I agree. A lot of people seem to be arguing that Amy Lee is basically the band now, but as far as I know, Terry contributed a lot to this album, and John put in his two cents as well. The album isn't completely Amy, so the name of the band shouldn't be directed only at her.

Like so many others have done, I'm going to once again relate the band to a person. People come in and out of our lives all the time. They make contributions that shape us and help us to grow. Even people who were there from the very beginning eventually leave. And new people come along all the time, continuing to add their own contributions to our person. But as people leave and people go, contributing to different aspects of ourselves, we are always the same person at our core. Evanescence is like that. And I think Amy is the core of that person. So, relating it to that, while Amy isn't trying to and shouldn't do it alone, without her the band wouldn't be Evanescence anymore.

I can't believe no one has suggested the age-old "Amynescence" joke as a compromise yet.

In all seriousness, I think that the name should stay. Yes, it's a lot more about Amy now than it ever was, but Amy always got a lot of the attention. Even when Ben was in the band, looking back at old interviews, I feel like the media attention was split 60% Amy and 40% Ben. Half the time, people would refer to "Evanescence" as "she," not "they."

Yes, the guys haven't done much with the album (with the exception of Terry, in this case), but Evanescence was Ben and Amy from the get-go, and David as well for much of their early days. The other guys didn't do much on Fallen or Origin, either. John had one song (Taking Over Me) on Fallen, and he has one (All That I'm Living For) on TOD. Rocky had Tourniquet on Fallen, and nada this time around, as far as I know. Will had a couple of older songs, but nothing on Fallen or Origin, if I remember correctly. So the only real difference between then and now, purely in terms of media attention and music writing, is the absence of Ben. (I'm not saying that I like it, mind...I'm just saying that this is how it is to me right now)

Now, me...I love the guys. I really wish they had more of a part in the creative process, and I wish they got more attention. However, this is how it is, and nothing I think or say will change it. So I've just accepted that Evanescence is the way it is.

My opinion:

Evanescence should not be retired.

Yes, Amy is the only one signed under the name Evanescence, but the guys are all there with here playing with her and giving a large chunk of their time to this band.

Yes, there have been a few line-up changes, but John and Rocky where there since the begining of Fallen, and Amy didn't ask Ben and Will to leave, they chose to. Plus, John does promotions with Amy, and Amy refers to Terry as her new writing partner.

I could go on some more, but I don't see the point. And after re-reading this I think it sounds kinda mean, not trying to be lol, just what came to mind, I respect everyone else's opinion.

Just my little opinion

It's Still Evanescence. It's Still A Band. If amy Wanted to be a solo artist She would have left Evanescence. She is not pop like Avril or Ashlee Simpson or Kelly clarkson. 3 Horrible untalented singers and songwriters. Evanescence still has 3 Core members out of 5. Terry is better then Ben so thats a step up also imo.

There is really no reason to change the name. Hell, Megadeth is still a band, even though frontman Dave Mustaine is the only original member left. Unless the music goes in an entirely different direction, its still the same band. Plus if they changed it, everyone would just whine that they arent as good as Evanescence was.

No disrespect, but does it matter if the name ''Evanescence'' is ''retired'' or not? Honestly? Regardless of whether or not Amy or whomever changes the band's name is irrelevant seeing as though the music would still remain, and the music is what is important. The name is for show, and nothing but.

I definately do not think the name "Evanescence" should be retired. True, Amy has always gotten most of the publicity and was the co-founder of the band, but the guys do help her out every so often. For example, I have noticed that in most of the Ev interviews this year, such as the one at the MTV VMAs and the one on T-Minus Rock, that Amy was being interviewed along with John. Also, Terry has become Amy's new writing partner since Ben left and he had a hand in helping her produce the songs that are on The Open Door. Rocky has never had a hand in writing the songs, but he still does appear in the promo pictures, so that's something. Finally, in every single band in the world, there is always a member who gets most or all of the publicity from the people, and that member is usually the lead singer and songwriter.

I think most people here are misunderstanding the main point that the threadstarter wanted to show.

it seems the current state of Evanescence is mainly focused on Amy Lee, not the entire band. Sure a frontman/woman gets most of the attention in popular music but why should it be that way when during the Fallen era, it wasn't like that? What made the band so great was the rockish side of Ben (ie. catchy riffs, guitar solos) and Amy's vocals. Now the band is unbalanced and mainly focused on Amy.

it seems to me, most people who praise TOD only comment on Amy's vocals and extra piano parts.

so imo, should the name "Evanescence" be retired? well, i'll be lenient and accept that this might be some kind of one time only experimental album and the band isn't going the way of TOD's style for future releases.
