What do you think of Linux/UNIX?

In a place full of Ev freaks, I think it will be great to finally talk about computers... and about its best part - about Linux!

Express your opinions!

Linux! YES. I use Linux sometimes, I switch off between that and Windows, but I'm thinking of switching over completely. I used Linux exclusively for about three months and I loved it. It's much more robust and stable than Windows, but the lack of certain applications is inconvinent sometimes. For a development situation it's ideal though. Personally, I use Slackware, but I've also used Red Hat 9. I felt that Red Hat is a little too flashy and bloated, but that's just me. Menus belong in resturants. I like KDE as opposed to GNOME or BlackBox.

Linux isn't completely without it's own problems but compared to XP it's rock-solid and stable. The only machine at work that I have running Linux is a 400Mhz CPU which routinely blows the doors off much faster computers running Windows XP. At work I use the Slackware distribution and the KDE desktop but at home I use Knoppix. I haven't been using Linux that long so I'm still learning some cool things about it. As for the lack of applications, I've heard that OpenOffice will run on it just fine. Haven't tried it yet to confirm that though.

PS- If you're not familiar with OpenOffice, goto http://www.openoffice.org

Well considering it's running this website, we should all love it ! But seriously, it's ok, it's a bit of a PIA sometimes, and since I run the support/datacenter department of a company with 19,000 linux servers, I feel I'm qualified to say that.

I enjoy Linux, spent about a year using it as my primary operating system (no, I do not believe it is ready for prime time) and am currently using MacOS X and loving that.

You're clueless. Think *BSD, Darwin, or MacOS X.

I'm afraid you're incorrect, not only does linux have a desktop environment for home use, but MacOS runs on a BSD ( unix OS ) back end.
