I know that when it looks like someone is getting harshed too much, or, in most cases they're getting too much praise, I like to PM them to make sure they're grounded before publicly airing my suggestions. At least it gives the author/musician a chance to reply to me directly before our conversation goes public.
As a musician I prefer to provide corrective guidance as opposed to criticism. It is because music is a theory there really is no wrong way just undesirable consequences. I approach it from the no sounds are bad sounds school; there is just bad assembly. However I totally understand the value of stern correction. If you‘re going to expose your self to the world via the Internet then you better have a thick skin. Not every one has a command of English. Heck most of the world has English as their third or fourth language. Generally they write it better then I the native English speaker. I think there can be a balance. If you carefully look at the posters numbers that should be a good guideline. Also weather or not this is their first post in this arena. Positive reinforcement for those with low numbers or new posters should be a must. Conversely those with quadruple digit post numbers should not be given the benefit of the doubt. IMHO this is a safe environment for those to sharpen their skills. It’s equivalent to “open mic night” or a drunken Karaoke tirade. (Because it’s not really a song if you butcher it that bad. kidding ) In any case saying the wrong thing only once can crush creativity permanently. All I ask is that we tread lightly with the fledgling artists. |

I think its hard to find a balance between giving a professional opinion and beiing blatantly straight forward, if the writer actually remembers that everyone is an individual and that one particular persons opinion doesnt actually mean that your work is just so then critisism wouldnt bother them as much. What we see in our work isnt necessarily what other people may see, they would have to climb inside our minds at the time of writing, I think if a piece of writing is from the heart then it is classed as 'good' work, simply because first of all it takes courage to put pen to paper, second it takes a bit more courage to display that work and third because we just gave a piece of ourselves to others, however I do agree with Dev, when a piece of writing is utter crap then it has to be said, and yes OUT LOUD, theres nothing worse than crap material that makes you puke, I am a writer, mostly poetry, I would love to write songs but im no good at it so ive never ventured, I would love to display a piece of my work and will do soon and will appreciate anyones opinion, Amysbiggestfam I think your work is very Evanescense influenced but its very much your own work, keep it up, you are a true writer
