I'm totaly new here, I joined maybe three days ago. I haven't seen a welcoming commitee at all, Lol. I have, however seen alot of people getting picked on for being a "n00b"(true, most if not all deserved it) and alot of people talking negatively about the newer members. Kinda has me scared to post for fears of being laughed at, that's not a good thing

If i'm not mistaken, Megan you have to post an introduction thread to be assigned a member guide.
I've been here a little while but i still can't get up the nerve to post a thread of myself. I'd feel like a dork, i don't like being the center of attention.
But everyone here has been really nice to me, so go ahead. I haven't gotten picked on at all for being a noob, don't be scared of it. Quite the opposite really, some of the most well known posters said the nicest things to me. Just read through all of the suggested threads and you'll be fine.

You guys suck. I got a "baptism by fire" when I joined. There was no welcoming committee.

Just kidding. I think you are doing a great job welcoming the new members. If there has been a problem it has been with new people not following your adivice or direction.

On another note:

So even if the search function reveals the 456 page post that was made a year ago, you're left with the choice of being a post necromancer, making a new thread and risking getting flamed/locked/banned, or opting out of the discussion entirely. The last option kinda defeats the purpose of a fan forum though, doesn't it?

You have a point, but you also have to consider the members who have been here for a while. It is much easier for a new person to just do some research by browsing the old threads than it is to rehash the whole conversation/question/debate over again. 99.962743 % of the questions that could be asked have already been asked, and 111.329641 % of the possible answers have already been given. It just takes a little bit of reading, but I do understand how it might seem intimidating to a new person. Then again, you wouldn't walk into a business meeting on your first day on the job and start asking a bunch of questions that you were given the answers to before you applied.

someone once suggested a "n00b forum" and i think this would be a good idea. the n00bs could go there to discuss the things that the older members have already discussed.and to avoid post whoring we could always limit the amount of times they could post in one day or something like that. it might solve the problem about n00bs posting threads about things that have already been discussed(in the other forums, not the "n00b forum")

Why don't they just go start a whole new board then. I just don't see why it is so hard to go back and read what has been posted.

Think of EvBoard like High School.

If you're "the new kid" at first no one really pays attention to you, but after a while, you start to make friends and before you know it, you're having a great time (with your friends at least, no so much the actually learning part of school...unless you like that part too..) Anyway, I just went totally off in another direction. *gets back on track*

Yeah, at the beginning you're gonna feel ignored & stupid. Hell, when I first posted and no one responded to me, I totally felt invisible. But eventually you just kinda fall in to the community.

Same for me. We had to fend for ourselves. I really wish I had had the Welcoming Committee when I first joined to. When you're new, the mods tend to intimidate some people, so to actually know some of my "peers" that I could pm if I had any questions would have been great. Also, all the tips & suggestions that people have given are really helpful.

For me this was the thing that helped me the most. When I joined last July, I spent a good few weeks just reading all the older topics. I learned a lot that way. From that I also learned a little more about people and how things work in general.

The two things to remember: Search & Read ALOT

The thing I miss the most though was not knowing who that band members were and figuring it out for yourself. It took me a little bit of searching, but when I finally got them all, I was soo proud of me. Now it's so easy. They couldn't stand out any more then if their user names were actually just their names (like on the old boards)

i know what your getting at. i dont see why a lot of the n00bs dont read whats been posted either, but i was just saying, if there was a n00b forum, the older members wouldnt have to deal with the same questions over and over again. its kind of pointless to be discussing this though, because there isnt a way we can force anyone to read anything.

I was PMed by Head shortly after I made my introduction. I thought it was a very good idea and asked him a question I'd been sitting on that I wasn't sure who to ask. I've asked him a few questions and he's been quick to answer and very helpful.

Do you feel that more should be done in educating the newer posters (ie, you) on the board? If so, how?
I think as far as general message board etiquitte and posting features, this board seems to cover those pretty well (but my opinion could be biased since I'm not new to message boards in general), but when it comes to board announcements and news, it doesn't seem to me that most people would become aware of them. I think that's what the important information forum is there for and it's sort of a responsibility on the board to check it regularly (or when you think something is wrong), but when I noticed something was wrong (I tried to edit my signature and couldn't), it took me a while to figure out what had happened. The post that explained it was sort of buried in an older post about moderation requirements, so naturally I expected a new thread about it, not a note on the 14th (or whichever) page of an old thread. I think the mass IM feature is the most effective way of keeping members up to date, but I understand the need for space conservation on this board and the announcements forum is an obvious alternative. but I almost think changes like this should be mentioned on the front page, or there should be something that shows that there are, say, x unread announcements in the important info forum (this might be a difficult task but it's just an idea). I think it wouldn't hurt to be a little more serious with the announcements and just cut to the chase (the post about the IQ test comes to mind). Making new threads as soon as news happens and putting a date on the thread title would also be super helpful. I don't mean to be rude about this at all, I mean I haven't had any problems and I make sure to read as many pages of a thread as I can possibly stand to find out what's going on, but those are just my two cents about making things easier on newer members.

edit: you know, when I made this post I completely forgot about the news and announcements forum (I knew I'd eff up this post somehow). so twist this around and somehow make it apply to both important information and news and announcements. and I'll rephrase by saying the moderation thing should've gone in the news forum. oh I don't know, this was such a long winded post and I felt like an idiot writing it and I feel like an idiot now...

I think that's the only piece of discouragement I've run into so far but it's not really that big of a deal. If there's something that I really want to talk about I can usually manage to squeeze myself into it, I've got quite a bit of MB experience under my belt already. Thanks for the organized environment you guys provide here.
I agree, but really it just either makes what you have to say all the more important if it hasn't been said before, or makes you feel special if you've gotten to a thread before it hits that point. I imagine this cuts down the nonsense level quite a bit (well, that and the post moderation). but yeah, it's much easier to lurk on this board than to be an avid poster.

I did post in the 'introduce yourself' forum and I had many replies, but never a member of the welcome committee(post or pm). While this doesn't offend me b/c I now know how busy all of you are and I read in a lot of other forums to get my info when I didn't know anything. Now I am unmoderated and have helped some other "noobs", as they are called. I know you guys do a lot to keep the site running, you really do help the newer members when you give them answer to the repetative questions. Thank you.
