I liked Elizabeth but I like Mr.Darcey too. Maby a bit more after elizabeths refusal becaus I felt bad for the guy. I can relate to him a bit because I have trouble socializing too. Like him no one realy know what a good person I can be until I feel comfotbale enough with them. He's probably more sensitive then it seems and elizabeth turining him down must have crushed him. Poor guy
Did anyone else find it ironic that turned down Mr.Darcy because he was too pridefull when shes refused two marraige offers so far. She turned down both Mr.Collins and Mr.Darcy as if she didn't think they were good enough for her. Isn't that pride? I think Mr.Bennet is an awesome father. Kind of reminds me of my dad. I loved how he told the girls he had met with Mr.Bingly while they were all making a big deal over him NOT doing it. It was great. The hole book was. I loved it. |

I found the book a bit hard to get into, but after while I did and really enjoyed it though I kept on imagining the scenes from the movie in my head...
Allius, I agree about Elizabeth was being slightly prideful, but that was probably intentional (the title being PRIDE and prejudice and all) |

yeah, it's part of the irony. it was originally titled first impressions, which would have worked as well, but pride and prejudice is just a little bit better. elizabeth was initially hurt by mr. darcy's comment about her being decently attractive, but not enticing enough for him to ask her to dance. so, her pride being hurt, she drew upon a slight prejudice against the snobby, rich uperclass. she thought him to be a proud man with little regard for others. obviously she was wrong. darcy did have him moments of pride and prejudice also. simply put, he broke up jane and bingley even though their love was quite genuine. he thought because of mrs bennet and the lack of expression of love from jane meant they were just after bingley's money.
the best part is they are both able to over come their own prejudices and put aside their pride. lizzy was lucky in that darcy proposed a second time. the first time you can see darcy is trying to overcome him pride, but his speech is a little off. i mean if someone were to propose to you like that and you thought he ruined your sister's best chance at love and hurt a man you thought to be a good one, you would probably reject him in such a manner too. and let's not forget the personality lizzy has. that just fuels her feelings toward darcy after his first proposal. the way it all works out though is great. im a sap, but the book is amazing. id read it again if it didnt take so long and i had so little time. |

I never really picked up on elizabeths own pride!!! shame on me!
i would love to read the prequels there is also one set a year later at pemberly, i didn't know about the one mentioned by fearless 15. i will look for it. we could try another period book or go for something different. i mentioned kathy reiches the first book is deja dead also with planned release of the tv series bones based on the character of temperance (and containing angels david borneaz)i thought maybe it would worthwhile to read the book also i have an extra motive as i want to read the series (i started but stopped) i never read the first book i started with the 2nd. A superb new writer introduces her intrepid heroine to crime fiction. Dr. Tempe Brennan, a trowel-packing forensic anthropologist from North Carolina, works in Montreal's Laboratoire de Medecine Legale examining recovered bodies to help police solve missing-persons cases and murders. It's clear to Tempe that the remains of several women killed and savagely mutilated point to a sadistic serial killer, but she can't convince the police. Determined to prevent more brutal deaths, she sleuths solo, tracking her quarry through Montreal's seedy underworld of hookers, where her anthropologist friend Gabby, doing her own scary research, is being stalked by a creep. Despite her ability to work among fetid, putrefying smells that "leap out and grab" and her "go-to-hell attitude" with seasoned cops, Tempe is as vulnerable as a soft Carolina morning. When a grinning skull is planted in her garden, her investigation turns personal. Except for imparting an excess of lab information, Reichs, also a forensic anthropologist, drives the pace at a heady clip. A first-class writer, she dazzles readers with sensory imagery that is apt, fresh, and funny (e.g., "fingers felt cold and limp, like carrots kept too long in a cooler bin"). Recommended for all fiction collections, this read is sure to be in demand. so people what do you think? if not what are your suggestions

ahhh sorry I'm late to the discussion...I was busy all yesterday, but here's my two cents:
First off...it took me about 90pages to get into it. I had a really hard time picturing the characters. But once I got past that I thouroughly enjoyed the book. I'm well out of High School and I know this book is typically assigned then, so I felt like for a long time I'd missed out on this book. And I needed a little motivation to read it...so thank you book club ! Also a question...there were many names or towns that Jane Austen had in the book that were spelt with a big dash in front...like ----shire...or something like that. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what was the purpose of that? And one last question...I want to see the movie to this book, but I'm the type of person that hates seeing movies where it does the book no justice. Sooo which version of the movie do you all recommend? which one stays true to the story line? Anyways, I'm fine with the Davinci Code and have already started it...but if we decide to switch that's cool too. Are we going to have discussions every few chapters? or do it like P&P again? Ohhh and ~river~ that book seems intriguing....I'm all for whatever we choose! Last edited by Jade19 : 05-14-2006 at 05:38 PM. |

i dont remember exactly what my teacher said but i think it has something to do with the land and the owners of it. like each of the estates fits the chacters. pemperly is rich and sophisticated without being ostentacious (sp?) just like darcy.
the dashes in front means it could be any land anywhere. it doesnt really matter what the name is. i loved the book andi loved the recent pride and prejudice - the one with keira knightley. though it differs from the book slightly, it was quite enjoyable. the us/canada version has a short scene at the end that wasnt shown anywhere else because it wasnt in the book. it seems a little rushed/faster in the movie (the relationship/events)- according to other people who have seen it. but i thought it was fine. |

To recommend a new book, how about a book called 'The Gift' by Alison Croggon? Its the beginning book in a fantasy series and is like my favourite book! It's almost like LOTR but with a female main character, its got magic and creatures and all the usual fantasy stuff...
I think it's really well written and would be good to discuss. |

there's dashes cause, at the time she wrote the book, the richer families owned decent parts of each county, so it was to avoid maybe offending one of them. as for the movie, out of the series/movies, i really prefered the BBC drama-series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. and hated the American ending to the Kiera Knightly one, the European ending was lots better. and what i loved the most about the book, is that it tells you what happens to them after they're married, etc about all the sisters and such. |
