LOADS!! Hours upon hours of stuff!! If any one wants to rip their DVD and send me some of the extras, or put them on Megaupload or something, I'll put them on Youtube. Otherwise you'll be waiting for ages for me to get round to fixing my converter. Have NO time ATM

Anywhos.. Ruud's blog has been busy:

For All We Know

Apparently it hasn't gone unnoticed that I'm working on a solo-project. People have been asking me about it quite a lot lately. It's really great that some people are interested to know more about it. Thanks a lot for that. I decided to post a little blog about this project to inform you a bit.
At this moment I'm calling the project "For All We Know". Maybe I'll change it eventually but this is it for now. I decided to call it that because I think that name raises all the questions that don't have immediate answers in an instant. And what is more interesting than searching for answers? Everybody is looking for certain answers I guess. Even subconsciously. Therefore it's multi-interpretable. The only questionable thing about the name that might raise some eyebrows instead of questions is when you pronounce the abbreviation of it; FAWK. Ah well, that's just a minor detail...
Musically it's going to be heavy in the basics. Very guitar oriented of course. It won't be a shred-fest but guitaristically (if that's even a word) interesting. Some keywords that come to mind right now are; Heavy, Hysterical, Melodic, Atmospherically, Ambient, Groovy, Mellow... Check out my influences in the general info section. Then you see what kind of music I listen to. I guess it's inevitable that some of the 'ingredients' of those bands and artist end up in my own musical stew.
And no, it's not going to be something like Within Temptation. What would the use be of doing a side project when it's something like my main band?
I'm still working on it by myself but eventually I want to work with other people. I already have some ideas of who to approach but I can't elaborate on that yet.
I just got back from the United States and we're about to do some more European gigs but after that I will have about a month off from WT. That's when I'm going to work on it again. I try to do some stuff on the road but I'm more productive when I'm at home.
I hope I can upload a demo song soon. But I'm a perfectionist so I want it to be really really good. Therefore it can take a bit longer.
That's also a reason why I don't have anything planned about the release. I'm still in the middle of writing stuff. I only have 2 songs 'finished' but a million ideas. So don't expect for it to be released soon. It can take a while. But when it is released you can count on it that I'm really happy with it... Hopefully you will like it too then...

I'll keep you posted...

Thanks a lot for reading...

See ya soon...

A perfect morning…

This morning was pure perfection. And yet, it was such a normal morning. Well, to quite a lot of people maybe but not for me. Maybe that is exactly the reason why I enjoyed it so much. By now you must be wondering what the heck I had been doing that made me decide to write this little blog. It's not that spectacular maybe but still…
It was the first time on this second European leg of this tour that I got up at 9am. I always want to get up as early as possible but somehow it never works. Maybe it worked this time because I was already in bed at 9.30pm last night. I've been going to bed earlier and earlier the last couple of days. I guess it's because the only place where you can have total privacy when you're on tour is your bunkbed. We've been on the road for such a long time now that I'm really starting to miss quality time with my iPod, my books, my MacBook and my mind. So last night I watched a concert by my favorite mandolin player Chris Thile with Bryan Sutton on guitar and by reading my book 'Assassin's Apprentice' by Robin Hobb.
So this morning I got up at 9am. Breakfast was already served in the venue "Haus Auensee" in Leipzig, Germany. I had some yoghurt, fresh squeezed orange juice, eggs with bacon, some bread and fresh pineapple. I love fresh pineapple so much but it comes with a price. My mouth is pretty red and sore now due to the sour juice. Well, it was definitely worth it…
After breakfast I took a hot shower. It's always nice to feel 'human' again…
I noticed the venue was situated in a nice setting. There were lots of trees and grass around it. Across the street was a camping place so I decided to take my mandolin and iPod and go for a walk. On this tour I've been listening a lot to one of my favorite bands ever 'Nickel Creek'. This morning I listened to a live recording of one of their concerts. It was so relaxing to listen to their beautiful acoustic music while I was strolling around through this forest-like environment. I also noticed that autumn is finally kicking in. I think this is the most beautiful season of the year. The temperature is great. It's always great to wear your favorite sweater again for the first time in a year and to see your own breath in the air with every time you exhale. And of course the colors are amazing…
I looked for a place to sit where I could play my mandolin. I'm really happy I took it with me on this tour. I don't always have that much time for it but I try to play a bit every day. After 45 minutes I decided it was time to get back to the venue and start doing some 'serious' work like answering emails and keeping in touch with some people at home. But I must say, it was a perfect way to start the day. Wish I could do this more often…
Quote:
Drawing a crowd with my mandolin

Yesterday evening I gave my first unofficial solo concert as a mandolin player. The first time I ever played the mandolin on stage was last January when I joined my best friends project 'Maiden United'. That band consists of a collection of musicians from other bands that plays acoustic versions of Iron Maiden songs. I played on the official Dutch Iron Maiden fanclub day with them. I played the dobro and the mandolin so that was really fun to do. That was actually the day when I met Steve Harris again and his daughter Lauren with her band (they supported us on the first leg of our European tour).
Anyways, back to my story.
Yesterday we had a day off in Vienna where we played the night before. We stayed at a hotel while the bus was still parked at the venue. We planned to leave around 10pm but I was already at the bus around 8. The weather was very nice and I wanted some 'alone time' so I took my mandolin and sat down on a staircase of a building. After half an hour a family passed by. A mother, father and two little girls, who were about 3 and 4 years old. First they walked by but then I saw them return from the corner of my eyes. The two little girls were gawking at me with their mouths open. Not that I was playing that great but I think the girls never saw a mandolin before. One of the girls asked me if I could play them a song. Of course I couldn't refuse. So I played the beginning part of "Sweet Afton", a song by Nickel Creek. After that they clapped their hands and asked me where they could put 'the coins' in. That was so sweet. I had my mandolin case opened before me but I made a deal. I told them that I didn't needed 'the coins' but that I would like them to sing me a song. The biggest girl grabbed her daddy's hand and they both started to sing a German song. They were very shy and were shifting constantly on their feet. The smallest girl was so restless that all of a sudden she stepped on my case, lost her balance and fell in the case. The case reacted by closing the lid so that the little girl sat in my case with the lid half closed. She almost started to cry but when we were laughing really hard she realized it wasn't anything serious. She started laughing as well. After that I let them hold the mandolin for a second. It's always so nice to see a smile emerge on the face of a kid when he or she is making any kind of sound (or noise if you will) on an instrument, Maybe I've inspired two little kids to pick up the mandolin or any other instrument for that matter and start playing music. That would be so great…

A Day off in Paris

Last Sunday we had a day off. Martijn and me had booked a flight to Paris so we wouldn't have to spend one a half day in the bus from Berlin to Paris. We arrived around 11.30am at Orly airport and a friend of ours picked us up. She took us to her parents place. Actually I had a different idea of spending my Sunday. I wanted to book a hotel for myself and spend the day watching movies, listening to music, walk around and sleep. But before I knew it I was on my way to a suburb of Paris.
In the end it turned out for the better because we spent a terrific day with a very warm family. Her folks were really nice and also their friends, who were visiting them, were very kind people. They had prepared a five-course diner for seven people with the best French wines you can get your hands on.
We had salad, fondue with very good pieces of beef, a collection of different French cheeses and a great pie as a desert. The greatest thing was that every course came with a different bottle of wine or champagne. During the fondue her father opened a 17-year-old bottle of red wine, which he had been saving for a special occasion for the last 10 years. According to him it would cost a fortune to buy that bottle today. Of course Martijn and me were really honored that he opened that bottle on the day we were there. I really like a good glass of wine but to be honest I'm a wine drinking amateur. But Mr. LaFleur is a real Frenchman so he could tell us how you determine if the wine is a good. Not so much the taste but the quality. That was really interesting.
After dinner he took out his guitar (a 1963 Fender Stratocaster. AMAZING!!!) and he asked if Martijn and me could play some songs. Of course we were happy to 'pay' them by giving the family and their friends a little private concert. We played some versions of our songs with our friend Helene (LN on myspace) on vocals. She sounded great!
Even though I had planned my Sunday off very differently, I had an amazing time. It felt great to be welcomed into this family with open arms…

OK.. It may be about eight years old, but its an interview with Jeroen on his own. I never saw this before, sorry if anyone else has. It's fun in a hindsiht kind of way.

Jeroen van Veen of Within Temptation
Within Temptation are an excellent doom/gothic metal band from Holland, home of The Gathering and other like-minded musicians. With splendid female vocals, male grunts, and rich, melodic songwriting, they are one of the rising stars in the metal scene, and if all goes well, they should become as popular as the best of them. Because of school and other time-consuming activities, they are currently inactive, but expect to see a new album by the end of 2000! The following is my interview with Jeroen van Veen, bass guitarist for Within Temptation.

Jeffrey Shyu: I'd like to begin by thanking you and the band for bringing such wonderful music into the world. I've heard some people compare Within Temptation's sound to that of your fellow countrymen, the Gathering. Personally, I think it's closer to the Theatre of Tragedy blueprint, but it's not a carbon copy of either band by any stretch. Who do you cite as influences?
Jeroen van Veen: We grew up with Paradise Lost, Anathema, and My Dying Bride. Robert and I were listening to bands like Marillion and Rush too, so I think they were influences too. Anyway, they made us pick up instruments.
Jeffrey: I've noticed that Within Temptation are more upfront to their fans about news pertaining to the band. Most other bands won't say anything on their WebPages about full-time jobs or college studies, for instance. Was the band always intended to be a side-activity for its members, and not a full time occupation?
Jeroen: Well, we are smart enough to see that you can't make a real living by making metal music in Holland, no matter how big you are. So you need a certificate (diploma? - Ed.) and a job...
Jeffrey: No albums and no tours for a while, eh? That's a shame. (Not true anymore, because of my negligence... - Jeroen)
Jeroen: We will do the Metalfest 2000 tour with My Dying Bride and Orphanage! (Different from the Milwaukee Metalfest - Ed.) This mini-tour will be on 3, 4, 5, and 6 February. For the exact information, please check the homepage.
Jeffrey: Do you have any idea when Within Temptation will start recording new material?
Jeroen: If all goes according to plan we will record the new album around July 2000.
Jeffrey: So is the band on hiatus, temporarily broken up, or what?
Jeroen: It's just that all the members have other important things to do, so we just don't have the time that this band really deserves, but we will persevere. We will NOT break up! It will just take some time...
Jeffrey: I hear that Ivar de Graaf is back with the band. Why did he leave, and what made him come back?
Jeroen: He wanted to start a new band, playing more progressive music. He did that and now he is trying to do both bands. He thought he wouldn't have enough time to do so, but because of us having not that much time (i.e. inactive - Ed.), it is possible for him to do both.
Jeffrey: It's difficult to find your albums here in the United States; for Americans like me, the only option is to order them by mail. Any suggestions as to where we can buy the CDs and not get raped by the price? Is the single, "Restless," still available?
Jeroen: I really don't know... I'm ashamed... But you can put questions like these on the message board on our site. You will probably get an answer from there...
Jeffrey: It seems like Within Temptation and Orphanage are very close. How long have you known the members of Orphanage?
Jeroen: It started with the recording of our first CD. Lex Vogelaar was the producer, Guus Eikens helped with some synths, and George Oosthoek did some grunting. Then we did some gigs with each other and then the Germany-tour came. Two weeks in one touring car really connects people ;-). They are all smart, likeable guys (and girl) so we are looking forward to doing the upcoming gigs and CD, for which they will lend their help again.
Jeffrey: Was Dynamo your biggest gig?
Jeroen: Yes, it was! But I must say, a small gig is just as nice, because you have better contact with the audience, and atmosphere is something of great importance with our music.
Jeffrey: Maybe Within Temptation can come over to the States to play at the Milwaukee Metalfest or at a similar event. You'd get to visit my wonderful country and see it in all its glory!
Jeroen: Chances are small... It will cost too much money. Only a big record company can afford that.
Jeffrey: My previous comment was not without a bit of sarcasm, in case you didn't notice. American music sucks. Even American metal sucks big time, for the most part. Are there any American bands that you can even remotely tolerate?
Jeroen: I think American music not only sucks... America sucks! I will not dwell in this... :-) But if I had to name a band, it'd be Spock's Beard, one of my favorites.
Jeffrey: Does your other band, Barton Dean, have any albums available?
Jeroen: Not yet, but we are finishing the last songs. We will record our first album in February (again, if all goes according to plan...)
Jeffrey: And what do you do for a living, outside of the band(s)?
Jeroen: I recently stopped working as administrator. I did this for three years, but I wanted to do something else. I'm looking for the right study to design homepages and that's not easy...
Jeffrey: Thanks a lot for the interview, and good luck to you! Jeroen: Good luck to you too! Interviewer: Jeffrey Shyu, December/1999

Thanks for posting that interview MotherOfLight. I haven't come across many interviews with Jeroen. It's interesting reading his opinions about certain topics.

Great news! Tonight we picked up a TMF Award in Belgium, where we were nominated as "Best International Live Act". Thanks for all your votes. It was an extra special night for us, as we also received a Platinum Award for our previous album, "The Silent Force". So all in all, it was a pretty good night for us!!

In two weeks, the Dutch TMF Awards will take place and a few days later the MTV Europe Music Awards. Of course you can still vote for us, thanks!

Wheee! Although I would have preferred the news item to be "All I Need Video Released!"

Those pics are so cute! That's awesome. I really hope they start winning awards here...they deserve to. And it would gain them some national attention.
