I'm probably not the best person to recommend an album especially as I don't have much of The Gathering's stuff but the album that really, really got me into The Gathering was Sleepy Buildings, because it kind of shows a few of their songs on completely different levels to the versions on the other CDs.

Which album to start with may depend on your musical taste. Mandylion is the most metallic of the Anneke era albums, although it's still pretty mello by metal standards. After that album, they moved away from the metal genre. How To Measure a Planet, If_Then_Else, and Souvenirs are trip-rock (as the band calls it) albums with a lot of electronic effects mixed with more traditional rock elements. The first album I bought was Mandylion and it ties closely with How To Measure a Planet as my favorite. I just got Souvenirs and Sleepy buildings so I'll post my opinions on them when I've listened to them a few times.

Just to let you guys know, the tracklist for A Sound Relief has been released. The DVD will include the song "Alone" which will most likely be featured on the new album. Other songs include "Broken Glass". "A Life All Mine", "Amity", "In Motion II", "Souvenirs", and "Like Fountains", among others.
The DVD is expected to be released on the 20th October. |

'Mandylion Deluxe Edition' To Arrive In November
Century Media will celebrate the 10th anniversary of THE GATHERING's "Mandylion" album by releasing a special deluxe edition of the CD on November 21. The double CD set features new artwork, a 16-page booklet with song-by-song liner notes from the band and never-before-seen photos from the album's recording sessions. CD2 contains the first demo recordings THE GATHERING did with vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen in June 1994 and early 1995. "Solar Glider" is a previously unreleased instrumental while "Third Chance" appeared two years later in a different version on the "Nighttime Birds" album.
"Working with THE GATHERING on this album is one of my most beautiful memories. To record with such an open-minded band like them... they'd need three sounds when other bands needed 100, and those three sounds were enough to create a gorgeous atmosphere," stated "Mandylion" co-producer Siggi Bemm. "Mandylion Deluxe Edition" (2CD) track listing: CD 1 – Mandylion: 01. Strange Machines (6:04) 02. Eléanor (6:41) 03. In Motion #1 (6:56) 04. Leaves (6:01) 05. Fear the Sea (5:49) 06. Mandylion (5:01) 07. Sand & Mercury (9:57) 08. In Motion #2 (6:07) Total running time CD 1: 52:36 CD 2 – Demos: 01. In Motion #1 (7:28) 02. Mandylion (4:42) 03. Solar Glider (instr.) (4:35) 04. Eléanor (6:38) 05. In Motion #2 (7:18) 06. Third Chance (5:53) 07. Fear the Sea (6:29) Track 1 - 3: Beaufort studio (June 1994) demo Track 4 - 7: Tilburg, Double Noise studio (early 1995) demo Total running time CD 2: 43:03 Total running time both CDs: 95:39 I just found this on Blabbermouth. I was already wondering why there was no Mandylion demo-stuff on Accesoires. Well this explains I guess. I'm quite curious about these early recordings. However I think it would have been better if CM released it as a single cd with just the demo's or together with Accesoires, because this will just be bought by the die hard fans who already have Mandylion. |

Ah, this was posted on the cyclingcolours forum too (I'm mylastbreath on there). I always get quite annoyed at things like this when I already have the original CD because I hate buying things twice!
