I believe things are a little different in the US. Over there, you have a register where you can look up on the web to see if any convicted child molesters live in your area. Over here, we don't have that.
Our pedophiles are moved into public housing, and the neighbours are not notified. They are often moved near schools and playgrounds.

Even though there are very strict conditions on these people when they are released, some people believe they should stay in prison for the rest of their lives.
The media often reveals the whereabouts of a convicted pedophile, and the public turn up shouting, waving banners, and throw rocks and bricks at the house, and drive the pedophile out of their town, where they are put in another house, again the media does some digging, again people turn up with rocks, and the whole thing happens again.

Now, because Australia doesnt have anything to tell us where a convicted pedophile lives, I would like to ask what should happen to these people?

They cant stay in prison forever, even though that would be preffered. Even though the crime they have committed is unforgivable, I believe that if they have served their time, it is time to let them into the community. As I said, there are very strict conditions applied here, which is the only reason I am okay with someone being released at all.
I cant stand it when I see on the news a convicted pedophile run out of one town after another, I think ' where are they supposed to go if no one wants them'?

IMO I think they should be left in peace, and the media should be prevented from revealing their whereabouts. The public has no right to threaten someone, no matter what they have done.
As long as the pedophile is being very, very closely monitered, I dont mind them being let out.
I am not sure if some sort of system like the US has will not prevent vigilante attacks, eithor. Does the system work in the US?

We have similar problems here in those cases. It shows up on the news every so often when a community learns about pedophiles in their area. It makes people unsettled, and at times, actual people in the community are FORCED out of their homes to make room for these criminals. People have a right to be angry, but it's difficult to try and integrate criminals back into society. So far, I'm not aware of too many successful attempts at it.

However, I'm not aware of how this is on a grand scale. I'm sure those pedophiles that do manage to reintegrate into society are very low-key, but I would also just assume that many of them continue to fight their urges and do actively pursue children again when they are given the opportunity. I don't think the vast majority of these people are rehabilitated properly at all.

@ Jane - there are a good many pedophiles released who are at 'high risk' of reoffending, and they often do, it's just a matter of waiting.
But we let them go because they have served their sentence - we cant keep them in prison because we think they will reoffend, see, we have to let them do it again.

And yes, most of the pedophiles are low key, it is mainly the high profile ones who get the media on their back.

i disagree with you kylie, the public should be noted when there is a risk to their children. personally anyone with a risk of re-offending should not be released or they should be castrated or steralised before release. yes they may deserve their right to be granted freedom after their term has been served but the people they hurt do not get their freedom ever from what was inflicted upon them.
how can you justify your belief that this sick bastards should be able to live in our community. would you when you are a parent be happy to have a peodophile living next to you? i highly doubt it

IMO....
One person who is put behind bars (Where they belong) there is a thousand
more just like them walking the streets.
But if they can get one by one off the streets, then they are getting
somewhere.
But yes, they go to prison, and do their time, and then are released.
I can tell you, if someone did that to my child....I would never feel safe
knowing their walking the same streets my child is.
As well lurking around where my child go's to school, because even the school
can only do so much, when they have so many other children to look out for.
The problem is.....there is just no place to keep them in the prison system.
They are so full to the max, and over filled.
Then the question I'de like to know......where do they go, when they keep
commiting the same horrific crimes, and just keep getting released?
