Should the name "Evanescence" be retired?

So I was flipping through the latest installment of The Open Door Discussion Thread (take 4), and came across a post that really intrigued me. I thought it could be in interesting thread of its own. I hope rayblueline doesn't mind me quoting his/her post:

Quote:
Personally, I've had The Other Door on pretty much constant play for the last four days and it has really grown on me. The key for me was taking a really close listen to the lyrics, especially on songs like Good Enough and Lithium.

The other thing that was helpful for me was to approach this as an Amy Lee solo album. I have to say, if there is one thing I'm most disappointed about this whole ordeal since Ben left is that they didn't retire the Evanescence name until the fates decide that a reunion was possible -- that's not something that I realized until hearing this music. Not the end of the world, of course, but I can't help but thinking that if this album was called Amy Lee: The Open Door and they moved even farther away from the Evanescence sound, it'd make things much more approachable by foregrounding the fact that this is a personal account of Amy's blossoming independence, if you will.

I also think that a few of these songs just need more work -- a trait pretty typical of sophomore offerings, really. You spend your whole life developing the material on your debut and then you get a year or two to come up with the material for the followup, so that's to be expected, I guess, but a little disappointing because Evanescence materialized out of nowhere with such a well-developed back catalogue. (If I only had Fallen as a reference point, I doubt I would be disappointed by this album -- but then again, if I only had Fallen as a reference point, I wouldn't be here.)

So I'm coming around, but I can't escape the feeling that The Open Door is half-cooked as an album. But I can't wait to see how this material is treated live because with a more thoughtful sequencing and a neccessarily more bare presentation, this could be really good, if not great.
So reading posts about how the new Evanescence sound is more Amy Lee centered than before, and that "Evanescence IS Amy Lee" does anyone think that Evanescence should retire it's name and go with something more like what rayblueline suggested? Afterall, "Evanescence" was Ben and Amy at conception, they chose the name together, Ben and Amy wrote the first material together - so now that Ben is gone, is it still "Evanescence"? Or is "Evanescence" the music itself and not the members in the band?

I thought this could be interesting to discuss, what do you guys think?

Say your dad buys a car when he's 18. over the years he has to change the motor, the wheels, the chair covers, the brakes as they break down and need replacing. Then when you're 18 he gives the car to you - is it still the same car or is it a totally different car now?

Should people just stop being so recalcitrant in their holding on to the past?

I don't know...I mean *technically* there still is a band.....

I guess I would still call them 'Evanescence' because Terry is certainly a major force in the whole music writing process. It just seems a little more involved, to me, than a solo colaboration with other artists.

My opinion: It's evanescence, but it is different evanescence.

Don't you think it's Amy's business? If there's still Evanescence, it shouldn't be. Period.

Amy IS Evanescence.

She's the only one who owns the name anymore from my understanding.

So what she chooses to do with it, is up to her.

lol, I've never even understood the whole new logo thing. Could someone please explain that to me?

I think they should keep the name. It's a kickass name. Plus, I had a hell of a time learning how to spell it, so I'd be pissed if they changed it on me.

Seriously, Evanescence has gotten famous while being Evanescence. In a commercial sense, changing the name would only bring confusion and possibly hurt sales. And Amy has ALWAYS been a focal point of the band, just now so more than ever. "Evanescence" still describes the band and what it stands for (unless they can't write any more tormented, depressed music after Good Enough), so the name should stay.

In fact, when Fallen was still fairly new, Ben Moody was asked what song really expressed the "essence" of Evanescence the best, and he picked "Haunted." If you notice, the creepy vibe present in Haunted is still present in many of the songs on TOD, which was written after his departure when Amy really took charge. It's the same band, only altered. Just like people change as they grow older but are still the same person, the band does the same thing, so it's still Evanescence.

I think it should be retired, they need to call themselves: Amy Lee and the guys playing the instruments and doing some of the writing among other things or what not because I was not in the studio to see who did exactly what, but I'm guessing that they did lyk something.

I want to see WU fitting that on a shirt and making it all fancy and shit.

p.s. Did Ben's presence make them more part of Evanescence than they are now?

The "A" got a longer tail. hehe

I believe that changing their name to Amy Lee is unesscessary. It would confuse some people. It would discredit the other members of the band who feel like they contributed more to this album than the previous one.. or at least I think thats what they've said
