I think october is about:
She is trying to deny her feelings for someone and she can't... (I can't run anymore I give myself to you.) The song is very apologetic.. so she may be aplologizing to someone (it has been discussed elsewere that it may be God.) |

For me, October is about a deep personal relationship with either GOD or a very special person (read: lover). This could also be about children, as I find it very comforting in times of need, when I can't be near my children. This song is very personal, and I feel it would be an excellent song for a church service during the invitation.

to me, october is about amy giving in to either a very special person, or God. she's been running away from them, trying to ignore them, but she's suddenly realised that she can't live, can't go on without them, and she's sorry for running away.

A New Angle to Interpretation
Again, I'd like to quickly reiterate my gratitude to CFW for running a great thread, cause lyrics and meaning is huge to me and I enjoy expressing myself on this thread. So I tip my hat. *tips hat*
October has gotta be one of my favorite Ev songs because it's just this rising action, melancholy anthem. As Amy has said before, sometimes sadness is beautiful. It's, i think, evanescence's longest song and just has this strong acoustic side and this bittersweet strength to it. You can just put this song on, and mellow out. OKAY, this song actual brings me to an interesting point that has always haunted me and that I'd like some feed back on. This thread is for posting your particular thoughts on a song, so just PM me if you have any thoughts on my next point instead of raising a debate here. So please tell me what you think of this, and, well, hear me out please... Amy and Ben met at camp when she was 13. Amy's inspiration for a lot of Fallen was an abusive three year long relationship that ended a little while before Fallen was written. In interviews I've heard her talking about how she was in denial at some points in the relationship and BMTL was partially inspired by her awakening from that. She's also showed some contempt for her amatuer work in interviews and has said she likes Fallen better. She also detests the public existence of the song 'you', cause likely it bears feelings she doesn't have anymore or regrets, was stolen, and has become very taboo on the board. So Amy and Ben knew eachother, and were likely writing, during her tough relationship. Also Amy writes things that are really close to her and expresses her deepest thoughts. So, wouldn't it stand to reason that some of the old demos we listen to were written while Amy was in denial in this relationship? Perhaps while she was dependant on this bad boyfriend and didn't want to lose him? Because during this 3 year period, I'm certain she was still making music. What I'm getting to, is that perhaps October is about her boyfriend while she was in denial. She offended him or thought she almost lost him, and being in this headspace, looks to him in defeat and looks to him for strength. Maybe Amy now would quiver upon hearing this song, because it was about feelings that she regrets and has long since outgrown. Because she has said before that Fallen was largely inspired by this relationship, and that it was a hard album to tour behind because she's grown so much since she wrote it. She's even mentioned a song currently titled "The Last Song I've Wasted on You", which I've read is about moving on and giving no more thought to her bad ex. So, I'm just saying that the above should be taken into consideration when wondering what Amy was actually writing about as we interpret the older works of Evanescence. Because she's said that she became at artist when she was 6, and was writing with Ben since she was 13, and she has gone through a lot between then and now. I think that probably, some of the older works we listen to were written during this relationship and that Amy would currently be bothered by what she was thinking when she wrote them. It could have, in a sad way, inspired October and other songs. Just a thought. It occured to me a while ago and i wanted to get it off my chest. I might be completely off-base, and don't debate inside this thread. Please just PM me with any input. Thanks.

Interesting point, KeyStone. I hadn't really thought of it that way.
I personally interpret it as either a relationship with a lover or with God. I lean more towards God, especially because of the line "I fall into your abounding grace," which seems to be more about God than a lover.

You know, KeyStone...that makes an awful lot of sense and I never thought about it that way before.
I thought of it as coming from having a fight with your significant other, and deciding to cool it off for awhile (where you both loved each other but this fight was huge). I look at this song as an apology and explanation, also a declaration of love. She is regretting the fight ("I'm sorry, I'm sorry"), and regretting the split that they had coldly agreed upon ("Though I tried to forget/You're all that I am"). She either realizes or believes (or both) that the fight was her fault ("In all my bitterness/I ignored what's real and true") and says that she's still in love with him ("All I need is you"). She misses him dearly and wishes that they could get back together. ("All the times I've tried/To walk away from you/I fall into your abounding grace/And love is where I am") She tried to get over him, but realized that in the end, she still loves him just as much as she did before the fight ("Constantly ignoring/The pain consuming me/But this time it's cut too deep/I'll never stray again") And the chorus is her declaration of love to him. I think it's beautiful how it combines the "I love you so much" with the "I tried to get over you and I just freakin' couldn't" lol. I like KeyStone's analysis of it a lot, too, though. |
