Th13teen Ghosts - Decent movie, but when it was over I was thinking 'What? That was actually supposed to be scary?'

Cursed - Once again, a decent movie, but not scary or original.

Open Water - Pretty boring, not scary at all.

The Village - Awesome movie, but as far as horror goes, it was dreadfully mislabled.

Is that the movie with the glass house that that one guy inherated cause some uncle or something died, and it was full of ghost/dead people in the basement?

right here!!! the only part that i thought was umm...just cringing saying "OWW!" was when the one zombie ripped out the girls naval ring..i was like ahhhh....cuz i have mine pierced and i was holding my stomach going "OW!" but thats it....it was ok..not the best horror movie..but i really like a nightmare on elm street...thats like the best horror movie made!!!

Hmm...it's a good question. Considering that it seems many out there arent willing to issue a suspension of disbelief, I'd say it would be a rather difficult thing to do. Especially since I've seen far too many jackasses who would rather sit and act sarcastic during a movie.

I love the horror genre, but many films today just arent scary. To Hollywood it seems as if the genre is a market for some quick cash and they constantly hand projects over to directors who have little love for the genre. There arent many directors who would dare make a comedy because they dont know how to handle the genre. Yet, for some reason, everyone seems to think they can make a horror movie. The entire catalog of movies made by Dark Castle comes to mind.

Audiences today are also just becoming to endeared to the MTV style of things. Substance and depth are not big money makers because they are not as flashy or loud. One of the problems I had with the movie SAW (one of many), was the blaring use of loud industrial music in places where it completely cut any kind of tension and mad me groan. Well, that plus the acting, and overall execution of the movie, but I've made that painfully known elsewhere. Also, many low budget projects dont get the recognition they deserved because studios dont want to spend the money and many people are stuck in the frame of mind that if it's not big budget and in your face, then it's got "Bad" written all over it. Dog forbid that any imagination should be used on the part of the viewer.

Theres also belief to the idea that if it's not scary, then it too equals crap. It IS possible to be a good movie, even if you arent willing to, as said before, issue a suspension of disbelief. I know the genre isnt for everyone and i'd never pretend that it was. Also, the internet is never a good way to gauge any opinion about these types of things, music included, especially when everyone can easily put on their "to cool for school" googles and say whatever they want. Plus, I've seen more than a few movies listed here that arent actually horror movies. Suspense/ thriller and horror are not the same thing. Using some elements does not make something a horror movie either.

Amen to that! I think you nailed it there. See when you do that these days the kids are just chompin' at the bit to poop all over it. ANY kind of suspension of disbelief is just not plausible.

Ok so what ARE you left with? Nothing but the surface. So if the surface is all there is not much else goes with that except pretty people getting their faces removed with kitchen utensils, auditory nonsense (a la industrial noise) and some other useless pop culture meme like some activity like drug use or high school jargon. All those superficial elements become the only thing you able to actually attend to in the film. Thus the film is a pile of shit.

So I agree with you. Basically it's a lack of original storytelling and possibly the lack of the audience giving a damn about a story in the first place.

Still I wonder...what IS scary anymore?

Really scary is what you can't see. It's scary because it's interesting and intriguing. Because it forces you to push what you believe. Movies like The Changeling and The Shining. I love stuff like that.
