Yay!!! :D

I picked up World of Glass some time ago and pretty much picked up Midwinters Tears/ Angina, Widows Weeds and Beyond the Veil immediately after I finished listening to it. I absolutely love Deadlocked , Wormwood and A Sequel of Decay.

As I've said before, Mortan Veland, the former lead singer has a new band called Sirenia. I havent heard them though. :?

Woah. That's kinda weird. I just discovered them a few days ago. I only had time to listen to one song on their site, and I think I remember it being pretty cool. I can't get it to play now, though! :x

I'm getting to know Tristania. I listen to this band about 2-3 months. My friend said me a lot of Tristania, and i had to know it. But i must admit this music is very good. I like these styles. I think i'll listen to this band very loooong =)

Tristania is an awesome band, but I'm afraid of their forthcoming album... they said thay have created a new atmosphere(?) to the gothic metal and usually I don't like the albuns with these experimentations... at least I have the Sirenia albuns to confort me... by the way, their second albun "An Elixir for Existence" is just perfect and you HAVE to listen to it...

Not really. Not on normal radio. Only on this one show which plays only metal.

European metal is not very popular over here, unfortunately. :(

That's nice! :) I'm waiting for some sort of occasion (my birthday is too far away) to ask for CDs. I just had to find out all the good stuff after my birthday...

Cool! I've introduced Tristania to three people so far. One liked them (in a weird way.. she said that they've got an allure she can't quite explain.. it was new to her, she doesn't normally listen to this kind of stuff), another only liked "The Modern End" and the last didn't like them at all. Well, their loss. ;)

Can someone explain to me what the video for Heretique is all about.

Maybe I'm really stupid, but I don't understand *anything* that happens in it. Okay I have a fair idea about some of it, but the video is kinda wierd. And dark, dim and black-and-white.

What the hell is up with the typewriter, and the guy attached to those hoses or whatever.

That video actually freaked me out a bit. How it's kind of broken up (and black and white.. and creepy) reminded me of "The Ring", and after I saw that movie I couldn't sleep for a week. Haha! I read that it was just a hobby video for that director. I don't know if there's an actual plot to it.

That same director's doing the video for Libre. Which I hope comes out soon! I think it is. I remember reading news about maybe a release in July or something... :/

I couldn't tell you, man! I haven't watched the video since, and it's been quite a while. But I am excited for the video! Hell, I'm excited for anything Tristania!

I read that for this current tour, Einar (the keyboard player) won't be joining them on tour. :( I know it could really make of a difference for ME because I'm never going to see them live, but I think the more live stuff, the better. But they said that he'll be working on the next album, which is really OK with me. :D

I went to buy one of their other albums today, but when I got there, there were about 4 other albums.

Someone please recommend an album for me! My favourite track from Ashes is the Wretched, if that helps.

I saw them live in February, and I loved them so much!! Vibeke looked like she was being slain on stage the way she was moving to the music, it was cool...

I've heard of it but don't have it or know much about it sorry.

Wow did you know that Tristania is a plant from Australia? I wonder if the band was named after it...unlikely.

Tristania is a genus of a few species of plants in the myrtle family Myrtaceae, native to New South Wales, Australia, closely related to Callistemon.

They are shrubs or small trees, with dense branching. The leaves are evergreen, opposite, simple, lanceolate, from 5-9 cm long and 1 cm broad. The flowers are produced in dense clusters of 3-15 together; each flower is 1-1.5 cm diameter, with five small yellow petals and numerous conspicuous stamens.

You guys have to listen to "The Modern End" - the only cover song they ever did. I think it's just awesome!

I know I've said this so many times, but though many people didn't like "World of Glass", I'd recommend to just listen to that album if you want to get into them. That album is like a bolder (yet somewhat simpler) Beyond the Veil. Or something like that. Umm.. easiest to swallow out of all the albums? Haha. Just ignore me. ><;;

And you must listen to "Evenfall". And if you have the chance, try and d/l the video. I'm not sure if it's an official video, but it's pretty cool!

Even though I only own two of their albums, I consider myself a fan of this band. World of Glass is far superior to Ashes, in my opinion. I can happily listen to all of World of Glass, but there are songs on Ashes which have had me press the skip button more times than I care to remember. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad album (5 okay songs out of 9 "ain't bad I s'pose"), but World of Glass is much better. Tender Trip on Earth, Deadlocked, The Shining Path, Crushed Dreams.. all great.

I agree none of the older albums are anywhere near commercial, but Ashes certainly is more commercial. I think that was one of the main reason's why Morten left Tristania, because he wanted to do more of the same or similar style, and the rest of the band wanted to do slightly more commercial stuff. Also he wasn't happy in the band or something.
Then he left and created Sirenia. That band is freaking awesome! Not as good as the old Tristania, but much better than Ashes. Tristania are nothing without Morten Veland.

I don't find Ashes commercial at all. To me, it was the hardest CD to warm up to though. Now I appreciate the type of songs they have on there. The songs on Ashes seem darker to me than anything on WoG and maybe BtV. It's hard to say which album I like the least, but I can tell you that I like WoG the best. :D

Top 10 songs (hah, couldn't do it in 5)? Not in order:

10. Cease to Exist (I find this song so soothing...)
9. The Shining Path
8. Deadlocked
7. Lethean River
6. Evenfall
5. The Modern End
4. December Elegy
3. Cure
2. Shadowman
1. Lethean River

I was freeze-framing the Libre video today, and its freaking insane! Almost every 'scene' is only about 1 or 2 frames long! There is just so many things in that video that you would never see if you just watched it normally. Crazy video... but fitting for the song.

Hmm. I've seen many negative reviews of Ashes recently, so I went back and re-listened to the album. I don't see where the negativity is coming from. It may not be as good as some of their past work, but its not the worst thing I've ever heard. In fact, I find it darkly romantic, and strangely powerful in a lot of songs, such as "Libre", "The Wretched", "Shadowman" and "Equilibrium". And "Cure" is such a beautiful song. I think the band put a lot of effort into the compositions, and I think some people have written it off without letting the album grow on them. I've been listening to Ashes non-stop since Tuesday, and it certainly does grow on you.

TRISTANIA To Record New Album In February - Oct. 3, 2005

Norwegian symphonic metal band TRISTANIA have posted the following message on their official web site:

"First of all we would like thank the ones that showed up and supported us on Wave Gotik Treffen, Summer Breeze and Wacken Open Air. We had a great time.

"As most of you know by now; we're currently in writing mode. Østen [Bergoy, vocals] has been writing quite some of the lyrics, and both Anders [H. Hidle, guitar] and Einar [Moen, keyboards/programming] are working busily with pre-production of the songs. Right now we are starting to jam on the new material as a complete band in the rehearsal room. We learned with 'Ashes' [2005] how fruitful this can turn out; especially considering the vocals. The whole band is shaping the material together during this process, and each member adds a personal touch to his/her lines. Usually new ideas also is born through this process, and to a certain degree we are composing music from scratch this way. This time around we also have a 'new' creative force in Svein Terje [Solvang, guitar] .

"Not doing too many gigs at the moment, as we want to focus on the song writing. One of the few concerts we will do this period is in Norway: We will play the Karmøygeddon Arctic Festival, in Haugesund on November 12th — together with TÖMMERMENN (some of us are huge fans of their music) and EVERGREY, among others.

"We were earlier hoping to do a full U.S. tour during this autumn. Although a couple of offers came up, the right offer to support a headliner that somehow fits our sound didn't come up this time. The reason for this was mainly that a possible U.S. tour would need to take place within a quite short time frame (after the summer festivals, before pre-production of the upcoming album). As U.S. is a new territory to tour for us (Metalfest, L.A. in 2000 is our only U.S. gig so far) we need to support a bigger band in order to tour the States. Of course, no one can control who is touring at a given time, but we're confident that the first proper U.S. tour will happen after the release of next year's album. We know from all the fan mail we have got during the years that a lot of people want us to come to U.S. Well, soon you will get this opportunity — we hope you'll use it!

"Everything goes really well concerning writing the new material. Einar has built a home studio in the basement of his house, and we work there almost every weekend with pre-production of the new songs — using Nuendo. Quite soon we will also have ready a recording room for vocals connected to the studio. Other than that we are e-mailing ideas back and forth to each other and it slowly the songs are developed.

We are extremely eager about the new stuff, and we feel that we have the basis for some very solid songs at the moment. In the spirit of TRISTANIA the new material is quite diverse. A couple of the tracks will include some doomy stuff, and we are working on an industrial piece. A couple of the songs can be described as dark atmospheric stuff. There will be some heavy guitar based tracks, which at least we find very catchy. In the end it is too early to tell which songs that will make it to the album, still we're confident that we will end up with an album we will be proud of.

"Concerning producer and choice of studio, this decision has already been made. We will wait a little bit with publishing these details, because we first want everything to be 100% confirmed. We will come together with the producer in December, and work on the songs together. If it works out like we think it will do, we will go for this choice — and we will record the album in February, with a planned release before the summer. After the release we will be ready for heavy touring again.

"Looking forward to see you guys again then!"

Smytho

WOW that's early! They only just released their last album! But it's all good news. Sounds like they're going to experiment with new sounds, which is good. Industrial, doom, atmospheric. Should be interesting, as long as they don't stuff it up of course  Certainly hope it's more epic and dark atmospheric like their older stuff.

Lucky people in the US who are going to get shows...SO, so jealous.

On their newest album, Ashes, the female vocals are used kind of the way a rapper would incorporate a female singer on his track. lol! Bad analogy? XD But yeah, Vibeke doesn't sing too much on Ashes. I think she sings the most on "World Of Glass".

Since I'm in a Tristania mood, I'll upload my favourite songs from Widow's Weeds and Ashes (because those are the only ones I downloaded before I bought the albums).

I just realized that my favourite song from WW isn't even on my computer. So to hell with it. I hope you don't mind wma files because now I'm uploading stuff from all their albums.

Katya the growling male vocals are very prominant in Tristania. They're style is sometimes referred to as the "Beauty and the Beast" style. Tristania is usually about half growling, half female singing.

They're older albums are a lot better than Ashes, and more epic. Try Wormwood, A sequel of decay or World of Glass.

For songs that don't have the male grunts, try: "deadlocked", and err....well they all sorta have the growling. But yeah World of Glass has more of the female singing in it.

While a lot of the songs on Ashes don't have the growling, not many of them have the female vocals, and Ashes is not as good as they're older albums so I don't recommend listening to that album first.

Ooh you need this (http://s38.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0NA4OIO0PQOOI1I9MYMMRTIG3C) song. Tender Trip on Earth, it's my favourite Tristania song.

I was debating whether to include that song or not... but the file (of all the songs zipped up) was really big. ><;; But yes, it's an awesome song. ^^

Tristania Press Release

We are eager to announce that the new album is completely finished. We are all delighted with our latest creation, which has been named Illumination. The planned release is in September.

Some titles from the album are Sanguine Sky, Open Ground, Lotus, Down and Mercyside, to mention a few. All titles will be revealed at a later date.

True to tradition, we have made an album with a definite and unmistakably Tristanian sound, but which also brings a lot of new and fresh material. The album is another evolutionary step and lets us explore new areas while staying true to our roots.

On every track, the moods and elements are plentiful; ranging from doom to industrial, from soothing synthesizer passages to technical metal riffs, from dark ballads to classic goth rock – it's all there. We've used a string quartet on several tracks, which attributed yet another dimension to those songs.

The collaboration with producer Waldemar Sorychta worked really great; we all worked well together as a team. We are delighted with the production, which is exceedingly powerful. Waldemar also came to Norway, prior to going into studio, for two pre-production sessions. This was a very rewarding process which left us better prepared than ever going into the studio.

It is hard to describe the individual songs, but as ever, the material is very diverse. In a few weeks time, we will post samples from the album online, to give you an impression of the release. We will also post a video collage from recordings made in Woodhouse Studios, where we have spent quite some time this spring.

Illumination sports some of the strongest vocal performances from both Vibeke and Østen. The extreme vocals are less frequent, but the parts appearing on the album are truly great. We wanted to get someone special to do these parts, and were lucky to get one of our personal favourites in the field to make a guest appearance on the album; namely Vorph from Samael. His performance is truly of the highest standard.

The music is written by Anders & Einar, with a couple of tracks co-written with producer Waldemar during the pre-production in Norway. Østen is the main lyricist, although Einar has written words for a few songs. Kjartan Hermansen has also once again shared with us his skills as a lyricist.

Those of you who will see us on the Evolution Fest in Italy and Mera Luna in Germany this summer will get to listen to some of the new material – that's a promise. A lot of the new tracks will be killer live material.

Yay. :p Looking forward to this.

Oldish news, but Kjetil has left the band.

From Kjetil:
After 4 amazing years, I have decided to leave Tristania. There is no bad blood between us at all, and we are still good friends.

This is a choice I had to make, just for my own part, and it was the right time to do it now - before the new album

I just want to take the opportunity to thank all the fans I have met, and bands I have shared stage with, during tours and festivals. It's been a blast - you will truly be remembered!

To the Tristania "family"; Einar, Vibeke, Kenneth, Anders, Rune, Svein Terje, Østen and Carlo - It's been fantastic to be a part of you these years, thank you so much for everything.

Many greetings from Kjetil.

From Tristania
It has been apparent for some time, within the ranks of Tristania, that Kjetil does not want to continue to pursue a musical career at this level, but we have decided to focus on the new record and wait to announce this.

The growling vocals will henceforth be performed by other members of the band, and on the new album we're delighted to have the help of a special guest (whose name will be announced at a later time).

We understand, and respect, Kjetil's decision, and thank him for the time he has been with Tristania. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours, musical and otherwise.

I can't wait til this new album comes out! September isn't so bad. :D

Kjetils growls I felt were too harsh. I liked the Ashes album, as a metal album. But as a Tristania album it just wasnt them. Hopefully the new album will bring with it a return to the chorals and latin chanting, and also a return to Vibekes more operatic vocals.
On another forum we were pondering on who the mystery guest growler could be...so what do you guys think?

although there WAS a huge gap between WoG and ashes i guess...nothing comapred to fallen/the open door :D

although it sounds like they are moving even further away from their style like on BtV...i prefered that to ashes so much.

Maybe they're trying to stray away from the Morten influence.
The way I look at it, World of Glass was their try at Morten's style. With the "larger than life" orchestrations, latin chants...
I expect this new album to be more like Ashes than BtV or WW. That's not a bad thing. I like their new sound. If I missed their old sound, I'd listen to Sirenia.. :p

I like both styles of music, but I'm not going to sit around for the rest of my life dreaming about Tristania being this or that. They're exploring, and evolving, and trying new things, which is brave, and great, and WAY much better than sitting on their asses and releasing album after album of the same stuff. It would get boring.

And if I want to listen to Morten music, I'll listen to Sirenia (who've just found a new singer, btw, whoo!). Tristania is now TRISTANIA, not MORTEN - which is another evolution, and one that I refuse to see as a bad thing.

As to the new album, I'll wait to listen to it before I give any kind of judgement on it. The name is kind of cool though, almost an opposite to "Ashes"...

ITA! If bands didn't, I dunno, "reinvent" themselves, I'd get really bored. Who the hell wants 5 of the same kind of album? I love it when they spice things up. Sometimes it works for them, sometimes it doesn't. At least they're trying new things. =)

And plus, I'm really liking that Vibeke and Osten get more parts! *drools*

The "old" Tristania sound, to me differs from Sirenia. Sirenia is just Morten but the old Tristania was Morten, Anders and Einar, and those they were a great combination. BTV, IMO, is their finest album and if you look at the credits, Morten only wrote 3 of the songs on it. I would really love to hear a return to that sound.

Tristania is a band from norway, and also with a female voice, but also with a male singer.Vibeke stene was the singer for years, but in 2007 she left the band for musical differences;she wasn't agreed with the new sound ,that everytime was farther from the gothic sound, that sound the band was typically known.TRISTANIA is :GOTHIC METAL,DOOM METAL,but with the album "illuminations" doesn't seems to be there right now(in those genres). Now the new singer:MARIANGELA,(25) gave to the band a sound more agressive,on the live performances, she is not a soprano like vibeke, but i think that is still Tristania, one of my favourite bands.
