I definitely think it was the partnership of Ben and Amy (and of course the rest of the band members thereafter - Rocky, David H, John L ) that made Evanescence what it was. Ben has the knowledge of how to arrange songs, how to write it so it comes across musically and emotionally effective. Amy has the power of writing good lyrics and also putting unique emotion into them with her voice, and her piano. BUT. She is not a good songwriter - the songs on TOD are LACKING in my opinion. It lacks structure, it lacks direction, it lacks finesse. I think she has great ideas...but she can't order them so that it has the impact which Fallen songs had, for instance. They are like random ideas that don't necessarily all gel that well, save for a few songs...but I think the whole image of the band had changed too much by the time TOD came out. Oh well. She has talent. She IS musical. But....her on her own? I don't think so. In a dance, it takes two to make it artistic....just a thought....

You never know, how much truth there is to anything you read.....
BUT I have read that, Amy has actually started to write again for the next album! ![]()

Amy is a pretty face with steadily declining vocal talent (because she won't take care of her voice), less-than-mediocre lyrical abilities, and no respect for the people who skyrocketed her to where she is now. To put it simply...Axl Rose with tits. P.S. Kudos to you for knowing when you don't make sense, but I'll ask you to speak for yourself from now on, please and thank you. I haven't heard anyone else telling me I don't make sense. Quote:
Well, she was writing with Terry on TOD...but judging from that and going with your dance analogy, he is definitely not her ideal partner, lol.

There are plenty of signs that amy and ben made a better combo then amy and terry, just look at Fallen and all pre fallen demos then compare that to TOD lyrically BEN and Amy we're better together but also take a look at ben's work since his departure from Ev and the songs he has written for other musicians he is a more deep and better structured lyricist than amy is. so i dont believe that amy will ever stand as strong as she was when Ev was the ev we all fell in love with, but whats the point in continuing this argument?

I just want to jump in and say that I've always found Amy to be a great lyricist. I do personally think that her lyrics were deeper and much more metaphorical pre-TOD days, but she can write outstandingly just the same - she has (lyrically) written many of the old songs. Some of the greatest metaphorical lyrics I have ever heard just happen to belong to Breathe No More.
With TOD, I find snippets here and there in the lyrics of what I consider to be "deep". It's nothing compared to the times of Fallen/Origin, but still, they are there. Of course what I and others consider to be deep can be completely different things (Lithium, Good Enough, Like You, and The Last Song I'm Wasting On You all hit me so hard lyrically). But overall I believe the style of lyrics on TOD has changed because she was attempting something different, which ended up having such a diminished effect, not because she has no capability of writing and combining great words - she's already proven otherwise in that aspect.

I couldn't agree with you more Steph.
I have always thought the lyrics of every each song, is very deep, and powerful, she expresses so much feeling and emotion, its very real, and truthful. Like I have always said, Everytime I listen to one song, Its like I can feel exactly what she is feeling, and each song speaks in such a way, that I can understand, and feel what Amy had felt, and was going though. IMO...I will always honor, and cherish, and will always be just amazed of the amazing talent she truly has.

I'm definitely anxious for some new material from Amy, but I'd like to see her step away from Evanescence and work with other people. I'm happy with Fallen and TOD, but I feel like a lot of the tracks aim high but then end up being held back by such generic nu-metal/modern rock instrumentation. That, and they need another producer. The production on Origin was actually more interesting with its gritty, dirty goth vibe, Fallen and TOD are far too polished. It really lets Amy's vocals shine, but a different production technique would bring so much more to their atmosphere. Amy's got some tremendous talent, I'd love to see her work with some more innovative artists and really produce something great (and not Korn. Or Seether. Like, I think she was supposed to work with Maynard from Tool back in the day. That's fucking sweet.)
