Question women in the music industry

this is a question for amy...

Im 15 and i really want to be a music producer. People keep telling me its an industry dominated by men, but i never really cared. But the other day i was in a studio procedures class and we were miking a drum set and my teacher told me to wait til the guys were done (it was just me and 3 other college age guys) cuz i needed room for my specific mics. So i waited for them to finish and as soon as i started to do mine they sorta took over like i couldnt possibly do it on my own. I actually made me feel like shit and i know i just hafta prove that i can do the same things they can but i never have the chance. Does it ever get better and do u have any suggestions?

You've got your head in the right direction, but I'm not sure your intentions will get you where you want to be. Sure, wanting to prove someone wrong is a driving force, but perhaps you should worry more about how much you'd love the career, and not how much men dominate it or how terrible they make you feel. You can do absolutely anything you set your will to, not just careers that aren't dominated by men.

Perhaps you should excel because you can, not because someone else already has. Use that drive as a vehicle, but use your will to set it into motion.

Just my two cents.

Next time they step in and start to take over, you should stop them and politely ask them to let you do it yourself. It's your work, and you need to do it. If they don't indule your request, try it again without the "polite" part. I'm sure you can come up with something colorful to get your point across. And yeh, everything Michelle said.

Look at Sharon Osbourne, she went though the exact same thing, suffering through the male dominated indusrty, but she stuck to her guns and kept trying, and evetualy, got her chance... so don't give up.

what? a girl miking a drum set? get outta here!

You'd probably be really suprised if you knew how far I've pushed myself because somebody tried to tell me I couldnt do something. Thats one of the main things that drives me on - proving people wrong! I have had many experiences just like yours and I have to say that for me, it has gotten better, because Ive worked my ass off and proven that I can do certain things. Men being better at electronics, recording, "gear", etc. - thats a stereotype because the vast majority of people out there doing that for a living are guys (remember - girls are busy drawing horsies and picking flowers!). Alot of times, they just need to see that you can do it to believe it. On one hand, it sucks that you have to prove yourself, but on the other hand, its really fun to blow their minds!!
Hang in there an learn all you can in that class, and then smoke 'em at finals. You'll have plenty of time to laugh about it when your on tour working for your favorite band.

MANDI if you set goals for yourself and have a gameplan for life, you can do anything that you set your mind to. if you want to be a music producer and you are willign to work your ass off to get there, i belive you can doit (just like i belive anyone else can do it.)set your standards and goals high and strive to meet them. good luck and i hope everything works out the way you want it. remember if you stumble along the way, pick yourslef up and keep pushing. i am in a situation right now and i am not giving up. i am pushing myself to better be prepared for when this oppurtunity comes back around in 3-4 years.

damn i feel like a motivational speaker..................................
