I am thinking about starting a "Welcoming Committee/Guide Program" to welcome (obviously) new users and help them learn about our board policies, rules, and culture.

Anybody think this is a good idea? Is anybody interested in BEING a "Guide" ?

The requirements for the "guide" position have not yet been set. But I can assure you that it will be strict.

I think a Welcoming Committee is a great idea! I have been reading through the threads trying to get caught up and learn how things are done here. Its been great and I dont mind at all but it can be a little overwhelming.
I think I understand most things about this site (like how not to get banned) :) but it would be really nice to have someone to answer some little questions I have.

I think a welcoming committee is a great idea. I also think that they should be the only ones to post replys to the introduce yourself forum. I think people abuse that and post to everyone in there just to get the post count up.

For the most part it is, but every once in a while you find someone actually trying to welcome that person. I know that when I post in there I try to say more than "Welcome to the board."

i would LOVE to be a guide!! i would absolutely love it. i think this is a great idea. however, i'm not sure if i'm qualified. i really love this board but i've only been here 1 month and 7 days. (1 month and a week). i've learned so much. ehh what the heck. just let me know where i can "apply". if anybody here deserves first dibs at being guides then it's TEH CFW and TEH JES!!!! woohoo!! lol

IMO, there should a mix of users in the Welcome Committee. Maybe people who have been here a few months (plus "veterans" of course) but who know and have stuck by the rules can welcome people as well, since it can be intimidating being greeted, even by a nice person) whose been around since the board was first formed...

Well, there used to be a sort of welcome.. that told people how to join the #evanescence channel of IRC, the committee could be like that, except have certain people with certain strengths. Some people on the board are really good with helping.. some people, tend to get frustrated... oh well, we shall see!

You could probably turn the FAQ into a welcome wagon, or something like that...maybe, just a suggestion.

That's not a bad idea. With as many new people as we get in here a day, it would be helpful to have a group of people to point them in the right direction. Depending on how many people you had in the group, you could maybe assign each helper a certain range in the alphabet. Maybe they get a notification of some sort when a new person in their range joins, and they can offer help. Even if the newbie helper person just PMs them stuff that's in the FAQs could help, because, let's face it, a new person is more likely to read that stuff if it seems to be more personal to them (a PM instead of a page they have to glance at before they start posting).

The helpers might even be able to assist in moderating the NEW posts by those users before they move into the "Registered (UnModerated)" category. Obviously, I don't know what goes on with all of that, but I'd imagine there's a lot to do there, so if you get a good group of trusted people, they might be able to lighten the load.

Well I have helped n00bs in the past find there way. For ome reason they come to me. I don't mind in the least I teach them a few thing so that they don't piss anyone off. It's rather fun. I also postwhore in the intro forum with Boo but that was passed to me so I do it out of respect.

Well, This is how I feel about it. :|

The 'committee' can change their titles and such like that, but it's not really going to matter too much if we do, :| Everyone has the capability to change it, so does it really matter if we do?

Everyone should want to help.. I don't mind working with anyone, for anything. I'll do it just cause I really like how this place is turning into a better place to be. The whole moral of the board is brighter. People are constantly saying how it's improving.

I think if we have the committee then it should be a way to help everyone. There are people on the board who have their strengths. I think that Cfw is perfect for leadership in the Evanescence information, because he does know his stuff where the band is concerned. He's not going to 'guess' about things, he'll find out the truth and tell it to you personally. You definitely don't want somone who will only go half way.

But yea, I'd totally be willing to work with somone, I think there should be committee 'heads' but I don't know about a certain leader to do it all. Somethings can get overwhelming. If we work together we can achieve greater things with the board. Which.. to go ahead and ask.. what exactly are we going to do? Any ideas?

This is list of guides as of right now. They were chosen for their abilities, intelligence, attitude, and the way that people on the board respond to their post.

This is a diversified group of people, I feel that we all have the ability to work together. Just because you were not picked does not mean you are not capable. As much information as possible was drawn about each person. Then, I decided to ask a moderator that I trust to give me a straight unbiased opinion for certain people. He suggested that the group be no bigger than 6 or 7 to begin with. I managed to work him up to 8.

We encourage everyone to continue welcoming people. All the committee is here to do is interact with people on a more intimate level.

All of the people chosen were PMed. The board is steady changing and I think that with this we can do a lot of good. So, let's try :! As ToB has stated, this is an unofficial group, we are doing it because we want to help. None of us expect anything in return. Congrats to the guides! You guys are awsome, I'm glad to work with you!

I have already helped people in the past find there way here. And I will always do it when asked because I do enjoy it. Babby you misunderstood. I enjoy helping, I helped you when you first started and many others. Without anyone realizing it. No one knows what I can do or not do.

Colleen should be on the welcoming committee. Shes helped heaps of n00bs she just doesnt get any recognition. She helped me alot with finding my way around the new board lol. If she didnt help me i wouldnt even know how to post lol.

Ok, so...Fairy said that ToB originally only wanted 5 or 6 people to be on this WC, and that she managed to get it to 8... Ok, cool. So, 8 people are picked, myself and many others not making it. I was bummed, but I accepted it, but I feel one person just kept making a big issue about it and I totally lost a lot of respect for this person, because as much as the EvBoard is a great message board, it's still just an internet message board...

It's not a big deal, move on. I felt like this has been turned from a really nice, cool idea into a big popularity movement, and to be honest, that sucks because that's not how this should be!

Anyway, I got over it, tried to support this person because that's what I felt I should do, but it didn't stop the bitching or anything. Now after another person has been added to the list, it makes me feel like if I bitch enough and whine enough and make idle threats, I'll get what I want...I mean..This is the freaking internet, it's not real, so why get all stressed about a "committee"

I know that this "committee" is getting some people aggravated, but the whole point wasn't for a popularity contest or anything. The main goal was to try to help the n00bs coming in. Just because you aren't a committee member, doesn't mean that you weren't "worthy". It's just easier to make sure that one person contacts a new person directly, rather than that person being bombarded with a ton of Pm's offering help. There is a such thing as overkill too. Fairy & ToB discussed things and they decided what would be best. Of course there are going to be people that feel left out, but that wasn't the whole point of this "committee". Just because you weren't chosen doesn't mean that you still can't welcome people.

Considering I feel the same way about a few things, I'll jump in and answer.

This isn't something against a) the welcome committe or b) that someone got in after the deadline.

I've had some success. I've pm'd about 4 people and about 3 of them wrote back thanking me for offering my help :) It seems that there aren't a lot of n00bs in my letters though, so I'm just waiting for someone new to join now :)

I've actually had a lot of success, :p As long as we make the first step.. then it all works out.

I like the idea and I would like to join the Welcome Commitee, I usually always welcome new users anyway, as much as I can. When I joined it wasn't a pleasurable experience, of course it was due to my lack of authority and I was a n00b in the making. Anyway, if your not careful about what you say you are liable to get eaten alive by senior members, and that is all the humiliation you need to make you not want to evar come back any message board. But anyway ToB I believe it is a great idea. Keep us updated on your thoughts!

My general view is that if there are still that many locked threads in EvChat, then we may not have done what we've wanted to accomplish.

This is a great idea cfw. I had thought about doing something like it, but never got around to it :)

I was going to respond to this in the 'feedback thread' but I figured it made more sense to do it here :)

As for the threads being locked in EvChat...I think that we have helped. Yes, there still have been threads locked, but I think overall, the amount has decreased and the threads that have been locked are usually created by the same few people. I think maybe we should start watching the locked threads more closely and if someone gets a thread locked and it's someone who's "our n00b", maybe we should make sure to pm them and help them by telling them why they got their thread locked. I've done this a few times already and it seemed to really help them out.

Then again, I feel that we have gone to everybody who's needed help and has answered the call of duty.

I am thinking about starting a "Welcoming Committee/Guide Program" to welcome (obviously) new users and help them learn about our board policies, rules, and culture.

Anybody think this is a good idea? Is anybody interested in BEING a "Guide" ?

Also introduce yourself, that's where you find out who your guide is (which in your case, your guide is me) So if you have any questions, feel free to pm me :)
