So what's it like to be a n00b?
EvBoard can be a little scary, especially if you don't know the ropes. But we were all at one point in time, n00bs. So to make you feel a little more welcomed, this thread is for "older" evboard members to share their n00bish experiences with you and to give you a little advice on how to get by
![]() I first start lurking around EvBoard in May of 2003. My roommate was a member, so I decided to look around and check things out. At first, I was overwhelmed by all the rules and by how the mods seemed "so mean" since they were closing peoples threads left and right. The message board that I had posted on before seemed so much more laid back then EvBoard, so I wasn't use to it at all but everyone seemed so close and the people that weren't having their threads locked seemed to really enjoy being here, so I had to figure out a way to slowly ease myself in. I felt that EvBoard was more like a family. I knew that being the "n00b" I wouldn't be accepted right away, but that I would have to work into being "trusted" In July 2003, I finally got the courage to join. For about a month, I continued to lurk and tried to figure out what made mods close people's threads and what didn't. I started to use the search function and read up on older threads. After a while, and a better understanding of how things worked around here, I started replying to other people's threads and within a few months, I had even started a thread or two of my own. Things aren't really as evil here as they may seem sometimes. The mods have a tough jobs. There are only about 10 of them and 12,000 members here. That's almost 1200 people per mod (that is if all of those 12,000 actually posted). I would have to say that leadership-wise, this is one of the best board I have seen. Yeah, the mods may get snarky at times, but it's all in good fun. As you'll soon learn, we're a sarcastic bunch, but we really do love each other. Just take your time, and get your feet wet a bit before you jump in to pool head first. If you have any questions, about how the way things work around here, or if anything else pops up in your mind, feel free to PM one of the members of the Welcoming Committee and we'll try our best to help you out! ![]() ~Tracie LittleFairydotORG also put together an excellent tutorial that will tell you everything you need to know about where to look, who to contact and lots of other EvBoard info. Check it out below

Great idea, Tracie!
<-------My name's Karen, and I began my lurking career on the Official Evanescence Message Board (the O Board) when it was first launched. After that was shut down, I didn't get up the gumption to actually join a community until October of 2003, when I joined [e]. Let me tell you: I was petrified. I felt like I'd wandered into a bad neighborhood. There were drive by n00b slayings, and threads being locked by vicious, blood-thirsty though witty mods. It confused me to tears. I continued to lurk for fear I'd get flamed, because I had no idea how anything worked. My #1 fear was ToB, followed closely by Dev. There was no way in heck I wanted to have one of posts deemed worthless by either of them and be flamed accordingly. (Let it be known that my fear has turned to absolute adoration -- oh, if only I could lock threads with such pizzazz! ) I continued to lurk for a few weeks reading every FAQ section and thread by a mod I could find. When I finally started posting I knew what topics to avoid with a 10 ft pole and what was expected of me. It's really not that hard to fit in here. Most of the senior members are incredibly nice and welcoming, just know which lines not to cross. For example, if your thread is locked (and it happens to all of us, myself included) pm a mod about it or just weep quietly like I did. Starting an attack thread against [e] (as some individuals have done in the past) is not a means towards conflict resolution. Just remember the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.Welcome to [e] and have a great time! If you ever need anything or have any questions feel free to pm me! I'd be more than happy to help! As Jes said, we were all n00bs once!

<-------- My name is Chris. I have been on the boards since July of 2003. This is the first messageboard I've posted in in the 4/5 years I've been online. I understand that this board can seem a little intimidating with 12,000+ members, but if you know your way around here, you'll do fine.
My suggestions are to always search and read before you post. Wanna find out information about your favorite Evanescence song? Chances are you'll find something important about it. If you still can't find it, I'm always willing to help and you can PM me about some of your questions. I'll be honest and say that I don't know absolutely everything there is to know about them, but I know a lot. A lot more than the average fan. So don't hesitate to ask questions. If you're not sure about what to post, I'm also willing to help. Just don't post it on the board before you do because chances are 9/10 times it'll get locked. I've also got a post on the board about the easiest ways to not get yourself banned on this board. Read it. It'll save you from the dark. |

Okay. I'm not those members that has been here for over 500 posts or so, but my newbie experience is still fresh on my mind.
The name's Julia, but I go by Julz more. I joined in March 2004 when I found this site by-I-dunno-how. I joined right away hearing that the actual band members post here, and didn't read the FAQ right away or even used the Search button that much. I posted a little here and there, being a Lurker unsure of stuff. Two of my threads got locked in the first week, and the advice of using the Search button finally hit me in the head while backing off the wall behind me. Oh boy, does it help soooo much! And like the rest, I was freaked about the Mods, but accepted that they were pretty busy and won't always have the time to hold my hand and introduce me to every little thing. This is the real world, where you're independent. It teaches you to get along with strangers, and to be respectful. I also found it helpful to PM an older member for some answers on unanswered stuff that aren't in the Search or the FAQ or in any of the threads. Don't be afraid to ask when you've found nothing in all your resources. Everyone here's nice. They won't bite. If they do, our Mods will be sure to hackle them in chains and train them with a muzzle until they learn to play nicely. Take it from me: Soon you'll feel this place is a home that you might not have ever had, or an addition to your family. Have fun, take care, and luvness forever, ~Julz~ |

*cracks knuckles and looks at the n00bs evilly*
Hi, my name's Daniel, and I'm addicted to dwarf tossing. Shit, wrong meeting. I joined the board in December 03, when I was going through a myriad of personal problems. I kept my head fairly low to start off with, and like Tracie, I just lurked around trying to get my feel for the board. I was going through self esteem and depression at the time, so I rarely posted to keep myself 'safe' from these people on here. I got to know a few people on different messenger services, and so many people here helped me in more ways then I ever thought possible from an Internet message board. There are some fantastic people here, don't be too scared to talk to them personally. We all have our PM boxes and IM usernames under our pictures for a reason . And on top of all these lovely people, I met the sexiest, cutest, addmoreadjectivesofloveinhere girl who is the love of my life here. Anything tech related with the board or your computer, send your questions my way. If you are having problems with adware/spyware/virus/etcetcetcetcetc, you can have a read of the Adware thread, and if you are still having problems, post away in there. Someone will give you a hand. My personal three rules for the board that I applied when I was a n00b: a) Use proper English grammar. You don't have to be the perfect typist, but we do need to understand what you are saying. b) Make sure someone hasn't already said what you are going to say c) Just because this is an Evanescence forum, doesn't mean that's all we talk about. Post in the General Chatter section, let us get to know ya :d. They worked for me when I was a n00b. Last edited by Lirael : 04-19-2004 at 11:51 PM Reason: And now I forgot my baby! Crap! |

Hey, folks.
My name, rather obviously, is Head. I'm from Scotland. I swear too fucking much and I'm a cantankerous old swine, notorious drunkard and (if certain people are right about certain things) I'm going straight to Hell, no questions asked. ![]() I haven't much to add to what my distinguished colleagues have said before, except a couple of golden droplets of wisdom - 1) Not a new point, but one I'll emphasise over and over... Don't use your keyboard like it's a mobile phone; it's really not that hard to spell words in their entirety and this "AIMspeak" really just gets on everyone's tits. Trust me, you're taken a lot more seriously if you show you can communicate effectively. 2) Don't be too keen to tell other people off... we've got mods for that. There will be occassions where you just can't help yourself and that's fine from time to time, but it's not a good idea to point out people's shortcomings too much. 3) We're a family here. This doesn't mean that it's all group hugs and shit like that - there will be fights and squabbles occassionally - but there's a fabby, glowing. lovin' vibe behind it all. Spread the love. Hell yeah. Seeya around, folks. ![]() Oh yeah, and Sariala is a perfect being. Do what she does.

I'm Ingrid.. the username kinda tells that...
My noob experiences is kinda simular to Tracies here, I started lurking here in May, then I decided to sign up, but didn't post much the first month. Then I started posting a lot, I made a lot of friends, and most of my good online friends are people I've met through this board. The best advice to noobs is to just lurk around for a while, figure out how the board works, and don't get pissed just because a mod closes your thread. There are times when threads are closed for stupid reasons imho, but that isn't really that often. And no wonder the mods get annoyed with people at times when you see them same thing happen over and over again, yet no one seems to learn anything, or listen to what the mods tell you. |
