I think it's written in the view of a person who's been wallowing in a state of complete apathy, and maybe even depression for quite a considerable time in their life, going through daily routines and stuff without really appreciating and acknowledging everything around them, and as corny as it sounds, the beauty and the pointlessness-ness (lol-basically how UN-pointless life is) of life.
They then find someone who jolts them back 'awake', shows them there is so much more to life and being than just being empty and zombie-like, and someone, as Katya said, who understands them and who they can find solace in (I do kind of think it was about loving someone as well-though the inspiration of for the song wouldn't quite fit if she was writing it about that too, but still, she probably wasn't only writing about that certain experience). This person opens their eyes to new emotions, feelings, ways of appreciating who they are than anyone they've met before. |

*cracks knuckles*
here's my spin on BMTL. Are y'all ready? hehe Anyhow...ok, someone is just going through the motions of life and doesn't really connect with anything. Maybe they are in a suckass situation and can't get out, or think they can't and want/need help. They want to be woken up from the world they are living in because it's so empty and cold, and yearn for something that they hope exists(which would be a more fulfilling life). Going through the motions of life and not being satisfied leaves a person feeling really really empty, and this song really gets that point across.

Wow, thank you CFW, for putting my plan into works. I really didn't know if anyone else would think this was a good idea or not, it just...appealed to me, so yeah. :)
So about the song... When I first heard Bring Me to Life, I was going through some pretty major issues. I still am a little, but moreso when this song first came out on the radio. But anyway...when I first heard it, the way I took it is that someone is in a horribly bad situation, and is searching for the strength to get out. Now when I hear it, I take it that it's someone who is emotionally lost, suffocating inside themselves, in their own despise of who they are. They are distant from the world, and unconsciously push love and hope away. It's supposed to be a shield, to prevent being hurt again. Then finally someone comes along that truly understands, and shows them the beauty that lies within them, and the life they are missing out on. In this slight breath of air, they catch a glimpse of everything, and realize that their soul had been sleeping for so long in a far, cold and distant place, and now will do anything to get out of it and breathe in life again. So...that's BMTL applied to my life. :)

Last April, 2003, i had to wake up at 6 for school. So i got all ready and sat down, drinking a cup of coffee and watching MTV music videos. Rap, as always. But then...a strange video came on that I had never seen..I thought it was pretty cool...but didn't think much of it, even though i had the song burnt into my brain that day. Morning after morning i would see it every day, finally learning that it was Bring Me To Life, but i kept forgetting the name of the band..I finally, after hearing it on the radio, realized it was Ev.. so on June 12th, I purchased Fallen and went crazy from there. that story is probably the best intro to Ev. No one can top it.

Bring Me To Life
What Bring Me To Life means, applied to my life
When I first heard the song, I was in a relation in where I was going nowhere. Like, immersed in a routine, and tired of it. I won't say feeling nothing, but, pretty close. is like when you find no interest in things, no joy, but you're sort of afraid of moving on and finding something new, that you could enjoy. But, then I did find something new. Someone new. Is like someone comes and opens both your eyes and heart. And, you're no longer afraid of feeling, but you need that person to stay with you. So much time so far away from yourself but, with time, I believe it's no longer Bring Me To Life, but Now Don't Kill Me, if you leave me... Anyway, that's my interpretation of Bring Me To Life in my Life Great Idea Steph ! (and cfw828)

Firstly, I must say that I think BMTL is a phenomenal song, and I honestly think that if there were a list of the top 100 songs in history, it would be on there.
Okay, everyone has made it more than clear about what Amy has said about the songs meaning, and even the quote in my sig is actually about the song, so ill tryin be brief and not repeat what has been said. I think this song is about falling into a routine of mediocrity and misery, becoming cold without even realizing it, and then having an epiphony. Caused by someone or something, that brings you to the surface again and breathes new meaning into life. Where you feel more alive than you've felt in a long time and you begin to see new depth in your days. Somehow, something has helped you break a cycle of suffering, and you begin to really feel again, appreciated each breath and siezing each day. I probably just rephrased what's been said already here, hopefully ive made contribution.

i think it is about believing that you are all alone, and no-one thinks quite the same way as you, and becoming withdrawn etc. but then one day realising that "you were there in front of me" and someone was there who understood and could be there for you. then seeing the world in all its colour, and not believing how it could never be like this before. then, "now that i know what im without, you cant just leave me here" because you dont want to go back into that black void, but become to rely on them to be the light for you.
thats how i take it, although that is pretty much repeating what others have said i think. |

I think BTML is about somebody who has been really disappointed with life and people in general, has always been treated rather badly and has shut herself up and become a ghost, a soulless puppet. She has lost hope of ever being loved and accepted as who she is, she's maybe depressed and a very dark person. Then she meets somebody, and sometimes I think she doesn't even actually meet that person, she just sees him around, learns things about him but maybe can never reach him. But he wakes something up in her, she begins to find what real world and life can be like, she's always been inexperienced and cut-off from the world, maybe more by herself than by anybody else and doesn't know what the life she threw away was really like.
The song has this kind of sad and desperate tone, I figured it was because there is romantic love involved for this person finally, but it might still not be the kind of love that she gets returned. Waking up, I think, can be understood as a growing up thing, even, you know, sexually. If nobody has ever loved you, if you've just been a shadow all your life and suddenly something like love wakes up within you, it's a very powerful experience, but also horrible if you know/fear that your feelings can never be fulfilled and returned. You know now what you're without. Well, that's my amateur interpretation. I really love finding hidden meanings everywhere ![]() |

Teh Twistedness
I agree with a lot of the interpretations on here, but I have another one.... This is what I thought after seeing the video for the millionth time and after a dream that I had.
Somebody has been asleep all of their life and has been searching for meaning and something to hold onto. They finally find it in somebody and long only to be with that person.... but their love is unrequited. BMTL has a desperate tone to it, which is why I think this. The lines, "now that I know what I'm without, you can't just leave me" feel like this girl has now had a breath of life and could never go back to the numb person that she used to be. She has to be with this person, but he doesn't love her back. And so she tells him that he can't leave her and asks him to bring her to life. Finally, he sees that she needs him, but it's too late to help her. (("All of this time, I can't believe I couldn't see + Kept in the dark, but you were there in front of me")) It's too late for both of them, and they both know that. And so a part of her dies but still begs to be brought to life. It's hard to put it into words... but yeah. |
