Put what I really have to say... I think Amy is prettier. (I just couldn't hold it!)
They're both beautiful women in their own way. IMO anyway, some people say Amy's fat, and that Tarja has a wierd face. Those people are sillies and should not be listened to.

Haha. Me and my mom were testing our new stereos and when she putted radio on he yealled to me "hey! Tuomas is on radio! So sweet!". She is one big Tuomas-fan just because he's so finnish and... sweet. A man who stills lives with his parents (the time his own house is built) and so on.
Radio is good but images are needed. Yes oh yes.

And for the record my take on Amy VS Tarja is Tarja>Amy. Tarja has better control and all. I think if Amy got more training I may feel differently but as it stands... TARJA!

Another thing I just need to share with someone... I never noticed before in dead boy's poem ther's a lyric "everything a wish for the night." I never noticed that wish and night go together to make nightwish. I guess I'm just so used to seeing it as a whole word.

Me thinks we had one. Maybe it got wiped in the crash?

IDK why people are always comparing vocal ability. They are totally different. We can all agree that Tarja, Amy, and Sharon totally PWN most pop-star types. So do all other rock chicks like Shirley, Johnette, Pat, and Siouxsie (and poo on you if you don't know who I am talking about here).

Given that we are on EvBoard, i can imagine there being way too much "OMG, teh Ames is teh hotness and no one is better than her."

But seriously, to appreciate them all is the way to go, not to try to compare them. Some people may like Tarja's voice better, but overall like Ev's music better. Some people might like "My Immortal Amy" better than "Going Under Amy".

Ok, I'll shut up now. *hides*

*is offtopic as always* My mom always confuses Nightwish and Within Temptation =/
Oh well...she can't help it I guess, when she hears so many different names of bands all the time XD When I'm playing Nightwish she's like: is this that band of that beautiful song, eh....Within Temptation? And then I'm like: No this is Nightwish... and then my mom is like: oh

Quite funny

Amy Lee is a lyric mezzo soprano.

I´ve been listening to some of Tarja´s solo and classical work (e.g. Noches Escandinavas), she sounds somewhat in between dramatic and lyric soprano. Her natural voice is really lyric soprano, but she sings more in a dramatic style.

just to make things clear: about the shades:
Leggero (or soubrette): A sweet, lightweight voice whose range is mostly in middle voice. Plays comedic, saucy, but likable characters.
Coloratura: A light, acrobatic and high voice.
Full Lyric : A sweet, graceful voice, with range similar to that of the soubrette but with a stronger quality, and stronger upper register. Reserved for ingenues and other sympathetic characters.
obs: Lirico Spinto Soprano: A full lyric voice that can be pushed to dramatic climaxes. That´s the case of Tarja Turunen.
Dramatic : A powerful, rich, emotive voice. Used for the heroic, tragic, and/or victimized women of opera. Range from Bb3 or A3 to C6.
Profondo: a particularly deep and resonant voice. most distinguished by its dark and cavernous timbre. It´s a deeper shade of voice than the dramatic shade. It´s the lowest shade of an alto or of a bass. eg: alto profondo- Toni Braxton.

I´m a coloratura alto, which would sound like: Anne Nurmi of Lacrimosa (without the falsettos) ,Alicia Keys, Joss Stone.

Hmm. I might be leaning towards Lyric or Dramatic now. My voice teacher told me I was heading towards Coleratura a year ago and I can't recognize my own voice from six MONTHS ago, so I'll have to see her again and ask.

TYVM for the differences. I'm going to double-check them with my teacher, just because I'm like that, but thanks Made a lot of sense to me.

So Sharon from WT would be considered Coleratura? Her voice is very light and pure.

yes, Sharon is a soprano coloratura, Floor Jansen, Liv Kristine and Vibeke Stene(my avatar) as well.
Simone Simons sounds like a mezzo soprano coloratura for me.
Tarja is a lirico spinto soprano, it´s a subcategory of a lyric soprano.
Maria Callas, for her natural voice, would be a dramatic soprano, though she could sing quite high and in an acrobatic way too. that´s why they call her a dramatic coloratura soprano.
Melissa Ferlaak and Bjork are sopranos leggero.

about the altos:
alto profondo: Angela Gossow, Toni Braxton.
alto coloratura: Joss Stone, Annie Lennox, Anne Nurmi, Courtney Love, Shakira, Alicia Keys, Cher
alto leggero: Shirley Manson, Cristina Scabbia
