Ali introduced me to this band, and I thank her deeply for it. Within Temptation is amazing. It really sucks that their albums aren't released in the US. <_< When I found out I almost died.

Heeey! I have the mp3 version of Angels. It was one of the first live WT performances I'd ever heard. It's what got me addicted to finding more live stuff. XD It's cool to see it live. *nods*

For those who have been trumpeting their merits for ages, there's a certain level of smugness to be gleaned from the recent surge in popularity of bands like Nightwish and In Flames who have constantly delivered the goods but been roundly ignored on these shores. More than a slight feeling of superiority, though, is a huge sense of relief that finally these bands are getting the recognition theu deserve over here. 'The Silent Force' has already sold like hot cakes across the Channel, and it's high time we caught up.
In keeping with the strengh of their back-catalogue, 'The Silent Force' is an epic burst of pomp and OTT arangements that ooze drama and romance from every elegantly orchestrated note and operatic vocal. If you;re put off by such fare, however, don't panic, because this is only half or the Within Temptation appeal. While grandoise opener 'See Who I Am' with its heavy strings and choir has enough dramtic splendour to power a 'Sharpe' DVD box set, Within Temptation also have a radio rock streak a mile wide, and for all their classical leanings, they just can't help writing memorable tunes, such as the irresistibly anthemic 'Stand My Ground'. And at times - and the po-faced music poilce can scoff all their like - Sharon den Adel doesn't sound to far from Amy Lee when she reins in the histroinics, such as on closer 'Somewhere'.
It's not all full-on symphonic power, though. 'Pale' sees Adel softly singing over gently flowing strings, which despite sounding like Enya is one of the album's finest moments, showcasing not only her breathtaking vocals but also how adept the band are at making emotional, moving music that creates feeling and atmosphere. Not just with one track, but the whole album of continually changing, gloriously colourful musical landscape shaped by a clutch of wonderfully panormic tunes that truly belong together.
If this turns a whole new lot of people onto Within Temptation, it won't be before time. And as far as first impressions go, it's a very, very good one.

'The Silent Force' Bonus DVD
As though the album wasn;t enough, the repackaged version of the album comes with a bonus DVD of live tracks to spoil you even futher, as well as the promo clip of one of 'The Silent Force''s highlights, 'Stand My Ground', which, with its digitally animated cityscapes is almost exactly like the Video for Evanescence's 'Bring Me To Life'.
Far more interesting anf worth coughing up for the reissue if you already own 'The Silent Force', however, is the live footage. Filmed as Germany's Rock Am Ring festival, the five tracks featured showcase WT's power brilliantly, and how absolutly gigantic they cound in the live settig. Something of a rarity on live DVDs is an actual sensee of atmosphere, and while this doesn't exactly pull you into your tv, thanks to the ever-darkening skies above the stage, there's a palpable sense of drama during the spectacularly grandoise 'Mother Earth' inparticular that makes it more appealing than most live efforts.
As a bonus disk, this is great stuff. However, as with all live documents, it's obviously no subsitute for actually being there, and in Within Temptation's case, you're left with a feeling that you really are missing out on something special. Which is another reason to go and see them in the flesh when they return to the UK next month.

overall.. I think it was a mighty fine review.. maybe a few too many comparisions to Evanescence, but atleast they were slaging them off against each other which is their usual thing!
