Whisper

Whisper/Sound Asleep EP, track 2
Origin, track 2
Fallen, track 11
Anywhere But Home, track 13
written by: A. Lee and B. Moody

Originally recorded on the Whisper EP in 1998.

There are currently 5 versions of the song:
  • Whisper/Sound Asleep EP-Track #1
  • Origin-Track #2
  • Fallen-Track #11
  • 2 demo versions.
A demo version of the song contains sound clips from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. "O Verona" and "Juliet's Requiem" are the clips.

“Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum”-Rough translation means “Save us from danger, save us from evil.”

According to many sources the line is grammatically incorrect, but Amy Lee maintains that she’s a hell of a Thai chef.

Whisper

Catch me as I fall
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself
This truth drive me
Into madness
I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away

[CHORUS:]
Don't turn away
(Don't give in to the pain)
Don't try to hide
(Though they're screaming your name)
Don't close your eyes
(God knows what lies behind them)
Don't turn out the light
(Never sleep never die)

I'm frightened by what I see
But somehow I know
That there's much more to come
Immobilized by my fear
And soon to be
Blinded by tears
I can stop the pain
If I will it all away

[Chorus]

Fallen angels at my feet
Whispered voices at my ear
Death before my eyes
Lying next to me I fear
She beckons me
Shall I give in
Upon my end shall I begin
Forsaking all I've fallen for
I rise to meet my end

[Chorus]

***********************************
Whisper - Demo version 2002
This version begins with strings and one burst of noise before the vocals in the intro sample.

[Intro sample: O Verona / Juliet's Requiem]

Catch me as I fall
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself

This truth drives me into madness
I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away

Don't turn away
Don't give in to the pain
Don't try to hide
Though they're screaming your name
Don't close your eyes
God knows what lies behind them
Don't turn out the light
Never sleep never die

I'm frightened by what I see
But somehow I know
That there's much more to come
Immobilized by my fear
And soon to be
Blinded by tears

I can stop the pain
If I will it all away

Don't turn away
Don't give in to the pain
Don't try to hide
Though they're screaming your name
Don't close your eyes
God knows what lies behind them
Don't turn out the light
Never sleep never die

Fallen angels at my feet
Whispered voices at my ear
Death before my eyes
Lying next to me I fear
She beckons me shall I give in
Upon my end shall I begin
Forsaking all I've fallen for

Don't turn away
Don't give in to the pain
Don't try to hide
Though they're screaming your name
Don't close your eyes
God knows what lies behind them
Don't turn out the light
Never sleep never die

Lyrics by: A. Lee, B. Moody, D. Hodges

There's a Latin Choir in the end of the song.
I think they sing:

Servatis a periculum
Servatis a maleficum

which means:

Save us from evil
Save us from dark

Dark Royalty will become famous soon enough
servatis ad periculum
servatis ad maleficum

that´s the grammaticaly correct version

and the translation:
save us from danger
save us from evil

periculum = danger
maleficum = evil

You can hear a live version of Whisper on Everybody's Fool single, too. It was recorded live in E-Werk Cologne, Germany, October 17, 2003. The interesting moment is that ABH's live version is different from EF single's track. Ben played a very beautiful guitar solo in Cologne.

That's not the correct version:

SERVATE NOS A PERICULO (Save us from danger)
SERVATE NOS A MALEFICO (Save us from evil)

The right translation of servatis a maleficum, servatis a maleficum is something like "you save yourself from danger, u save yourself from evil".

I have the We The Living Volume 3 compilation cd, and the version on there sounds different to the others, so I'm guessing it's the 2nd demo. Whisper is track 6 and the song's length is 4:05.

Actually, that compilation was released in 2000 I believe, and any of the Fallen-demos of Whisper must have came out in 2001-2002. So, it must've been a previous version, must probably Origin.

From what I have, there are four versions in all.

The Whsiper EP - Begins with a reversed clip of the guitar intro before a woman comes in and says "Death in it's, death in it's most hideous form" and the normal guitars kick in.

Origin - This begins in the same way as the Fallen version does and sounds pretty similar, however it does not have the choir chanting in Latin at the end.

2002 Demo - This is the one with the choir at the begining taken from the Romeo + Juliette movie with Leo Dicaprio and Claire Danes.

Fallen - As anyone will know, this one has the Latin chanting at the end.

As for the correct transelation, I haven't a clue. All I know is the 'danger' is 'periculum' and 'evil' is 'maleficum'. There are many translations for 'save' and 'ratis' means 'saved' and I couldn't find anything for 'us' so I give up.
