Text based MMO's

Anyone know any good text based MMO's? I started with Utopia but its too disorganized in my opinion.

Do you mean like a MUD game? *isn't sure what MMO is...*

Or only a website-based one (like Utopia, as you mentioned)?

Oh.My.God. I'm so glad someone finally started this thread, because I didn't know if I should do it or not, and I needed a new text based MMO too.
Gemstone IV is a GREAT one, but it's really expensive. :/ I had a free trial for a month and fell in LOVE! I'm going to subscribe eventually. So far, that's the best one I've tried, but like I said, it's only if you don't mind paying.

$15 really is not that expensive, though it's a higher subscription price than some of the graphical games out there. Which is sort of ironic.

I'm surprised someone mentioned GemStone... I have so many memories wrapped up in that game dating back to about 1995. I was playing that game when I was around 10, except then it was GS3. I got in trouble a lot; sometimes I'd play the "HI I'M 10 YEARS OLD" and would get a slap on the wrist and be sent on my way. I was such a pimp in that game that I was engaged to a 30-something year-old woman before I went on hiatus from the game briefly and came back to discover her whore ass had moved on to some guy named Thorolf. YEAH I STILL REMEMBER. Funny thing is that her name eludes me at the moment, but I still remember the guy's.

I stopped playing it once their other main text-based game, DragonRealms, came out. That's really good, but has a steep learning curve associated with it. I had a level 50-something Cleric (caps b/c that's how it is technically... *nerd*) that took me about a year and a half of consistent playing to achieve. The downside to the two games is that they're extremely time intensive--many of the highest level characters have been around for years and years, even dating back to the games' inception. And the games are really only fun when you can beat shit down and assert your authority onto other players.

A lot of players think the company overall is an asshole, but they do have to be commended for maintaining their position as the maker of the text-based genre's only popular games. There's many others out there but they don't have near the fanbase or depth that GS/DR do.

Another really good game they make that has a significantly narrower audience than the other two games is a game called Modus Operandi, in which you play the role of detective and get to apprehend criminals. That game's littered with whores though, because almost every woman has omg a curvy figure, tan skin, sparkling [green/blue] eyes, etc., and of course has little to no clothing.

When I played that game I broke the mold by making a black badass named Laquifah who rolled ebonics like nobody's business. She was quite well known in the short time I played. :O

And so was my Cleric in DR. Except she wasn't black. She was a religious fanatic. *could go on and on*

Well there is a 30-day free trial period for both games. Most free ones aren't very good, I don't think. I've played maybe one free one and wasn't interested for more than like 10 minutes. I've found most text-based games do have a steep learning curve, though--maybe I'm just retarded. But then again I played text games @ 10 years old so maybe not. :O

P.S. This thread inspired me to play GS again.

You see Evanesti.
She appears to be an Aelotoi.
She appears to be very young and shorter than average. She has stormy green eyes and pale skin. She has waist length, straight black hair. She has a round face and a birth mark. She has a pair of crystal green wings.
She is in good shape.

OMG IT'S AMY LEE!

(is jealous) I LOVE gemstone so hard.
I miss it
As soon as I can, I'm going to subscribe.
My name on there was Tilathia. I was awesome. I got in trouble for kicking the guard and they stole all my stuff so people gave me all of theirs. They loved me hardcore.

Uhh, it's an online thing so if you want to play you can. I don't think the url is just gemstone though, so you would have to google GSIV or something. And it's extrememly fun.

*still unclear on what MMO actually means*

As far as this Gemstone goes... is it ONLY text-based? Or is it one of those that show pictures every once in awhile?

Anyway...has anyone here EVER played a MUD game? Because Gemstone sounds just like that except as a browser-based game (assuming that you do not have the option to use applicatons such as SimpleMU or zMUD).

And if anyone has problems finding a good, free MUD - here is the best ever - at least, the best that I have ever come across. And I've played a lot. It's extremely original, something that a lot of MUDs are...not.

Of course, I highly suggest downloading a non-browser application (such as SimpleMU) instead of clicking that link. Much better that way. If you've played MUDs before, then you most likely know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, then you most likely don't. If you're of the latter group and are interested in playing and have no idea what I'm saying, just ask and I'll help.

:)
