What does a newb need to make it?

Say what you think a newb needs to make it, should he/she be quiet and respectfully or loud and outgoing, or a mixture of the two? Share your ideas and advice for us n00bs on how to become the next famous Evboarder like: Jane, Sweet Tigger and Julieann, names known to all! Share how you started out, so we can learn from your mistakes.

I think you become famous by posting around a bit. let us get to know you by contributing your ideas and thoughts on various things.

it's also REALLY easy to get noticed by acting like a jackass or an idiot. But that usually results in people hating you or getting banned.

There is not a high population of really active members on the board right now. So, just keep posting regularly (and hopefully smartly), and everntually everyone will get to know you.

When I first joined this board, I ONLY posted when I had something of substance to say or if I could add to a conversation, but I also made efforts to post regularly and to keep up with those conversations. If you post once or twice and disappear... that won't do you any good.

When you're new, the easiest way to get people to pay attention to you is to sound intelligent. As TheLady said, you don't want to make yourself out to be an idiot: don't postwhore, don't be disrespectful, don't be rude and insulting. You have to earn respect and the best way to do that is to make quality posts. HTH.

When I first started, I was only talking to my guide at first.
I didn't know a single thing, or how to do anything.
I was always having trouble, knowing how to do so the simplest
things.
I just posted around alot, and got to know so many members that way.
You just have to be around, and post lots to make friends.
I would say, just be your self, and don't cause trouble whetever you do.
Just like Jo said (The Lady) as what her screen name is.
If you are having problems, and need a question asked, its important to
ask your asigned guide, and they will help you.
As many people know, alot of moderators are alot of times really busy,
because they have a duty here, but if you need help, always send them
a (PM) private message....and they will help you.
It may take a day or so, for them to respond back, but don't worry they will.
These are all the things I have learned, when I very first started, and as all
the mods know, I still ask for help at times.
Don't rush trying to know everything all at once, just give it a little time, and
as time go's by, you will learn alot.

I've been here for two years (ACTUALLY just a few months because of age) but I'm pretty noobish and I'm actually kind of proud of it. I think of it like this

n00b: A kid
A couple years on here: A teenager
Old School: An adult
Moderator: Senior (I'm not saying y'all are old I'm just being metaphorical)

I'm quite the n00b here, but I don't really feel like it any more, I don't feel like an old school member but I feel content. I don't post all that much, except in the debate and discussion sections but I get the feeling that people know me.

When I was just a little n00b I posted a debate topic called "Smoking or Non-Smoking" and I feel like I came off like a bitch in that section and I'm sorry if I did, but I apologized and I don't think people are mad at me any more.

I think my biggest mistake is telling people I don't believe in the lunar landings (Cause I don't) which caused someone to change my little title dealy to "Conspiracy Goddess" which I LOVE and know was all in good fun. I don't get the feeling people hate me but I don't get the feeling that they really LOVE me either, maybe they are just fond of me LoL.

LOL nether do I!!! well, at least I think the pictures are fake, I think for a noob, posting for the sake of posting is not a good idea. contribute with something of substance, and get used to interacting on a message board gradually. I was on here everyday for years, with only a couple of hundred posts. ( I still made a goose of myself at the start, and still do sometimes!!!)

You're not too popular for the sole purpose of not contributing to the board enough. You said yourself that you kind of stopped posting after a month, which was one of the things that TheLady and I warned against when we posted in this thread. If you want to be liked and become a part of the community, then you have to be involved. Invest in us and we'll invest in you, that's the way it works.

Allow me to put your mind at ease, if you believe that you aren't liked because you are a fan of Amy Lee, that's just flat out not true. Many of us are still fans here. You have to understand though that there are a lot of members here who had inside knowledge and are or know someone that is personal with Amy, and this has contributed toward their dislike of her. However, I like to think that everyone here is open minded enough to respect that whether someone likes or dislikes Amy Lee has no bearing on how much they are respected or liked on this board. I feel that EvBoard is especially good with respecting the right for people to have differing opinions.

However, this goes two ways. You have to give respect to earn it. If you came here and started disrespecting others, then it's no surprise if you're not well liked. I can't speak specifically to your case, because I can't recall anyone ever ganging up on you or you causing a problem. But the general rule of the thumb is to treat others the way you would like to be treated. Don't pass judgement on this board as a whole if you don't mind getting it thrown right back at you... especially if you're NEW to the board. It's much more important to feel the board out before jumping to conclusions. That's why we afford the ability for you to PM either your Welcoming Committee member, a Moderator, the Administrator, or any of the Old School members. If you're unsure, just ask.

Also, if you feel that you're being attacked, try PMing the person or a mod to see if you're misunderstanding the situation or if you're overreacting.

I quote Sister Spooky here, because she learned one of the most important rules here: Think BEFORE you post. Sometimes if you're passionate or heated about something, it's a good idea to calm down before posting about it or responding to someone else's post, because there's a good chance that you might come off sounding offensive, rude, angry, etc. All of these things will just make other members gloss over what you're saying and write you off as an idiot. (Don't worry Sister Spooky, you've since recovered from that and realized your mistake.)

Learn to be humble, to admit when you're wrong, and to take the time to make sure you understand something completely before you try and respond. Many times people will post things that they don't realize are offensive because 1. They haven't taken the time to double-check their post for insults or offensive wording and 2. They haven't taken the time to read and take-in what was actually said and have just responded to something out of anger. Sometimes many of these angry posts simply result from someone's inability to understand someone else. There's nothing wrong with asking someone to elaborate if you're not sure what they're saying either. We encourage that.

COMMUNICATION. COMMUNICATION. COMMUNICIATION.

If you feel you are being bullied or attacked, PELASE TELL SOMEONE AND TALK ABOUT IT. If you feel you're not fitting in and want some advice, PLEASE ASK SOMEONE AND TALK ABOUT IT. Stewing in your own feelings doesn't help a situation.

Above all, be friendly.

I for one, am GLAD for this site, I just wanted to take the time to thank people for actually paying attention to me. There's this one site I go to that I actually want to be a part of but no one listens to me there. Here I feel appreciated, thank God I recovered from my earlier mistakes LoL. Thanks, Jane, and everyone else!
