What do you think on cover songs ?

An artist has a very personal song. It is very dramatic, about a rape of the first singer. This other artist sang it live on stage. The fans are very upset.
How would you feel if someone covered Amy's Hello or Like You.
I would not like if anyone even got close to these songs. For me they are HANDS OFF. Please tell me how you feel.

I feel like a cover is a sign of respect, both for a specific song and for the original artist. It's a tribute to the artist. A cover says "Hey, I love this song so much that I want to play it myself and share it with my fans. I love this artist, so I want to share him/her/them with my fanbase and give them more exposure, because they deserve it."

You brought up Hello and Like You. Consider this: What if Jennifer Hudson heard one of those songs, and decided she wanted to cover it? What if she, like so many of the other fans who have stories of feeling like the lyrics of Fallen's songs spoke to them, identified with the message of the song? She's lost her mother, brother, and nephew all in a single day. They were murdered. Would you tell her she couldn't sing Hello or Like You live to express her grief? Could you tell her that?

Regardless of that though- if Jennifer wanted to cover that song, I still think the actual mark of respect - due to the fact it's someone else's experience and someone else's thoughts and words (whether she relates or not) then she should ask the artist before she goes near it... we aren't talking about just liking a song here... we're talking about deep, extremely painful real life experiences of the original artist. So it's not about her not being able to sing it, it's about her not walking all over the original artist's emotions in order to do so.

Yes, but it's not like we are going into the artist's diary and pulling out private things.

The artist has already chosen to share with us. By simply making the song public, they are aware it is fair game for anyone else to cover.
