These next two pictures were a school art project. We went on a field trip to NYC and my teacher told us to take lots of pictures. So I did. When we got back she told us our project was to take the pictures we took and make it look like one big picture. This was mine;
(Sorry it looks crappy and for the black in the blackground. It was too big to scan. And the lighting in my room sucks.)
Holy crap!! That's amazing, and just awesome! I never seen anything like that before. Awesome job! Well, if I was the teacher I would give you a 100 too. :)

Very interesting school project and you performed your task perfectly...the first time I looked at your picture without reading the text above I didn't realize it was made up of several pictures.
I really like the segue(?) from the city to the skyline...:) Great how you managed the unity of the colours...I guess this was very difficult with so many pictures(each a different tone)!!
Keep it up!

I really like the mottled sky in the second one and the third one really reminded me of prison cell... probably because I've been reading about Nelson Mandela too much.
The flowers were pretty too!
The one of New York is amazing. I've never been to New York, but that one really sums up my thoughts of it!

Hey,Vanessa :)
I've been on holiday for two weeks so I'm a bit late with my comment....
First of all I'm glad you decided to post your older pictures here...it's always interesting to see how an artist's work developes!! And those are good!!
Nice shots of NYC,you receive different impressions of the city by seeing those photos....My favourite one of the older pics is the last one,it's expressing safeness in a "place of trouble"...hmmm I've got a little sister,too....she almost looks the same from behind :p
I see that your older city photos were taken from a viewpoint(?) in or near the crowd whereas the new ones were taken from the "bird's eye view".That's an interesting developement!! :)
I really love the one you have in your sig!!! It's confusing, because you first have to differ what the reflection is...you definitely have to look at it a second time...it's really cool and the person in the picture makes it even better!!
The other pictures are great,too... I like the way you find something special in a simple motif, like in the rainbow picture!!
Keep it up!!!! :)
I'm so excited to see the firework pictures...I'm sure they'll be great anyway....just because fireworks are great :p ;)

I've come back to look at your photos a couple of times, because they're so good, but was never sure what to say.
(I'll try anyway)
You have a good eye for compostition and aren't afraid to throw something off-center.
The whole reason the photo of the window in your first post is interesting is because it's off-center. Such a simple subject, and such a cool result.
I like the one looking down at the balconies. It's a really interesting angle - I just wish you could have leaned out a little farther so they weren't on top of each other quite so much.. (Don't want you to risk falling though!)
You also have several I like which show places that are empty - the cafe table, the beach, the balconies, the chairs on the lawn. These photos all feel just slightly lonely. It's great because it's so subtle.
Great photos - keep posting!

Is it ok if I use that for my GCSE art? Not like, claim it for my own or anything, but the title of it's got to be "reflections" and I need like a zillion pictures to analyse. If you're already using it for something, that's ok, but I really like that picture. :)

The picture of the house is located on the Bennington College (http://www.bennington.edu/main.htm) campus. I went to visit the school last year because I was interested in going there. I ended up hating the school, but there were a few cool things to take pictures of.
By the way, if anyone is interested in what type of camera I use, this is it;
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y258/shardsofnothing/photographs/canon300.jpg
It's a Canon EOS Rebel G. I might be buying a better zoom lens soon, but it's $160 so I really want to make sure it's the one I want. I also have a digital Gateway camera with 4.1 mega pixels, but I rarely use it. I don't like it much.

Hey,Vanessa!
Great that you got one :D It gives the photographs an ancient look, which is really cool I think...and your sister looks way too cute in that picture ^^
I also like the photographs you posted before.Especially the first pic with the autumn coloured tree amid a grey street. With a bit imagination the leaves form the shape of a heart ;)
The fourth one with the bridge in black and white is also very awesome. From this point of view and due to the reflection in the water the bridge,in my opinion, gets a more impressive effect than in the other pictures.
I love the contrast you make in the last two photographs by first showing a colourfull active New York(,I guess?) full of people consistent with nature and then with a grey clouded sky arising up cold builduings.
btw,I love your new av :)

I guess I feel that way because I take so many bad pictures. I rarely take ones I'm satisfied with. Like my last post, that was the only photo out of my whole roll of film that I actually liked. It gets me down, I guess. Usually, though, I just try to take more pictures and hope for a better outcome.

"that was the only photo out of my whole roll of film that I actually liked. It gets me down, I guess." Been there, done that... :o
“I rarely take ones I'm satisfied with.” And what exactly is it that you don’t like about the rest of them? Is the image quality not as high as you want it to be, or is it more of a "I-thought-it-would -make-a-nice-photograph-but -now-that-I-see-the-print-two-weeks -later-I-don’t-know -what-I-was-thinking" kind of thing?
If the problem is of a technical nature (blurriness, bad lighting, etc.), I can try to help you fix it, if you like. :)
robinhood
06-19-2006, 03:09 PM
I don't think you should worry too much about the amount of photos you have to shoot to get good ones.
During a photo class in college, another student once asked me "So, what's your ratio?". After a few seconds of staring at her with a dumb look and trying to puzzle out what she meant, I finally had to ask. She explained that she meant the ratio of usable stuff to total amount shot. I just stammered that I didn't keep track. I still don't. I think that in pursuing an art (and that's what this is really), you can't get too concerned about stuff like that. It's too depressing, and frustrating. It's too likely to make you want to quit - and that would be bad. Yes, some of your photos are better than others, but the good ones are SO GOOD. Keep at it and "don't sweat the small stuff".
If it's the cost of film that's what's frustrating you, (and I DO remember how much it can start to add up), have you considered switching to digital? You can shoot all you want, and the bummers cost you nothing.
Weetzie

"I-thought-it-would -make-a-nice-photograph-but -now-that-I-see-the-print-two-weeks -later-I-don’t-know -what-I-was-thinking" kind of thing?
Yup! You said it perfectly. Sometimes it's the image quality, too.
Yes, some of your photos are better than others, but the good ones are SO GOOD. Keep at it and "don't sweat the small stuff".
Thanks Robinhood. :) I try not to let it get me down. There are days when I think "Why do I even bother?" But I love photography too much to ever stop, no matter how much I think I suck sometimes. :p
If it's the cost of film that's what's frustrating you, (and I DO remember how much it can start to add up), have you considered switching to digital? You can shoot all you want, and the bummers cost you nothing.
Actually, I've been saving up for a digital for a while now (I have it picked out and everything). The problem is, it's $1,200. I'm really hoping I'll have enough money after my birthday in September. If not I'll have it by Christmas. I do have a digital camera now though. It was a present from a few years ago, but the batteries died so often and I just never cared for it much. Then it just stopped working all together. I don't care though, I've always preferred my film camera. In the past couple of years though I've been leaning more towards digital, since I've been experimenting more and I don't want to completely waste money on film/getting it developed.

You are correct, spending money on film, and then having to get it developed can get a tad on the expensive side. It would be wise to get a digital camera. As you said, hopefully you will be able to get that soon. If and when you get the camera, you will have to snap photographs like mad for us! :).

Fantastic! :D.
Those two shots? Beautiful. I see not a flaw within them.

I love the first pic of the trees, i love how you've centred that big twisted and contorted tree into the middle and it branches off! It looks like the place is untouched and you've stumbled across it and it's kinda eerie at the same time!
That photograph is stunning, and there is no way around it. Vanessa, I've said it before, and I'll say it once more.... you're surely on your way to becoming an accomplished photographer, my dear.
Wow, you've got a real eye for a good photograph! What camera do you use? I like how you frame your shots, you must be careful in what is actualy shown. Your stuff is amazing <3
