen, and the general hype of the tour and album sales. Now, all that background infomation is filled, the threads on it are complete and done, and there's just not as much ev to talk about as there used to be. It's not anyone's fault. We're in a big lull right now with no tour and no new album yet, so the other sections of the board are what a lot of members stick around for. I would hope that people who enjoy the band and help provide content to this website would stick around and realize that things are going to go up from this point. All the people who came here to find out all about the band in a time when it was still easy to discover new things have pretty much filled their heads, and now have either the option to stay or leave, and that largely revolves around the general community atmosphere aside from the EvChat forum. Hopefully everyone still keeps tabs on Evanescence via that forum and other sources, but I think we have to be patient. This community will of course evolve in ways that none of us are able to fully predict. I think what we may have a lot of on the forums right now (though certainly not everyone) are people who discovered the band later, after their huge success, and they're the ones walking the halls of EvChat. There's not much for our original rabid music fans who were on top of the band from day 1 to do but twiddle their thumbs until something new happens, aside from reading a few articles here and there that come out in the meantime. The community has grown more and more huge, and the density of the insiders, proactive hardcore fans, and generally 'leet' Evboarders has decreased a lot, simply because of all the regular folks around here now. That's in no way putting down on new members who just heard the band and are checking out evboard, and not to try and make some people an elitist society. We should all be glad we like Evanescence and have a place like evboard to come together. People who were really hung up on hearing from the ESF type people and old schoolers with their unique brand of Ev passion are going to have to sift through a lot more these days to find it, but it's still there. And who knows what gems you pick up from unsuspecting members along the way.
So... it'd be nice for everyone to hang around for what brought them here in the first place. I hate to see good members go because they help enrich this place and make it the unique spot that it is. :)
I have to agree with everything that has been said on this thread.
I'll try to make better posts, and once in awhile, have some fun :) .
I will try very hard to write more in english and perhaps to give my opinion in some threads.
I hope that everyone think about what has been said. Because we're here for Evanescence and for support each other when we need. And I want to give a special thanks to everyone that moderate this board and, also, for the people that support this board. YOU GUYS ROCK AND THANK YOU. :)
Thanks for this board,.. this is like a second home for me!

all of the above is true.
especially what machinehead has said. EV is on the downlow right about now and we've run out of things to talk about. hence the massive postings in other threads other than Evanescence Chat.
i come on here to get all my information about EV, but i also come on here to speak my mind about various issues, whine, bitch, moan, and post my poetry.
Without evboard I would have never met so many AMAZING friends. it's like our own little EV community. It's great to talk to various people who LOVE evanescence but at the same time have their own opinions on different subjects.

Another idea I had on EvChat... I give Chris (Cfw828) a lot of credit for helping to keep that forum alive and interesting. His music industry whoring and projects like the song interpretation and the Anywhere But Home awards threads are good ways to help keep the interest in Evanescence alive as best we can. He does a lot to keep the forum upright during our low times. Everyone deserves some credit of course, but I thought it was worth pointing out. Thanks to Gil too for bringing up this thread and the points in it. Hopefully it'll help steer Evboard in a direction for the better.

I am still here, and still enjoy being here. And, I've keep my comments on the Ev part of the boards to a minimum just because I don't feel like rehashing points that have already been made. I offer those who just visit the Evanescence part to branch out to Completely off topic, Whine and Cheese, Introduce yourself, and (when you're ready) Debate. Also, if you really enjoy being here... I strongly recommend subscribing. It's a lot of fun being a smurf.
I know there's been some drama in the past. (& I even got caught up in it back in september). But I've tried to let bygones be bygones. That's all I can do. I'm still here and everytime i visit the board... I come with the attitude that I'm going to have a great time, rather than this is just a shitty place to dump on people.
So happy new year, all. & Let's make this a wonderful place. Please consider this when you're posting. Does your post rub people the right way? or are you trying to intentionally be negative and a "wet blanket" all the time? (sarcasm is fun when appropriate, but don't go too overboard). If you see something that is a problem... click on the "report bad post" button and let the mods take care of it. That's their job, not yours. Just make sure they have enough information to deal with the issue at hand. And if they decide to not do anything, just move on and pretend the negative stuff isn't there. This is a place where you choose to visit because you want to be here, not because you have to be here and put others in a shitty mood.
And when you're to the point where you feel you "have to" respond, take a step back, go exercise or run a couple of miles, and then come back when your mind is clear. (helps me when i'm in that sort of situation). It's not that big a deal. Neg reps are just little red boxes on the computer monitor. Nothing more. They won't kill you unless you let them. Also, it's very important to be open to constructive criticism when given by your peers here. I've may not like it when someone tells me that I'm wrong, but I've got to remember to not go apeshit on good advise. Take a step back if you're about to go postal.
Finally, let's all have a beer or highly caffeinated beverage from Starbucks and enjoy. Thanks Jerry (gilmod) for taking the time to post this thread.

I too believe that a lot of the nonsense is due to having no new material. I think some may also be contributed to the new users, and some of their lack of attention to details (i.e. FAQ, rules, etc). I will admit to my few and far between idiot threads, but what can I say, my cat TALKED! (and yes, he STILL has cooties...)
Anyway, I am proud to say I am a member here. I know that the board has a bit of a "rep" on other boards, and I try to pad it a little when other people find out that I am a member here. I do appreciate the fact that I am recognized around here, and that some people even know my name. That is a part of what makes this board so great, that even the smallest girl from IN can get worldwide comradery from fans around the world. I do agree that we need to "Police Ourselves", and try to be more important and influential with our posts. Not everyone cares if my cat has cooties, and I know that now. I think that we do need some flaky stuff, just not 50% flaky. Have some fun, but be smart.

In October, when I first found Evboard, I thought it was an awesome site. I still do. Iv met alot of cool people, learned alot of things about this forum and how it works. I do believe this is the only site iv ever been addicted to this much. Yes,there is nonsence going on here and there, but I learn to just laugh at it insted of taking things too seriously. (Although, yes there are things that should be taken seriously). I think this is a well ran forum and we should all thank our great mods for that. And also, the great members of this forum who keep this place alive.

This post was very much needed on here.
I rarely post in the Evanescence section. I just read, because there are bunches of posts filled with 5 year olds that can't spell. That's so... Well, it's said many times, but its the truth. That being said, I can't seem to be able to sift through 958540 pages of nonsense. I read the main post, maybe a few intelligent ones, and leave. I spend most of my time posting in the other sections of this forum. Even there, there are people who make no sense. I even rarely post there.
I love most of the people here, some irk me, but that comes with everything.
I just hope people actually take the time to read through that whole post, without getting "tired" and moaning about how long it is. Then they need to consider what they post. Period.
Haha- this is a cool board, n such. My favorite one. Normally, I go to boards, and just forget about it- but yeah, this is one is too active- but not overactive so i get lost- for me to leave. I think its a well moderated board too! So yeah, compared to other forums ive been to- this one uh...wins. =D
Also, uh, its really cool to have access to Evanescence info (and other band info) from a...pretty reliable source (even those evboard isnt really a press/media thing). And the people are great and and and...yeah, ya get the point. Haha, i think its kinda awkward- but still makes sense- lots of people are skeptical when i say that evanescence posts sometimes. Its hard to convince them. Oh well. I only wish i would get the news before anyone else so -I- could post about it. =p But ya, its still cool to see all the news and stuff posted in one place so i dont hafta search mtv.com, kerrang, blabbermouth, whatever else.
However, this may never stop- but im a bit bothered that people insist to post in year old threads that the band has made. Especially things are pretty much over and done with. Not a big fuss- but its just sorta amazing to me.
I really do like how theres Evanescence fans who also like Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, and those other bands people think Ev ripped from. That gets old- and i like the people here for not being like that.
To sum up- i like the people and fans, the band, the moderating (and mods), um, haha- pretty much most of it!

wow.......so true.
it was creepy how eerily accurate that post was. GilMod's right. the board's been/being overrun with pointless and aggravating topics, and it's getting a little old. the topics aren't all necessarily coming from n00bs, either. sure, there have been some, but i've seen some threads started lately by older members that are even more mindless than some of the threads started by n00bs.
i'm a frequent visitor of the board, and i love it, so my last wish is for it to be shut down do to something that we could easily do something about.

That was extremely well-put, GilMod, and it did need to be said.
I agree with the other people here who think that part of the problem is the increase of members and the decrease of good, new stuff to talk about. You have a lot more people who want to talk about things, and there hasn't been too much to talk about.
Yes, props to Chris for keeping it alive :) I really like seeing the stats on Ev and Broken as time goes along, and the ABH Awards are a lot of fun. As are the Ev Captions and Renderings threads.
You know, I actually took a step back a couple of days ago and was like 'dude, Katy, you're slipping.' I'm sorry for the number of posts that I've made that were unnecessary. I have a tendency to post like that sometimes, and it's a habit that I'm trying to break.
So, well-said, again. It's sound advice for every one of us here :) I love it here, and I'd hate to see things go downhill. Thanks again, Jerry..and happy new year :)
That post was incredibly accurate, Gil, thank you for saying what I think a lot of us have wanted to, just haven't.
I love this board, I truly do, for many of the same reasons that Gil stated in his post. I do not just come here for the Evanescence section, I'll admit, because lately, the "New Ev News" is just stuff I already knew, being repeated in a different word structure. I come here a lot for the people, and for the opportunity not to get judged because of who I am, how I look, my past, etc.
I have also noticed that we're slipping a bit. Yeah, me too, and I'll work on that. We're still an awesome community of people, just some threads have been not up to our standard of awesomeness as of late.
But that's to be expected, especially with the increase in new members, who aren't familiar with the rules yet, and don't know the best way to post.
I love being here, and it would really suck if this board ceased to exist, so people? Let's try to keep that from happening. ;)

That was a good post Gil. I've been a member of the board for almost a year now. I come here everyday to see whats new and to keep up with all of the threads. No one really knows me because I don't post too often, mostly because my thoughts on a subject are already posted by someone else and I don't see the point in repeating what everyone else has said.
I agree that the board hasn't been at its best lately, but I still love it and come here often. I also agree, that once the new album comes out, the board will definitely get better. There's just not too much to talk about now. This board has great members and I think we can definitely make it even better than it already is now! Even though I don't post as much or contribute as much as many other members, I still love being here, and I appreciate all the hard work that everyone puts into it. Its really cool that Evanescence has made so many different types of people come together to share their love for the music. I've learned a lot from Evboard and everyone here. Its a cool place :)

There was a few monthes where I didnt come on the board just cuz I really didnt want the drama of the board. Its not so bad now, or maybe Im just able to ignore it.
Im going to stick my neck out, I think the main problem with this board is something gil mentioned as a good thing. You are anonymous here, you say more cuz you dont have to look the person in the eye. Its amazing what you will say when you dont have to look them in the eye. I have a suggestion, before you post something negative about someone do a kind of test, see if its something you would actually say to someone if they were really standing there.
Also something that bugs me from time to time is the sarcasm, from everyone. Its funny at first, but after awhile it gets really old.
Above all else, remember this is supposed to be a place to forget the dramas of your life, not create new ones online.

The closer we get to the next album coming out, or maybe after it has been released I think there will be a big boost in the number of interesting ev-related topics. What with discussion about the new songs, debate about how it compares to Fallen, and then all the hype about another tour. Also with exciting things like the Electra and Narnia Soundtrack I think 2005 should be great for evboard. :D Just my thoughts and hopes...

Great post Gil , very well said. I totally agree with you and the other posts I´ve read here.
I joined evboard in June 2003 , and as you can see by my number of posts , I´m not a very " active " member , I don´t usually post , but I visit the board every day . At first , this place was like heaven for me , a place where I could share my love for Evanescence music , a place where I could be just myself and expressing my opinions , and people was so nice ( of course most of you " are" nice ;) ) .But then it began to grow and grow and grow... and I started to feel a litlle bit lost , so I left the board for a while ( but not many time because I realised how I loved this place ). I also think that some people are only worried about the amount of posts they make , because maybe this way they think they´re better than the others or something . And that´s not important for me , I prefer the quality over the quantity , you know , I think some people should think a little bit more before posting .
I want to start posting more and be part of this awesome place again. And I think I must improve my english to say all I wanna say !!! :p
Thanxs to all the mods and the rest of you that make this place possible , I´m sure it´s not an easy job.

this post should not be like "oh wow gil well said haha g'bye" or s/th:p , but well, it is well said.
I thought of this a few weeks ago, and i guess i also made those stupid posts, and i'm sorry for it.
Because like Nemo said, this is the best forum ever, and i love to be here.
i think sometimes its difficult to make ingenious(?) posts, because sometimes i can't really say what i want to say, in english..but this isn't often.
so...happy new year, and a good "board-year":D

K, I'm done. Racist? No. I believe "misogynist" is the word you were looking for. http://img35.exs.cx/img35/6663/grin.png

Excellent posts by everyone here. I just joined a few months ago, and I've been pwned (rightly) by the mods several times. However, I made sure to read all of the rules etc. before posting, so I haven't had any other problems. And I totally agree about people who just care about their post count. I only post when I feel I can contribute enough to the conversation to make it worth my while, not just so I can have more posts.

Having only been here a short time, my view on the board is pretty limited. I think the other forums have merit as a number of people have mentioned it keeps the board alive during the periods where there is not much Ev related stuff happening. I have found the Ev related forums to be a fountain of information and having the band members post from time to time makes it just that little bit extra special
From what I've seen and what Gil has pointed out in this thread, I would agree that the Completely Off-topic forum in particular, maybe needs a little direction, but that said there are some gems in there aswell.
However as a lot of people have said, now that there is an album in the pipeline, the amount of new Ev news will increase as the album release gets closer.
I think the mods do an excellent job considering the number of active users and the constant influx of new people.

hi
It was said wel and in time, but i would like to know what we all can do to change things
i've been on this board for less than a week. and i haven't come here as many of you have said (millions of times) because i had heard about evboard on DVD (I haven't still seen it, I am too poor to buy :( ) or because I knew that the band post here. I learned it all after I joined it. I simply wanted to find some EV fans in my area
second, having spent here a few days (all day long actually as i am trying to kill time waiting for my new job to start) I have noticed that the section about Evanescence music is MUCH smaller than about everything else.
It can be explained though: there isn't much to discuss at the moment as there's no much news. For now everything about Ev music has already been discussed. I have seen so many posts closed down for one reason: WE HAVE ALREADY DISCUSSED IT. So i think we just need to wait for the new album with patience
But still I was surprised how people more eagerly discuss anything but EVA: soap operas for example in UK section. Never thought I would find this stuff on evanescence forum. To me they sort of do not agree with each other (sorry fans of soap this is my pet hate: there may too much of them everywhere), sorry, i went off topic
Gil said there aren't many good posts now as there used to be. As a n00b I would like to know what is your (i mean all old members) idea of a good post. If there aren't so many of them now then how newbies can know what you mean saying "good" post. I am asking this not because I want to find a fault with you but because i want to take part in improving this forum. Maybe you can form a separate section where you can bring those good threads back so we can see them. Or even vote for the best one? :) if we can afford having several thread about soaps why can't we make one devoted to the history of evboard?

Occasionally we ban dickheads who are abusing our boards in some way. Due largely to the absolutely ridiculous amount of silly posts and comments as well as stupid discussions recently held, hereby I spread some ethical principles to observe:
The EvBoard Forum is a congregation of Evanescence fans of all ages and fields in the music scene. One thing that we all share in common is our good will when dealing with others. It is very important that we ensure our fair and polite treatment towards others when replying to someone's post. Remember, communicating via the Internet is somewhat tricky and text by itself can be misunderstood. As such, we expect you to post in an appropriate manner. Following these basic ideals and guidelines will assist in this process.
1. RESPECT. Have a baseline of respect for everyone. This must hold true for the simple reason that each poster must NOT be considered a faceless entity. Meeting someone in real life for the first time requires a certain amount of respect and time to "feel the other person out". This can be conveyed on EvBoard through verbal greetings, and taking the time to ascertain what kind of person is behind the avatar we choose.
2. PATIENCE. A little bit of patience goes a long way. Get to know the members, and what's kosher and what isn't. Many of us have known each other for a while, and like any other "new" person or situation, it takes a bit of time to get used to. Don't rush things!
3. HUMILITY. A bit of humility a day, keeps the EvBoard mods away! Cockiness, arrogance in small amounts can be considered confidence, but too much tends to rub people the wrong way. Be humble when asking for help, as well as be humble when giving it. Critiques and such are one way in which we improve, but it must be presented in a constructive fashion. Being humble will help in this.
4. POLITENESS. Anyone can be rude, but real evboarders are polite and courteous. Polite courtesy is something we have all probably found lacking at one time or place. This does not have to be the case at EvBoard. A little bit of effort on your part to be polite and courteous will not only ensure people interact with each other in a friendly manner, but it will set a good example for other members.
5. SINCERITY. Be true to that which you say. Often it's difficult to figure out what a person's meaning is based on their post. Sometimes it requires some extra explaining in order to ensure the meaning gets across clearly. Try to be as concise, honest and accurate as you can when you're posting.
Each of these points blend together to make up a code of conduct. They might all be utilized in order to maintain a good relationship with your fellow evboarders. This holds true in any social situation in life. Following these points will certainly make your visit here an easy, fun and enjoyable one.

Oh goodness, thank you, Jerry! The rudeness factor especially has become much more of an issue lately, and quite frankly, I'm shocked.
I'm only a mod for the Advice forum, but we Advice mods have seen astonishing rudeness and lack of respect towards people who are honestly seeking help with a difficult situation. It's ridiculous. One member was banned after FOUR POSTS in the space of an HOUR because of the awful attitude she had (outside of the Advice forum). I've seen more red-text posts from mods than ever before admonishing members who don't know the meaning of the word "tact," and that's sad.
So, to you members who love being nasty or just don't care...would you do that to your best friend? Favorite teacher? Friends' parents? Didn't think so. So what gives you the right to do it here? It doesn't make anyone like you, and quite often, you lose a ton of respect for YOURSELF because people see that you won't reciprocate their efforts.
Thank you SO much, Jerry; that badly needed to be said. Personally, I think that should go in the FAQ myself.

i completely agree with everything you've said jerry. i've been on this board quite a long time now and in my time i have been witness to lots of rudeness and people being complete dicks. people have been rude to me for no good reason and i admit i was rude back.
there is a lot of boredom posting going on and again i am guilty of that too. but thats because theres not enough to interest me or make me passionate to post. im not very good at finding something good to post about myself and i rarely start threads so im not sure how i can help.
i have also seen people using the threads more like an instant messneger service and i have done myself but then realised how trivial the convo was and could have been conducted elsewhere.
one thing i want to clear up is what to do when you see people doing someting they shouldn't. if its not major enough to contact a mod are we ok to tell them ourselves? in the past when ive seen a "normal" poster telling another user off they've been told to "stop pretending to be a mod coz you're not". so when i see something wrong im wary to tell the user incase i get accused of being a wannabe mod (and that has happened to me) as long as we're not rude or harsh about it, can we do some minor moderation?
how can i personally help to get the standards of the board up? it may seem like something really obvious but im just not sure.

Just report the post with the http://www.evboard.com/images/shady/buttons/report.gif button. People might mean well by trying to point out improper behavior by other posters but that leaves what is acceptable or not up to each individual which leads to way too much inconsistency. Additionally you're much more likely to get a hostile response back from the other user.

Your friends won't know that you were the one who reported them, plus I would think it's easier just to hit the report button. Sometimes, even friends, take offense when someone corrects them. By leaving it up to the mods, then you don't have to worry about any of that.
We're not saying that you can't disagree with someone, but it's a matter of showing them the same degree of respect that you would expect them to show you. It's the way people go about saying things is where the issues lie.

Exactly! You don't have to treat everyone like you're their best friend, but on the other hand don't treat them like their your worst enemy either. Common courtesy just needs to be a little more common.

Here's my two cents for what it's worth...
I joined in January 2004. I used to lurk and play those jigsaw puzzles (which are still found on www.exodusevanescence.com if anybody's interested) and look around. & I've seen my fair share of things happen.
I joined right when the Kryskubi03 vs littlefairydotORG thing was unfolding. I'm like, ok... so we got two girls that like to feud and stuff, here.
I stayed on and I met the people who joined about the same time as I did... piano-playin'-girl (now Trace), Twinklefairy (now ~Trish~), TheQueen, and a few others I can't think of right now (but you know who you are... ;) ). We're still here for the most part. I met a few people around, felt them out. I got to be friends with the first two mods who corrected my posts. I kept an open mind and that paid off by networking to some cool local Little Rock bands through them.
Time passed. After surviving some little shits before the mod queue went into effect, I got more comfortable here. Members came and went. Somehow, I got in the middle of gracedescending, Kris^ and Circle of friends drama. But, all that got sorted out. The assholes got banned, some people left on their own volition. Others stayed and we're closer, now more than ever!
Time passed. If a mod saw my rep comments / posts were rubbing the wrong way, I took that under advisement to make this a better place. April fools happened. No biggie. The paid subscriber store came and went.
Stuff's going on, still. Stuff I don't care about since I don't have a clue about until it hits fan via public posting... I no longer keep a 'roadmap' of which girl likes to fuck with the other, etc.
If there's something that I see as an issue, I click the "report bad post" button. Yeah, I won an award for that button clicking last summer... LOL, but I did it and nobody's ever complained to date about my reports (heh... except that one thing I was sort of off on).
Everything Gilmod said is really valuable to remember when posting here. We are all here because we want to be (Trolls don't count). If you're about to snap, just hit the "power button" or "close window" and think about your post before clicking reply. If you feel like demolishing somebody during a brief rage, it'll come back on you. Wasn't there a fortune-cookie something that said, 'you'll pay a lot for those 10 seconds of rage'?
You can make it here. I'm still here. Just come with an attitude that you're gonna have a good time, read Gilmod's post and you'll be cool on evboard.

Since joining this great board I've actually learned more about new tech stuff, and have been turned on to so many new bands, like Nightwish, lacuna coil, Within Temptation,Epica, and on..In honesty, I'm not Goth at all, I just love the music. Some people are now calling me Goth Garth(thats my name)and thats cool. For me a lot of todays mainstream music really sucks. I've been around music people all my life, enjoyed some great jazz, some early blues, and the 60's really were a great time folks. Now from the first time I heard Amy's voice and the power of the band I knew that maybe, just maybe we as a civilization were crawling out of the miserable hell we've been in musically since disco in the late 70's.I'm really excited that I actually play new music now and don't have to listen to Classic Rock anymore.Thank-you all so very much.
P.s For any of you that actually listened to Lost Frequency be assured we are moving in a much different direction on our second C.D.(More orchestrated theatre)
i joined in october 2004, but i had to wait (i was 12) and then in may i started to write here... but the f** crash erased my new account. and then i joined with Eli.
after this adventure I already started writing good and i become ps ... and I have met here wonderful persons, who are now my BIG friends. I think that this place is great, and you guys rock. only you can support my English ;) haha
I hope to remain here in a lot of time and this way support this great band called evanescence.

Hi there
You may or may not know who I am or even care but I think some comments need to be said.
I joined here in March of 2003 after lurking on the o-board and on notachristianband.com.
I was greeted and welcomed into the fold with some rules. I listened, lurked, and learned for a while before I started posting.
I went through all the flame wars, cat fights, pissing contests, and such. Fought my own fights and I came out of them somewhat smarter.
I started my own war when I went on a tear in IRC on the old server and banned some people. Maybe I was right or wrong in what I did, but to this day I don't deny anything. I have made friends and enemies, those of which know who you are. Either way you have earned my respect for your opinons whether they conflicted with mine or not.
I have wondered many times why I fail to post much anymore and I have narrowed it down to this, and folks please realize that I know I can leave if I don't like it or keep quiet or ignore the poster or subject or etc etc.
I have slowly quit posting due to this place seeming less like what we all are actually here.
We are a special group of people who like a band from Little Rock. Not like the other 4 million people who bought the cd. We are a small tightknit group of people who for the most part enjoy being friends with each other. I for one miss the old days of "If you don't like it here, LEAVE." Or the flame wars on ignorant people. I do know that will never come to happen ever again but I can wish for it. This place on occasion has reeked of populistic tendencies which it never exhibited before. Nothing I as one person can do to change that. Matter of fact nothing anyone can do to change it other than Ben.
Just saddens me to no end.
Final thought...Ben I would say thanks for spending time and money keeping this alive for these almost 3 years. Godbless.
Thanks
Kittencat

I joined a year ago, thinking this was just another forum that I wouldn't get attached to. Boy oh boy, how mistaken I was.
I remember that I joined IRC before I could post anything and made a few friends, despite the utter confusion caused by sarcasm (Yeah, I asked if we actually talked about Evanescence at all in there. Go me). But I remember EmmaTehGoat, Lessa and ScreamingLord being in there on my first time. It was hella insane, but so fun and addictive.
So when I got on, I made a few mistakes now and then, questionable threads that I just laugh at now. The good thing about this board is that they at least give you a chance to learn. Some people sound like they may never learn and get perma-banned, some get a tempa-ban, some get a slap on the wrist/stab in the face, whatever. But one thing is for sure, I have learnt so much more in this forum than any other forum, whether it be about Evanescence, working around the intraweb, tech help, art etc. Colby, you are correct about the friendship thing being a close knitted bunch. I wish for the day I can see all you crazed freaks!

As a member who rarely posts anymore...I must say that is well said. I have been "flamed" for posting my opinion because people forget that it is just that. My opinion. I post elsewhere. I come back here to read the nonsense that is posted here and keep my opinions to myself. Too many rumors are posted here and when I have attempted to clear it up, I was badgered because of it. So, please no more phone calls to my family. I will be quiet. We forget that this is a free country and we are entitled to freedom of speech. O, and before I forget, ban me if you must, but I will NOT respond to any PM's or emails to my private email address.

I've learned to get along on this board, once you get used to it it can be a very nice place to be, and that it is. Of course there are def gonna be some times where you break a rule but that's part of becoming more of a part of thge board and learning from your mistakes. I don't think that many people know me on the board, I'm not famous or anything like Katya, Scratchy, the Mods or Alarandiia, who all of them I look up to on here. But I get along, and I really enjoy it here, it's where I spend most of my online time. Thanks evboard.
Yes...Things most certainly need to change around here, and I am thinking about the best way to make that happen. Until then, please make sure you obey all traffic laws and wear your seat belts!

Hm. I think a change is always needed. No sense in living one way or doing things one way. IAW Colby on most things he said. What the board currently is, and what it was....theres a big difference. In some ways the older times are better, some way the newer times are better. The board is more of a worldwide fan base, more than a group of friends like Colby said.
so yeah. thats what I have to say. And im interested in seeing what Bens got in mind.

After reading this thread, out of boredom mostly, I agree with everything that was already said. Now, to give my two cents:
I joined in May of 2003, and I have yet to reach 1,000 posts. To me, it's the quality of my post rather than the quanity. I don't really care if I have a gazillion posts or anything. I'd rather post something that won't be considered useless than just something that will increase my post count. By the way, maybe I have posted the odd useless post, and for that I apologize. I do try my best, and will continue to contribute to this board the best I can.
I'm also not the most well known member here. This kinda goes hand in hand with the amount of posts I have, but I'd honestly rather be known as someone that is able to contribute to this board the best I possibly can via the quality of my posts, rather than the alternative, whatever that might be.
At any rate I love this message board, and everyone here, as much as I love my Flames. The mods have done a fantastic job in keeping this place running. Everyone here rocks!

Bob Fontaine may use whatever tense he prefers to use. One can't always be alive and kicking after a night of hooches and hooch.
You are quite the observant fellow though. You have passed Bob Fontaine's test. Thanks for playing :D

bob fontaine has been advised by his doctor/lawyer, "cherokee" klaus weissmeir MD at law, to always use the first person. it's the best way to approach the second and third persons and it keep his bloodsugar in check.

Simple solution: Just don't go into the Other Bands forum, if you only want to read and post about ev then just stick to the Evanescence section of the board. That's the beauty of being able to subscribe to different forums. Just subscribe to the forums you want to read and ignore the rest of them (other than of course the Important Information and News and Announcements). Then just set your bookmark to your UserCP and pretend the others don't even exist.

Down on your knees - sexual
Kiss my impolite ass - again sexual
Chickenshit - could be sexual if you are a sick person
goths - only types to have sex with.

I agree, I have met some amazing, amazing people and learnt alot but there is some people who bring the board down, forgetting there is another person on the other side of the screen who has feelings and emotions.
Some people on this board are just careless and there are deffinatly people who abuse their power and some who are on 'power trips'. But there are also a majourity of people who do their job and do it well!

If you are going to flame someone because they posted their thoughts and opinions in a thread titled "Thoughts About Evboard", atleast try to compose a sentence that makes sense.
As for my thoughts: Evboard is still a good place. There are a lot of users posting here, and a lot of crap. (Probably a lot of which is already filtered out by the time it reaches us common users.) This is why it is hard on the mods, and is why they have to enforce some harsh rules.

When there is a ban experience behind posts like those, they are not thoughts nor opinions but comments with a bitter background. You'd know better the motive of such before seconding meaningless words.

Hmm....I don't seem to ever remember a time where someone didn't get offended about one thing or another. I mean, how many pages into a thread does it usually take before someone has to make it go downhill around here? Not too many. Not everyone is always going to agree with everyone else. :p
What everyone needs to remember, is that this board is comprised of many different types of personalities and not everyone is always going to get along and that people ARE going to offended along the way. Sorry if I am taking this the wrong way, so just feel free to say something.
But one of the rules here is NO file sharing at all. It's illegal, and this is a fairly large board, and I'd like to think a fairly wealthy message board. And to top it off, it's the only board where the band posts, and Ben as well as everyone else have worked hard to keep it running. Wind Up does look at this site, believe it or not, and even though you aren't sharing Wind Up files [or maybe people are.] they are part of a much larger record company.
And you're right- you shouldn't be pretending everything is alright, but you won't have to if you don't break the rule.
The bottom line is, that rule has always been in place, people need to follow.

EvBoard helps me wind down from a 13 hour shift at work or dealing with my child who is still in her terrible 2's, even tho she's 4 now. I can check out the "my stuff" area and see the new work that has been put up. Whether it's a picture or a song or a poem/story, it helps me unwind. It inspires. Have you seen many posts from me in the past months? no i think not, only in select threads.
You say play nice but why don't you take your own advice?
Do you think making people out to be pathetic is playing nice?
When you come to post at a board you want to have fun other wise what is the point? You want to have fun with other people. Or did i not explain that enough in my other post?
And I am not Depressed or having a 'Depressive eppisode' I was expressing what was on my mind, but it seems thats a crime now.

Evboard is a complex place. You have to have a thick skin to exist here. That being said, we should all treat each other with common respect. And with that being said, it should be noted that there are exceptions for every rule in life. Life isn't fair. An internet message board is even less so. Looking for logical consistency on evboard is not advisable.
If anyone has any specific criticisms or suggestions on how to "improve" evboard, feel free to PM them to a moderator or post them in this thread. Sending a PM to a moderator is a way to avoid public flaming though.

Well, I'm a n00b, but so far I think EvBoard is a great place.
I've only made a handful of posts, and have received very welcoming comments and several positive reputation points. I have had the late shift at work, and have been gone for 3 days, and I come back, and there are pages and pages of interesting stuff to read. I fear I will never get to post because I will spend all my time reading what everyone has said in the past few days. How many message boards have this much participation? None that I have seen, and I think it is great!
Those who have problem with this place, and I do not want to single anyone out because I don't know anyone, well, just like in real life you meet people all the time. Some are nice, some aren't. Why should an internet board be any different? The good thing about it happening in cyberspace is you can just log off and go away when people give you shit. If only it was so easy in the real world to do that.
So, i hope I never have problems with anyone here, but if I do I can remember that
1) there are millions of people in cyberspace, and thousands on this board alone, and I am not going to let a petty comment ruin my day.
2) getting flamed for your opinion is not the end of the world
3) it is only an internet board that I chose to go on, and if I don't like it I can stop coming.
Thank you for reading.

I really liked what Bella said because for a n00b you really got things figured out! ;). I love this place (or I would not keep showing up as much as I do) and I do realize that it's not perfect. Yeah, I get pissed off at some things, too. Sometimes I click to reply to one of those posts and when I finish typing what I had to say, I don't end up submitting it, but instead I just don't post it because I realize that it's not worth the aggravation. I would also try to be more understanding during these times when we come here just to hang out and find other things we have in common, since there is not much going on that relates to Ev, yet!!! :p.
As far as opinions are concerned, when one feels that he/she really needs to get something out, then he/she should do so without being afraid. Don't worry about neg reps, it's not like they are what makes the world go round.

True, but reps are what makes mebers go round EvBoard. :p Enough neg reps and you can get automatically banz0red, right? Although one can get banned even with a bazillion pos reps, so I guess it doesn't matter that much after all.
But EvBoard is indeed a cool place. I remember first registering in January this year, sometime right after the 25th of the month, hehe. With about 220 posts and 10 green dots, imagine my surprise when I found out I had to start all over again and build up what I used to have. I'm not there yet, but what's important is that I didn't give up. Which is precisely because I like this place too damn much.
Oh, and if it weren't for EvBoard, I never would have met a person that I really love now. I am forever grateful. :)
EDIT: Thank you for the rep Fallon! <3

Yes but unless you're a straight out troll you'll never even get close to the amount of neg rep to automatically ban (if that even works anymore after the update). If you rep gets that bad odds are you would have been banned long before that anyway.

Ah, ok. Thank you for clearing that out for me. Funny how I still have a lot to learn about this place every day. :)

There is no flavour since we aren't based in Autralia or any of the other countries that stick supoerflous u's into words. It's flavor, and the flavor is a secret kinda like the mystery Starburst from a few years ago.

There is a lot of money spent to keep these up and running and I feel that if I were the one having to foot the bill, I would NOT be happy.
i feel the same way about this...i know i haven't been here for very long...and maybe i haven;t had the best most productive posts in the world...but i really do try...i want to be a part of this board-this family- and i feel that in order to do that...i have to be drop dead hilarious or a flat out bitch...i feel as though i am somewhat of an outcast...i don't know any of the inside jokes, the clubs, groups, or anything really that goes on here...i just read the posts, post what i think...and try to be as much of a contribution as i can...so i apologize if i seem like any kind of bitch or boring poster on here...and if i do..let me know...neg rep me...something..just lemme know...i want to take ya'lls feedback and help me grow as a poster and member of this board...if i am being n00bish in ANY way..lemme know...i try my best not to!!! thanks for listening to my pity party!!
...signing off...

I discovered this board in March of 2005, and fell in love with it immediately. Although I have not seen what the board was like prior to my discovery, I must say that I like the board for what it is.
The forum for Evanescence chat is always interesting to read, and it's great that so many kids/adults are posting threads about where Evanescence is being cited. It shows that the people on this board really do care about Evanescence and they want to extend their care to everyone else. I appreciate all the people on this board who do research and show it to everyone else.
The forum for other things not relating to Evanescence is one of my favorites to browse around too. There certainly is a range of serious to comical threads, and the balance seems about even. Most of the threads in that part of the board are ones that I find interesting. There are however a few particular threads in there (that I will not point out) that I feel or immoral and ought not to be posted. However, others may disagree with me and that is fine. We each contribute our own ideas and I respect that.
One of the things I noticed about people on this board is that everyone really seems to care about others, and put others in their concern. The advice forum is a great way for all of us to be ourselves, and talk to one another free from prejudice and stereotypes. I admire other EvBoarders for taking their time to really analyze a thread about someone's problems and responding with some useful advice or support.
With all that being said, that is how I hold my opinion of EvBoard. If you actually read all of what I said, then you are a true EvBoarder. :)

I really have no complaints about EvBoard. I first discovered it in 2004 and lurked (w/o becoming a member) for over a year before actually signing up. After joining and reading the FAQs, I had no real problems with using EvBoard and understanding the reputation system, what I can and cannot post, etc. And for the most part, everyone here is very open-minded and welcoming. And willing to talk about almost anything.
So those are my thoughts about EvBoard. I'm quite liking this place. ;)

I have no complains about evboard, either.
The board is much better then it used to be, and the moderators are having more control about people and they're posts.
The board is really cool (and beautiful) now. :D

I know I'm still relatively new to EB, and you probably wont appreciate my views.
...But you're going to get them anyway http://recuerdo.net2media.co.uk/fuckedup.gif
I personally feel that the rules on EvBouard are too strict. Members aren't granted as much freedom as is available on other boards, perhaps. I know thats the case for me. But then again the forum I frequent is by no means the same size, and is a lot easier to moderate.
I'm by no means saying I hate the place, or the way it's run is wrong. I co-Administrate a forum of my own, which has grown to be extremely popular with well over 4 thousand members, so I know the job isn't easy. I just wouldn't think of ever enforcing so many rules that may destroy the element of fun.
Hmm. I'm rambling again.
