Okay, I've seen threads on books that people want to see made into movies. Well I couldn't find a topic like this, so I started this one. What are you reading right now, if anything? The porno mag in your bedside table does not count.... pervert. As it is, I am reading "The Problem of Pain" by C. S. Lewis. He wrote great fiction, but his Christian apologetics are considered to be the best of the twentieth century. This book deals with the theological implications and explanation behind the existence of pain in the presence of an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and loving God. It's good stuff, man.

I don't have enough of an attention span to sit and read for too long, but I have been keeping up with Blue's story (http://www.evboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=8397) lately in the "Your Stuff" forum, which is fantabulous. She's quite the talented writer.

Right now, it's a bunch of rather unexciting, yet vital to know info about the new library OS that goes online in Nov, and which I get to teach tomorrow. After tomorrow i finish reading "Black Cross Red Star Vol 1 " by Christer Bergstrom, and Andrey Mikhailov (it's about air combat on the Eastern Front in WW2) After that I start "Quicksilver" by Neal Stephenson.

And I'm always reading a bit of the Bible.

I've been reading a lot of Edgar Allan Poe (random tidbit: Ligeia really reminded me of Even in Death) along with other american authors of horror stories for my class (i love rubbing in the fact that i have a lit class that is so much cooler than all y'all's lit classes)

When i'm not reading for class, I usually pick up a harry potter book and start re-reading... I... er... have a problem.

Oh, and i want to read Maniac Magee because everyone seems shocked that i never read that before.

and the latest Dave Eggers book... Ima borrow it from Tom over christmas break.

Currently reading Anthem by Ayn Rand for my english class. Good book, makes you think. Even if I don't agree with some of the implied concepts..

On a more normal basis I read alot of fantasy books, some mystery and classics, etc. I used to read a LOT more than I do now, been putting it off in favor of other things lately...

I'm currently rereading a series called the 'Darkfall' series by Isobelle Carmody. You know when you find a book that you can reread countless times because you get more out of it each time? That's these books to me :D

The two books 'Darkfall' and 'Darksong' are fantasy based, but touch on things like meaningless music in contempory culture, the indifference of todays generation and the power of music. I reccommend these to anyone who enjoys the darker works and also those who read for escapism

Normally, I never read, unless I'm forced to cause of an assignment or something.

But I was reading an article about Yuri Kochiyama earlier and it reminded me of Malcolm X. I forgot to buy the DVD at Best Buy today so I guess I'm going to be re-reading his autobiography. The first time I read it, it was an incredible feeling and I felt the words and could picture many of the scenes. And I was really pissed off at the end, obviously. I have enough time now, so yea...might as well start again.

Dan Brown's Digital Fortress. I really have to say, though, after reading Da Vinci Code and Deception Point, the rest of his books have seemed kind of useless. I recently read the first book, Across the Nightingale Floor, and oh my god, it is one of the best books I've ever read :D The other two I haven't read are Grass For His Pillow, and Brilliance of the Moon. It's basically set in an Ancient Japanese world...thing lol, and it's about different clans/tribes who sort of compete against each othe for power. I'm reading the Silmarillion - it's very hard to read, but really cool at the same time. It starts off kinda like the Bible, but its just so much more fantastical (in a fantasy sense). Heres the first paragraph.

There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Iluvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of is thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. And he spoke to them, propounding to them themes of music; and they sang before him, and he was glad. But for a long while they sang only each alone, or but few together, while the rest hearkened; for each comprehended only that part of the mind of Iluvatar from which he came, and in the understanding of their brethren they grew but slowly. Yet ever as they listened they came to deeper understanding, and increased in unison and harmony.
-JRR Tolkien

See what I mean about it being a bit like the Bible? (and also being really hard to read!) But I have read about 3 chapters and I already have a better understanding of the Lord of the Rings. It's great!

I'm trying to get my hands on The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka :p

GOOD boy! Have I ever told you that you're cool? :D

Anyhow, I'm reading "The Scarlet Letter" for AP English. I also have a Huxley book somewhere ("Point Counterpoint," I think) but it's horrifically overdue at the library.

Oh, and Michelle, Slaughterhouse-Five pwns. I read it for an extra credit test last year.

I'm also reading a German book called Ein Sommer, ein Anfang by Herbert Günther. It's definitely for lower level/younger readers, but is still proving pretty interesting.

midnight_mesektet - reading Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Slayer, Volume 2.

Nah you are'nt lame, and Buffy will never be lame :)

lana_banana - Silmarillion, hard to read, but I have read about 3 chapters and I already have a better understanding of the Lord of the Rings.

Keep going :) It's a good book and does give better background to Hobbit & LOTR. Try not to skip to "Of the Third Age" section or you'll miss some cool stuff. The tale of Beren & Luthien is nice, very much mirrors that of Aragorn & Arwen. Scary how powerful Sauron was, but Morgoth could pwn him like that.

I'm reading When I Was Older by Garret Freymann-Weyr.
It's really good and i'd recommend to those out there who like books about the lifes of teenagers, how they deal and all those other clichés.
Here's a link with a little info about it: When I was Older (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=1689781&sourceid=1500000000000001827190&dest=9999999997)

Middle Earth Fans: If ya dig The Simarillion, check out Tolkien's 'Unfinished Tales'. I like the tales about Turin and the history of Galadriel and Celeborn. Theres also info about the Istari (Gandalf and fellow wizards) and the Palantiri stones.

Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Kanuckians of Terra!

i, i'm almost finished reading "fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury. ;)This book used to be required reading - still should be. Ray Bradbury is one of the greatest writers of our time. He gets categorized as sci fi but it's soooo much more than that. When your done try "The Martian Chronicals" and "The Illustrated Man" More loosely connected short stories than novels but just unbelievable. I also liked "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Actually just about anything he's ever written! Can you tell I'm a fan?;)

Middle Earth Fans: If ya dig The Simarillion, check out Tolkien's 'Unfinished Tales'. :) Or if you're really nuts try Christopher Tolkien's "History of Middle Earth" 6 volumes of the collected works of everything JRR ever wrote about Middle Earth. A lot of it is early renditions of stories that eventually became LOTR and the Silmarillion. Comprehensive - yes, but this is NOT light reading.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is good. It's more sci-fi than fantasy, really, I suppose. But Orson Scott Cark writes a lot of cool stuff.

Oh, and for kid fantasy, there's always the Black Cauldron and that whole series by Lloyd Alexander. I haven't read the whole series, but bits and pieces here and there.

Did you ever read the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Now that's hard to wrap your head around. LOOOONG books. And I can't wait for the next one.

Anyone remember the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson? I read them ages ago. Had a nice hook - the hero is transported to another world and refuses to believe anything around him is real and consequently refused to become the hero. Beautifully written.
