I didnt like this song at first because I didn't bother to listen past 1 minute of it.

When I listen to it now, I usually skip it until 1:00. I love the organ at "I'm alone now" reminds me of a hip hop song, maybe Outkast.

And I love how the piano plays the little tune, then the guitar plays it, then they both play it.

But don't you think you guys are over analyzing the lyrics a wee bit too much? lol

This song really captured Amy's Portishead influences. Anyone else think so?

At first I skipped this song because the intro was boring. But now I'm in love with this song! The chorus is awesome! The lyrics are great too!... They could have worked a bit more with the intro... but the song is great

hi! im new here... hope i can give my opinion. eheh

the part where she sings:

" the mechanical lights of Lisbon frightened it away"

i think it`s kinda funny... she should answer the question: was she in Lisbon when she wrote this? i just thought it was really funny... or maybe is just a way of telling that Lisbon have a nice, dark, atmosphere? and that she liked enough to say it in the song?

and it does remind me of the departure of Ben... but the theory that it`s about Terry is nice too... maybe she put the two perspectives in one place... losing a friend in life and another almost in death (or somethin like that)... theirs stars where fading or almost fading... anything like this? or am i putting too much philosophy in my opinion?

it`s a beautifull song... no one can deny that.

cheers everyone

I love this song, it reminds me when my father was in the hospital for 3 months on intensive care, they were really difficult times and when amy sings "though I patiently waited bedside for the death of today I can't see your star" I almost cried cause my dad could have died and I just think that I'm very lucky to have him here anyway this song it's so beautiful and cool and I love amy's voice in this song, charming!

I can definetely sense emotions of loneliness in heaps of songs on this album. You'd think that it'd be boring after a while, but the way the songs describe this shattering emotion is different each time, I love it. I haven't heard it, I don't know why all you naughty ppl are downloading the album and/or songs. Isn't it so much nicer when you listen to it, in its little case and package, and are shocked in a beautiful way, just held onto every word sang? I am soooo waiting. Curiousity is control!

that's the first thing I thought about when I heard it...

"I can't see your star, the mechanical lights of Lisbon frightened it away" - where was the band when Ben left? I knew it was somewhere in Europe...not sure if it was Portugal

"I CAN'T see your star" - Ben's "star" perhaps... Amy's guiding star...He's gone...she can't see it anymore...

"and I'm alone now...all in parts in pieces, swim lonely" - the band afterwards

"all my fears turn to rage" - c'mon!!
I totally agree with you! Actually, this song isn't one of my favs of TOD. Last night, I was listen it and reading the lyrics. I just imagine Amy in an hotel room (pretty much like "Everybody's Fool" video). The whole song has a very clear path of feeling: emptyness, then loneliness, then frustration and finally rage.

The "star" is maybe an inspiration (to go ahead, to writing a new song ...). Maybe Amy feel the need of Ben's support to going ahead with the band, but he wasn't there. Then she becomes afraid about the future of the band, just like a shipwreck ("and I'm alone now...all in parts in pieces, swim lonely"). Finally, she feel the frustration of the loneliness, and the loss of so many years of work and friendship ("all my fears turn to rage").

Ben left the band on 10/22/03 while the band was in Germany. They were in Lisbon slightly before this, on 10/3/03 I think. They were also in Lisbon 5/30/04, which is way before Amy and Shaun split up, isn't it?

Just stating facts, not my opinion. At all.

And Lisbon could be totally metaphorical too - who knows?
