So here's the deal. I think the feeling of something missing comes from her putting up an emotional block when she performs. It seems like when she is first creating the music and writing her lyrics the block isn't present... it is a true emotional release which is why her music is so powerful in the first place. However when she records it or performs on stage... I get the feeling like she is singing someone else’s song. As if she emotionally detaches herself from her own art and puts on an "act" to perform it. Maybe it's just me but I always feel like she sings VERY well and always has a lot of energy, but her performance is also devoid of emotion.. or the emotion she tries to express is being faked.

Maybe some other people can chime in if they have felt what I am talking about...

Also the problems that she writes about, and how she deals with them are pretty much the same as when she first started creating music... and a lot of time has passed since then. She has a tendency to be hurt easily, which is fine and is something that everyone can relate to, but she often reacts to being hurt by holding anger, and writing about how terrible it is instead of how she overcame it or became a better person through it. This is something that most people find as they get older... it's what matures people.

...
Interesting comments you have here. This is the first time I really think about it this way. It's true though, I do think she detaches herself on some songs, however there are songs where I feel a direct expression (Like You, Hello)
I feel the whole Open Door thing was already a move away from the wallowing in grief thing, although I don't think it was altogether convincing. I don't really know the point of CMWS...I didn't find it powerful.
Evanescence lost their identity with TOD, in my opinion. I liked the CD at first, but grew tired of it soon. In fact, some songs now again take significance for me, but never to the same extent as when I heard Fallen for the first time.

I think you're right about Amy's talent...but I also think she has not handled the real life situations particularly well...and it's showing in the band breakups, etc. Who am I to judge, though, I don't know what really went on or whatever, but that's what it seems like anyways.

the same thing happened to me the first time I listened to the album. especially with good enough. but now I love all of the songs and can even play some of them on the piano.

The first time I heard The Open Door I admit I was disappointed, except with a few songs, Lacrymosa, Snow White Queen, Sweet Sacrifice. I knew that I would love the album if I just kept listening to it and I did grow to love it. I've known all the words to all of the songs for a long time now and although TOD is DIFFERENT I still like it. I'm trying to understand why some people hate it so much. I'm going to go read some of the older posts and see if I can figure it out. If anyone has a specific thing they didn't like, please can you tell me what and why? I'd like to hear your opinion and I'm not going to fight you over it.

I didn't hate it. Hate is such a strong word, but I didn't like it at all. I thought the lyrics, on the whole, were very juvenile and amateur. The music itself was no where near as developed and intense as it was on Fallen. It seemed like much of the guitar-based music took a huge backseat to Amy's vision. I also felt like many of the songs were repetitive; the same concepts/wording were repeated in lots of the songs.

I also didn't care for all the effects on her voice, it seemed like the album was overproduced in the sense that it wasn't raw enough. I can hear her soul in her voice on Fallen and Origin, but there is no soul in TOD. The main thing that just really bugged me about the album was the amateur lyrics. We all know she's a better songwriter than that, but I also feel like Terry was no where near the musical partner that Ben was. I understand she was moving away from metaphors and trying to just use straightforward language, but you can do that without sounding like a 13-year-old.

Generally, I also found timing on some of the songs awkward. I couldn't come to terms with musical choices in why she would sing things a certain way, why they chose to have certain instrumentals, it just didn't make sense to me and didn't come together the way I feel an album should come together.

That's what I remember from when I first listened to it. I listened to it when I got it the first day it came out and then for a couple weeks after I had it in my car, but I definitely stopped listening to it before October was through, and I haven't touched the album since. I just didn't care for it; it was okay, but I only listen to music that has an impact on me, and TOD was not that kind of music. But I'm sure my first post in this thread about it was much more specific... I can only remember the after-effects now.

Myself, I truly think the OPEN DOOR album is incredable!
Every song is very well written, and well thought out.
They actually took all the time to write it.
When I first found out, "Good Enough" was becoming a
single, I was surprised, but I am glad it did.
Amy found happieness, and has been able to overcome so
many hard challenges in her own life, and can now move on
with her life.
She is incredably talented, an amazing song writer, vocalist
and singer.
I think she is a huge inspiration, as well an amazing role model
to youngsters.
Amy, Evanescence <3333

I am listening to The Open Door right now, I actually based a fan fiction on one of the songs on the CD "Cloud Nine". I will say that The Open Door is not better then Fallen or Origin but I still like it and I still listen to it. Thanks for your opinion, Jane, I don't agree with what you said but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Keep in mind too that all of my opinions/comments are based on looking at TOD in comparison to Fallen. Obviously, I had expected the same talent from Fallen on TOD.
